Are there any utility programs like Defrag or disc cleanup

Topic.
Can't seem to find them in the utilities. New user here and things seem to be slowing down. I'm "hanging" a lot w/ QT.
Thanks.

Hi Jeffrey,
Have a read of my update below, a digest of all our best Forums contributions and tips.
Follow those maintenance steps first, as a good start before troubleshooting.
There is not much to do to maintain Mac OS X, as pretty much everything is done automatically in the background, even most of the file defragmentation.
More than maintaining, it is about preventing file corruption, that doesn't happen too often anyway.
All You HaveTo Do:
- Back up.
- Keep enough free space on the boot volume (10-15% is fine).
- "Repair Permissions" with Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder), after you used Software Update or after you used an Apple application installer. Verify HD's S.M.A.R.T. status in the meantime.
- Run the three nightly Periodic tasks (AKA "cron scripts") — once a month is fine — as they are not yet completely automated (still the same "sleep delay" behaviour in 10.4.4). (Cocktail, OnyX, TinkerToolSystem, Yasu...)
More Prudent:
Before an OS Update or Upgrade,
- Disconnect all periphericals.
- Run a "Disk Repair" with Disk Utility from the install DVD.
- Much better: rebuild Directory with DiskWarrior.
- You can also clean all (each user separately) account's User, Browsers and Fonts caches (Cocktail, OnyX, TinkerToolSystem, Yasu...), and
- Check for corrupted Preferences (Preferential Treatment).
Software:
In theory we should not need any extra utility, as we already have Terminal and Disk Utility.
But some small applications like Yasu, TinkerTool System, OnyX or Cocktail for example, offer a nice, friendly GUI to many useful Terminal commands.
File defragmentation is not really needed in OS X
— Even (very rarely needed) free space defragmentation is more risky than a simple (and quite fast since Tiger) OS reinstallation —
but DiskWarrior has a very good approach of rebuilding the Directory.
- Read the Readme and Help files, and do not run a task if you don't know what it does.
- Do not install an application before you know how to uninstall it.
(example Anacron or Macaroni: they work well but redundant and about uninstall (???), or some Microsoft software that too often gets us used to unnecessarily give our admin password...)
- Software Updates: no hurry! Do not download too much at a time, install the OS updates separately, and note that there is (in menu Update) an option "Update and Keep Package" that can fit to your backup strategy.

  • In Mac OS Leopard, are there any maintenance programs that I could run

I recently had a failed attempt at installing Final Cut Studio, which has been resolved, but the filed install has left things "weird". The computer crashes ALL the time, there are left over mini-programs that I can't seem to get rid of unless I force it to delete, and the computer, which is a Core 2 Extreme 2.8 GHz, is slower than my iBook on some different tasks. The computer has been taking forever to shut down and boot up.
Any ideas? If not, i will just reinstall all of mac os on it.

Have you updated to OS 10.5.3 yet? It fixes a bug that prevented reinstallation of the Combo updater. If not, download the Combo updater rather than using software update and then install it. If you have used software update, download the Combo updater and reinstall it.
There are some applications such as AppDelete or AppCleaner (both free) or AppZapper (shareware) which claim to clean out all the bits and pieces of an application. There is always the old-fashioned way, "search and destroy" using finder.
There are several free utility programs that accomplish much of what has been recommended that you do in Terminal and some other operations that are useful. OnyX, IceClean, Yasu, Maintenance and a host of others are available. Check them out at MacUpdate or VersionTracker.
I have experienced some failed installs with a couple of apps in Leopard that, I think, were related to some permissions issues. Check the permissions of all of the Final Cut Studio items, including any files that it created and trash the .plist file for it that should be found at User > Library > Preferences.
If that does not improve the situation I would be inclined to uninstall Final Cut Studio and do a fresh install of it.
Oh, be prepared for the permissions repair in any of the utilities such as OnyX to take quite some time. Leopard is incredibly slow at permissions repair in my experience with it to date.
    Good Luck!

