  • BT Netprotect Plus Parental Control Improvement su...

This is a suggestion on how BT can improve the parental control capabilities of BT NetProtect Plus, this suggestion would really provide power to parents in controlling the childrens on-line activities.
Whilst BTNPP alows the parental controls to limit access to the internet based on a time schedule and/or totally block access to sites this is rather restrictive as I would like my daughter to have access to the Internet for her homework but during that period, say 19:00-20:00 I want to block certain distracting sites like facebook & youtube, after 20:00 hours the full internet access is restored - really flexible & you can be far more clever with this software than the simple scenario I portray.
I have some trial software on my laptop called "PC Chaperone" (costs $40.00 to purchase) and it does exactly what I have described above as well as other things that BTNPP also does, this has proved really powerfull in administering Internet activity for my family & I would recommend that BT look into providing something similar.
    Mark.

    Hi tomotech,
Thanks for you feedback.  I can see how you suggestion could help alot of people and makes sense.  I cant promise that the changes will be made but I will pass this on to our development team for consideration.
    Cheers

  • Google Chromecast stopped work - Parental controls...

    Hi
I have been using a Chromecast to watch Netflix on my Sony Bravia TV and it has worked fine for several months. Now it has stopped working and I see the message "Chromecast connected to -BT Hub name- but can't access the internet":
The only thing that I can think of that has changed is my I'm on hte BT Parental Controls trial. This allows me to restrict internet access at hte household/router level. I've disabled these completely (see screenshot below) and reconfigured the Chromecast, including a factory reset, but I can't seem to get past this message.
All other internet access works fine - nothing is blocked. I've even unboxed my 2nd Chromecast and set that up and it has the same issue.
Could it be that the Parental Controls have changed hte settings in the Hub? Maybe somethign to do with UPnP?
    Any help welcomed.
    Richard

    Hi,
I have had the same problem and have been tearing my hair out trying to solve it!!
The solution I found was as follows:
go into hub manager and do the following
    turn off smart set up
    switch off Upnp control
Then log into My BT and turn off parental controls and delete parental control settings.
This last action is the most important part as I already guessed ti was the parental controls stopping the Chromecast from accessing the internet, but turning off the parental controls didn't work alone!
although this doesn't help with keeping your children safe, there are other means to control what they access on the internet and until BT sort out this problem I won't be using their parental controls.
    I hope this helps
My kids are happy now they can watch Netflix and Play films.

  • Only user on my mac is parentally controlled

On my mac there is only one user, mine.
but for some reason there are parental controls.
I can't open many applications, visit certain websites.
How can I remove it without restoring?

Do you have an OS X install disc at all? If you, so need to boot off it and enable the root user with a password.
If you don't have a DVD, go into single user mode, and do this:
    mount -uw /
    passwd insertSECUREpwhere
    reboot
each of those r separate commands. When you get back to your Macs login screen, login with the username >console
in the command prompt, type login
the username to use is root and the password is the one you just set.
    now try these again:
    dscl . -mcxdelete /Users/username
dscl . -append /Groups/admin GroupMembership username
    exit
You should be brought back to the main login window.
If it works, there is one more step. Open Directoy Utility in /Applications/Utilities, and there will be an option in one of the menu bars to Disable Root. Press it. Restart the computer and login as your normally would.

  • Unwanted Parental Controls

Just this afternoon we have started to not be able to access much on the internet at all, and there's no reported problems for our area. I'm not able to see most pictures on sites on all the devices, and then when I went on a deviantART page it said the page was blocked because there are parental controls. Nobody in the house has added parental controls, and when I tried logging in to unblock the sites it just locked me out, even though I know my username and password was correct. Can anyone help? It won't even let me send messages. :/

    Hi alicebutler123 & nmk23 & sunray10000,
Thanks for posting and welcome to the forum!
I'm sorry for the problems you're all having with Parental Controls.  This is something we'll need to deal with from here as the community wouldn't be able to help sort out this type of issue.
Click on my username and under the "about me" section of my profile you'll see the link to get in touch with us.
    All the best,

  • Parental Controls - Allows Allow Not Working - a Solution

So this is actually in reply to this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1805596&tstart=0&messageID=911 3494#9113494
Since it is archived, I can't actually reply to that thread though - yet it comes up so high in Google's search that I have to reply somehow.
    Here's the problem's set up:
You have a child with Parental Controls enabled and email managed. The child gets an email from someone or attempts to send email to someone that is not permitted. You have your email address listed as the permission address, and get an email with a button in Apple Mail that reads "Always Allow". Clicking that button does nothing.
If you look at the headers for that request message, they look like this (this is from the child sending to someone that is not yet permitted):
    Subject: (Subject Here)
    Date: Mon, 5 Jul 2010 20:33:39 -0500
    Resent-To: (Your Address Here)
    Resent-From: Child's Name <childs@address>
    X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.915)
    X-Apple-Mail-Parental-Control-Addresses: (Disallowed Recipient Name) <recip@address>
    X-Apple-Mail-Parental-Control-Request: recipients
    Resent-Date: Mon, 5 Jul 2010 20:33:39 -0500
So, after that lengthy bit, here's the issue in a nutshell - many people have multiple email aliases that deliver to one mailbox. I have tony@mydomain and numbski@mydomain. Apple mail is configured to send from numbski@mydomain, but I had the kid's parental controls set to send permission requests to tony@mydomain. The result is that the permission request doesn't even render properly, let alone allow you to act on the request in any useful way.
The fix is either to change the address in the parental controls or change your sending email address in Apple Mail.

    Hi,
I cannot speak from experience, but only from reading the Help, but as I read that, I have the impression that the administrative account is expected to be running on the same machine. While I believe you would also see the messages on another Mac , but only if your account on the child's Mac was setting it all up. Furthermore, I wonder if the release can be triggered from your email account on another machine. But I mostly studied this for someone using Tiger, and have not re-briefed myself for Leopard.
Do you share this Mac, and via hot swap is your Admin account always running?

  • Parental control accounts

    Hi,
Please could somebody explain how I would allow my daughter (whose account I have setup with parental controls) to change her desktop background without me having to key in the admin user & password.
    Thanks very much.

hmmm, thanks for your reply, but I don't want to give her access to ALL of system preferences... can I just allow access to the Desktop ?
Non-admin users can only modify system preferences that change their own account settings. No global or other users' settings can be modified from a non-admin account unless the user knows the admin account's password. So if you give her access to the whole System Preferences app, you don't have to worry about anything getting messed up for anyone else.
But if limiting the user's System Prefs access to the Desktop only is what you really want, you can do this with Workgroup Manager, which you can download as part of the Leopard Server Admin Tools.

  • Parental Controls and Filters

We don't have an ipod Touch yet, but the kids would like one. But before we purchase I want to know if their are parental controls that allow you to filter content over the browser.
I have searched for information and all I can find is that you can turn off the browser which is not really useful. I just want filters in place to avoid accidental exposure.
I know we can set it at our router level but that is not really useful unless they are at home.
It would really be surprising if it did not have browser filters available since it seems the target group for this product is kids. I just want to verify this because I can't seem to find a definite answer.
    Thanks.

Thanks for the response. That seems to be in line with what I have been coming to understand.
Does not seem right that you target a product to kids and don't provide something like this. That should have been at the top of the list. Nothing against Apple products since they are innovative, but this is the one reason why I tend to stay away more often than buying. They always expect you to pay for basic functionality (and web filtering on a device targeted at kids is basic functionality in my opinion) on top of the already expensive price. Anyway, will have to think about it some more.
Thanks again for the response and for the alternative browser. Much appreciated.

  • Parental controls message

I have created a DVD in iDVD and everything works on the burned disc apart from one slideshow. When playing the disc on my mac and on a DVD player it simply states that there is a data error when trying to load the slideshow. On my husband's PC it comes up with a message stating that there are parental controls restricting access to that particular slideshow. What on earth is this all about? I have watched it encrypting and there appears to be no differences in any of the slideshows. Could it be that this is the only slideshow with titles/comments on the photos?

On my husband's PC it comes up with a message stating that there are parental controls restricting access to that particular slideshow.
That's a new one to me. It certainly doesn't have anything to do with iDVD.

  • Parental Controls app settings keep changing on their own

I manage a lab and have setup Parental Controls to allow certain apps. However, later students will launch an app. that I have enabled and get the dialog box saying it isn't allowed. I go back and check parental controls for that computer and the app is now unchecked.
    1) how can I keep this from happening?
    2) is there a preferences file somewhere that I can save and then just upload from time to time?
    Thanks,
    Craig

I suspect your students are smarter than you think they are
Be sure nobody knows the admin password. Change it to be sure and make sure nobody is looking.
Be sure nobody has a Leopard DVD handy.
Be sure all users are non-admin types.
Check all 3rd party apps installed on the machines.
You can also check the console logs on the machines to see how and when the change occurred.

  • HT201304 iOS parental controls do not prevent the child from changing the device passcode.

So the parent cannot get into the device at all unless the child provides the passcode. Sure, the device can be taken away until the child provides the passcode, but why don't parental controls just prevent the passcode from being changed?  Either that, or the parental control passcode should allow the parent to get into the device, over-riding the passcode lock.

We are not Apple iOS programmers.  Just device users like yourself.
feedback.apple.com is where you should send suggestions.

  • EA4500 Parental Controls are not flexible.

    1) Why does it not save my time schedule.  Ex.  If I have built a time schedule for a device, and then decide to temporatily override the schedule (block always, or never) when I go back to the schedule it's gone and replaced by some default schedule.  I end up rebuilding the schedule every time which I can't even do from my mobile.  The internet in my house is used as a punishment/reward system for other behariors so I go through this all the time.  The old software was much more flexible in this respect.
    2) Why can I build a list of saved schedules and apply them to a device (or devices) as needed and change as often as needed.  The old software allowed this.
    3) Device groups.  Why can't I group devices.  I have two sons and each has 3 or 4 devices (pc, phone, Playstation, etc).  I would like to be able to group these devices and be able to apply restrictions to the group.  For example when son has homework I want to turn all his stuff off until it's done, then go back to the schedule on all devices.  I need to be able to do this easily in one step, from my mobile.
Please add these features and flexibility.  I'm sure may parents will benefit.
    Thank you ,
    Howard Smith

Let me know the model number of the Router? The Parental controls feature may vary among various models. There are only two Linksys/Cisco router like E4200 v1 and E1200 v2 has an access features offer both Internet Access Policy and Parental controls where in you can restrict the Internet according to the specified timings.
Here is the link which will help you in setting it up for restricting Internet access: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=47ca0674f26d425e81592ca55ba3152b_21460.xml&pid=80&...

  • Changing parental controls messages

Does any one know where the message that pops up when parental controls blocks access to a web site is stored - I would like to change it to better reflect the use to which the computer is being put.

I believe the file you are looking for, for the most part, is com.apple.applicationaccess.plist. The problem is that, apparently, not all of the restrictions (safari being an example) are found in this file.

  • Changing parental controls on multiple agents

Anyone know how to change the parental controls using ARD? I want to copy a set of permissions and send it out to all of the macs in my lab.

  • Parental controls are not sufficiently flexible

I would like to be able to set parental controls for school nights only.
I would like to be able to enter times rather than being limited to a drop down list.
I  find the current options to be very limiting.
Is these something that can be changed in the near future.
