Are there iBook G4 operating restrictions?

Owning 2 older iMacs (OS 8.5 and 9), which I haven't even touched since I got my iBook a couple of years ago, I am using this G4 all day long, i.e for EVERYTHING. It's been perfectly good up to now, but I just bought the upgrade to Tiger and am afraid that the iBook will be getting "old" (I really only shut it off for the night). Could it actually act up after loading it with all the additional material and adding even more hours to operating it?
I am willing to let the other 2 Macs go (I don't think anyone will buy these) but don't really have the means to buy a proper new desktop computer to ease the load on my iBook. I guess the iBook is meant to be a portable convenience item and not the main computer of the household ... Can I go on using it as I am doing now, i.e. almost continuously throughout the day, without positively wearing it out or having it die on me?
Oh, and another question: can I add more RAM where I now have two slots installed: the built-in 128 DIMMO and 512 DDR-SDRAM which I added a short while ago? Will these be enough to operate Tiger efficiently, or rather, safely?
I hope you can reassure me that I'm in good shape with my present setup, or maybe tell me about the best alternatives. Thanks a million!

I have Tiger running quite acceptably on a B&W G3. I doubt your G4 iBook will live out its usefulness anytime soon.
As for support for future OSX releases, I obviously don't have the official information on Leopard but seeing how many G3 systems are supported under Tiger, I can't forsee G4 support being dropped in the forseeable future.
My last statement, though an educated guess based on personal experience, is still a guess.

  • OS X Address Book + iPhone 4 + mobileMe - Are There Limits?

OK... so with no love on the previous thread yet, I'm asking again for assistance but will take a different tact. I can't seem to find an answer to the question.
Are there limitations and/or restrictions in OS X Address Book, iPhone 4 and/or mobileMe as to the number of data fields each contact can have or display?
    Please let me know.

Figured out what was happening here. It seems that even though a new contact is synced immediately (from MobileMe to the iPhone), categorization data is NOT -- it seems to take hours until this data gets updated.

  • The text in a lot of my books I have downloaded in IBooks has disappeared. It is mostly the older books on my IPad.  The books are there but the text is missing. How do I get the text back?

On my IPad, the books I have downloaded are there; however, the text has disappeared. It only happened with the books that were older. Any idea how I can get the text back on these books?

Try closing the iBooks app. Press the home button to get to the home screen if you're not already there. Then double click the home button. Locate the iBooks icon at the bottom. Hold your finger down on it until a red minus appears. Tap the red minus. Press the home button to return to normal. Then relaunch iBooks.
If that fails, delete the books, then you can redownload them under the Purchased tab in "Store."

Don't know. You have not told us what system you have.

  • Are there  any other PPC  operating systems

I would just like to know if there are any PPC operating systems
I know theres the mac operating systems up to 10.5
and Ubuntu works with PPC Macs
Is there anything other operating systems that work with ppc

The Wikipedia is your first resource, as BD has shown.
Here are ten popular GNU/Linux distributions (not all PPC):

Last year's OpenSUSE is PPC, and the last version of Fedora was PPC.
What's really interesting is QNX, written by two famous computer scientists (Gordon Bell designed supercomputers). You can buy the source code and program for it (that's all). It's famous for its reliability, driving NASA's deep space probes. It runs your Audi.

An OpenQNX was promised, but I don't see it. In any case, it's not for us. (Well, it might be good for watering gardens without worry.)

Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.
Then, determine if your Mac meets ALL minimum system install requirements.
To install OS X  10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.9 Mavericks (free upgrade, but currently unavailable) or OS X 10.10 Yosemite (currently available free upgrade) you need one of these Macs:
OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion purchased emailed download code here.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory (I strongly advise, at least, 4 GBs of RAM or more)
8 GB or more of available space
    Next,
If you run any older Mac software from the earlier PowerPC Macs, then none of this software will work with the newer OS X versions (10.7 and onward). OS X Snow Leopard had a magical and invisible PowerPC emulation application, called Rosetta, that worked seamlessly in the background that still allowed older PowerPC coded software to still operate in a Intel CPU Mac.
The use of Rosetta ended with OS X Snow Leopard as the Rosetta application was licensed to Apple, from a software company called Transitive, which got bought out, I believe, by IBM and Appe  could no longer secure their rights to continue to use Rosetta in later versions of OS X.
So, you would need to check to see if you have software on your Mac that maybe older than, say, 2006 or older.
Also, check for app compatibilty  here.
    http://roaringapps.com/
If you have any commercial antivirus installed and/or hard drive cleaning apps installed on your Mac, like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUpMyMac, MacCleanse, etc. now would be a good time to completely uninstall this apps by doing a Google search to learn how to properly uninstall these types of apps.
These types of apps will only cause your Mac issues later after the install of the new OS X version and you will have to completely uninstall these types of apps later.
Once you have determined all of this, you should be able to find the latest versions of OS X by clicking on the Mac App Store icon in the OS X Dock and then login to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID and password and if you purchased a download code, input that code.
You can then begin the download and installation process of installing the newer versions of OS X from the Mac App Store.