  • Are there any muse widgets like jquery's Isotope tiles?

I would love to implement something like isotope into my muse site, but I can't seem to find anything that will work.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this?
    http://isotope.metafizzy.co/index.html

I've dropped the idea of using Jalbum all together its expensive and its very buggy. I just experimented with muse and its capabilities and what I realized there are ways you can work around and bypass its limitations. I created something equivalent to isotope/fancybox but it involves manual labor not much but still its muse and so its visual no code involved or external pages to load. I'm using nested widgets inside of widgets. For example, I created a lightbox  and filled it with a slideshow. However when I wanted to add  lightbox with a + function that's when muse went nuts, so what I did was I reused the same lightbox box gallery I created for the family by adding it to my library for another entry. I put together a video of how it works granted there's no audio or extended ways for you to go about creating such a page this is to show there's a way to do it.

  • Are there any nursing program to install in-store on a macbook pro?, Are there any nursing programs to install in-store on a macbook pro?

    Hello,
I just graduated High School and I was going to buy myself a Macbook Pro for school. I wanted to see if there were any type of nursing programs or softwares available for the macbook before I buy it in a store. And if so, If it can be installed before I buy it? How much, What is it called? I will be starting summer school this month and I do not plan on buying this until the fall or spring. I have looked everywhere for some kind of programs or softwares.Thank you for all your help!
    -Ashley

    Hi Ashley,
Don't know exactly WHAT kind of 'nursing' software you mean, but I typed "medical software mac free" in Google and I get pages and pages of the stuff !
Unlikely thus kind of software would be pre-installed, but it's easy and quick to do youself (even easier than a PC, if that's what you're used to!)
Since it's also free, you can try & discard any that don't meet your requirements.
    Have a look!

  • Were or are there any bittorrent programs that run in OS 9?

I've done a couple of searches but the only thing I found was some kind of kludge you could do that didn't sound that successful with MacPython and Bittorrent. Any programs that ran natively in 9? This is more out of curiosity than actual need of a bittorrent program for 9. Thanks for the help lads.

I want the driving and graphics of GTA 3, all I want more is a cruise control setting for the cars. Does anyone know of any that match my description?

Not yet, but my absolute favorite game for this is Saints Row 2 for PS3. Is there anything like that games's driving controls for iPad?

  • Are there any good fax programs that work with Efax besides Efax Messenger

I just signed up for a free months trial of Efax. I downloaded the Efax Messenger program which seems to work well except for the fact that it does not save any fax packages (on my computer) that I send out. This is an important needed feature. If I send out a package of 5 or 6 files to someone I need to be able to look up what I've sent them. The only way I can do this is to put all the files in a folder named for that particular fax, then put that folder in a second folder that is labeled faxes, then fax the files from the folder by Efax. Quite a process. I called Efax and was told that this feature was only available for a Windows Machine (Efax, catch up!)
Are there any other programs that are easy to use and at least as good as the Efax Messenger that have that feature?
We are traveling in a sailboat, don't have a land line. We only have a wifi internet connection when they are available, (internet cafes, etc.) or sometimes at anchor using long range wifi. I don't have the luxury of going online to check faxes all the time, hence the necessity of having them on the computer.
    Any help appreciated.
    Dan

Just to be clear, though, reducing the resolution of an LCD can have a negative effect on image quality. LCDs have an optimal "native" resolution and setting the resolution below that native level results in a poorer quality image.
Leopard claims "resolution independence" - I have not tried it yet, but if you read the description of this feature, you will note that it applies to the user interface elements. Granted, that's often what you notice the most (i.e. the problem with reducing the resolution below native for an LCD is that the text in Finder, all of the menu bar items, etc., looks "fuzzy"). By appropriately scaling the UI elements, Leopard overcomes the limitation. But the "fuzzyness" will still apply to non-UI things that are displayed - i.e. images. Since based on your posts you will be working with images primarily, high-res vs. standard is still a choice I'd recommend considering carefully, and ideally by trying them both side-by-side.
    Ps. Thanks for awarding points!

