Are RAW files able to be edited in the Aperture "Free Trial" download

I recently downloaded the free 30 day trial version of Apple's Aperture 3 after purchasing a Sony Alpha NEX-3 camera. It was my intention to use the trial as a tutorial for when I buy the actual program in a few weeks.
During a vacation, I used the NEX-3 to take several hundred photos, with the camera set to take both a JPEG image as well as a RAW image. I then downloaded the trial and set the Import settings to import both files with JPEG as the master. The RAW version of the file, however, will not display -- i get a message saying "Unsupported image format. I checked the Apple list of cameras of which Aperture supports the RAW format and NEX-3 was definitely on the list. However, when I veiw the file name for the RAW version of each photo, it is given thusly in the metadata: (file name).ARW. I am confused...
I would like to begin editing the RAW version of all of my photos before the trial expires. Did I do something wrong upon import? Can I change the file name in my camera so that the RAW photo files import as (file name).RAW instead of (file name).ARW? Is it as simple as the free trial not including the ability to edit photos in the RAW format? Or, am I just missing something simple? Please help before my trail expires at the end of the month...

You need to download the latest camera raw update from Apple.

photoshop is turning my raw files into jpg after editing with out flatten the layers instead of psd files. when I go to save they are jpg. This started 2 days ago - no problems before that

How are you doing the save?  Just choosing File - Save?
Photoshop remembers the last "master file" format you saved something in.  If the current document is capable of being saved in that format, it will default to that format for the next save.
What happens if you do the following:
    1.  Open your raw file, and edit it.
    2.  File - Save As, and in the Save as type field choose Photoshop (*.PSD;*.PDD).
    3.  Complete the save operation.
I'm betting that will result in your having saved a PSD format file.
In summary, change your habit to use File - Save As to save your master document and you can't go wrong.

I can no longer import raw files from my Panasonic Lumix LX5 into Aperture 3.3.2 - raw files from my other Canon cameras are fine. Am still running Lion (10.7.4) - NOT Mountain Lion. Tried all available software updates - all up to date apparently but still no joy. OS X Lion shows the LX5 as a supported file format. I dont want to have to upgrade to Mountain Lion just to see if this solves the problem. Any ideas please.

Since when did this happen? Directly after you upgraded to Aperture 3.3.2?
If it happened directly after the upgrade the problem may be, that the raw support for your camera got lost. For some posters it helped to register the raw support again, see this post by Alan Roseman:
Aperture 3 preview of raw file greenish
If this does not help, you may need to reinstall Lion to bring back the raw support.
But if the problem occured independent of a new installation, ypu may have a problem with your camera or the card you are using. Have you tried to use a different card or to reformat the card in the camera?

Ah, gotchya. Your Fuji camera must not then be on this list here?  http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html  You could presumably use the sw that came with the camera and create jpegs or tiffs with them and keep them in aperture along side the unsupported raws, in stacks.

  • PSE 12 hides Panasonic RAW files. How do I unhide the files?

PSE 12 has a new feature under Preferences/Camera or Card Reader called "Alutomatically Stack RAW and JPEG." Checking this will stack a RAW & JPEG file combination, i.e., when shooting with the camera's RAW + JPEG setting checked. In my case PSE 12 appears to stack my Panasonic RAW files and each JPEG thumbnail shows the right facing arrow to expand the stack. When I click the arrow the arrow disappears but the stack does not expand to reveal the RAW file. The RAW file still exists on the hard drive, but I can't find any way to reveal it in PSE (I've not tried to re-import the RAW files because there are a lot of files in a lot of folders.) This is rather critical and needs to be fixed. Any ideas??

The fact that I tried your scenario with PSE12 and your RAW files rules out any kind of support drop

  • HELP! "There are 309 files that don't belong in the project"

I needed to reformat my OS, so I backed up all my data onto DVD+RW's. (Verbatim brand.) including my imovies. I copied the entire "blahblah.iMovieProject" folder onto the DVD, then copied it back onto the drive after the reinstall. But now when I click on the project, it prompts me about this:
"There are 309 files that don't belong in the project"
    and then this:
"There are 160 stray clip files in the project folder. Would you like to put them on the clips pane?"
After I click on "Leave Files Alone" for both of them, (versus move to trash, and Move files to clips pane, respectively), The project opens completely BLANK.
Oh great. Please inform. Am I out of luck?
Oh, btw, it also created like 10 versions of each photo in the "Media" folder. ick. what happened?...

