  • Catalyst 2960 for my LAN WS-c2960-48TC-S vs WS-c2960-48TC-L

    Hello
I want buy a Catalyst 2960 but i don't now which is great for my situation.
Model : WS-c2960-48TC-S (LAN Lite - 400 euro) vs WS-c2960-48TC-L (LAN Base - 900 euro) the difference of price is half.
I need 3 VLAN (2 VLANs with data  and other VLAN (3th only voice). All security options want applied on ports.(MAC,ACCESS..etc)
Between switch and router will be a TRUNK channel...
The network design parts: lan printers  - 4, desktop - 16, phone IP - 10.
    I have only ISP .
So..what i need?      LAN Lite or LAN Base
Another question: In LAN Lite i have all commands?
    thank's

    Q. What are the advantages of Cisco Catalyst 2960 Series Switches with the LAN Base software relative to Cisco Catalyst 2960 Series Switches with the LAN Lite software?
    A. Cisco Catalyst 2960 LAN Base switches deliver intelligent services for branch offices and wiring closets. The LAN Base IOS software supports enhanced Layer 2+ security, quality of service (QoS), availability, and scalable management to enable new converged applications. Catalyst 2960 LAN Base switches include both 10/100 Fast Ethernet and 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity in 8-, 24-, and 48-port configurations.
Cisco Catalyst 2960 LAN Lite switches are for entry-level branch office and wiring closet networks. They simplify the migration from nonintelligent hubs and unmanaged switches to a fully scalable and reliable network. The LAN Lite IOS software supports standard Layer 2 security, QoS, and availability while lowering the network total cost of ownership. Catalyst 2960 LAN Lite switches deliver 10/100 Fast Ethernet connectivity in 24- and 48-port configurations.
All Cisco Catalyst 2960 Series Switches have technical support service options available through Cisco SMARTNet ® service. All come with a Limited Lifetime Hardware Warranty, and LAN Base and LAN Lite software updates are provided at no additional cost.

    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-2960-series-switches/prod_qas0900aecd80322c37.html
Will all commands be available? No...if they were then what would be the point of having different software levels? Will the switch meet all basic to intermediate needs? Yes. If you are looking for a set of specific commands to see if they are available then check out the command reference tools available from Cisco.

    what i ask about:
     catalist 2960 have 2960-S-series and simple 2960 (not S), and i hav'nt found WS-C2960 with S-suffix at http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/switches/catalyst-2960-series-switches/models-comparison.html
there is WS-* only without *S.

    I found the following info:
"WS-C2960S-24TS-L is Lan Lite Switch.but WS-C2960S-24TS-S is the Lan Base. The obvious differences is hardware differences. The LAN Base owns advanced Layer 2 and mainly is designed for large enterprise. However, The LAN Lite offers entry-level L2 features ,which aims at mid market deployments."

  • Catalyst 2960 switch

    Hi all,
I'm using switch Catalyst 2960. I use pc for console, I want to packet from a device to switch, I saw that Switch only receive bytes but not receive packets, I don't know why? I console switch, " show interfaces stats". Thank you very much.

Post the complete output to the command "sh interface <BLAH>".

  • Catalyst 2960 after upgrade

    hello,
I have a Catalyst 2960 series switch after upd blocked by the Web console,
I turned on the switch and connected the console cable but it does not reponds, LED Lighted system remains,
I feel that the update process was interrupted because that I was trying to update the others switchs at the same time, and all switch are cascaded,
    can you please help me?
    Regards,

If you've tried two or three different clients and you can't get anything (not even garbage characters) from console then there's a sure chance the appliance is toast.
Your remedial action would be to raise a TAC Case and get the appliance RMA-ed.

  • Password reset on a Cisco Catalyst 3550 series

We have a Cisco Catalyst 3550 series, and we don't have the password to gain access to the switch through a web browser. My question is if I reset the password using Hyper-terminal, does changing the password affect any vlan or fiber optic settings that I should know about. Or does resetting the password changes our switch to factory settings?

