We have a Mid 2009 13.3" Macbook Pro 5, 5.  Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz
Right now it has a 250 GB hard drive which after much review seems to be failing.  I have moved all essential items off the hard drive onto two seperate external drives.  It's running OSX 10.5.8 so it's outdated.  We have Snow Leopard ready to go, but I was nervous about starting it to upgrade and then the hard drive failing in the middle and being without a computer.
So it lead me to replacing the hard drive.  I don't know much about Mac's since I was always a PC guy and this is my GF's computer.  Are the two hard drives I put above sufficient for the model we have?  I know we need certain tools to get into the computer, what ones are they?
Also, where could we find a battery replacement since it's pretty tapped out when it comes to power?  Thanks for you all your help!

Do not get the WD, it has computability issues in certain macbook, and is the least reliable.
Get the HGST travelstar,  Hitachi is used by Apple and is the best 2.5" that can be obtained.
Dont buy 3rd party bateries, they are most often lemons. Apple replacement batteries are not that much more than offbrand batteries which you should neither use nor trust.
Your very best option at the lowest price and the SAME HD as used by Apple is here:

  • Tried to replace RAM but now computer not starting...PowerMac G5 dual 2.0 - are my hard drives safe? What's up?

Hello - I tried to increase the RAM in my old and trusted Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0...2005)  tonight and now I'm in trouble. It has only 4 slots for RAM.  It came installed with 2X256 and 2X512 ram cards.  I bought 2X 1GB of Ram from Crucial.com after sending them the specs of my computer they assured me it was the right RAM.  I installed the RAM just how the youtube tutorials instructed....  I replaced the 2 256 cards with the new 1GB cards and closed up the computer......note:  I also "dusted" the inside of the mac very carefully and lightly with a barely damp rag.....
I plugged her in and the power button light immediately went on but the computer did not.  The button wouldn't respond to being held down either.   No sign of a startup or a fan noise. Nothing on the screen, no signal.... Nothing.....  So I tried reversing the order of the RAM, I installed the 1GB along with the 512's.  Nothing again, just the light turns on when I plug her in.  Then I returned the RAM to the original configuration.....again NOTHING...just the light on.
I reset the SMU.  (little button underneath the RAM area)  I haven't tried to reset the PRAM yet, but I'm pretty sure that will not work either as she is not starting up at all....just the light is on...  I didn't get a noticeable shock or static spark during the entire operation either. ****....whats up?
Are my Hard Drives safe in there?
Any ideas out there?  Thanks in advance to your advice, T

Ouch!  That was not the way to get dust out.  Running that damp rag anywhere near an electronic component, even if you were wearing a properly grounded writs strap, was way dangerous.
Did you lay the machine on its left side when you replaced the RAM?  That is much safer (though the recommendation only shows up in the service documentation, not the user guide, for some reason).
What I would do at this point is to remove all RAM and try to power the machine.  If other stuff is OK, you won't start but you will see the lunar LED flashing in a repetitive pattern above the power switch.  If you don't see that happening, then things are exceptionally serious.

  • External hard drive compatible with macbook pro 10.5.8

external hard drive compatible with macbook pro 10.5.8, i need a hard drive that will work with 10.5.8 to back everything up before upgrading to 10.6. a hard drive that is compatable with 10.5.8 has been impossible to find, a hard drive that works with both opperating systems is what i am looking for, any information that can help is appreciated

You can buy just about any USB2.0 hard drive and use it with your MacBook Pro.  Many older external drives come pre-partitioned and formatted FAT32 for use on Windows.  Your Mac can use that file system as well, but it has limitations on file sizes.  You can always re-partition your external drive and re-format it as HFS+ (MacOS Extended Journaled) then your old Mac OS version and your new one should both be able to access it just fine.  One thing to keep in mind is that many older OSes don't really handle drives larger than 2TB well, so you would probably want to try to keep your external drive to something smaller than 2TB...

  • External Hard Drive Compatible with Mac and Windows?

So my old laptop is a Dell Latitude and I bought a Western Digital external hard drive and put all my files/pics/music on it. The information the WD came with said its compatible with Mac and Windows, but when I plug it into my brand spankin new Macbook, it doesn't register with the computer and won't show up. What's going on?

I recently ran into that problem. In order to have the hard drive compatible for both PC and Mac it must be in a FAT32 format. In order to do this though all your files will be deleted (in order to reformat). You can do this by plugging in the hard drive into you mac and going under disk utility and there you will find your hard drive and under erase change the format to FAT32 and then you press erase (all will be deleted off the external drive though)

Gift cards can only be used in the App/iTunes store in the country in which they were purchased. You can only purchase items from the store of the country you are physically located.

I have a 4th gen 20G ipod whose hard drive has died.  Are replacement hard drives available through the apple store?

