Are there any unique benefits to carplay?
I couldn't find the appropriate community section for this question so I'm just posting it under iPhone since it's kind of related.
I'm hearing a lot about apple's new carplay. It sounds interesting, but I'm having trouble understanding the major benefits of it compared to just using your iPhone in your car. Right now I mount my iPhone and hook it up to my car stereo via USB. All my apps' (music, gps, Siri) audio comes out the car stereo and I'm able to talk to Siri through the car Bluetooth mic. (I could go completely wireless with all the audio via Bluetooth but I prefer the better sound quality of USB plus it charges.). The iPhone screen is easily viewable since it's docked near my vent and when necessary I can easily tap it. Plus all my apps are available (useful driving apps like cheap gas locators), not just the ones supported by carplay.
I see it's beneficial in that the icons on the car display would be bigger. But it's not that big a deal seeing stuff on my mounted iPhone. Plus if it's truly meant to be "eyes free" then that shouldn't matter so much anyway.
I don't think apple would spend so much time and energy on this if it wasn't for a huge benefit. What am I missing?

Since I have the newest version of itunes, I can't back up like normally. The only way is to considilate files and then put them on an external drive which I don't have. Are there any other options? If I can't back up to a disc like I used to, can I instead just keep everything on my ipod and then if I have to get a new computer or something just download all my songs from the ipod to my new computer's itunes? Will that work? Will I still be able to keep all my songs that way?
I'm going to assume the consolidating files does not work due to hard drive space limitations.
Since you're moving to Windows 7, have you tried using the Windows files and settings transfer utility? That will move everything for you to the same location on the new computer, it also allows some control over what actually gets moved.
Alternatively, if you know the location of all of the media, it can be manually moved by copying it from the old computer to the new computer in the same location.
Also, using the Apple article on moving the library, take a slight twist on what it says. Move the iTunes library to the external drive, update the settings in iTunes to reflect the library being on the external drive, then consolodate it.
The options are endless for moving the library... it simply takes a little effort to make it happen and possibly a twist on existing "standard" methods depending on your unique situation. -
Are there any benifits to enabling WDS without WLSE?
My clients will be using WPA with PEAP and 2 ACS 3.3 servers for authentication. Other than having an AP to be the focal point for authentication for a Wireless segment. Are there any benefits to using WDS without having WLSE?
Yes, there are benefits from WDS:
- list of client associations
- list of access points in domain
- fast secure roaming for LEAP (and EAP-FAST?)
- local authentication (radius backup) for LEAP and EAP-FAST
- radio management aggregation
Only radio management needs WLSE to be useful.
Local authentication is possible without WDS.
WDS can be configured on an access point and also on an IOS router (like the 2811) from IOS 12.3(11)T with security feature sets.
As an network administrator I would not do it without WDS. I does not cost extra or performance but it gives centralized information on the WDS device.

Are there any INI or other files I can modify to increase available memory?
I have a new CPU (Intel I7 - 950 with 8GB of memory) and I'm running Elements 9.0. I have a slide show that is just under 20 minutes long and I'm trying to create a WMV file with the highest resolution. The create output starts and gets to about 58% and stops. It never creates a file. I go the lessor resolution and it works. Are there any INI file parameters or other file attributes I can tweak to give the application more resources so I can produce a WMV slide show? I used to create 40-50 minute slide shows with an older version of the software without any problems, it just took a while to run. I cannot believe I don't have enough resources to get this created, but I don't know what I need to do.
I have the same problem with smaller slideshows. I have to restart my system, open Elements and run the slideshow build just to get a 9 minute show produced at the max resolution. It will NEVER work if I try to do ANYTHING else first. This is really getting annoying... Any suggestions - besides using a lower resolution or getting verion 10?
Thanks...Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself independently backed up against loss. To use a device with a new computer you transfer the content from the old computer (or its backup) directly to the new computer, not the device to the new computer. Media syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.

My MacBook Pro is running very hot after lion install. Are there any hardware changes that will help? What can I do to get it back to normal?
I get the impression that most of the users on older hardware experiences similar temperature issues on Lion for a long time now. Awaiting for confirmation from the original poster.
In the meantime I'm just cautious with regards to pushing the machine to such extreme temps, since something tells me such behaviour which includes monitor flickering and the likes is nothing but abnormal for any type of use...
Any clues if 10.7.5 does anything on this? If not I'm afraid i see myself going back to SL for good... -

I do not know of any free third party replacement for iPhoto. For add-ons browse the Store - there are some nice camera apps, image editors, and panorama stitchers, some are free (cam wow, pic collage, Photo splash, pixlr-o-matic). -
Can I move a Virtual Domain Controller from one host(Win Server 2008 R2) to another (Win Server 2012 R2) ? Are there any issues?

trying to do a in-place upgrade of a Domain Controller Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 R2.
The problem was the separated System Reserved Partition. After I removed using this instructions:

The upgrade ran ok, and now have my DC as Windows 2012 R2.

