Are the new MacBook's 2.0 GHz faster than PowerPC G4 1.33GHz?

I have a 15" PowerPC G4 1.33 GHz, and looking to upgrade to Intel, but was wondering if it's worth it. Are the new MacBook Intel Mac's that much faster and better than the PowerPC 1.33 GHz G4's?
Thanks
-Dean

To elaborate on what JoeyR said,
Yes, the new Intel machines will feel a fair amount faster both because of the architecture (a core solo was a little slower than a G5), and the fact that it is dual core.
The caveat is: You have to ask yourself which programs you use a lot, and whether they are Universal Binary (able to be run on both PPC and Intel processors). PPC only programs will be run under Rosetta which emulates the PPC environment. Obviously this may make some programs feel sluggish, especially when you start the programs.
But, I love my Macbook.
Best,

As Tom said the FCS forum is the better place to post the question.
Here is Apple's best practices doc for installing both on the same system.
BTW, FCP7 is part of the FCS 3 suite of apps.

  • When are the new MacBooks coming out?

    Hello all,
I know that this might be a strange question, but I have not been able to find the information any place that I have looked. does anybody know when the new Macbooks are coming out? Are they going to get ride of the Macbook line? Just a few questions that I have been wondering. If anybody has a link to an article that would be great. Again thanks for the information on the subject matter.

    No problem.

  • Are the newer Macbook's Better?

Ok, so it's obvious that the older Macbooks had problems with the shut down thing. Are the new ones better? Also, are there other problems I need to worry about? I'm thinking about getting one.

I have been considering buying a Macbook Pro/Macbook for several months now. I have done extensive reading on this site and several trusted mac sites. In addition I've visited Apple stores several times at bi-weekly/monthly intervals to talk to sales people and look at the laptops myself.
The majority (if not all) major issues have been fixed. Getting a new machine really shouldnt be a problem. The internet and this support forum in particular really make the extensiveness of the problems seem worse than they are.
I say go for it. I ordered mine last week.

  • Any perfect audio hardware setup with the new Macbook Pro?

I'm still not sure if to go for the new Macbook Pro 2.8 ghz, or the 6 months earlier 2.5 ghz model (march 2008).
I love to go for the new Macbook Pro, but I'm not sure about my setup. Now I have:
    - extern 7200 rpm bus powered LaCie firewire 800 hard drive
    - Saffire with firewire 400 (thinking about moving to Apogee Duet)
Will the express card really help? I've read that if you connect a firewire 400 device to the express card, the firewire 800 won't work at 800 speed, but at 400? Also that a bus powered hard drive doesn't work, and that it needs it's own power to run with the express card?
    Bottom line:
What would be the perfect audio hardware setup with the new Macbook Pro? I gladly invest in a different audio interface (or anything else) if it really fits and works as pro audio setup!

I've read that if you connect a firewire 400 device to the express card, the firewire 800 won't work at 800 speed, but at 400?
I don't think this is right. As I understand it, the advantage of having one of your devices on an express card slot is specifically so it is on its own bus.
Then both devices will operate on their own speed.
However, this is true for the older model Macbook Pros when you use both FW ports that are built in, because even though the machine has two ports, they each feed one firewire bus. So if you have a device plugged into each port, the one plugged into the 800 will only run at 400 speed because they're both on the same bus. Using an express card means both devices can operate at their own speed.
If you want the newer machine I think you should get it. Then you can buy a firewire 400 express card, plug your interface into that, and plug your FW 800 drive into the main firewire port. This will give you better performance from your peripherals than an older machine with both devices plugged into the built in FW ports.
    Good Luck!

  • Why is it that the new macbook pro processor upgrade option only offers up to 2.8 Ghz with Intel Dual Core i7, when back in Sep 12 I bought a 2.9 Ghz Intel Dual Core i7 Macbook, is the new one tuned to go much faster anyway?

Why is it that the new Macbook Pro processor upgrade option only offers up to 2.8 Ghz boosting to 3.3 Ghz with Intel Dual Core i7, when back in Sep 12 I bought a 2.9 Ghz boosting to 3.6 Ghz Intel Dual Core i7 Macbook, is the new one tuned somehow to go much faster anyway, or will the new one be slower in fact?  Or does the solid state drive compensate for the lack of increased processor capacity?

The CPU's come from different Intel 'families'.  The older ones are 'Ivy Bridge' and the newer ones are 'Haswell'.  Numbers alone will not determine the efficiency of  CPU.
    Ciao.