I don't think Apple will do that repair for you, because the iPod is too old.  I believe the hard drive type used in 4th gen and older iPods is no longer produced.  There may be non-Apple shops who can do the repair, but they may be using a working part salvaged from a used iPod.
If you want to do the repair work yourself, and you are good at such things, this web site has repair guides
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPod_Original
(There are probably also YouTube videos on the topic.)
NOTE:  There are two hard drive physical sizes.  The thick version has two platters, and corresponds to the "thick" iPods (with double storage capacity).  A 4th gen 20GB model should be the thin version.  The hard drive used in iPods up to 4th gen should work interchangeably, but 5th gen and later iPods use a different type.
I have a 4th gen iPod that started out as a 20GB.  The hard drive failed, so I put a compact flash card on an adapter in there.  The adapter is like this one (I bought it a few years ago so it's probably not the same seller)
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Compact-Flash-CF-SSD-To-Toshiba-IPod-1-8-inch-Adapte r-Black-/121174875639
The compact flash card is standard; I bought the cheapest one.  I currently have an 8GB card in there, but prices have come down, so I may get a 64GB card soon.  It works great with the 8GB card.  No more hard drive spin-up delay.  Battery lasts longer.  It's lighter.  And it should be more shock resistant.
The only mod I needed to make on the adapter was to bend over two pins 90º, where you place a jumper to set the drive to "master."  The adapter plus CF card is actually smaller and thinner than just original 1.8-inch Toshiba hard drive; I used some thin foam packing material (cut to the right shape) to take up the excess space and ensure the adapter and card did not become disconnected.
The 4th gen iPod has excellent sound, compared to some later iPods.

  • Can't get rid of items that are making hard drive sleepless

I have an Intel iMac with a dead internal drive. I'm now booting and running it off its backup clone drive, an external La Cie Firewire drive. But the drive is constantly cycling, spinning down and spinning up, even when all apps are closed and the iMac seems (and should be) asleep (if the internal drive was doing this and i couldn't hear it, no wonder it died).
I looked in Activity Monitor to see what it's up to when it's supposed to be asleep, and see some repeated entries from outdated stuff- Lexmark Network Services (from a printer i no longer have) and Palm Desktop Background, from a Palm program i haven't used since 2006 and thought was de-installed.
The thing is, i can't seem to get rid of them. It's difficult to pinpoint their exact source thru Spotlight (or Inspect in Activity Monitor), and when i throw what i can trace of them in the trash, i can't empty it, i get a message that says "USB Transport rsrc is in use".
How can i get rid of these items, which are obsolete and might be what is keeping the drive cycling?
I removed a bunch of unneeded items from Login Items, but Lexmark one isn't there. And what is "Transport Monitor" (shows in both Startup Items and Activity Monitor)? Can i delete it from Login items?
Energy Saver settings seem fine- it's set to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity. It's just not going inactive.
    Suggestions?
I'm having to shut the iMac down whenever i walk away from it to keep from hearing all that cycling from the drive (and wondering what it's doing to the drive).

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode, like if it still changes in 5-10 minutes...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it maybe some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. It also may be Video Card or Airport going bad.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
Transport Monitor & Palm Desktop are related...

  • What is the "best" internal hard drive compatible with macbook pro 13.3" product number: MD101LL/A  that does not damage OS?

I'm looking for an upgrade in space ( 750gb - 1 TB) and performance on the hard drive, but I have read in many forums that many "compatible" hard drives may damage the OS. I plan on installing bootcampt with Windows 7 and the latest Mac OS. I'm wondering if anyone has updated their HD and if they've experienced any problems with it, or if anyone has any suggestions. Thank you for your advice in advance!

I'm wondering if anyone has had any particular experience with the Seagate 1TB solid state hybrid drive (found here: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Solid-Hybrid-2-5-Inch-ST1000LM014/dp/B00B99JUBQ). It boasts SSD-like speeds at a fraction of the cost, and its right around my budget, but perhaps its too good to be true?
I have two of those Seagate SSHDs, using one as the internal drive in my primary MBP.  Boot and shutoff times are dramatically less than before (using 7200 rpm HGST HDDs).  In other respects, I have no complaints regarding the drive performance.  I can recommend them based on my limited experience (~3 months).  The $99 price does look very attractive.
Note that when you install a HDD of larger capacity in a MBP, it should be reflected in your backup strategy.  Do you have a backup drive to accommodate the additional data that you will be able to store on the new internal HDD?
    Ciao.

  • External hard drives compatible with time capsule generation 3

I am trying to connect a little 160Gb HP hard drive to my time capsule via a hub which also connects successfully a non wireless printer. This particular hard drive uses two usb in's to connect. Once i plug it into time capsule, it powers up, thinks for a while, the wee blue light becomes solid and there it is.
However it does not show up in the finder sidebar under Shared - though i have set preferences to show everything. the hard drive is formatted correctly, and i can access it when i plug it directly into the imac.
am i missing something ? or is it just not compatible with my time capsule ? - perhaps the two usb connections are the cause? i just want to be able to save files and access them on the external hard drive via the network from imac and laptop, instead of having to plug it in to either.....
    any help much appreciated...

yep am using a  usb hub, time cap. has only the one usb port- yes two usb outs on the hard drive , sorry, which merge into one into the hd, is bus powered...

