Are new iMacs adequate or is Mac Pro needed

I'm about to upgrade. are new iMacs adequate for 1st home studio and running apps like Logic or do i need to invest in a Mac Pro?

i think you'll find the new iMacs more than capable of running a home studio. buy the mac pro if you need room for expansion, or if you just don't like the idea of an all-in-one. otherwise, save some serious dough and go for the iMac. i think you'll be quite thrilled honestly.
my CoreDuo 2ghz almost matches my old Power Mac Dual G5 using Logic - i say almost because i recently got a Core Audio Overload message on the iMac trying to play a big session i created on the G5 (where i never got such a message). but as i said before, i think the new Core2Duo chips will erase any doubt re: intel imac vs. power mac g5 (dual)

  • New iMacs better than my Mac Pro?

So would the new 27-inch iMac top of the line out in Dec 2012, be a better/faster station than my MAC PRO 3.0 early 2008 with 3TB storage, 12GB RAM and a ATI 5870 card?
I'd be editing both CS6 and Final Cut Studio 3 on it.

In case Allan was unclear:  Absolutely not.
I have a early 2008 MacPro 8x 3.2GHz (16GB RAM / 8TB Storage I've upgraded to SATA3 and have dual 27" Samsung monitors and a 37" color grading monitor on an Matrox MSO2 mini. I wouldn't trade it for a pile of new iMacs.

It's that last sentence I'm curious about.  "However a MacPro already has much more capability already built in than Thunderbolt can add."
I'm thinking of getting a Mac Pro, but see that it doesn't seem to have Thunderbolt. I'm not sure if I care. The reason for the Mac Pro is that I'm topping out my 8gb RAM 27" iMac capacity with the volume of work going through it, and my tech tells me I'm pushing it too hard.  I use it to run a small law office, but usually have about 15 apps open, with lots going on in the network in the background.
Is there any reason to wait until Apple puts Thunderbolt into the Mac Pro?
Thunderbolt will not increase the performance capability of the MacPro. It will add a bus that can be convenient, especially later on when Thunderbolt devices become more common, more mature and better supported - oh, and with more common will come less costly. From a pure performance standpoint the existing PCIe slots are much more capable and cheaper to implement. You would be giving up nothing with a current MacPro.
My opinion. Thunderbolt is really a great move forward in the long run - needed something to replace Firewire and this is it. But there is no reason to wait on Thunderbolt on MacPro - it is redundant.

  • Wich mac is better for running Motion ?  iMac 27" retina or Mac Pro 8 core ?

wich mac is better for running Motion ?  iMac 27" retina or Mac Pro 8 core ?

I'm not sure if you've returned the monitor but I had the same problem with my new Mac Pro.
Basically the Dell monitor doesn't identify itself properly via Mini Display Port/Thunderbolt and newer Macs think it's a TV so the wrong kind of signal is sent to the monitor.
It's easily fixed - don't be put off by the instructions below, I've just done it and it takes less than a minute.
    Here's what you do:
Download the Ruby script (click 'patch-edid.rb' in yellow):
    http://embdev.net/topic/284710#3027030
Move the downloaded 'patch-edid.rb' file to your desktop
Open the Terminal app from: /Applications/Utilities/Terminal
In Terminal, type the following and hitting enter  (or copy and paste it into Terminal and hit enter):
    ruby ~/Desktop/patch-edid.rb
    Go to your desktop
Check that a new folder was created - something like: "DisplayVendorID-10ac"
Open the Display Overrides folder at:
    /Macintosh HD/System/Library/Displays/Overrides/
Copy the new folder into the /Overrides directory
Authenticate with your user password (if asked)
    Restart your mac
For the first few seconds after restart it might look like nothing has changed but by the time you see the login screen (or your Desktop) everything will look as it should.
That's it - you won't have to do this again unless you erase and reinstall your mac.
    Hope that helps someone.
    Cheers

  • HT1338 new Apple I bought a Mac Pro, since I got it keeps crashing....all the time!!! It is my first Mac computer and it is horrible!!!!

I bought a new Apple I bought a Mac Pro Retina screen, since I got it keeps crashing ALL the time!!!  This is my first Mac computer and I am hating it!!!  I assume I can take down to the any store and they will replace it??

I have a similar problem, my MBP Retina 15" 6 weeks old crashes and locks-up all the time with just about every application.  I now have gone back to using my old MS XP system, it is much more stable than Mountain Lion OS and Apple hardware.  I use Window-7 at work for last 6 months, not a single crash and/or lock-up.  I'm looking at returning/selling my MBP and getting a Window-8 system, Apple is now building crap hardware and software.  I recommend you consider the same solution.  Good Luck !

