Are screensavers still necessary?

Is a screensaver still needed? I have a Mid 2013 13" MacBook Air. I'm curious if I need to be concerned with using a screensaver. I use one when I'm in public or around others, just to ensure privacy and all. But when I'm alone, can I just turn off my screensaver? Is there a possibility of image retention or screen burn in from not using a screensaver on modern displays?
Thanks for any direction you can provide.

Hey OGELTHORPE,
If memory serves me right, screensavers were originally created to ensure that older CRT monitors would not experience burn in or image retention when left on a particular screen for too long. Considering that, it begs the question, are they still needed for computers with modern monitors?
I have noticed a few retina MBP owners raise the issue if image retention on their displays so perhaps for them it is an issue.
Or will I damage my MBA screen if I do not use a screensaver?
Though not 'proof positive' I have not seen any such complaint for 'ordinary' led MBPs or MBAs nor have I witnessed any such issue with my equipment.  One could argue that it may not be necessary, but then a nice screen saver does have some entertainment value.    I can leave it for each individual to decide if they want it or not.
Ciao.

  • Which groups are still necessary?

    Hello guys,
from the beginning of my arch usage I'd put myself into the groups the beginners guide recommended. But which of them are today still useful and which of them simply unneeded?
Here's my list of groups I'm in:
    [orschiro@thinkpad ~]$ groups
network video audio optical storage users abs
To concretise my question: would my network still work when I'm not in network or would my intel graphic setup with kms display everything correctly when I'm not in video? Would I have sound without audio group? [...]
    Best regards

Does anyone actually find the users group useful?  Especially if everyone is a member....    Giving everyone permission for something can be handled with standard file permssions.

Restore your library from your most recent backup (you do keep regular backups, I hope).  If the hard drive is in any way salvageable it may be possible to mount it in an external enclosure, connect it to your PC, and retrieve data from it even if it is not functioning as a primary OS drive (if you don't have the kit necessary to do this, your local PC repair shop may be able to help).  Failing that, you can always recreate your library by re-importing your CDs.

  • Are Macs still Anti-virus strong? What software is good with OSX

    hi all
I've been a long Mac user and read and heard that Macs are not proned to viruses.
Are Macs still Anti-virus strong? What anti-virus and fraud alert software is good with OSX?
    Thanks
    Web dude

At this time there have been no confirmed Mac OS X viruses (subject to the semantic debate about whether the iChat exploit is properly classified as a virus or a trojan horse and not counting the Word macro virus that can affect Office v.X or non-updated copies of Office 2004), very few trojans and no adware or spyware. I therefore do not feel that antivirus or antispyware software is necessary at this time as long as users are careful about what they download from the Internet or accept as attachments via email.
It's never wise to become complacent, though, so security precautions are not wasted. Such security precautions mostly are common sense: don't download and run files from sites you don't know, don't double-click on attachments in emails you aren't expecting and/or from people you don't know, and make sure you password your system and keep that password secure as well as not having your system available and unattended (which also is a precaution against theft). In addition, it's possible for someone to inadvertently forward a Windows virus or worm to a PC user though you'd have to do it manually and said Windows malware cannot infect the Mac.

If you do decide you wish to run antivirus software, I think that the donationware clamXav should be more than enough provided you remember to scan your system from time to time.
If you are running Windows on your system, either via BootCamp, Parallels Workstation or another solution, then that copy of Windows is subject to all the myriad exploits common to the Windows world, so you need to take full precautions, including running both antivirus and antispyware software.

  • Heatsink replace still necessary or not?

after getting rid of the rss with the help of firmware - is it still necessary to replace the heatsink?

    Halli,
    Thanks for the link.
The article came out on September 6th, so the firmware update it refers to is the previous one.
The writer's understanding of the issue seems to be a little patchy. For Example:
    • He refers to the "CPU thermometer itself". In fact there are four heat sensors built into the CPU, but none of them are involved here. The problem is with one of the two thermistors which are part of the heat sink assembly.
    • Any short circuit is likely to be caused by the insulation on the thermistor's leads being damaged by heat rather than by expansion of the heat sink.
    • There was no relocation of the sensor and cable on the new heat sink, just added protection.
I can't see any reason at all for a recall now; most people are not affected by the issue and most of those that are can easily fix it in one minute with the firmware update.

How do I completely clear my ipod music, and how can I solve the syncing problem?

Sync works the same way it always has, connect the device, select the content desired to sync and sync.
All the media should be in iTunes already, iDevices are not and have never been backup devices.
If this is a new computer, move the content from the old computer to the new computer.

