Are tabs saved during an update?

I've had tabs/browsing sessions lost during previous updates. When new updates come along I look thru FAQ etc to see if they'll be preserved. I never find anything about that, so I never update. Well, that's not true. FF invariably crashes and trashes the session. That's when I know I can update without avoidably losing anything more. Now I'm bothering to ask if my tabs will be saved. Improved restoration is available. Yay!
Let me also ask: (I know this is too much for one submission but I've had these questions too)
- That this be put in the FAQ.
- How to restore a session? I've found and followed the instructions to get and install a session.something file but it didn't work.
- If I do that, will they add to my present tabs or will they replace them. I'd like to be able to add them in. I've found several session files.
- Managing tabs has so many tabs there. But it has them by when I last loaded the page. It'd be wonderful if the last session was available to restore since restore session fails often enough.
- Can we use our email as a login? I've asked questions before but don't remember the logins. FF doesn't remember as it's crashed and burned a few times.
- Can we get emails when our questions get a response. Forums may be a natural thing to developers. I'd love to be able to code, and forum use may become natural to me then. But now I don't use anyone's forums regularly for anything, or even often enough to be called occasionally. So I can easily miss a response.
Maybe this has been changed since it's been ages since I last asked for help.
Thank you

Hello,
Unless you are running in [[Private Browsing - Browse the web without saving information about the sites you visit|Private Browsing mode]], your session is always saved - including after you update. If you have '''about:home''' (or "Firefox start page") set as your home page, the bottom right button "Restore previous session" will open all your tabs and windows from your last session (minus the session cookies if you chose to delete them every time Firefox is closed). If you have a different home page set, you can always load your previous session by going to:
* History (or [[Image: New Fx Menu]] > History) > Restore Previous Session
* [[Private Browsing - Browse the web without saving information about the sites you visit]]
Firefox 33 has several security fixes since version 30, so you should definitely update immediately. If you are worried about your tabs, I believe version 30 already includes the feature where you can right click on your tab bar and "Bookmark All Tabs" to a folder. If you find that your previous session isn't being saved and you are not running in Private Browsing mode, then when you restart Firefox, you can navigate to that folder in your bookmarks menu and "Open All in Tabs". Please post back if you are not running in Private Browsing and find that Firefox is not remembering sessions - we can help figure out what is going on and help you fix that.
I am assuming you are asking about the login for the forums - you can sign in using your username, and if you are having trouble remembering usernames just use the local part of your email address (the "aaa" part of "[email protected]"), assuming it is not already taken. The sign-in page also gives you the option to email your username if you have forgotten it, as well as steps to reset your password.
Whenever you receive a response in the forums, it will email you, so you do not need to provide your email address in your post as it will only attract spam.

• Changes to selected columns to display in Details tab in Task Manager are not saved during a reboot

I use Task Manager on Server 2008 R2 to monitor performance. I have added several columns to the Processes tab using View..Select Columns. I have added CPU time, I/O read/write/other bytes, etc.
The equivalent in Server 2012 is the Details tab. I figured out how to add these same columns - right click on the column headers, and choose "Select columns". This is not obvious by the way.
However these selections are not persistent across a reboot. So every time I reboot, I need to add the columns back to the display. That is not the case with Server 2008 R2 - they are persistent.
I am using a domain administrator userid, but not using roaming profiles.
This is a retrogression vs. Server 2008 R2. Can it be fixed?

Hi,
I meant that both the added columns of Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Serve r2012 RC are persistent.
You may install a new Windows Serve r2012 RC to check the symptom.
Currently, you may perform a System File Checker (SFC /Scannow) to check the result.

• What are possible issues during BIOS update?

Hello everybody,
I am having a problem with the battery of my old Toshiba - 'plugged in, not charging'
Searching the internet I found out that the BIOS update could possibly solve the problem.
On the other hand the BIOS update procedure can itself cause some sever problems....
Does anybody know what precautions can/should I take to avoid such problems or be prepared to resolve them easily... something like BIOS recovery disk, etc?
Many thanks in advance
IG

Hello
In worst case the update could fail and destroy the ROM module. That means the computer will not boot anymore the ROM module must be reflashed from a notebook technician. Thats fact!
But if you have any problems with battery charging control I must agree MisterX because I doubt it has something to do with BIOS. I mean even with oldest BIOS version, the battery will be charged if AC adapter is connected because its hardware controlled and has nothing to do with BIOS.
In my opinion you should try another battery and/or AC adapter. Important point is that a battery can be recharged only 500 times after then you must replace it.
Check this!!!