  • I have Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4, Quickbooks Pro 2010, Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac, Operating in Windows 7.  Are there any recommendations for running Quickbooks Pro 2010?

I have Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4, Quickbooks Pro 2010, Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac, Operating in Windows 7.  Quicbooks Pro 2010 is not responding or opening currently. Quickbooks does not support Parallels anymore.  I hear Apple Bootcamp is an opton.  Are there any recommendations for running Quickbooks Pro 2010 on Mac?

QuickBooks Pro 2010 for Mac is not supported in Lion. QB Pro 2011 will work, but I just got an email today that 2011 will not be updated to work in Mountain Lion. QB Pro 2012 will be updated for ML.
Be aware that the Mac version of QuickBooks is shamefully lacking in features compared to the Windows version. I do use the Mac version, but it has more features than I need for a small business, so it doesn't affect me. No one knows why Intuit seems to hate Mac users, but they show it every day.
If QB Pro 2012 for Mac can be downloaded as a demo, I would strongly suggest testing with it before making a final decision. You will be able to import the Windows data, but possibly not all of it, depending on the Windows version features you use.
Boot Camp allows you to install Windows on its own, bootable partition. When you boot to it, you are of course running Windows in every sense of the word. Just on Mac hardware rather than typical PC gear. Your Windows version of QB will work there without issue. The problem is having to boot back and forth between Windows and OS X, depending on what software it is you need to use at the time.

  • Are there restrictions on Mp4 for HDS streaming

I am new to Adobe media player, so please bear with my ignorance.
I am able to HDS play some MP4 videos but for some others I get a 400 Bad request (from logs).
my player video src looks like http://<server>/hds-vod/somemedia.mp4.f4m.
Are there any restrictions how the MP4 file should be encoded or am I looking at the issue from the wrong side?
    Cheers

I would love to know what's going on with https sites, as well.  I just got a new Macbook Pro and was organizing my topsites the way I like them.  On my iMac and my Air, a certain https site sits just fine pinned to topsites.  But for whatever reason, I cannot get it to stay on this machine.  I'll add it, it'll be there, I'll come back after quitting Safari and it's gone.
The crazy part is other https sites (like Facebook) stay pinned just fine.  Aggravating, because this particular one is my #1 topsite.

  • Are there copyright restrictions?

Are there copyright restrictions to my creating a document using a Pages Template, if I keep the image originally in the template? Is there a restriction on my selling something that contains the original template image? I have created a large poster to sell for a fund raiser for our non-profit program. The poster contains text and other art work of my creation, but the original image from the template is the illustration. I want to make sure I am not in infringement before I sell these pieces under the name of our non-profit.
I read the Pages license agreement (it is Pages '09 version 4.0.5 (852)) and only found this statement:
"You may not use, extract or distribute, commercially or otherwise, on a standalone basis, any photographs, images, graphics, artwork or similar assets (“Digital Imagery”) contained within, or provided as a part of, the Apple Software, or otherwise use the Digital Imagery outside the context of its intended use as part of the Apple Software." (page 1, section 2.f)
"Outside the intended use" sounds like it means what I've done, created something using Pages and templates, right?
Any ideas welcome ... or does Apple need to tell me for sure?
    thanks!

Well I am no lawyer so don't take any of this as set in stone. I would contact Apple directly if you feel you have to use the images. However, my 2¢ worth would be that the images are Image Placeholders and therefore are meant to be replaced. So using them as a finished project, in my mind, would be using them Outside the intended use.

  • Certain Crystal reports don't show data - are there restrictions

    Hello,
We created quite a few reports in Crystal Reports (like invoice, deliverynote, picklist etc.).
When we connect some reports in SBO (layout- and design manager) they do not show any data. Only text fields are shown.
In these reports we use tables, UDF and Views. We also have subreports.
The reports are working fine in Crystal itself and also when using Crystal Wave (add-on). All parameters are set the right way, otherwise we would become a parameter error.
We did a test with one of the reports to remove the subreport and then it did show data (not the data from the subreport of course).
Another report with tables, UDF, views and a subreport doesn't give an error. It shows all the data.
So I was wondering what could cause this. Are there any restrictions to a report when connecting a Crystal Report to SBO using the layout- and design manager.
    Tim

Do you maybe have inner joins for all of your tables and views?
Maybe it's a parameter issue causing no rows to be displayed.  Did you test the exact DocEntry@ for your layouts?
No, from my experience I have not seen any limits when using SBO and CR inside the client.

  • What restrictions are there when downloading Premiere Pro CS7

I would like to know if there are any restrictions to the trial software such as missing codecs when exporting or the inability to dynamic link to After Effects for example. Are there any others? It would be nice to be able to assess the software thoroughly before buying.

They appear to be. My After Effects is installed through the CC and is working fine. So too is Premiere Pro. They both work independently of each other but one of the big reasons for me switching to Adobe PP is the fact that I'm supposed to be able to easily, and without losing data, switch between AE and PP and back again and it'd be nice to see how it works in practice.
