Ccleaner on Windows has a few functions:
1: Repairs the Registry
2: Cleans the caches
3: Secure Erases free space on the drive / deleted files.
OnyX for OS X.
1: OS X doesn't have a Registry to bork, but other things like Preference files, caches etc, can.
2: OnyX can clean the caches and check for corrupted Preference files, rebuilt ds_store files and other things, basically clean out all the automated stuff designed to make the computer faster so it can rebuild it in case it gets borked or may contain content you rather wish it didn't.
3: OnyX can Erase whats in the Trash, but not wipe free space on the drive, Apple's provided Disk Utility has a feature to to that.
So if your looking for something to clean your Internet tracks on OS X, first use the browser cleaning aspects, then OnyX cleaning, then a reboot to clear the OS X DNS cache then a Disk Utility > Wipe Free Space.
These features are not automated or intertwined with Firefox add-ons like Click2Clean is with CCleaner on Windows. You'll have to perform it manually.

Another option for totally cleaning one's system faster on OS X would be to use the free VirtualBox to run a free distro ISO of Linux (Ubuntu, Mint, MacBuntu etc) in OS X. Then once the distro is setup in the virtual machine, save a snapshot of this OS state to revert back to after browsing potentially malicious sites in Firefox (in Linux)
Reverting on takes only a few seconds, instead of the painfully long time OnyX can take, and ensures everything is included for removal, of course a DU free space wipe would be necessary for completeness.

You will fnd that most scanners from the name brands work...I have an Epson Photo scan that works just fine with Mac OS X 10.7.5, 10.8.5, and 10.9.2...but I always use the included Image Capture application, found in Finder > Applications.

I have posted this annoying Robles to bugreport.apple.com. Hope I can get locution (although Apple normally will not respond):
On a software name Appfresh, it alerted me to update my MBPr 15 inches running latest OSX 10.8.2, with Chinese Word List Update 1.2. When I clicked on Software Pdate, app Store return No update available.
My system have Chinese Word List Update 1.0 installed, and on October 5, 2012, Chinese Word List Update 1.1 was released by Apple, as alerted through AppFresh. However, this update never get updated on m system. I have to manually download chinesewordlistupdate.pkg from reviews.cnet.com/macfixit and install it manually. By doing so, I have Chinese Word List Update 1.1 on my system.
The same problem occurred again today on November 5, 2012, where Chinese Word List Update is released by Apple. again, it fail to update from Software Update menu.
    Can you please:
    1. Explain why this problem occurred. This is so annoying.
    2. Advise me how can I get this Chinese Word List Date to update to version 1.2. Can you please send me the chinesewordlistupdate.pkg for version 1,2 so that I can manually install it on my system?
    3. How can I prevent similar problem with he subsequent version?
Why Apple don't make this update standard as other update?
Support please. Thank for response in advance

A common misconception of unknown origin. The intake and the exhaust for the cooling fan on the 13" MB and MBP are both located on the rear slot at the base of the hinge. In fact, you can actually see the divider that separates the intake flow from the output flow. If it were through the keyboard crevices, then an awful lot of overheats would result from people using impermeable keyboard covers, as well as Apple's warranty department would be flipping out over the Apple store carrying such covers. iSkin ProTouch FX Keyboard Cover for all MacBooks - Black Printed Keys on White - Apple Store (U.S.)

once again, I've tried a few of these keyboard covers. the Moshi keyboard cover is the ONLY one I can recommend. the others are too thick or change the keyboard experience too much.

Re: Is it safe to use MBP with screen lid closed? Leave charge on always?
    1. Closing the cover will cause more heat. This is not because of covering the keyboard very much (though it does help some heat be retained). It's mainly because of the shape of the hinge and the fact when closed it covers up the back vent a lot more. For the best cooling, it is best to have the screen open. Just run it as a dual monitor, but make the external the Primary monitor, and if you don't want to use the built in, just turn its backlight off and don't use it.
    2. The thing you plug into the wall is not a battery charger. The actual "charger" is built into the computer. It knows when to charge and when not to. If the little light on the power plug is amber, then its charging your battery. When its green, its just powering the laptop and NOT charging your battery at all.

Re: Is it safe to use MBP with screen lid closed? Leave charge on always?
I'd leave the lid open, at least partially...yes it may be fine not doing that, but you are making heat dissipate worse, of course could even theoretically hurt the screen.
As for the battery...well there's really only two choices, have it plugged in or not. As others mentioned, you can't overcharge the battery. It can be damaged a bit from heat, but of course the number one thing that's going to damage it is discharging it...so it's a no brainer-use it plugged in whenever possible, and try to charge it whenever possible when it's not plugged in.

Nope. Apple would disagree with you on that one. Any "closure", which is, when compared to the amount of CFM, is insignificant. In fact, the opening size remains the same. it is only deflected at a slight angle when the lid is closed. Tilt your MBP and see. As well, shutting down the display lowers the heat being generated, even in the lower case. As I said, if it were a problem, Apple would not be selling stands designed to operate your unit in the closed position as the original poster of this thread proposes to do.

  • Are There Any Applications Like "Paint" on Windows?

I'm a new Mac user and can't get used to the MacOSX layout.I installed an application from the downloads section last night for an application called paintbrush, because i need a basic Paint application to crop pictures etc.
But it's useless. Are there any other applications that anyone can recommend that will do basic paint style duties??

If all you want to do is crop pictures; do minor color, contrast, color temperature, & similar photo-oriented tasks, try iPhoto, which is already installed on your MacBook. You can also do more than you might think with Preview, another application included with every MacBook. Many of the features are not immediately obvious, so it is a good idea to browse through the help topics for each app to get an idea of what they can do.
If you are willing to spend some cash on a more capable application, I recommend Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac, about $80 from Amazon.com & other outlets. This app is getting great reviews for its capabilities & ease of use, & got a "Best of Show" award at MacWorld 2008. I bought it recently & love it (unlike the old 2.0 version it replaced, which was fairly capable but burdened with such a lousy user interface that I rarely used it).

  • Are there any apps that make it now possible to scroll with Mountain Lion ?

I just gave up on a project that required me to be able to scroll through a Senate bill. I'll probably go back, but it just shouldn't be so difficult, so painful. and I'm not talking about the bill's language. No, it's just Apple's decision to do away with the USEABLE search arrows that existed before Mountain Lion, and, yes, I know that you can use the little up and down triangles--sometimes--for this purpose.  I have written to Apple about this on more than one occasion, but I never felt that this would do any good. Anyway, I came here to see if anyone knows of an app that has been developed to overcome this strange, almost malicious, behavior of Apple's. Are there any apps I can use on my iMac for scrolling? If not why not? I know I have a lot of company in my disgust with Apple's behavior, so I have to there is some prohibitively difficult problem that makes such a fix impossible. Is that the reason why no one has come to the rescue of Apple's suffering customers?

For very long documents in PDF or on a web page, I just lean on the space bar for big jumps (Shift-spacebar goes up), or on the down arrow keys for short scrolling. If I'm on my laptop, the trackpad provides both large jumps and fine control. If I'm on my desktop, I love my scroll wheel mouse.
In apps like Word, you can't scroll with the spacebar because you need it to type spaces, so I just use the Page Up/Page Down keys. On short Mac keyboards you press Fn+Up Arrow or Fn+Down Arrow to page up/down.
There are so many more and better ways to scroll now compared to the 1980s when the only way was to click-click-click over and over again on stupid scroll arrows. If it stopped scrolling it meant you had to re-aim the mouse because the mouse slipped a little and the arrow is no longer hitting the arrow. If you wanted to scroll up, you had to move the mouse quite a ways because the arrows were on opposite ends of the bar. Scroll arrows were the worst and least efficient way to scroll and I don't miss them at all.
I'm glad we have so many superior alternatives now where, unlike scroll arrows, you don't even have to look at the screen to scroll quickly and accurately. Today, the only good use for a scroll bar is to tell you how far you are through the document.
