Funny you should ask... At about the same time that the Xserve was discontinued, we also lost our channel rep of nearly 14 years. Right now we are not sure who our rep is. I have however, sent this to as many people in Apple that I could think of. And I plan on continuing to reach out to as many as possible.
The sad reality is that this decision is impacting customer deployments and the future of customer installations. Apple strives for market share and loves to tout those numbers. But the numbers we fought for over these last eight years are going to disappear.
As much as this impacts our business, we are making up for it in enterprise deployment of systems. We will survive and lead in our geographic area. I do not fear that. But OS X Server is a UNIX server and with it has come all of the benefits of a UNIX system, including legitimacy in a data center. The Intel Xserve cemented this reality because of its hardware configuration and form factor. Yes, we have G4 and G5s still in service. But those are mostly in all Mac shops that understand the benefits and can work around the buzz word limitations. But fortune 100/500 IT departments did not really get on board until the release of the Intel server.
Still beating the drum to raise awareness. Spread the word and talk to your Apple reps.
Also, ask about the direction that Apple's Enterprise team is going. If the news I hear is correct, then our fears about all things pro and enterprise going away are likely true.

  • AC 8 - Does this version come stock with the email widget and print widget?  Are there other non stock widgets I should also purchase?

Thinking of purchasing AC8 for training and quizzes / assessments.  Does it come with the print and email widgets?  Are there other widgets I might also need that don't come stock in Version 8?
    Thanks
    Tina

Thanks Lilybiri for your response.  I had a version of Captivate version 7 and had to purchase an email piece separately so I would receive notifications on quiz completions etc.  I just need to know if that would also be the case for the print function and email function in 8.
    Thanks

  • Are there benefits to the Blackmagic Intensity Pro for HDV capture ?

Are there benefits to the Blackmagic Intensity Pro for HDV capture ?
    I have a Sony HDR-FX1 that records in HDV 1440 x 1080
I have already captured the footage to miniDV tape.
Can the intensity card get the full 1920 x 1080 video ?
I now use Premiere to capture my video and my HDV is in mpeg2 and my SD is in DV type 2 AVI
What format does the intensity card capture at ?
Are there other ways to capture that would make the footage better.
From what I have read allot of people have had problems with these cards.
Im just looking for the best way to get the footage off my camera with the best resolution.
    Thanks:  Glenn

    Glenn,
I have posted this before in the PC Buying Guide (post #23 and later), but have a look at this diagram:
The problem is that once recorded to tape, the material is compressed to MPEG and there is no way to get the data back, that were lost during compression. The only thing you achieve is that you lose device control, lose all timecode information, lose all metadata like date and timestamp and exposure data and lose the capability of scene detection. There are no gains to compensate the losses.
Compare it to a glass of orange juice, that was made by heavily compressing oranges. How do you think you can reconstruct the original oranges that the juice came from? Were there 4 large oranges or 6 small ones or a mixture? Were they light colored or were they dark or a mixture of light and dark?
BlackMagic in their marketing may lead you to believe otherwise, but the truth is they can only guess at how many oranges were used, their size and color. It is nothing more than a guess.

  • Are there other options for renting and downloading movies?

I have watched movies downloaded from Apple a couple of time, but I really don't like the iTunes interface - my main complaint is that there is no way to filter movies so that I can quickly scan for rentals.
I rarely watch any movie more than one time, so I have no interest in buying a movie - I only want to rent, and it is a huge waste of time to hunt through iTunes movies one by one to see if I can rent it or not.  It just not worth my time.
I don't know if Apple plans to fix this shortcoming or not, but until then, are there other options for downloading rental movies to watch on my MacBook Pro or my iPad?  Online streaming is fine, and I use Netflix and others for that, but I would like to get movies to watch on airplanes and other places where I don't have an internet connection.
    Thanks

Try NFS. SMB is for connecting to Windows servers.

I have 10.6 8 Snow Leopard and trying to download yosemite by it keeps failing.  Are there other operating systems in between that need to be installed first?

Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.
Then, determine if your Mac meets ALL minimum system install requirements.
To install OS X  10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.9 Mavericks (free upgrade, but currently unavailable) or OS X 10.10 Yosemite (currently available free upgrade) you need one of these Macs:
OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion purchased emailed download code here.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory (I strongly advise, at least, 4 GBs of RAM or more)
8 GB or more of available space
    Next,
If you run any older Mac software from the earlier PowerPC Macs, then none of this software will work with the newer OS X versions (10.7 and onward). OS X Snow Leopard had a magical and invisible PowerPC emulation application, called Rosetta, that worked seamlessly in the background that still allowed older PowerPC coded software to still operate in a Intel CPU Mac.
The use of Rosetta ended with OS X Snow Leopard as the Rosetta application was licensed to Apple, from a software company called Transitive, which got bought out, I believe, by IBM and Appe  could no longer secure their rights to continue to use Rosetta in later versions of OS X.
So, you would need to check to see if you have software on your Mac that maybe older than, say, 2006 or older.
Also, check for app compatibilty  here.
    http://roaringapps.com/
If you have any commercial antivirus installed and/or hard drive cleaning apps installed on your Mac, like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUpMyMac, MacCleanse, etc. now would be a good time to completely uninstall this apps by doing a Google search to learn how to properly uninstall these types of apps.
These types of apps will only cause your Mac issues later after the install of the new OS X version and you will have to completely uninstall these types of apps later.
Once you have determined all of this, you should be able to find the latest versions of OS X by clicking on the Mac App Store icon in the OS X Dock and then login to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID and password and if you purchased a download code, input that code.
You can then begin the download and installation process of installing the newer versions of OS X from the Mac App Store.