3. Are tab groups saved during back-ups?
Running Win 7 Pro, browsing Firefox 7.0.1

App (pinned) tabs and Tab Groups (Panorama) are stored as part of the session data in the file sessionstore.js in the Firefox profile folder.
Make sure that you do not use "Clear Recent History" to clear the "Browsing History" when Firefox is closed because that prevails and prevents Firefox from opening tabs from the previous session.
* https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Clear+Recent+History
If you use cleanup software like CCleaner then make sure that Session is unchecked in the settings for the Firefox application.

• My pinned tabs are not saved in Firefox 9

I updated firefox yesterday to 9.01 and now my pinned tabs are not saved when I reopen firefox. I had hoped the days of having umpteen problems on each update were gone now there is a little one every couple of weeks but no, it's still a pain.

Well that was odd, decided to check addons and started firefox in safe mode and my pinned tabs were there so restarted it to disable addons one by one but before I could do anything my pinned tabs were back in place. Lets hope it lasts.

Hi,
I am getting a pop-up message(Edits will not be saved. Any Edits made to the enterprise global template items are only available during this session.Make edits in checked-out enterprise global template to make them
available for all users of this project server) when trying to insert a new column in the Gannt Chart View.
Due to this what all are the columns that inserted in the project plan, will be lost when open the project in the next time.
I have opened the Enterprise Global Template and cross checked for Gaant Chart view it is showing the table as "Entry" only.
The requirement is what all columns are required for the project plan, manager will insert in the project first time. Next time on-wards it needs to be display the columns when opened the project from server by default.
We are unable to reproduce this issue in our Dev Envt.
Could anyone of you please help me.
Thanks in Advance!
Regards,
Venkat

Hi Venkat,
I suggest to remove Gantt Chart view and Entry table from Eglobal. These are default views from client and it is highly recommended to not use them in Enterprise Global.
Whatever a user ist doing on a view or table which is included in Enterprise Global will be reset on next open - therefore you receive this message.
If you need some server wide defined views and tables, create them. But remove Gantt Chart and Entry.
Does that help?

• HT4489 Ever since the last update IOS5.1.1, calendar entries are not saved on Icloud, and would not sync on all I clould devices

After the last update of IOS5.1.1, all caledar entries are not saved on Icloud and thus not synced on all my Icloud devices, even though, spreadsheets are synced, photostream is working and contacts is syncing, only calendar items.  Anybody has the same problem? Or a solution to this kind or problem?

Welcome to the Apple Community.
First check that all your settings are correct, that calendar syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the calendars you are using are in your 'iCloud' account and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud account (you can do this by clicking/tapping the calendar button in the top left corner of the application ), non iCloud calendars will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your calendars are in the iCloud account, you might try unchecking calendar syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling calendar syncing settings.

• Are data in third party applications saved during back up?

I'd like to upgrade to 2.0.1 but I have quite a few applications purchased from AppStore that contain crucial data. So the question is whether the information within the apps is saved during the back up or will update wipe out all the info forcing me to manually enter the data again?
Thanks

Yes, everything from SMS, contacts, settings, photos and applications and app data will be saved. The onlly thing not backed up is music but that also will be retained during the upgrade. Just make sure you have the same music already on your computer in case a problem does oocur.

i updated my ipod and my computer crashed during the update now the apps that come with the ipod such as the app store and itunes are not on my ipod how do i fix this

Connect your iPod to any computer with iTunes installed, highlight your device and try syncing the apps only. If it doesn't work might have to restore through iTunes. With the new iTunes and iCloud beta, you can have the iTunes list what apps are missing on your device but if you had previously purchased in the past and then have iTunes install them. You should always get in the habit of backing up your iPhone whenever you do any firmware/OS updating/upgrading or transferring over to new device. I really really really really hope you can get back at least some of your old info. I will tell you this, I have been kicking myself in the butt for not routinely backing up my iPhone when my beautiful special iPhone 4 came up missing and had to revert back to my 3GS. iPhone 5 will be released in a few months so I am holding off on purchasing a new iPhone til then, not that I did so without reservation and a little bit of iPhone 4 withdraw.

