Are Stickies in StickiesDatabase? I need to backup bad system in Disk Mode

My friend has a PowerBook G4 with a pretty corrupt OS 10.3 on it. I'm praying I'll be able to get it started in FireWire Target Disk Mode so I can backup files, then I'll re-install the OS.
Are the Stickies kept in ~/Library/StickiesDatabase ? If I just copy that file would that allow me to later restore if necessary?
(I'm a tech-y person so feel free to give me complicated instructions, I'll probably understand them)

Jason:
Have you tried repairing the installation on the PB? That is usually the least intrusive and safest option.
If you are able to boot into Firewire Target Disk Mode you can use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to make a compressed disk image of the entire Users Folder you can later restore. Then you can do an Archive and Install and still have everything intact.
And, yes, "Stickies kept in ~/Library/StickiesDatabase".

    Hi Jason,
You can find the Bookmarks in the following location.
    Home_Folder>Library>Safari Folder>Bookmarks.plist
You can put it on a USB stick or when it is still possible to sent the file in a folder to a e-mail address, for instance your e-mail. Later when everything is working well again you can sent it back to your friend an swap the Bookmarks.plist file with the one that is in the NEW installed system.
    Good luck ...

  • Love TM but need to backup files onto fat32 disk...?

    Hi,
I have loved using TM (so simple) but I need my backup disk to be readable on friends PC's = need fat32 disk. I guess TM just can't backup on fat32 disks.
Do you know of any TM like option to backup mac files onto fat32 disks (without creating a backup file you can only browse through your backup application)?
    Thanks
    Lionel

Most backup utilities will backup files to a FAT formatted drive although you cannot create a bootable backup on one. You might try one of the following:

If you have a .Mac account you can try Apple's Backup which comes free with the .Mac subscription. You download it from your iDisk.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
You may find it more convenient overall to use a separate drive specifically for use on both a PC and Mac, and use a different drive for your TM backup.

  • I need to update to OS X ..... but I need to backup my system first.  How do I know what exterior hard drive I need in order to do this?

How do I find out what size exterior hard drive I need to back up my system?

Click on the Apple icon on menu bar and select About this Mac.  Click on the Storage button.  Look at how much space your hard drive is currently consuming take that number and at least double it.  This would be your minimum space for your hard drive back up.  Or for a simpler answer, if your hard drive is 1TB in size, get a 2TB external hard drive for backups.

So this is a 2 part question:
    1) how to I backup the Photo Library to my new hard drive (as the last one was unrecoverable but previously backed up)
    2) how do I remove the Photo Library form my phone (preferably after backup in item 1)
    Thanks, Janis

Since it has always been very basic to backup your computer and all it's data, Apple provides no way for you to transfer music from your iPhone back to your computer.  As you know, you can re-download all iTunes purchases, but music that you ripped yourself you'll have to just re-rip again.
You can try and find 3rd party applications that might help you.  I'm sure you'll pay, however.
Let this be a very important lesson learned.
    Best.

  • I think my hard drive is broken and I need a backup - urgent!

Last night I updated my Mac's (Macbook Pro from January 2012) software for the first time in a few months. I had three updates, one of which was a security update from this month. Everything installed, though it took a bit longer than usual, then the computer rebooted. While rebooting, my screen froze with a spinning colour wheel and the pop-up from the update; the progress bar was about a quarter done and it said "writing files..." underneath. I quickly Googled on my phone if it was safe to force a shut down and read that it was. Then I went to bed thinking, "I'll start my computer in safe mode tomorrow morning and be sure to buy an external hard drive this week." (I know, I KNOW I am an idiot for not doing this sooner; my excuse is that I didn't have the money and I always forgot about it when I went out to run errands. I thought about just paying for extra Dropbox but I recently moved countries and don't have a credit card anymore. I've already been beating myself up over this for hours.) I have been looking up a LOT of things and have read so much that could be relevant to my situation, but there is always something that is slightly different so I thought I would explain my own situation in detail. (And sorry about the spelling mistakes, with my Mac shot I had to switch to a laptop I can't stand using.)
Well, I woke up the next day and started the Mac in safe mode. It took a long time, but a quick Google search showed that was normal too. I clicked around a bit, thought about opening Disk Utility, but didn't because the Apple article I was reading about safe mode didn't mention it. I opened Finder, clicked the Apple and hit and restart, and that is when the trouble began.
When trying to start normally, there was a progress bar under the grey apple. I had never seen it before for a normal start-up. Eventually the Mac just shut down. I tried starting it in safe mode again, it also shut down a fraction of the way into the progress bar.
Next I ran Disk Utility. When verifying my Macintosh HD, I got errors such as "incorrect number of threads when running" and something about an incorrect catalog. At the end of the verification, I got the prompt that Disk Utility needed to repair the files. I clicked Repair, it started to fix things, but eventually red errors still came up and got the message "Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
At this point I raced to the nearest electronics store, money be damned, and came home and attached my new hard drive to the Mac. It was recognized on the left side when I opened Disk Utility again. When I selected my hard drive and clicked "New Image" and selected the destination as my new hard drive, I very quickly got the error "Unable to create disk image using disk utility (error -61)".
After a brief mental breakdown I shut down the computer again and rebooted in single-user mode. I typed "fsck -fy", a few lines of text entered immediately, then I hit enter. It started searching until it ended with the error "The volume Macintosh HD could not be fully verified." Now I've turned the Mac off and don't plan on turning it back on until I have a solution.
One suggestion that I have read on all of these walk-throughs is to insert the installation disk that comes with your Mac. Well, I definitely never had one and now I can't get on my Mac to put OS X Recovery on a USB.
I am ordering DiskWarrior later today when I can borrow a credit card, it should get here in less than 48 hours according to the German company that sells it here. Will that be too late for my files? Is there anything else I can try for getting my data off my Mac? I tried to use Time Machine when I first got the Mac but for some reason didn't, either it was too complicated for me as a new user or there were monthly payments involved or something. In any case, when I tried to restore a backup using Time Machine, no options came up.
Is it possible this was caused by the software update or is it just a horrible coincidence? I have never had any problems with my Mac before so I just cannot believe these two things are unrelated.