Also, one more thing! Now that this has happened, even after I quit and restart the computer, upon opening the application, instead of starting out with a brand new project, the same prompts appear, and then leaves me with that seemingly corrupt project which is blank.

This is the last paragraph from my very first response to you, post #1 in this thread:
…Additionally, you need to install the DNG Converter, not just "download" it, and you need to launch it and run it on each folder of NEFs you wish to convert to raw DNGs.  [emphasis added]

  • I edited RAW files as DNG's and need the xmp files- are they embedded in the DNG files?

I was editing for someone else and the like the xmp files to see the RAW adjustments- I edited them as DNG because that is how I'm used to doing it. Now I know but they want me to supply the xmp files which did not write. Is there a wat to do this or do I need to re edit them as RAW's?

DNG files don't have XMP sidecar files. Everything is written to the header of the DNG. And as far as Lightroom goes, It will be necessary for you to specifically write the data to XMP files. Otherwise the adjustments will only be stored in the catalog.

  • Where are RAW files kept in iPhoto?

I just recovered a bunch of photos from an SD card I accidentally erased.  (Eh, they were just my 17-month year old's first Christmas Eve with Santa, no big deal, right?) Thankfully, I was able to recover them using a utility called CardRaider. (Worth every friggin' cent of the $17.99 it cost me.) But now I have a folder full of NEF files, which are the RAW images.  I'd like to keep them with all the rest of my iPhoto files, but I can't seem to track them down.  Where can I stash these files to keep them with the other thousands of RAW files I have?

    What version of iPhoto?
Assuming that you have a default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) then all of your imported photos are copied bit for bit into th eiPhoto library and can be accessed at any time by exporting them with kind = original
To see your RAW photos make a smart album with kind = RAW

  • Why are my RAW files created by Vuescan so dark in Aperture?

I've been scanning images using Vuescan and saving as 16/48 bit RAW images. These images always look great in Vuescan but when I import these images into Aperture, the images are very dark. I need to do an exposure correction of +2 just to start seeing anything in the midtones. Ed Hamrick, the author of Vuescan, says this is because the RAW files have a gamma of 1.0 (coming straight of the CCD). If I save the same scan in TIFF format, the images look pretty much the same in Aperture and Vuescan.
My question is what benefits does saving in RAW bring given the large adjustments that I must make. I know I can automate the adjustments at import which might make this less of an issue but I wonder if saving in TIFF is nearly as good. Some of the pictures have a wide dynamic range with lots of shadow detail.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for any help.
    Bob

My frustration has been that I am doing the processing twice which is pointless. I need to choose a workflow. Mind you that if Apple supported the full DNG specification, it would be able to deal automatically with these RAW scanned DNG files (I believe they are linear DNGs) and automatically compensate during import just as Lightroom does. I am using the trial version of Aperture - which I feel really comfortable using - but I think I may take Lightroom for a spin prior to making a final choice of software.
As I tried to clarify, there is no benefit in saving as RAW from a scanner. Just save as a normal 16-bit TIFF and you'll and up with a simplified workflow and no loss of data nor detail. Actually, a DNG is internally just a TIFF.
If Apple fully-supported the DNG specification, then the RAW Fine Tuning adjustment would be available with its auto-exposure button to get a good starting point for tweaking the images.
You could provide Apple with feedback via, Aperture>Provide Aperture Feedback.
If I continue with Aperture, I am thinking that I will save these files as RAW TIFFs and do the gamma adjustment at import. This should streamline the workflow by making it possible to scan two 4x5s at one without the need to tweak each one in the scan and then do all my processing in Aperture (or Lightroom). I will just trust the scanner.
You shouldn't trust your scanner, just as you shouldn't always trust matrix metering or 'I'll fix that in post". Aiming for the best starting material is aiming for the best results. So instead, carefully examine each scan, which will not take you that long BTW.
I will still create the scanner profile of the IT8 target which I should then be able to use as a proofing profile to compensate for any color bias in the Fuji Provia film used. Perhaps I am wrong about this.
Actually, you're wrong on this. The IT8 provides an input profile, and not an output profile or working space. Imagine scanning a slide and printing it. Softproofing for IT8, then you can't softproof for your printer and vice versa.
Your post has allowed me to really think through my workflow and I really appreciate the input I've received in this thread. Now, I just wish I could get Apple to add support for Linear DNG (or whatever format Vuescan RAW DNG is which I know contains three colors per pixel rather then one as in Camera Raw) which would provide the additional tools to deal with these DNGs at import.
Although linear DNG support would indeed be nice for unsupported camera's, it is not necessary here. If Vuescan DNG has three channels, than it is a TIFF. (since demosiacing MUST have been applied, there are no scanners with a Foveon sensor as of yet)
Well to cut a very long story short just use TIFF for scans. It's a necessity for proper colormanagement and will simplify your workflow.