  • How many ways are there to get the Width/Height of an image ?

I am currently using the following code to get the width and hight of an image :
    BufferedImage Buffered_Image=ImageIO.read(new File(Image_Path));
    int Image_Width=Buffered_Image.getWidth();
int Image_Height=Buffered_Image.getHeight();I don't need to get the image (*.jpg, *.gif, *.png), just want to know it's dimensions. I wonder how many other ways are available to do the same thing in a Java application ?

That's what I thought. I am asking because I hit a wall and am trying to find a different approach.Yeah, if you only have one file type you can probably write the code to read the header in 20 min.
I packed my programs into an executable Jar file which I can run and access images on my C:\ drive, everything worked fine until I tried to experiment with something new. I know that I can force JVM to pre-load all my java classes just after it starts, so I deleted the jar right after the program pre-loaded all my classes and tried to see if it would work, but now I get a null pointer error when it tried to get the width/height of an existing image, because ImageIO.read return null. ( The same image is still on my C:\ drive )Sounds like a strange thing you're doing here. What's the point of this?
So I wonder why it makes a difference after I deleted the jar, what was the problem ( or do I need to pre-load another class related to ImageIO.read ? ), and maybe if I use something else other than the ImageIO.read to get the width/height, I can bypass the problem.I dunno why you need to do this preload stuff and/or delete anything. I'd say leave the JVM and the app alone if possible.

Running 10.6.8 on Intel dual core iMac, it keeps on losing internet connection. Webpages get stuck after a minute or so. If I check the internet connection via diagnostics it seems to work just fine. Others, like the iPad use the same wifi connection and never fail. What can I do?

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Are there any libraries can be used to generate Type 1 font postscript file

I am trying to create a Type 1 font postscript file. But I found it is hard to find the library to generate the Type 1 font postscript file. I just found a library named iText which can create the Type 1 font PDF file.
Are there any libraries can be used to generate Type 1 font postscript file?
    Thanks!

I don't see much benefit with the current ODI adaptors for planning if it is an EPMA type planning application.
They have been specifically designed to work with classic planning applications.
It certainly is possible to load into EPMA interface tables using ODI though there are no direct adaptors and it takes quite a bit of effect to get them into the correct format.
    Cheers

  • Are there other internet browsers that work well displaying websites with a lot of Flash content?

Other than the browser that came on the Samsung Droid Charge....
Are there other internet browsers that work well displaying websites with a lot of Flash content?
    Thanks in advance!

I use Dolphin Browser 6.0. Its faster than 5.0 and has no issues with Flash.  I have used flash and used the Beta 6.0 and now the actual released version. Its the best so far. It has tabs like a normal computer browser and even has a gesture feature to do scrolling.
Others are Firefox which has NO flash. Then there is SkyFire which is ok, uses its servers to compress data and show it on your phone, its quick but I found the quality of images not as good as stock.
Opera Mobile and Mini do the same as skyfire.
I personally just didnt care for Xscope of Miren browsers.  Didnt care for the feel of Xscope and Miren was developed in China and is modeled after Iphone Browser.
Try em all if you want, biggest benefit of the aftermarket browser is you can sync certain accounts (dolphin with google, firefox with firefox) and instead of storing the Cache info using phone memory you can now save the data and the web browser on the SD card.

  • Are there other good browsers for 10.4?

I have been having Safari problems that I cant sort out. Are there other good browsers even better?
    Bob

    Hi, Bob.
I use OmniWeb. IMO far superior to Safari for the following reasons:
    1. Try disabling animations in Safari, a basic function in other browsers, including OmniWeb: nowhere to be found in Safari.
    2. OmniWeb provides sophisticated content filtering, built-in and easily tailored. I virtually never see advertising. Other than popup blocking, Safari has no such built-in capability.
    3. With OmniWeb, you can selectively disable plugins. With other browsers, disabling plugins is all-or-nothing. I run with Flash disabled (no annoying Flash ads) but can still use other plugin-dependent content, like QuickTime. Once again, Safari can't do this: plugins are all-or-nothing.
    4. With OmniWeb, you can set site-specific preferences. For example, you may have one site on which you like the links to be underlined, but on other sites you do not want underlined links. Once again, something Safari cannot do.
    5. OmniWeb is far more stable: I can't recall the last time OmniWeb crashed. Safari seems to be crash-prone and particularly subject to cache errors.
    6. The OmniWeb folks actually listen to their registered users. I submitted requirements like #1 above via the Safari feedback and no joy. I suggested #3 to the OmniWeb folks and it was in the next release.
OmniWeb is available as a free trial. It's worth the license fee.
    Good luck!

I've downloaded the new 5.0 update and not all the new features are there.  Just the newsstand, reminders and videos icons plus icloud.  Everything else is the same as before.  What should I do now?  It says I have the latest update.  ???

Hummmm, you might not be missing anything... From what I understand, really the only new visible add-on apps type programs are Newstand and Reminders. The Notification Center seems to be about how your info and alerts are pushed to your screen and you control that thru the phone settings>General>Notifications, the panel is accessed by swiping downward from the top of your screen. Weird I know, should be more obvious. Enjoy!
Don't forget, you can now use the volume button on the side of your phone to take photos. I really like this!