What do I need to do differently?

The late, great Pondini was investigating that issue before he passed away.

I think there might be information there on how to reset Time Machine to do a full backup. I think you basically have to reset it and start over.

I am looking at buying a new iMac but not sure if I need the Nvidia Geforce GTX 680 MX 2GB or put the money into Memory I will not be gaming
New to the iMac and apple

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If you aren't going to use your Mac for anything special (Final Cut, Aperture, Photoshop, games...), you don't need that graphic card and you will save money.
Also, as it looks like you are going to buy the 27-inch iMac, I recommend you to buy the Mac with 8 GB of memory, and then, buy the memory that your iMac needs in OWC or Crucial (the iMac supports 32 GB of RAM) > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2012_27/DDR3L
Doing this, you will save a lot of money. Also, it won't void the warranty of the Mac. If you need help installing the RAM, see > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5540

  • Do Mac Pros need network cards?

I bought a Mac pro in 2007.  It's running 10.4. Do I need to buy a network card to access an existing wireless network?

In 2007, so that should have been an original Mac Pro.  The wireless network card was an optional add-on with a Mac Pro, so if you did not order one with it, then you do not have a wifi card and will need to purchase one.
I think wifi was only as a build to order option (that is, no wifi as standard equipment) up to about the 2010 Mac Pro's.
P.S. if you are really running 10.4 on that machine, then you must actually have a PowerMac G5, not a Mac Pro (all Mac Pro's are Intel machines) and the first Mac Pro would have shipped with OS X 10.5 on it.  No PowerMac every shipped with wifi as a standard item, only as build to order optional equipment.

  • New Computer purchase 27" ACD & Mac pro or 27" imac

Hi I plan on buying a new Apple Computer very soon, I'm going to go with either a Mac Pro and a 27" ACD or a 27" iMac. Do the new 27" iMac's have better specs then the Mac Pro's? I do like to have plenty of storage in my computer but I would sacrifice space for better specs if the iMac is better. If I got an iMac then I would customize it with a solid state drive and a 2 TB Drive, 16 gb of memory. I plan on installing WIndows 7 ultimate 64 bit on the mac. Which computer would be better for Windows 7. I also plan on hooking up my Mac to my 50" Panasonic VT25 Plasma TV as either an extended or duplicated display.

The newest IMacs do not allow you to use any but Apple drives. They customized the iMac drives to add a temperature sensor, and if you install a non-Apple drive, the case fans roar at full speed.
Mac Pro (tower) is a lot more flexible anyway.

  • Using 27in iMac as display for Mac Pro (both latest models)

I'm in need of using my new 27in iMac (current 2012 model) as the display for my current 2012 Mac Pro. As you probably know, the mac pro has 1 DVI port, 2 mini display port, and some firewire ports. The iMac has 1 firewire port and 2 thunderbolt ports. Both units have USB 2.0 obviously. I found that the new iMac doesn't support target disk mode with non-thunderbolt machines so that won't work. I wonder if there is a way to use these other connections to enable my mac pro to display on the imac. Any suggestions?
(My latest wonder is if I can upgrade the video card in the mac pro with a card that has thunderbolt outputs?)

That is a subtle distinction, but I think you are right.
Use an iMac with Thunderbolt as a display
If you have an iMac with Thunderbolt, any other Mac with Thunderbolt can use it as a display. The iMac will play both the video and audio from the other Mac.
Connect the Thunderbolt cable to the Thunderbolt ports on each computer.
Make sure both Mac computers are turned on and awake.
Press Command (⌘)-F2 on the keyboard of the external display Mac.
If you want the external display Mac to play audio as well as video from the primary Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Sound, and then click Output. Select the external display Mac from the list of devices.

  • My new iMac cannot detect old MacBook Pro HDD (as external with bootcamp)

I just setup the brand new iMac 27. I hooked up the old HDD from my MacBook Pro (with bootcamp). I can only see the windows files but not the MAC files like iTunes, iPhoto, and etc. I initially thought maybe the OS so I plug in my wife's older version iMac and also seeing only the windows files. When I do the eject, it said there are 2 partitions and if I only want to eject one of them or both but then it shows only one drive.
Anyone knows how I can detect the MAC files so I can retrieve all my files back?

The HDD was still good. I used the Windows to read the Mac files and it read OK (need to install some 3rd party software). It didn't convert anything but only allow it to read the MAC files from Windows OS. But when I connect to the MAC OS, it won't see it!
