Are scanned PDF files searchable without using OCR?

I want to scan documents into PDF format and would like to be able to search and index content, is there a way to do this without running OCR against it first?  If not is there a product or iFilter that can do OCR and index the context without actually changing the format of the document itself?

It is not possible to search a raster graphic for text, since that is what a scan is before it is OCRd. It is possible to OCR without changing the format of the document. Acrobat has the capability to insert the characters behind the graphic rather than replace the graphic.

    How to make a scanned PDF file searchable? I bought an Adobe service which I thought allowed me to do this, but I do not see any instructions how to do it.

    Hi,
    When using Adobe ExportPDF online service, it will run OCR itself when converting any PDF to other file format.
    It also depends upon the quality of the scanned document, so it might be possible that it does not make the file searchable.

  • How can users who have Acrobat Reader only save scanned pdf files so that the text on them is searchable using ctrl-F?  I just use the recognize text with ocr feature in the full version of Acrobat and this seem to do the trick. Reader doesn't work!

    Our users have scanned pdf files they want to be able to search using ctrl-f.  I got them to be searchable by doing a recognize text using ocr with Acrobat Professional vesion 8.  They want to know if they can make the files searchable with Acrobat Reader only or if they need the full Acrobat Professional software to make the files searchable.
    Thanks for the help!!

    To clarify a bit they need to have Adobe Acrobat, not Adobe Reader. Reader has not been associated with the Acrobat name for 3 or more versions. The process you are asking about is a creation process - the purpose of Acrobat - and NOT a reading feature.

    I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 plus I create PDF files for work some are scan pdf docs. When I install Photoshop Elements 10 it DOES convert all the PDF files to Photoshop Elements-10 Docs. it even changes and shows the PSE-10 Icon. So I am alway installing PSE-10 or uninstalling it. If I send the  PDF file that has been automatically converted to a PSE-10 the person I send the file to can not open it because they do not have PSE-10. What can I do to stop PSE-10 from converting my PDF files? Don't tell me to upgrade PSE-10 I tried their on-line program and  it is too advance for a hobby photographer like myself and their Help Desk is impossible to reach.

  • How to Make PDF files searchable?

    I am scanning hundreds of Meeting Minutes into PDF files.  How do I make sure they are searchable so that I won't have to create a separate index?  I prefer to let the reader type a word in the  "Search" box.  Thanks.

    You're right.  Fortunately there is an OCR in my scanning software, so I tested one PDF file I had already scanned, and yes it was searchable.  Apparently not all PDF files I see are searchable because whoever scanned those files did not have OCR in their scanning software.  I am now glad I spent a fortune on my Epson scanner.

  • Creating PDF file in XI using iText

    Hi all,
    I am trying to create a PDF file in XI using itext. The PDF file is getting created in my target ftp server but I am not able to open the PDF. It is throwing the below error while opening.
    "Adobe Reader could not open the sample.pdf because it is either not a supported file or because the file has been damaged(for example,it was sent as an e mail attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)"
    I am using the below code in my udf
    String filename= "Sample.pdf";
    try
    Document document= new Document();
    PdfWriter pdfwriter=PdfWriter.getInstance(document,new FileOutputStream(filename));
    document.open();
    document.add(new Paragraph("Hi How are you?"));
    document.close();
    DynamicConfiguration conf = (DynamicConfiguration) container
           .getTransformationParameters()
           .get(StreamTransformationConstants.DYNAMIC_CONFIGURATION);
    DynamicConfigurationKey key = DynamicConfigurationKey.create( "http://sap.com/xi/XI/System/File", "FileName");
    conf.put(key,filename);
    catch(Exception e)
    return "";
    Kindly let me know if you have any information on this.