• IPhone 4 crashed during app update, apps are blank

I had 24 app updates in the app store, tried to update through the phone. It crashed during the update, and now all the to-be-updated apps are showing up with a white generic logo and 'waiting...' message, updates do not go through. The app store still shows 24 updates, but when I go into that page it just spins. I have rebooted twice. I will not be close to my phone backup until tomorrow. Any ideas are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Try to force your phone into recovery mode. Disconnect it from the computer's USB cord. Turn it off if you can by holding the sleep/wake switch until you see the red slide to off. If you can't turn it off, please continue. Press and hold the home button while plugging it into the computer's USB cord. Continue holding the Home button while iPhone starts up. While starting up, you will see the Apple logo. When you see "Connect to iTunes" on the screen, you can release the Home button and iTunes will display the recovery mode message. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 for details.
Then you can restore your phone: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414

• Wi-Finetworks are not saved as Known Networks

Hello everybody!
I recently updated my iPhone to 1.1.3 software and I have noticed that the networks I have joined before are not saved anymore, which is very annoying because I have to enter the password every time I want to join to any "known" network.
The "Ask to Join Networks" option is turned on on my iPhone, but it appears to be failing or something, I join to my home wireless network every day and I would like to not enter the password every time.
Before updating to the new software (1.1.3) my iPhone joined automatically to the saved networks, but I don't know what is happening now.
I have not changed any setting on my router, that's why I think the problem is in the 1.1.3 new software.
Any idea?
Thanks in advance!

Posted below are possible troubleshooting steps that may assist with this issue
1. Reboot iPhone - Hold down the home button & lock button together till you see the silver apple logo. Now let go. And iPhone OS will reboot. Now test your WiFi again.
2. Reset Network Settings - Go to Settings-General-Reset-Reset Network Settings-Confirm. This of course wipes out all knowledge of any WiFi networks you were connected to including password. Please be advised VPN settings may also be reset and need to be set back up. Now test WiFi
3. If you have bluetooth on. Turn it off. Test WiFi again. If needed go to WiFi settings on iPhone. If your connected to a network tap on the blue circle and up on top tap on Forget network. Go back to WiFi settings and reconnect to that network.
4. Turn WiFi off then back on and test again
5. Toggle Airplane mode on for 1 min then off. Settings-Airplane Mode - ON 1 min then OFF. Now retest WiFi
6. Allow iPhone Batter to completely die out. Then do a full charge on it. Hopefully it dumps any temp memory during the discharge and draining of the electronics inside. Now test WiFi once fully charged
7. Restore iPhone. -This will erase all data and settings. So please only do this if everything you want back is on the PC/Mac. Make sure once you restore you set it up as new iPhone. If you choose restore from backup there is a small chance it could bring back a corruption that was may of been causing the issue
8. if you still have an issue. Power cycle your network equipment. Power down the Modem and Router for 5 min. Modem gets powered on first. Wait till all the lights are on. Then power router, Wait now test WiFi. (Please consult your ISP or Router Manufacture for assistance with power cycling your equipment.)
And one question. Does this occur on all WiFi networks? If so what security are you using? WEP? WPA? and What channel is the router broadcasting in?
Post back if needed

• I have an original Ipad, I tired to update it, but during the update it gave me an error message (1602) an now it just has a picture of itunes and a ubs cord?  Please help!!

I have an original Ipad, I tired to update it, but during the update it gave me an error message (1602) an now it just has a picture of itunes and a ubs cord?  Please help!!

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

Launched software update on MacBook v. 10.5.8 during restart, update stalled now nothing will launch-quits unexpectedly. Help!

As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 onwards:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
Some general advice on updating Leopard:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).
