Are new MyBooks still compatible with old G5s?

Hi,
I've just filled up my MyBook and I want to add another one so I can continue to regualary back up my data, but I'm worried MyBooks have moved on while I'm still using my 1.8 Ghz PowerPC G5 (OS 10.5.8).
If I buy a shiny new MyBook and daisychain (?) it to my existing MyBook, will it work?
Sorry to be a ditz. I used to have a boyfriend who did this stuff for me. Should have listened and learned while I had the chance. My bad.

Hello Jesus S., and a warm welcome to the forums!
It can be hard to sometimes find where to start a New Topic, so here's the link for 10.5 installing...
http://discussions.apple.com/post!default.jspa?forumID=1219
The problem is, if there's Categories showing, you must drill down to a single one before you get the :Post New Topic Link"!
Yeah, it can be confusing as to where to find the Post New Topic button on this forum.
The reason it's hard to find that Post New Topic link, is because if there are any categories at the top, you must choose one first, like...
http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=177
But say chose the Using Mac OS X Tiger and you get...
http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=758&start=0
Clicking the Post New Topic link gets you here...
http://discussions.apple.com/post!default.jspa?forumID=758
that even holds crazy ones like iCal that have but one Category... iCal!

  • Are 300 Series switches compatible with pre-standard PoE detection in old Cisco phones?

    Are 300 Series switches compatible with pre-standard PoE detection in old Cisco phones? They don't seem to be (a 7902G won't power on when connected to an SF302-08MP with firmware version 1.1). Is any special configuration needed on the switch to enable this detection?

    Please note that the 200 and 300 Series switches now support Cisco Legacy POE as of September 2011, allowing it to deliver power to 7960, 7940, and other pre-standard phones and APs. Details provided at the following link:

  • Is mountain lion compatible with old (2004) version of microsoft office for MAc?

    I have heard that Mountain Lion is not compatible with old (2004) version of microsoft office for MAc. Is that true?

    ... unless, like me, you open up an uber-important Excel 2004 file in Excel 2011 and get the following dialog box which leads to a trashed Chart, which I need access to EVERY WEEK:
    Can't say I've ever seen such error messages, and I've opened lots of files created back in OS 8. Also many more much older than that from Windows 95 and even MS-DOS.
    Lucky for you; unlucky for me that an important Excel 2004 Chart gets corrupted when opened in Excel 2011!
    I suspect the problem is in the conversion routine that Microsoft added to Office 2011 to update Excel 2004 files.  How conversant are you historically with converting Excel 2004 files that contain charts to Excel 2011?  Because your experience with OS 8, Windows 95 and even MS-DOS has no relevance on this issue.

    You will notice, Kurt, that I based my advice to the OP as "if you are unable or unwilling to upgrade to Microsoft Office 2011..."
    Yes, I saw it. But if everyone did what you would expect with your statement, no one would suggest upgrading to Office 2011. Besides, you're the one who stated "unable or unwilling", not the OP.
    Are you always this argumentative, or is this my lucky day?
    Many people suggest upgrading to Office 2011. I do it frequently in my other "workarounds" type of answers to the Rosetta in Lion/Mountain problem.  I chose not to offer that solution here, and as I expected, someone else, namely you, did!
    The problem was that you finished your suggestion with this comment: "Particularly when it isn't really necessary."  Since this statement was not true in my case (it IS necessary for me to continue to use my important Excel 2004 file as well as some other historical files I have; and conceivably could be important to the OP), I posted the correction.
    You also made the suggestion that: "...the cost of VM software isn't that much less than just upgrading to Office 2011." While certainly true in the vacuum of the OP asking specifically about Word 2004; when the OP becomes aware that his complete library of PPC applications will fail in Mountain Lion, your suggestion about the relative cost to upgrade may no longer be as relevant.
    Lastly: Yes, I commonly state to similar OP's that if they are "unable" (because, for example, they may also have conversion problems with Office 2011, Appleworks 6, Freehand or other programs) or "unwilling" (perhaps they just cannot afford to upgrade all of their PPC apps at this time), that here is an alternative that will keep the status quo available to them, and buy them some more time to consider their options while continuing to use Lion/Mountain Lion and their PowerPC apps.
    Is the relevance of my post to the OP's problem (and your reply to my solution) sufficiently clear for you now?

  • I'm useing lvwutil32.dll and am getting a "Error 10" (New I/O attempted with old I/O in progress), help :-(

    Like my question says, I'm trying to use a buntch of vi's I had gotten about 3 years ago. They work with windows and managing them, along with other standard PC events. I have no problem with the implementation of these vi's into any of my diagrams nor while running the application where my IDE is installed. However, when I try to compile it, I get the "Error 10 occurred at C:\Program File\...\user.lib\lvwutil32.dll". It states 2 possible causes: 1) LabVIEW: Duplicate path & 2) NI-488: New I/O attempted with old I/O in progress".

    It has to do with the way you have your build file constructed. The source and destination can't be the same because the application builder attempts to copy the dll into the build directory-which causes the error.
    To fix the problem, create a directory containing the dlls you will be using in the build. Specify the dlls in this directory as the source file. Next, after adding all the dlls to the project, click on the "Custom Destinations..." button and for each of the dlls you've added, specify the "Windows System Directory" as the destination WITH NO RELATIVE PATH.
    The build should now work...

    sir, I have lost my iphone4 yesterday. Before my warranty expires I bought a new piece in exchange with old one die to so software prob. I have imei number of my old phone but didn't remember new ones.How could I retrieve IMEI no. of my new one to trace it.