In case anyone comes across this thread while having similar problems, here is how the rest of the situation played out:
Alsoft did not get in touch by the time I had my Apple store appointment. At the Genius Bar, the Genius who was helping me tried Target Disk Mode as well as a few other tests to determine if it was the cable attaching the hard drive or the hard drive itself that was broken. It turns out the hard drive was the problem and there was nothing that could be done to recover the files. I asked if I could keep the hard drive and, being under Apple Care, I could buy it for 157 euros (about $225), which I agreed to do before I left.
By the end of the day I had heard from Alsoft, who said it's usually possible to "rent" the hard drive from Apple with a deposit and then return it to them after a few days. It is then possible to attach the old hard drive to your fixed Mac, run DiskWarrior, and make a report that can determine the state of your files (I think - didn't get a lot of details). In any case, the guy that emailed me from Alsoft said it was probable that the files could be retrieved despite everyone at the Apple store trying not to let me get my hopes up.
In any case, it all turned out wonderfully in the end - I went to pick up my Macbook a week later and Apple had been able to transfer everything (except a few pieces of music) from the old hard drive onto the new one! I didn't have to pay to keep the old drive either. And of course, the first thing I did when I started using my Mac again was make a backup using Time Machine. (And since then I've realised that I'm actually running Lion instead of Mountain Lion, oops.)
So if you find yourself in a similar situation, be sure to contact Alsoft as it seems like there are still other ways to retrieve your files.

  • Hi, I am using my icloud on my iphone but am unable to find it on my mac book pro. It's not under my system preferences like it shows under the setup. Can I download it again? Or something. I just need to backup some files on my computer and am unable.

Hi, I am using my icloud on my iphone but am unable to find it on my mac book pro. It's not under my system preferences like it shows under the setup. Can I download it again? Or something. I just need to backup some files on my computer and am unable.

The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.5 (Mavericks preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is now non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mavericks, provided it meets the requirements.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Mavericks (10.9.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only.
The requirements for Mountain Lion and Mavericks are:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
      and the supported models are:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

  • I have to replace my hard drive as it is failing, I'm away and just bought a new external HD for backups,,only problem is it is fsiling to backup without a reason. Disk utility says ex HD is ok. I need to backup before i get it repaired. Any Advice?

Hi my hard drive is failing and I'm overseas in Thailand. I bought a Buffalo 1TB to back up my mac 13inch HD version 10.6.8, only problem is it wont back up. Disk Utility says ex HD is fine. I need to backup before I take it for repairs. What can I do? Thanks advice appreciated. NL

I think we both had our wires crossed a little.
Then just go ahead and clone your internal drive to your Buffalo. You are not going to use Time Machine, and you do not have to partition it. So ignore all that stuff I posted. Let me start from scratch.
First check that your Buffalo drive is partitioned GUID and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled. So open Disk Utility, select the topmost entry for the Buffalo drive. You should see something like this:
I have selected the entry of my CalDigit drive.  Note that the Partition Map Scheme is GUID. Now, select the volume (mine is "System Backup."
Here you see it is a Format type of Mac OS Extended, Journaled. If that's what you see then you are good to go.
    With Disk Utility still open:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the Buffalo drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • Do I need to backup my pics and email etc with iCloud backup or would it delete my data?

