Are there any game optimizers?

Is there any applications that optimize the GPU for optimum performance on the intel based iMac?

I am not familiar with any software that will optimize your GPU for gaming. Apple does work with the video card manufacturers and the only thing I can think of that describes what you are looking for would be a driver update. It also depends on what kinds of games you are running.
For instance, Blizzard Entertainment recently posted on their Mac tech forums that they are working on fine tuning their game World of Warcraft to work better with the Core Duos.
Here is the quote:
"We have some work in progress which may yield higher dual core utilization under OSX in future releases of the game. So, the story of WoW's multiprocessor utilization is not yet finished."
So basically, you just gotta wait for updates from either Apple, the video card manufacturers (nVidia, ATI) or the gaming companies themselves. There is also talk on that same forum I mentioned above, that Apple may be working on updating their drivers to handle OpenGL better which would improve game performance.
To get the best possible gaming experience for now, I would recommend you add at least 1GB+ to your iMac. That is probably the easiest/most effective way to kick up your gaming experience.

  • Are there any games on an ipod 2nd generation that will download?

are there any games on an ipod 2nd generation that will download? my daughter was given one from a family member and we haven't been able to download any apps to it. It tells me I need to update by OIS. But you can't for this generation. Does any games work ?

To more easily find compatible apps:
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.
Starting when iOS 7 was releases, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.

  • Are there any game apps that doesn't need wifi

I just got my kids the iPod touch and some places don't have wifi that we can connect to. Are there some games that don't need wifi?

    Hello,
Take a look at the appstore, most games do not require wifi to play, although you do need wifi to download the game initially. Try searching for the type of game your looking for. Or go to the catagories section and brows them there. Unless the description says that it is an online or multiplayer only game then it is most likely to be compatable offline.
Go ahead and take a look. Have fun shopping around!

  • Are there any game controllers compatible with the ipad?

ios7 now supports game controllers, ive seen a few such as logitech and moga contollers built for iphones, but ive not heard of any available for ipads. Does anybody know any different?

There are a few compatible controllers that use bluetooth, but they are not well reviewed. I'd hold out a bit longer until some decent hardware comes out.

  • Are there any downloadable games still out there for 2nd Generation iPod?

I am searching for games that will download on an older iPod. Purchased two 2nd generation iPods on Ebay and am having trouble getting any games that are compatabile. Are there any still out there. Purchased these for 2 grandchildren. Help. Not only are there games, how do I download them. Can I do it from my computer? Can't find any in the app store on the iPod itself or have I just not looked hard enough.

They are there, but it's not easy to find these days.  At least your iPod touch can run iOS 4.2.  My old original iPhone can only run up to iPhone OS 3.1.3...
I used to be able to go into an app category in iTunes (on the computer), and sort the listing by release date, newest to oldest.  Then, I could go to the end of the list, and the older apps/games would be the ones that worked with the older hardware and iOS versions.  However, this method does not seem to work well anymore.  The lists do not appear to go back far enough, so the apps at the end of the list are still fairly new.
I found an app recently.  It's called VintApps.  You can go to the App Store using iTunes on the computer and search for it.  It costs 99 cents.  I can set it to "filter" based on iOS limitation (and other factors).  I can then browse in app categories (in the app), and it shows me lists based on the criteria.  Selecting an app from the list provides its description.  This lets me find apps that work with 3.1.3 (or 4.2 in your case)
Because older devices are slower (with a small screen), what I do is use VintApps on my iPhone to find something that looks interesting.  Then, I use iTunes on my Mac to find that app in the App Store.  If it looks good, I get it there (using my computer's iTunes) and sync it to my iPhone.

  • Hi everyone, I have just purchased a new iMac 27. Is this device able to support a multiple monitor set-up (additional two screens)? If so what do I need and are there any draw backs?

    Hi everyone,
I have just purchased a new iMac 27. Is this device able to support multiple monitor set-up (an additional two screens)? I am not a gamer, so require the set-up for 'office suite' type work and video viewing. if the set-up is possible, what would I need, is it pretty straight forward and are there any draw backs?
    Thank you.

I just purchased the same imac. I connected the other displays using a thunderbolt to dvi adapter and it works fine.

    ...that makes sense to me.
but, why do so many MBA users (on this forum and others) claim that ventilation occurs through the keyboard?  Is this claim based on an old macbook design?
for example, here's a related discussion (although fairly old):

A common misconception of unknown origin. The intake and the exhaust for the cooling fan on the 13" MB and MBP are both located on the rear slot at the base of the hinge. In fact, you can actually see the divider that separates the intake flow from the output flow. If it were through the keyboard crevices, then an awful lot of overheats would result from people using impermeable keyboard covers, as well as Apple's warranty department would be flipping out over the Apple store carrying such covers. iSkin ProTouch FX Keyboard Cover for all MacBooks - Black Printed Keys on White - Apple Store (U.S.)

once again, I've tried a few of these keyboard covers. the Moshi keyboard cover is the ONLY one I can recommend. the others are too thick or change the keyboard experience too much.