    You can't use the IMEI number for tracking it, you can only potentially do that if you had Find My iPhone enabled on it - if you did then you can try locating it via http://icloud.com or the Find My iPhone app on another iOS device.
    For the IMEI number, do you have you got the phone's box or have a backup of the phone on your computer's iTunes : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4061 ?
    If it was stolen then you should report it to the police. You should also change your iTunes account password, your email account passwords, and any passwords that you'd stored on websites/emails/notes etc.

  • Problem making modified WCF web service operation compatible with old client

    Hi,
    I am trying to make a modified version of a a WCF web service work with old clients. The method signature looks like:
    [OperationContract]
    itemList GetItemList(getItemList param);
    I am adding elements to the "getItemList" class which should be optional. The class is generated from XSD schema with xsd.exe (this means we are using schema-first design). The new element is:
    <element name="itemOwner" type="string" maxOccurs="1" minOccurs="0">      </element>
    and the new generated code in the getItemList class becomes:
    private string itemOwnerField;
    public string itemOwner
    get {return this.itemOwnerField;}
    set {this.itemOwnerField = value; }
    When I look at the new WSDL it has:
    <xs:element name="itemOwnerField" nillable="true" type="xs:string"/>
    Now I was expecting the old client to still be able to call the new client, since the new field is nillable. The client has a service reference to the old version of the web service so it uses a C# stub. When the old client tries to invoke the new service,
    I get error:
    The formatter threw an exception while trying to deserialize the message: There was an error while trying to deserialize parameter http://tempuri.org/:param. The InnerException message was 'Error in line 1 position 754. 'Element' 'itemIDField' from namespace
    'http://schemas.datacontract.org/2004/07/ServerBaseAPI' is not expected. Expecting element 'itemOwnerField'.'.  Please see InnerException for more details.
    My interpretation is that the server side of the new service cannot deserialize the incoming message since it expects it to contain itemOwnerField. Why it that, when it is nillable according to the WSDL? What can I do to solve or work around the problem?

    Hi gaor.mawell,
    The nillable attribute is a special attribute in the XML Schema instance namespace that provides an interoperable way to explicitly represent a null value. The receiving end can interpret these as
    null, zero, and null, respectively. There is no guarantee that a third-party deserializer can make the correct interpretation, which is why this pattern is not recommended. The
    DataContractSerializer class always selects the correct interpretation for missing values. So have you tried to use the DataMember's
    IsRequired property? this
    DataMember's
    IsRequired property tells the serialization engine whether the value of itemOwnerField must be presented in the underlying XML.

  • Are documents 5.2 compatible with 5.5?

    Simple question!
    I have this big doc like a book full of tables and images.
    Is it fully compatible with pages 5.5?
    If not is there a way to open it with pages 5.2 ? Does the update uninstall the previous version ? (as it was possibile with 4.3...)
    Thanks a lot!

    You're mistaken, applefans. It is very much true that files created in Pages 5.5.x are incompatible with Pages 5.2.x. I have this issue and I have yet to read anyone here or elsewhere who doesn't.
    As you said yourself, to use files created in Pages 5.5 in Page 5.2, you first need to convert the file's format on the machine that has Pages 5.5. That means they're incompatible by default, and apparently you have to extra steps every time you save a new document if you want to force compatibility with the previous version of Pages (for example, my laptop has Yosemite but my work computer has Mavericks).
    Thank you VikingOSX for explaining the situation and a work-around (as well as another thread: Possible to downgrade to Pages 5.2?)
    It's unacceptable that Pages 5.2, only a few months old, can't open native Pages 5.5 files. Who would think going from 5.2 to 5.5 would break compatibility? People on Mavericks should at least be able to update to Pages 5.5 so they can open the files.
    On another website, I also saw someone suggest opening the file on icloud.com on the machine that has Mavericks / Pages 5.2.x. Haven't tried it yet myself, but it makes sense that this should work to at least be able to access a file that otherwise won't open at all on Mavericks.

  • Are there any displays compatible with 14" iBook G4???

    I've been doing a lot of video editing etc. on my computer for a while now and school work is piling up. I'm planning on getting an iMac next summer but I would really like to be able to use my ibook as a desktop computer. From what I have read none of the displays that apple currently sells are compatible with ibooks because of the graphics card or something. I found out though that you can have a display connected and use both screens. But is there a way that you can have your computer running and closed with an external display to use the computer like on all the new macbooks? I don't need it to be a apple monitor or anything i just need to know if there is any solution..

    as a guess, any LCD with VGA input supposed to work thru a little VGA adapter that comes with the iBook.
    you could probably work with the display lowered if there is something (thin plastic etc) is placed between the base and the display, sleep is activated by the magnetic switch in the display and the magnet at the base
    working with the display lowered could cause heat issues probably, maybe not a good idea

  • Addons - new versions of addon with old versions of B1

    Hi guys,
    Does anyone know if new versions of addons work with old versions of SAP B1?
    I have a client who is asking for the latest Payment Engine (PL70) but they are on SAPB1 2005A SP01 PL12 which has the Payment Engine PL30.
    My thinking is that you will need to upgrade the B1 app to PL34, if you want to use the latest addon?
    or am i way out and infact the addons work independently of B1 and will therefore work on an old patch of B1?
    TIA,
    John Treweeks

    Hi John,
    Patches are bug fixes and do not change functionality (unless the functionality was broken of course ). Addons communicate through the UI and DI APIs which are installed as part of the patch. Therefore, the theory should be that addons are pretty much patch independent.
    But, as has been pointed out above, it's really difficult to predict exactly what results you'll get. I guess sometimes an addon patch could have been released in order to correct a problem that was both addon and DI API related. In that case, you'd need to install the addon patch and the SBO patch.
    I never recommend you go to the latest patch until it has been around for a few weeks. However, going to a patch that is dated just prior to the addon patch release sounds like a sensible policy. In any case, testing is vital, prior to installation on a production site.
    Kind Regards,
    Owen