    hi,
    I had used custom adapter module for creating the PDF file.
    you have to use java mapping if you want to create pdf without using adapter module.
    You need to import iText library available at http://itextpdf.com/.
    How to use external jar files ??
    External Jar files in UDF
    code may look like this:
    import java.io.BufferedReader;
    import java.io.InputStream;
    import java.io.InputStreamReader;
    import java.io.Reader;
    //1. AbstractTransformation class is imported.
    // The associated jar file is: com.sap.xpi.ib.mapping.lib.jar
    import com.sap.aii.mapping.api.AbstractTransformation;
    import  com.sap.aii.mapping.api.DynamicConfiguration;
    import com.sap.aii.mapping.api.DynamicConfigurationKey;
    import com.sap.aii.mapping.api.StreamTransformationException;
    import com.sap.aii.mapping.api.TransformationInput;
    import com.sap.aii.mapping.api.TransformationOutput;
    import com.sap.aii.mapping.api.InputHeader;
    public class xyz extends AbstractTransformation {
    public void transform(TransformationInput inp, TransformationOutput out) throws StreamTransformationException {
         getTrace().addInfo("JAVA Mapping Called");
                         InputStream inData = inp.getInputPayload().getInputStream();
                        // pdf conversion code
                        out.getOutputPayload().getOutputStream().write(outData.getBytes("UTF-8"));
    check http://help.sap.com/javadocs/pi/SP3/xpi/index.html for java mapping api.
    Thanks.

  • Unable to open scanned pdf files today.  Was able to before.

      Today when attempting to open scanned pdf files which opened successfully yesterday, this message appears:
    "Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported."
    As I mentioned this was not a problem yesterday.  Suggestions? Thanks!

    If you are trying to open a file in paint, why are you posting in the Adobe Reader forum. Paint is an MS product. Since you have a pdf file, try opening the file in Adobe Reader using the File->Open dialog box. That should work.

  • I am having a problem converting a scanned pdf file into Excel.

    I am having a problem converting a scanned pdf file into Excel. I do not get the columns and rows to align, just a single column of everything. Any suggestions?

    Export makes use of what is "in" a PDF.
    Good export is the "silk purse" and, ya know, you canna make a silk purse from a sow's ear (which is what any scanned image in PDF is with regards to export).
    The quality of export is dictated by the quality of the PDF. We are taking about the "inner essences" of the PDF (e.g., degree of compliance with the PDF Standard - ISO 32000-1).
    So, what goes in goes out or "GIGO".
    This has nothing to do with Acrobat or Acrobat's export process.
    A well-formed Tagged PDF (compliant to ISO 32000-1 & ISO 14289-1, PDF/UA-1) provides a PDF that proactively
    supports content export by Acrobat.
    To get the good stuff from export you start with a well-formed Tagged PDF.
    Goodstuff In — Goodstuff Out
    or
    Garbage In — Garbage Out
    "GIGO"
    Be well...

    Hi @kitesquid,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
    I understand that your HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909g, does not save a scanned PDF file on Windows 8.1 64 bit. I am sorry to hear this, but happy to help!
    To verify the printer's hardware is functional, are you able to make copies from the scanner glass? Copying a Multipage Original.
    In the meantime, please try our HP Print and Scan Doctor, and let me know the results!
    Hope to hear from you soon!

    I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 10. However it converts all my pdf files to Photoshop Elements 10 so I can not email them because no one can read them they are not pdf files anymore. What do I do?

    Nothing has been converted. You first need to convince yourself of this.
    Start Adobe Reader (or Adobe Acrobat, if you have it). Use Open from the File menu. Pick one of your PDF files. Does it open OK? If not, what happens?
    Ok, these emails. What exactly happens when trying to open them?

  • How can i edit a scanned pdf file in adobe 9 pro ?

    how can i edit a scanned pdf file in adobe acrobae 9 pro ?

    With Clear Scan you get the text replacing the graphics of text. That can be edited. If you do searchable PDF conversion, you can still edit (I think). However it is an edit of the hidden layer of text behind the graphic and does not show on screen normally.
    Usually the best choice is to ask the author for the original file to edit. If that is a copyright issue, then you should not be editing anyway.

  • Why are my ".pdf" files not opening in Creative Cloud? The tumbril shows up as a blank page!

    I just switched over from Adobe Acrobat Cloud to Creative Cloud; a tedious task. Most of my files open up fine, but some of them show up as a blank page thumb nail. They do have ".pdf" extension. Any ideas as to why this is happening, and what I can do to correct the issue?
    Ty

    @masood131 - A few questions:
    Are the pdf files without a thumbnail password protected? (Probably not but just checking since we will not be able to provide a preview for such a file).
    If you click on the blank thumbnail to view the individual file page do you see a larger preview image, or is that blank too?
    If you refresh the browser page does the thumbnail image show?
    If you upload the file a second time do you see a thumbnail image?
    If there is a problem with a specific file feel free to share a link with me via a private message and I can investigate further.