    Hi,
The password recovery procedure for your switch is described in this document:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/switches/catalyst-2950-series-switches/12040-pswdrec-2900xl.html
If you follow the instructions in the document exactly, you will retain the original configuration - you just rename the configuration file so that it is not loaded when the switch boots up. However, you will still be able to display it after the switch boots up using the more flash:config.old . Eventually, you can even load it into running-config using copy flash:config.old running-config command. At that point, the old passwords will be brought back but because you already are in the privileged EXEC mode, you can change them and save the updated configuration.
VLANs should not be affected as long as you do not delete the vlan.dat file located in FLASH. Fiber optic ports should not be affected as long as you are using original Cisco GBICs. If you're using 3rd party GBICs, it may be necessary to enter the service unsupported-transceiver hidden command in the global configuration mode before they get recognized.
    Good luck!
    Best regards,
    Peter

  • Cisco SG300-28 / SGE2000 / Catalyst 2960

    Hello everyone,
I'm looking for switch to accompany Cisco ASA 5520 in data center, with 20+ GE ports and no need for PoE.
I would like to understand the difference between Cisco SG300-28, Cisco SGE2000 and Cisco Catalyst 2960, 2960-C and 2960-S Series (except specific number of ports). As far as I can see the Cisco SGE2000 has 4x SFP and is stackable unlike the SG300 with 2x miniGBIC/SFP, but not much else. Cisco Catalyst 2960 series offers some additional features like USB storage, but I can't imagine I will need that.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you

  • Catalyst 2960 - IBM/Cisco IGESM - Trunk port configuration

    Good day all!
I am new in Cisco world and try to configure a trunk between a Catalyst 2960 switch and a IBM Blade Center IGESM switch (manifactured by Cisco).
Unfortunately, it seems that the network traffic doesn't cross the trunk link.
I have followed (at least, I think so) the instructions given on the different Cisco documentation papers but I can't find the mistake in my configuration (lack of experience :-( !).
Both switches are using IOS. 2960 uses IOS 12.2(25)FX and IGESM uses IOS 12.2(22)EA8.
The ports are connected through a cross-over cable Cat5e.
Please find below the configuration for each ports:

For my test, I try to ping a blade (connected to IGESM) in VLAN 200 from a workstation connected to Catalyst 2960 (in VLAN 200 too). From a network anaylser (ethereal), I can see the ARP broadcast from each side but none are going across the trunk link.
I am a bit lost about this problem and would be grateful for any assistance in solving it!
Many, many thanks in advance for your time!
    Best regards,
    Fabian

    Hi Glen!
Both switches (Catalyst 2960 & IGESM) are brand new and most ports are still reflecting manufacturer's default configuration. Vlan 2 is the default native vlan for IGESM ports (excluding ports used for switch management which use vlan 1 as most Cisco switches).
I changed the native vlan for g0/5 on IGESM to 200. Now, ports g0/5 (access mode) and g0/20 (trunk mode) are on native vlan 200. On g0/5 is installed Windows 2003 instance (firewall disabled). The only purpose is to receive and send ping request to test connectivity.
My workstation is connected to 2960 switch on port fa0/1 (please find the configuration below). I can successfully ping other vlan 200 machines connected on the same switch. For testing purpose, I try to ping the blade machine connected on port g0/5 on IGESM.
    Configuration of fa0/1:
    Name: Fa0/1
    Switchport: Enabled
    Administrative Mode: dynamic auto
    Operational Mode: static access
    Administrative Trunking Encapsulation: dot1q
    Operational Trunking Encapsulation: native
    Negotiation of Trunking: On
Access Mode VLAN: 200 (Workstation VLAN)
Trunking Native Mode VLAN: 200 (Workstation VLAN)
    Administrative Native VLAN tagging: enabled
    Voice VLAN: none
    Administrative private-vlan host-association: none
    Administrative private-vlan mapping: none
Administrative private-vlan trunk native VLAN: none
Administrative private-vlan trunk Native VLAN tagging: enabled
    Administrative private-vlan trunk encapsulation: dot1q
Administrative private-vlan trunk normal VLANs: none
Administrative private-vlan trunk private VLANs: none
    Operational private-vlan: none
    Trunking VLANs Enabled: ALL
    Pruning VLANs Enabled: 2-1001
    Capture Mode Disabled
    Capture VLANs Allowed: ALL
    Protected: false
    Unknown unicast blocked: disabled
    Unknown multicast blocked: disabled
    Appliance trust: none
Is there any other information I could provide to better help you to understand the configuration?
    Cheers!

