Are replacement phones from apple unlocked?

Apple supplied me with new phone  but it is locked - do apple need to unlock please? I have contacted my provider (EE) who I am leaving but they have said as apple gave me a replacement phone they don't need to unlock as they didn't supply and that it should have been supplied unlocked - I have changed providers as had lots of problems with EE and when I put the o2 sim in it says it is locked? Any help would be appreciated. thank you

Usually unlocking the phone is done by the provider, who informs Apple to update their data, that this  certain phone can be unlocked through iTunes.
If your original phone has been unlocked by the carrier before, he has to notify Apple that your replacement should be unlocked as well.
If you contacted Apple Support to replace the phone? I had to replace mine once and got an email from Apple stating the IMEI and serial number of my old phone and the ones from the new replacement, so that I could pass this info on to my carrier, to get the new device unlocked as well.

    the itunes back up can be found in preferences/devices on ur itunes
    the preferences can be reached by going to:
    windows pc: edit/preferences
    mac pc: itunes/preferences
    check ur icloud as well in case u had the 'back up to icloud' option checked instead of the 'to this computer' option when u backed it up to ur itunes.
    if neither of those have ur back up then ur back up is not in that pc and not in ur icloud for that apple id. it might be somewhere else (another pc maybe) or it doesnt actually exist.

    Usually you can't tell the difference, they seem double check the refurbished ones, just to make sure they don't come back

    So I got a replacement iPhone 3GS from Apple since my original had problems. The tech told me that these phones are practically brand new and only some of the internal componets are reused. The battery is new they said. I'm a little bit disappionted as I paid for a brand new phone just two months ago. Is this standard Apple policy? Is there a way to get a new phone next time?

    ok, but you really think that is normal that is everything right if 3 system, all together, stop working after only 2 months?? and looking on the web we are not isolated cases. I can understand one, but 3?? what I'm asking, not to you of course, but in general, is normal that the life of the iphone is less that the one of a "long life milk"? in any case I can also thank apple for giving me 3 refurb items while maybe other company will have take the items for months without giving me back nothing, but, I'm asking if it's worth it to pay so much for a 2 months life phone..

    I have just had my iphone 3gs replaced under warranty at the apple store, the original had been on o2 but it had been unlocked by them  16-17 months ago.
    Is the new phone locked to o2 ?

    As above the iPhone should be unlocked in line with status of the original .Since it is the Genius that processes the replacement through their system 
    I must admit when I had my unlocked O2 replaced I made absolutely sure the Genius knew it was unlocked and had no problems
    If there has been a problem take it straight back and they can unlock it there and then
    If it is a distance to the Apple Store  call Apple Care in UK and the will sort it.
    This has worked well for others so they will sort it
    try another sim and you will soon find out as long as it is an iPhone sim

    I might add, you can insert a case number into http://www.apple.com/support/repairstatus/
    and it will typically tell you the tracking number once something ships, and link you straight to the tracking page of the shipper.
    I say typically, because I don't work for Apple, and things may have changed since my last repair. Call AppleCare again to ask the question if it doesn't work that way.

    Can you clarify your problem? Are you having trouble restoring your new iPhone from a previous phone's backup? Or are you having trouble logging into iMessage?

    I bought the company unlocked phone from apple store Canada. It was originally loaded with software 4.2 and was working fine here in SaudiArabia.  Yesterday I updated with IOS 5.0.1.  Now it is showing that sim is not valid.  The same sim works fine in other phones.