I have an ipad (3rd gen)  and an iPod (5th gen) I use the ipad for school as in my school instead of books and copies. I use my ipad for leisure and taking photos and videos and Facebook etc etc. both of the devices are using the same account. I only have the free 5GB backup package. I need the storage for my ipad school things as if I lose them..that's all my schoolwork..gone. I have recently taken a lot of photos with my iPod and downloaded a lot of games. Today a notification popped up saying that I'd almost run out of iCloud backup and that I could delete some of the backup on apps etc. so that's what I did and it barely made a dent in the backup figures. I then decided to delete most of my photos just so I'd have some more space for Facebook but it turns out that if you delete your photos, it doesn't actually result in a solution to the backup problem. So what I'm wondering is.. Do I really need to backup my pictures or email etc a and just leave the backup for my ipad? Also, when I go into Settings=>iCloud=>Storage & Backup=>Manage Storage=>this iPod at the bottom of the page there's a button that says "delete backup". I'm wondering if it would help my situation or something. Thanks in advance :)

You don't need to back up your photos to iCloud if you don't want to.  If you don't, be sure to import them (and your videos) to your computer so they are backed up there, as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.  You can then turn Camera Roll off under Backup Options.  This article explains other options for managing and reducing your iCloud storage: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4847.
If you tap Delete Backup in Manage Storage>your device, it will permanently delete the backup from iCloud.  It won't do anything to the data currently on your device, but it does put you at risk until you create a new backup.

  • What size external hard drive do i need to backup my macbook pro?

I know I need to backup my computer, especially since I have been experiencing some problems with it and will need to take it into a store to get looked at, but I do not know what size external hard drive I need to back my computer on.

Drives are so low in cost today, go for something that will meet your needs for a while...if you are going to use Time Machine, get a drive large enough that you can have a partition double the size of the internal drive for TM backups, and a partition you can use for more storage and work space.
A decent drive like the Mercury Elite Pro 2 TB drive OWC sells goes for less than $200 (US) now.  Has a fast interface and is easy to setup.

  • I need to transfer all photos to an external hard drive. Many photos have been moved around or deleted from computer hard drive, but still have a very full hard disk. Are the photos with questionmarks in Lightroom still taking up hard disk space? I'm so l

    Hi folks,
My hard disk is full. I already moved lots of photos from other folders on the hard disk to other external hard drives, so there are a lot of question marks in Lightroom. So, are those photos still taking up room on the computer hard disk? I want to move everything I have in Lightroom off of the computer to another external hard drive, in hopes that will free up space. I watched a tutorial, and read some things about it, but I need simple instructions please.

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • Do i need a backup system hdd

    Hi,
I have been thinking lately if i need a backup system for my raid setup. At the moment i have all my projects/media/exports on one 12tb raid 30 system, giving me 9tb or storage. and the raid setup can have upto 2x drive fail.
is there any point for me to invest in an external backup sytem that will backup all my raid sytem. if so what would you recomend.
    Baz

    Baz,
Just add two hot spares to the raid. Then you are safeguarded with even 4 disks failing at the same time.

  • Need to backup the file before processing in XI

    Hi all
I need to backup the incoming the file and then processing it in XI.(i.e)sender adapter picks the file and then backup that file and then send it onto IE.
I am aware that there is a option in sender file  CC "Run operating system Command Before Msg Proceessing".We have to set one batch file in it.
Could you please explain whats the exact commands for this case?

    Hi Rajesh,
    >>>>backup
For you information you can archive the file details of the modes are below
    Processing Mode as
    A) Archive
Files that have been successfully processed are moved to an archive directory.
    1) To add a time stamp to a file name, select the Add Time Stamp indicator.
The time stamp has the format yyyMMdd-hhMMss-SSS_. The time stamp ensures that the archived files are not overwritten and it enables you to sort them according to the time that they were received.
2)Under Archive Directory, enter the name of the archive directory.
If you want to archive the files on the FTP server, set the Archive Files on FTP Server indicator. If you do not set the indicator, the files are archived in the Adapter Engine file system.
    B)  Delete
    Successfully processed files are deleted.
    C)   Test
    Files are not processed.
Only use this mode to test the configurations of the file/FTP adapter or the Integration Engine/PCK. It is not suitable for productive operation.
    D)Set to Read-Only
Successfully processed files are given this attribute. Only writable files are processed. This selection is only available for the File System (NFS) transport protocol.
    >>>>>Run Operating System Command Before/After Message Processing
      Command Line
An operating system command specified here is executed before or after the message processing of a file that was found in a run. The default value is an empty character string (no command).
When the operating system command is called, the file name currently being processed can be specified with the following placeholders:
    1)       %f (file name)
    2)     %F(absolute file name including path)
    3)      Timeout (secs)
This specifies the maximum runtime of the executing program in seconds. When this time interval is exceeded, the adapter continues processing. The executing program continues to run in the background.
    4)    Terminate Program After Timeout
Set this indicator if the adapter is to terminate the executing program when the timeout is exceeded.
The adapter writes the output (STDOUT and STDERR) for the operating system command in the system trace.
Message processing is independent of any errors that occur during the execution of a configured operating system command.

  • In need of backup software

Hello there. Does anyone have a recommendation for good backup software? I need something that can syncronize some of my folders to an external hard drive. Thank.

My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