All has been installed. Those are there in case you need to do a reinstall. Unlike most Windows based hardware vendors these days. Apple still ships software you might need in case a drive fails. Even in the case of the new MacBook Air, Apple ships the software on a flash drive.

Not even close - 3.06GHz is a dual core - 1066MHz system bus.
    2.7GHz = Quad Core - 1600MHz system bus.
Which do you think is faster?

  • What cases are good for the new macbook pro retina display 15"

What folio cases are out there that don't damage the new macbook pro retina display 15" I keep looking but can't find any, they all seem to have serious negative reviews

be specific,  hard case or CARRY CASE?
hard cases are not recommended, trap in dust and junk and trap heat
A great carry case, and best made for the money are those made by INCASE as seen in Apple stores and amazon.com

  • Are the referbished macbook pro brand new?

Are the referbished macbook pro brand new?

They are used but thoroughly checked by Apple to make sure they are in 100% working order before sale.
Lots of them are actually un-used but certain rules say Apple have to sell them as refurbished.
Many of them are returns, meaning they have been used for less than 14 days (to be eligible to return a purchased Apple product, you have to have purchased it less than 14 days ago).

I got a new Macbook pro in March and transferred all of my old files into the new macbook from my old one. But ever since then, my iPhoto just does not open up. It says 'error' every time I try to open it, but I am still able to attach the iPhotos saved to emails. Help! How do I get my iPhoto back?

    Thanks, Sig.
The old computer is a 2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
The new one is a 2.3 GHz intel core i7
In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem.  Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page.  Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.)

  • Can I get the new MacBook with a 1 tb Hard Drive?

Well very good looking the new (GOLD) MacBook announced on Monday 9 March 2015.  But with just one USB-C port this means having a number of adapters with me at all times ---
But the big concern is whether I can get at least 1 tb of storage space.  I have a 5 year old MB Pro with a 500 gb SSD and I removed the Optical Drive to install a 500 gb HD.  Now 5 years later…  Am I going to be limited to 8 gb of memory and 500 gb of storage space?  Not a lot of progress there!
I know I can move to the 13" MacBook Pro and get more connection possibilities plus 16 gb of RAM and a 1 TB drive - but I would like to purchase the latest technology (especially since I keep my Macs a long time! - My 1989 SE is still running OS 6.0.4…  --- OK I'm not planning on 26 year lifespans but hey, 5 years, yes, please!)
Any comments appreciated.  I see where they say one can move to 1.3 gHz (turbo to 2.9) - but I don't see where to select that on the Apple Store -- and I see nothing about where to select 16 gb of RAM  nor a 1 tb SSD.
Thanks for any comments or opinions or web links!

Wow this is a great reply!  I did not mean to imply that I would consider or even imagine that a 5200 rpm Hard Drive or anything like that would work with the new MacBook – but what I had NOT considered was that a standard SSD like I have in my MBP-13" (2010 mode)l would also NOT FIT in this almost iPad thin new MacBook!  Of course you are 100% right - it is going to be a real special flash drive -- and yet I am surprised that a 1 tb is not at least offered - even if for $400 or so more--- and I think this is so they have some way to differentiate the MacBook (new) with the MB Air and the MB Pro.
Certainly tempting!  I will wait to see what Belkin and others offer as to docks - and also to see if Apple doesn't offer a 1 tb option within a year.
    Thanks for your fine reply!!!!!!

  • Gaming potential on the new MacBook 13inch

This is what specifications are on the new MacBook 13inch.
    Graphics and Video Support
Intel GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory1
This is what is on my iMac
ATI Radeon X1600 graphics with 128MB GDDR3 memory
Can someone explain the difference and advise on whether the MacBook would be as good for playing games?

Hi, I've read on other forums that at some point in the near future mac software developers who produce 3D heavy games, will exclude the macbook and mac-mini from they're minimum requirements list on the packaging, as they both utilize on-board integrated graphics!
I'm running HALO on my base model Macbook (white,1.83 ghz,combo,60GB hd,512mb) I've had to turn off all effects,shading,details,flaring,etc..., and run it in a window, and at 640*480 resolution. So far I can report reasonably good gameplay online, although it depends on the number of other players and the ping rate, but its certainly playable/enjoyable (even to the point of winning a few CTF and SLAYER sessions). I wouldn't attempt hosting a server but I'm happy with the performance considering its not really a laptop designed around 3D gaming.
    Hope this helps