    Here's and update on my problems and here are are some screen shots of the types of problems I've been having since the v5.0.1 update. Keep in mind these are native apps and I have tried the rebuild phone crap many times, nothing helps.
    This is screen shot of a what happened when I tried to use my camera one day, both the front and back cameras were all black. I had to power cycle the phone to get rid of this problem. The cameras appeared to be working correctly, I could focus and zoom but it was all black.
    Here is an image of what happened when I searched for something in a map. This is after I picked the choice I wanted, the keyboard disappeared but the list didn't. I had to force close the app and restart it for this problem to go away. Who knew five bars on ATT was possible.
    And finally this is the messaging app, although you would not know it. I had to return to home screen (after a long pause for it to process the button push) and return to the messaging app. This happens all the time with the messaging app and the notifications sounds drive me crazy. If  i'm using the phone, say browsing the web and I get an incoming message its almost 100% of the time the messaging app will screw up. The sound will play at the wrong time or not at all, message will show up in notifications and diasapear in message app or Ill have a problem like this:

    I just did a google search on this issue. OMG, I got a ton of videos on this or similar issues. Each one says in some way to clear the cache, reset the data, etc. Why in the world would this continue to happen and they not do a fix that resloves this without having to lose or stop what your doing. This is a very long and constant issue it seems with Android phones as there must have been pages and pages of what I now call "Unfortunately"  So I am going to pray that Verizon helps me  out and gets me away from this issue and helps me go back to iPhone or try the Samsung.

    If the iPhone has, subsequent to the original purchase, been legitimately unlocked (as happens in UK )by the carrier, then a replacement either as a warranty or out of warranty will be unlocked as long as the transaction is carried out in original country.
    However make sure the Genius is clearly aware that the iPhone is unlocked
    I have replaced an iPhone4 in warranty and replacement was correctly locked whilst a 3G was unlocked by O2 and the out of warranty replacement was correctly unlocked

    Either wait it out or contact Asurion and complain. They sent you a used phone as JB said above. There is nothing anyone here or at Apple can do about it.

    Depends what Apple store & in what country. The UK Apple stores have officially unlocked iPhones, as well as the Canadian stores. There are no officially unlocked iPhone 5's available in the US.

    I can't find anywhere where the upgrade fee is explained fully. I know if I buy my phone from apple, it is a "verizon" phone -- will they charge me the upgrade fee, will verizon charge it when I activate the phone, or does it not apply if I buy it via the apple store?

    If you are buying the phone at full price (or Verizon EDGE), there won't be any upgrade fee.  If you are getting a subsidized phone (2-year contract) there will be an upgrade fee.

    On June 17 I placed 2 separate orders for 32GB phones, both lines eligible for upgrade pricing. After waiting patiently since June 17 I received an email from Apple today that there is a "problem" with the 2nd order and to check with AT&T to resolve it. I spent 1 1/2 hrs on the phone with them while they were trying to find the problem, they couldn't find one and said the 1st phone has already gone through and the 2nd phone is eligible and the account is OK etc. I then called Apple and the guy I talked to there now says that because this was a family plan that I am only able to purchase 1 phone online and that the other one has to be bought in a store or from AT&T. I thought that as long as it was 2 separate orders it was OK, was I wrong and now I have to try & find one in a store now?
    I am so frustrated.....

    Kathy, I had a similar problem when I went to order two phones from Apple on June 16, I also have a FamilyTalk plan. I had an Apple CSR on the phone when I made the orders. I suspected that both orders had gone threw for the same phone # but the CSR assured me that everything was okay. So I ordered the phones on June 16, they both went to Prepared to Ship on July 3. Then on July 4 one of the orders went back to its previous status, then the email from Apple came on July 5 saying that there was a problem with an order and I should contact AT&T and of course it does not say which order. So I contacted AT&T and it turns out that two orders went in for my wife's phone # even though the CSR said the order was fine and she checked both orders for me. The AT&T rep I talked to on July 5 said he talked to Apple and that I would have to cancel the order in question and re-order the phone for my #. So I ended up putting in a new order with AT&T because of the 7-10 ship rather than the 3 weeks from the Apple site. So the first phone is still Prepared to Ship and the second phone sits in backordered status with AT&T. I wish they would have informed me of the problem right away rather than three weeks after I put in the initial order. So I feel your pain, you are not alone.