  • Catalyst 2960S switch stack support?

    Broken Arrow, OK

I also have a 2960S stack in my office. I checked my handy OnPlus iPhone App and it shows backup, restore, and firmware all equal 1 which I recall correctly means backup is supported. I'll double check when I get into the office to ensure backups are actually working.

  • IOS 15.x/Memory in Catalyst 2960 Switches series

    Hi Guys,
I am just planning to upgrade the IOS on our 2960 Series switches with currently we have 12.x but planning to 15.x.
I have tested on our test environment and found one issue that related to memory utilization as on 12.x IOS they are using very little memory but when tested on 15.x they are using a lots of memory and little free available.
    I have few questions.
    1. Why this new IOS 15.x utilizing huge memory? and little memory available.
    2. What will be happen if the switch is running fully loaded (i.e. Processor 80-90% utilization) then i think the available memory will also be fully utilized?
    3. Can we upgrade the memory module in the switch as i don't see any memory module in 2960 so where are the memory module in switches as these memory built-in in the Processor?
    Regards,
    Saeed

15.0.2-SE6 has the gold star\black outline which means it's "Cisco Suggested",  however I've yet to ever find anything that describes why its Suggested.
It would be really beneficial if more people commented on releases inside of the download section.

  • NAC modes supported by the Catalyst 2960

Hello, we want to be able to use NAC with agentless hosts. From my reading the NAC-L2-IP and NAC-L3-IP modes are the only modes that support NAH's.
Are these two modes supported by The Catalyst 2960 switch?

  • How to remove the WiSM2 from the Catalyst 6500 series switch?

Hello, can you explain to me how to safely remove the WiSM2 from the Catalyst 6500 series switch?
According to the documentation "Catalyst 6500 Series Wireless Services Module 2 Installation and Verification Note":
To remove the WiSM2, perform these steps:
Step1     Shut down the module by one of these methods:
In privileged mode from the router prompt, enter the hw-mod module mod shutdown command. NoteIf you enter this command to shut down the module, you must enter the following commands in global configuration mode to restart (power down, and then power up) the module:
Router# no power enable module modRouter# power enable module mod
If the module does not respond to any commands, press the SHUTDOWN button located on the front panel of the module.
Step2     Verify that the WiSM2 shuts down. Do not remove the module from the switch until the POWER LEDis off.
But, in the case of Step1 (1st methods) I do not see a option "shutdown"  in the command "hw-mod module 3"...
All I prompted to enter is:
    c6500#hw-module module 3 ?
boot           Specify boot options for the module through Power Management Bus control register
    reset          Reset specified component
simulate  Simulate options for the module
Is it hidden options? IOS version of c6500 is 12.2(33)SXJ1
In the case of Step2 (2nd methods) there is not any button on the front panel of the module?
And yet, it is better to remove the module configuration manually or use the command module clear-config prior to removing the module?

    Good catch.
Which one is true, will get back to you on this if i've something soon.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/module/wism2/installation/note/WiSM_2.html#wp34727
The above link is procedure to remove wism2. This procedure doesn’t look like wism2 is hot swapable.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/module/wism2/installation/note/WiSM_2.html#wp34621
All modules, including the supervisor engine (if you have redundant supervisor engines), support hot swapping. You can add, replace, or remove modules without interrupting the system power or causing other software or interfaces to shut down. For more information about hot-swapping modules, see the Catalyst 6500 Series Switch Module Installation Guide.