  • When are RAW files modified?

I know that Lightroom is based on the idea of non-destructive editing.
However, even tho I'm still a LR newbie, it does look to me like there
are a few cases in which LR does modify a RAW file as it came from the
camera (e.g., the NEF bug). Where would I find an accurate list of the
operations that do cause a modification of RAW files. (For example, is
inserting metadata on import one of these?)
(This is my first post here. Does anybody else find it odd that the
posting software considers "Lightroom" and "metadata" to be misspelled?)
    Many thanks.
    --Milt--

    Milt,
    >(This is my first post here. Does anybody else find it odd that the posting software considers "Lightroom" and "metadata" to be misspelled?)
    Yes :)
    >I know that Lightroom is based on the idea of non-destructive editing. However, even tho I'm still a LR newbie, it does look to me like there are a few cases in which LR does modify a RAW file as it came from the camera (e.g., the NEF bug).
Is the term 'nondestructive editing' being used correctly here? The way I typically see the term used in Adobe's literature and doc is not applicable to RAW files.
Before CS3 Photoshop did/does destructive editing with its filters. With Photoshop filters if you apply certain effects and filters they degrade the image in memory so if you try to apply an opposite filter or undo the effect, tough luck. Nondestructive editing in CS3 (and in Lightroom) allows application of effects and filters in a 'virtual' manner that can be backed out, applied multiple times or changed without image degradation.
None of this applied to RAW files because Photoshop and Lightroom do not touch the *image* bits of any camera manufacturer's RAW file (metadata changes aside). You cannot open a RAW file like a .NEF in Photoshop and save it as a .NEF RAW file -- it has to be saved as PSD, TIFF, DNG or whateverand you can do destructive editing in those formats with filters, rotations, etc. The original RAW file itself, however, always remains intact. So no PS or LR editing can be destructive in that sense.
Lightroom virtualizes all of its edits so you can back out any LR edit without degrading image quality. That is nondestructive editing -- again, of the image itself. That said, changing camera metadata in a RAW file is not something I can see immediate use for, I admit. But even that doesn't touch the actual RAW image bits.
    >>For myself, I will not start using LR on anything except experimental copies of my photo library until I am fairly confident I have this list in hand so I can avoid doing the things on the list.
Your call, of course. But the only way to avoid something bad happening to your file is to have a copy of the file somewhere else. A lot of things can damage your file that have nothing to do with LR. I have copies of all my photos on a separate computer. My next step wrt that will be to burn Blu-Ray disks to keep offsite.
I also have 5500 photos that Lightroom is doing quite an amazing job with for me overall. Printing (certainly with titles) is the weakest link in LR (I've made some feature enhancement requests/recommendations for the Print module in that area) but the rest of the program has removed most of the hassle, drudgery and unnecessary expense/waste from photography and made it a truly new, fresh joy again, just like it was for me 30 years ago when I bought my first SLR.
    Cheers,
    Robert

  • Why are .RAW files showing as black video?

I've been editing broadcast spots using .RAW files from the Canon 5D and they have been working beautifully.  Now on the day they are due to the stations everything is showing up as just black screens.  Even in the Media Browser the files are there but there is nothing when I playback.

I have exactly the same problem, on a MacBook Pro after having upgraded from 10.4.x to 10.5.0.
I did a clean install of Leopard on an external firewire disk, and there it was all ok.
Then I phoned Apple support about it. The issue was new to them, but advised me to make a clean install and then migrate my old users from a backup image. I went through this time consuming procedure and, unfortunately, found the problem persisting. So I will do it again but before migration I will check if those files are correctly recognized (forgot to do that last time). Since I was advised by Apple not to migrate the network related data i will do so this time.
Of course, I'd like an easy fix much better!
Update to 10.5.1 did NOT help.