I bought mountain lion for my macbook pro and I'm trying to install it and it says there was an error and I need to boot up but I don't have any other start up disks to boot up with. Are there any suggestions of how I could get my computer started?
Hold the Option key down and restart. Select one of the drives that comes up and hit the Return key.

You could use a browser that does not use Flash or Java, as a safety measure when visiting sites; the Safari browser has no support or recent updates. TenFourFox v 24 is fairly good, and uses later Mozilla code, is compatible with powerPC computer limitations. SeaMonkeyPPC has a similar code, but acts a little different; and there still is iCab, a good browser that will run free, but asks you get a $20. license.
The Safari browser can be used to set a different browser up as system default, so it won't launch and open attachments or web pages; it has a setting in its preferences where you choose another browser as default. As I have four or five browsers and one dedicated to gmail (launched as signed-in, through notifier) that is how I've used the default, otherwise mine are all in the Dock.
There is no new upgrade for Adobe Flash plugin player, etc; but the one in their site for vintage is still available at getflash player at Adobe. Most prompts online are to get you something else, even adware loads up from some not-so-clever efforts to get people to install junk. So go to the source. Someone wrote a patch that is supposed to allow a later version of Flash player to work in older 10.5.8 PPC Mac, but I have not tried it.
The thread of security is mostly based on the user and their caution to avoid odd free software and also avoid some sites that try to get people to load cleanmymac or genieo, or other adware malware voluntarily. Those are troublesome and hard to remove, and can waste processor cycles, slow the computer & mess it up. Mostly from a browser the adware issues arise. So anyway, there is really nothing new on the face of it for obsolete OS X systems users.

New Installation. Sharepoint 2013, Project Server 2013 and SQL Server 2008 SP1 (another box).
When I try to create Project Web App Instance, I get
Provisioning 'PWA': Post provisioning setup failed. Exception 'Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException: Failed to find Project Site object. Are there any database mounted?
Followed by:

Already tried reinstalling the whole farm to no avail. Farm Admin account is used to do everything within this process.

Later found that the service application where I was trying to provision the PWA, it was not associated with the web-application. -
nas on airport extreme not recognized by time machine. same nas was previously used as time machine backup on different airport extreme. are there any configuration files that i can delete to fix this problem ?
Time Machine has been working just fine, but in the last week or two it has given up the ghost. I reset the connections to the drive, and it will basically save a few bytes of data and then hang.
Although Apple originally announced, prior to the release of the first 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBSn), that it would support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks, they removed that option before they did finally release the base station for sale.
Since then, Apple has posted (as you have noted) that they DO NOT support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks. As far as I know, they have not changed from that position and those who do these backups find that they become corrupted over time. Sorry, but it sounds like you just confirmed that for yourself.

No. Again, this feature has never been supported by Apple for every generation of AEBSn released.
2) Are there any changes I can make to get this working again?
If your data backups are critical to you, then you will want to use a different solution for your Time Machine backup destination drive strategy. I would suggest that you connect your WD My Book directly to your Mac in the mean time.
Your other options would be to either use a Time Capsule (which interestingly does support TM backups to AirPort Disks) or a non-Apple solution like the Drobo FS or HP MediaSmart server. -

Thanks to this forum, I've found the redeye tool in iPhoto to be quite useful, but this wasn't the case before I found out about the Caps-Ctrl-9 trick that was posted in this forum.
Are there any other tricks that anyone has discovered in iPhoto that isn't mentioned in the help list?
And any speculation as to why these tools aren't mentioned in the help file? I mean, at first I was ready to give up on iPhoto because of the weak redeye. Why wouldn't they show us how to do this?

Type Caps lockControl9
Undo caps lock
Click on the Retouch or Red-Eye Removal tool
The tab key will toggle between cursor types, a cross or a circle
The "[" and "]" keys decrease or increase the size accordingly.
NOTE: Using the "{" "}" keys will will change the value next to the circle and that represents the degree of change or intensity that the tool imparts on each pass.
Also check out the tip at the end of my signature for backing up the library database file on a frequent basis.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application, iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
Are there any apps to support Bluetooth earpieces that do not support music
Basically I have a Rock candy Bluetooth earpiece for PS3, but I paired it with my white iPad 2 16GB it only works with calls but I want to listen to music or other media such as podcasts or videos. Are there any apps to help me listen to media or any tricks or options? Thanks
If the device does not support the correct Bluetooth profile, there is nothing that you can do to change that.