Re: Is it safe to use MBP with screen lid closed? Leave charge on always?
    1. Closing the cover will cause more heat. This is not because of covering the keyboard very much (though it does help some heat be retained). It's mainly because of the shape of the hinge and the fact when closed it covers up the back vent a lot more. For the best cooling, it is best to have the screen open. Just run it as a dual monitor, but make the external the Primary monitor, and if you don't want to use the built in, just turn its backlight off and don't use it.
    2. The thing you plug into the wall is not a battery charger. The actual "charger" is built into the computer. It knows when to charge and when not to. If the little light on the power plug is amber, then its charging your battery. When its green, its just powering the laptop and NOT charging your battery at all.

I'd leave the lid open, at least partially...yes it may be fine not doing that, but you are making heat dissipate worse, of course could even theoretically hurt the screen.
As for the battery...well there's really only two choices, have it plugged in or not. As others mentioned, you can't overcharge the battery. It can be damaged a bit from heat, but of course the number one thing that's going to damage it is discharging it...so it's a no brainer-use it plugged in whenever possible, and try to charge it whenever possible when it's not plugged in.

Nope. Apple would disagree with you on that one. Any "closure", which is, when compared to the amount of CFM, is insignificant. In fact, the opening size remains the same. it is only deflected at a slight angle when the lid is closed. Tilt your MBP and see. As well, shutting down the display lowers the heat being generated, even in the lower case. As I said, if it were a problem, Apple would not be selling stands designed to operate your unit in the closed position as the original poster of this thread proposes to do.

  • Are there any native single-player first person shooters available?

    Hi there!
I'm searching for a good first person shooter that runs natively on my Arch64 system.
I know that there are several good first person shooters for Linux available, but i found nothing that gives me something different than deathmatch (well, there ARE several variants of it but in the end all variants are "a bunch of players is in an arena or something like that doing something like killing the other team members or destroying their base, steal their flag etc.").
But i want a single player FPS like Half-Life was. Or like the recently released "Stalker - Call of Pripyat".
Are there any? (FLOSS would be nice but is no must).
    TIA!
    Dirk

I've been looking for a good native FPS for a few weeks now too. I did try Sauerbraten. It was very impressive, but a little... odd. Of course the graphics and sound were great. The story and narrative impressed me, and reminded me of playing the intro to Half-Life 2.
But the odd thing was... little things. Like, I had the game on the "easy" setting, but still got my butt kicked really quickly. (which caused me to lose items and ammo, and therefore became harder) And the enemies were extremely aggressive, but sometimes would just... stand there, looking at me. It was a little eerie. And I died on the map I was playing in places that I probably shouldn't have, simply because it was confusing. (I saw the "Danger - Electricity" signs as I was landing on the platform with dangerous electricity) And I got stuck in a "hole" that was really hard to get out of. (I had to move a box, jump out of it, and try over and over to jump out) And I spent a lot of time trying to figure out where to go next, and I was just in the first 10 minutes of the level. And enemies seem to take a ton of bullets to kill.
So, to summarize, the graphics and sound and narrative and the "running and shooting" were all very good. But the level design and enemy design and difficulty level were a little off.
I uninstalled it and have been playing Assault Cube for a few days. The only "single player" mode is against bots in an arena, but I'm liking it because it is pretty simple (pretty much just running and gunning) and it is not a "twitch" shooter - people actually move a little more like they do in real life, as compared to something like Quake. I get my butt kicked in both Assault Cube and Quake, but at least I get my butt kicked slower in Assault Cube.
EDIT: I've been thinking about trying Marathon (Aleph One). http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=6111 It's a complete FPS. I haven't tried it yet. It's old, but age isn't a problem for me. I still love and play Doom to death.

  • Are there any difference between iPhone 4S and iPhone 5? What are they?

What I already know is that iPhone 5 has a larger screen and is slimmer, but are there any difference between the two.  I have iPhone 4S now, should I buy iPhone 5?

There are a number of major differences between iPhone 4S and iPhone 5, the major one being the processor speed.  iPhone 5 has a much faster processor – two times faster than the processor in iPhone 4S.  This difference is only significant if you use your phone to play high graphics games that require a lot of processing power.  This processing speed also makes the applications load and run faster – iPhone 5 even boots in a shorter time than iPhone 4S.  You can use iPhone 4S comfortably now but when games and graphic apps designed for iPhone 5 are released, you may be forced to upgrade your phone to run the smoothly.

Probably very few if any. You should at least get your iPod touch to iOS 3.1.3, the final version a first-gen iPod touch can run if that's what you have. Then there will be at least a few games you can still run. For upgrading to iOS 3.1.3, see:
