Are ratings, keywords, metadata etc stored in the original file?

I've not been able to quite figure out if the keywords, ratings, iptc metadata etc are written back to the original files or if they are only stored in the database and/or XMP sidecar files. Can someone enlighten me on this one?
I shot almost entirely in jpeg and really enjoy the lightroom experience as a whole. Over the last few years I've changed platforms and software packages a few times - sometimes my metadata came with the files, sometimes it didn't. I like both Bridge and iView as they write the data back to the files and I'm really hoping that this is the case with Lightroom. Anyone?

I couldn't find an application called "Rember" but ran TechTool. There were no problems encountered with this machine!
I have had no luck in restoring the original Lightroom library. As a result I am using Lightroom only "as needed."
The original library is "in storage" should some solution emerge.
When I can install V1 I will use the program again with the hope that there is an efficient back-up procedure documented in the help files.
When using Lightroom in a limited way I had 2 additional crashes without loosing the new library. However some of the images that I imported as referenced files do not show in the Library mode but are included in the count and are visible in the Slideshow and Web moduals.
This is frustrating and hope there is a good procedure documented in V1 to deal with backing up the library. I liked the Aperature Vault.
I am cautiously optimistic that this problem will not re occur

It sounds as though you may have imported the thumbnails but I can't imagine how.
It all depends on what you mean by very low quality.
Your iPhoto pictures will be around 4,000x3,000 pixels but when they are imported into a standard def timeline they will be around 720x540 which is a tremendous reduction.
They should still look OK but not as good as the brilliant hi-res originals.

I'm afraid I might accidentially overlook messages the way they are handled now.

Somebody here will correct me if I'm wrong, but what you have to do is go into Settings, Mail/Contacts/Calendars and under Mail, turn off "Organize by Thread". I think that will make each message show individually.

Where are my Web Form entries stored in the webBasics plan? Currently—in my trial site—I can access Web Form responses through a Custom Report. Will this option be available to me in the webBasics plan?
My hope is to use the webBasics plan with a Web Form (and a few custom fields) and have the reponses stored for me in the Businsess Catalyst interface.

You do not get the CRM element of BC with the webbasic plan. With BC storing the forms it creates "cases" Which are stored against the "Customer" in the "CRM". You dont have access ot that with the webbasic plan.

How can I batch rename files while preserving the original file name in metadata? (Don't want the old file name as part of the new file name)
(Adobe CS Bridge can do this with some success, but I don't want to be dependant on this software. Results are inconsistent.)

What is your Aperture version? The older versions of Aperture 3 had a problem to apply Metadata changes to the original file.
If you are using the current version Aperture 3.4.5, try to repair the permissions on your Aperture library, if you have not already done so:
Launch Aperture with the key combination ⌥⌘ held down and select "Repair Permissions" from the First Aid PAnel, that will appear.
If that does not help, post back with more information on your original files - are the referenced or managed? Where is your Aperture library located? Since when do you have this problem? And what did you do directly before noticed the problem for the first time?

Wild guess: you're using the the wrong export settings. You'll need to tell us more before we can help you - like the export settings you're usng, the size and format of the originals etc.

Then it asks, do you want to locate the file but when I try that I get a few libraries but am not sure how to locate the particular songs. Some of the songs were purchased and some were transferred from a CD. I have seen the same question asked on the help page but haven't found an answer.

It sounds like your issue here is that iTunes can not find the files for some of the songs you have brought into it. This happens occasionally even if the songs have not been moved from the location that iTunes places them on import or purchase. When you try to use the song, iTunes prompts you to find the file, as you have seen.
To find the file, use the information in this article to navigate through the iTunes media folders -

If you are still unable to locate the files, you may need to download them from the iTunes store again, or rip them from your CDs. See this article for assistance with downloading your past purchases -

Why would you not be able to use your existing Apple ID and iTunes account on a new laptop? If you authorized the computer - you should be able to use your existing account - unless you already had 5 computers authorized with the existing ID - and that was why iTunes would not accept the ID. However, I'm sure that you would have received a popup message from iTunes telling you that you had reached the limit.
I just received a new MBP and my daughter did as well. My entire family shares an Apple ID and we had no issues at all with my Apple ID and iTunes on our new computers and I did not have to sign up for a new account. Did you even try the old ID?

You get this message because iTunes can’t find the file. This can happen for a number of reasons:
The song file or a folder in its path was renamed
The song file or the folder it is in has been moved
The song file has been deleted
The device containing the song files e.g. external drive is not accessible or the drive letter has changed.

I was not complete clear.
Since you never changed the settings in the advanced section of iTunes preferecnes, you have to chech that your music is really in the location setted in the folders reported in the advanced section. If not you have 2 ways: reset the position of this folders or in the actual disk organisation or in the pointing on the preferences.
If you press the reset button you just give to itunes its default setting as for the position of the music files: probably this will be a good choice if you have never changed any default preference.
But before I would check the folders and see if the songs are really there

I went into the original files in the iphoto library and organised the photos there, now when I try to look at the photos in iphoto the tiles are there but when I try to enlarge or put into a slide show a big grey explanation mark occurs?

I tried to organise my iphoto originals to it would be easier to back them up onto my hard drive, so I renamed them and grouped them in the orinigal file. Now when I go onto iphoto to view the photos in a slide show a big exclamation mark comes up and if I click on the photo to see the original file it can't find it. Any ideas?

You won't be able to run the rebuild function and restore your library becaue you renamed and regrouped your original photos from the Finder. I doubt if you can change the names back to their original names and put them back in the folders they were in originally so your only option is get your backup library and replace the one you damaged.
If you don't have a backup copy of the library from just before the problem that contains all of your photos you will need to start over from scratch as follows:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
2. Open the library package like this.

3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.

This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
In the future stay out of the iPhoto Library package and only access the photos using iPhoto.

Files are saving to desktop instead of into the original folder

Is there a simple fix? Some files, such as Quark files are saving to the desktop, rather than to the folder in which the original file resides. I've checked everywhere for the selection "save to same location as original file.," or some such thing. Help!

This usually means the original music file has been been deleted from the HDD. If you feel it has not then click "locate" and navigate to where the song file is on the HDD and choose it. You can use Spotlight to locate it if necessary.