    Subject : Slideshow looks bad
    Hello guys
I have a project in my Final Cut just about done.  I want to add my slideshow as part ofthe project and burn it to DVD.  Inmy slideshow, there are some stills from the movie clips and some downloadedfrom the internet but they all look blur when playback and even worse if Iapply Ken Burn to it.   Pleasesome one can tell my how to do it right or it can’t be done because thedownload quality and stills from the clip are not suitable or slideshow.  Thank you

    Thank you Ross.
The entire DVD containing Quick Time movies (Final CutExpress project) and slideshow was done in iPhoto.  The Final Cut project was rendered prior to export to QT,  the slideshow was sent to iDVD withoutrendering. The slideshow with most of the pictures from my still camera incombination with stills from movie clips and some downloaded from the Internet. After burning, the movie playback is perfect but the slideshow is not.  The slideshow containing 3 differentkinds of pictures; those from my still camera looks OK; the stills from themovie clips and from the Internet are not.  I don’t have much knowledge in this game, but I think NTSCwith frame size 720x480, and the downloaded picture Item Property shows most ofthem are between 400 to 500 x 300 to 600, may be both of them are not suitablefor TV screen while the stills from my still camera looks OK because they are2048x1536.  Please enlightenme.  Once again, thank you so much,I really appreciate the time you offered.

    Hi Rachel,
Have you tried reinstalling Microsoft Word? Have you tried reinstalling Office? Have you run any updates recently for Microsoft Office? There was one that came out this week. You may wish to ask this question over at the Microsoft Word forums, there's a good chance you'll get a better answer as well. This forum is primarily designed for the MacBook Air hardware and interoperability with OS X on a MacBook Air.

They don't go into the Trash. Unless you have a backup prior to the deletion time it's gone.

Stay forever and don't count towards your iCloud storage use.

  • Is an audio interface still necessary?

    I am using
Logic Pro X, Samson L2400 24 channel mixer connected via USB, is an audio interface still necessary to record all 24 tracks separately?
Noob hardly expresses my incompetence here so thank you for your patience.

I am very appreciative for the assistance however it confuses me slightly more in that I do have a Roland Octa-Capture however it also connects via USB. I guess it is also useless
Articles I read state USB can theoretically carry 255 channels but everything else points to L/R Stereo.
It appears a fire sale is in order and purchase of a firewire mixer or interface may be my only option
Thanks everyone hope I can find a solution
I don't quite get your conclusion: the fact that an interface connects via USB, does not make it useless. And according to a quick look at specs the octacapture aka UA1010 has 10 inputs; you could aggregate that with the Samson and another interface with at least 12 inputs, and there you have your 24 inputs: 10 from the UA1010, 2 from the Samson itself, and 12 from whatever extra interface you'd use.
Getting one interface with 24 or more inputs may be a more secure and simpler route to take though.
I also don't get why you almost blame our appreciated assistance - by "howevering" it - for confusing you about your 10-input audio interface, when you never even mentioned you had it in the first place?

  • Id and name, are they both necessary?

In creating an Anchor there is both the "id=" and "name=".  Are they both necessary, since it seems like the specified field would be the same in all (?) cases.  If both are required, is there a reason?  Thks.

Only the ID tag is neccessary, the name tag for anchor elements is not supported in HTML5

  • Are there still bugs in Elements 4

Are there still bugs in Elements 4?
Looking at the feature list I am tempted to buy Elements 4. But I have read many reviews that indicate that it is "bug ridden"- most reviews are dated just after release. Have Adobe fixed the bugs now?
    Advice very welcome...

Unfortunately you seem to be suffering from what has come to be known in PE4 terms as the "Goldilocks Syndrome". Do you remember when Goldilocks ate the porridge; one was too hot; one was too cold and one was just right. This went on with the beds etc. Well, it seems (from this very forum) that PE4 has a similar problem; if your computer is over specified (even with ALL the latest available drivers installed), it won't run properly; if it is under specified (even with ALL the latest available drivers installed), it also won't run properly, it has to be just right. There are people out there who's computers are just right, as we don't hear from them, obviously.
See if you can take your copy of PE4 back to the shop (they should have told you that a new one was coming out, well, if they were a good shop) and wait for PE7 which should have all the PE4 bugs worked out. They don't have to do much with the interface as it's already flawless. Very difficult to improve on the best. They just have to make sure it works on E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E's computer.
Have a look at Steve's PE7 introduction video's on the Adobe website. That's how a software should work.
    Best of luck.

  • Are Subclips still locked in CS3 as they are in 2.0?

Are Subclips still locked in CS3 as they are in 2.0? Meaning, can the subclips be lengthened without having to convert them to masterclips first?
    Steve

    Roger,
I do like your suggestion better then the one I have been using which is to: Edit Subclip/Convert to master clip. Because sometimes it takes up to 10 seconds to convert the subclip to a Master clip.
I programed a hot key in my "shuttle Pro" to "edit subclip" so I don't have to even touch the mouse.
    Thanks for the tip:)

That error may result from connecting to a cellular network via a phone or mobile broadband device. If that's what you're doing, try another network.