  • Are there any way to play movie from hard disc uploaded with java player?

I found quicktime player can export the movie as webpage versions, uses java to play the movie instead of quicktime player.
How can I do the same with iweb? From the webpage which quicktime generated said should insert some code to the head of page and something else, but how do I insert those codes to the page I create with iweb?
    It said :
"To make your media viewable on the Internet, your media assets (movies, poster image) must be placed on a publicly accessible server.
The URL parameters must be modified if your media assets are served from a different location than your web page.
The movie URL parameters must always point to the reference movie (carsmoke.mov) rather than a source movie.
The reference movie must be kept in the same folder as the source movies.
Source movie names cannot be changed, but you can change the name of the reference movie (remember to change it in the HTML code as well).
Please note, to properly validate as XHTML, the <style> tag and the first <script> tag should be placed within your page's <head> tag."
Use this code in the <head> of your web page:
    <script src="http://www.apple.com/library/quicktime/2.0/scripts/prototype.js" language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <script src="http://www.apple.com/library/quicktime/2.0/scripts/qtp_poster.js" language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <link href="http://www.apple.com/library/quicktime/2.0/stylesheets/qtp_poster.css" rel="StyleSheet" type="text/css" />
Use this code in the <body> of your web page:
    " <<a href="carsmoke.mov" rel="qtposter">
    <<img src="xxx.jpg" width="120" height="50" />
    <</a> "
(I put < into << so it will not execute in this page...)
How to do these with iweb?

  • Simple question. Since apple has extinguished iDVD Are there any other Software programs that can produce the end product iDVD did?

There are many a thousands of people who are producingvideos on completed DVDs. As an amateur videographer using iMovie first nowusing Final Cut pro to produce completed ready to distribute DVDs, I find ithard to believe at the meeting you mentioned anyone with common sense wouldhave explained the scenario above. On an amateur level so many folks have beencreating videos of Weddings, Home Movies, and many different Special Events. Onin particular are sports events. I shoot a sports event like Mix Martial ArtsEvents utilizing several video cameras. Then editing with Final cut Pro andsometimes iMovie. All of my completed videos that have been edited in either ofthese two programs are shared (like hand in glove) with iDVD. Short of steppinginto the commercial world Apple has deleted many people from producing a semiprofessional looking product.
I do not know if the can be answered here in the format buthere it goes!!

The question for anyone who knows is: Since apple has extinguished iDVD Are there any other Software programs that can produce the end product iDVD did?
I appreciate your input but it realy does not answer the question. iDVD will soon not be able to work with newer versions of Macs as it has been left behind by Apple!

Since I have the newest version of itunes, I can't back up like normally. The only way is to considilate files and then put them on an external drive which I don't have. Are there any other options? If I can't back up to a disc like I used to, can I instead just keep everything on my ipod and then if I have to get a new computer or something just download all my songs from the ipod to my new computer's itunes? Will that work? Will I still be able to keep all my songs that way?

I'm going to assume the consolidating files does not work due to hard drive space limitations.
Since you're moving to Windows 7, have you tried using the Windows files and settings transfer utility?  That will move everything for you to the same location on the new computer, it also allows some control over what actually gets moved.
Alternatively, if you know the location of all of the media, it can be manually moved by copying it from the old computer to the new computer in the same location.
Also, using the Apple article on moving the library, take a slight twist on what it says.  Move the iTunes library to the external drive, update the settings in iTunes to reflect the library being on the external drive, then consolodate it.
The options are endless for moving the library... it simply takes a little effort to make it happen and possibly a twist on existing "standard" methods depending on your unique situation.

Thank you for the answer, I suppose the main thrust of my enquiry is to find out if 65 MBits is my ATV theoretical limit of reception.  If that is the case then I am happy as a Pig in Mud
I may have allowed myself to become a victim by listening to Fanbois posting elsewhere who always seem to go one better than everyone else. Now I have learnt two things Today; 65Mbit/s = Good enough and only read the apple forums.