  • Is this hard drive compatible.

I'm looking to install a second internal hard drive on my Powermac G5. Is this Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 compatible?

    Thanks.

I bought yesterday a 750 GB Seagate SATA drive from a local dealer. I had installed previously only IDE discs on older machines, and the procedure was pretty straightforward ;never had any problem initializing these kind of discs for use with the Mac.
Installed the SATA (pretty easy and fast on the new Mac PPCs) but when the system prompted me to initialize the new disk, Disk Utility gave me the following report:
This Drive has reported a fatal Hardware error to Disk Utility
If the drive has not failed completely, back up as much data as you can and replace it with another drive
Obviously I returned it to the dealer next day. Supposedly, he installed it in a PC and was able to format it with no problem. (!?) Since he didn't offer a replacement, --and data backup being a crucial and delicate issue-- I asked for a refund. I am buying the same kind of disk --maybe a 500 GB unit if the bigger one is not available-- with another dealer. I fear this could happen again. Any idea why this could be happening and how could I initialize the disc if Disk Utility won't do the job?

  • What Are eSATA Hard Drives ?

I have noticed that LaCie have been producing a "Quadra" external Hard Drive in addition to their Triple Interface ones.
    http://www.computerwarehouse.co.uk/detail/5724250/2/-/-/1/-/-/-/1185630548362973
These have an eSATA interface - what is that? - together with 2 FW800 ports, 1 FW400 and a USB 2.0.
What are the advantages or disadvantages of eSATA ?
They seem to be priced the same as the old Triple, so does that mean they are better value?
    Ian.

    Hi Ian,
eSATA is an extension of the specs for the SATA interface, basically adding hotplugging capability. It's used for external SATA drives or like the LaCie Quadra, drives that have multiple interfaces. It's the 'latest thing'. The main advantages are
1 - if you have an eSATA connection on your system you can use it instead of FW or USB (could be very helpful if you have a Canon camcorder !)
    2 - it's even faster than FW800 (SATA is either 1.5 or 3.0 Gbps vs. FW800's 800Mbps)
But keep in mind that it's the actual hard drive that ultimately limits the throughput, not the interface. Unfortunately some vendors are selling ATA100 drives in eSATA cabinets. It's always a good idea to dig for the unpublished specs before buying.
I have one of the LaCie Quadra drives and it's very nice, although I bought it because the price was better than the d2 Triple Interface drive at the time I purchased it. It has a pretty decent Samsung Spinpoint T-series SATA-2 drive inside, so some day when I get a Mac with an eSATA interface it will really scream.

  • This hard-drive compatible with T400?

I ran a hardware scan through lenovo tools and my Thinkpad T400 2764-CTO's hard drive failed the SMART Short Self test and the Surface Scan Test-2. That's pretty bad right? (Actually it has failed those 2 tests for the past month now)
If it is bad, I was thinking of getting this hard-drive to replace it http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Scorpio-2-5-Inch-Notebook/dp/B005DVJJWQ/ref=pd_cp_e_2  Anyone know if it would be compatible with my laptop?
    Thanks a lot!

I'm sure you were hoping for a simple answer, but the answer is "maybe". This is an "advanced format" drive, which means it has 4k sectors, instead of the traditional 512-byte sectors. If you are running an OS that is aware of AF drives (like windows 7 with SP1 installed), it will work if you build the drive with a tool that is compatible, like a recent version of acronis. Rescue and recovery or OEM recovery disks will not work.  Lenovo does not guarantee compatibility with any machine that was not originally sold with AF drives, like T420.

  • How do I make an NTFS external hard drive compatible with my Macbook Air?

I have bought an external hard drive with NTFS.  How do I transfer files to this drive from my Macbook Air, and write files on it? I also would like to use the hard drive for a pc as well so any suggested solutions that allows me to use across my mac and a pc would be greatly appreciated.

Never seen the term exFAT in a post previously - is that an enhanced version of FAT32?
Yes it is. Here's an abstract from this Microsoft KB page
The exFAT file system is the successor to FAT32 in the FAT family of file systems. The exFAT file system is a new file system format that addresses the growing needs of mobile personal storage on different operating systems. The exFAT file system handles large files, such as those that are used for media storage, and it enables seamless interoperability between desktop computers and devices, such as portable media devices. Because of this functionality, you can easily copy files between the desktop and external devices or between the desktop and other operating systems.

  • External hard drive compatible with mac

I recently purchased a Lacie external hd (the porsche design P´9220). Had some initial trouble with getting it up and running, had to switch primary partition hd to actually get the 1 TB storage amount. I did this on a pc in computer management, because I couldn´t figure out how to do this on my mac. Anyway, when I swiched the primary partition hard drive to the right one, I only had two options for formating, either NTFS or exFAT. I thought exFAT would work on mac, but turns out it doesn´t.. Is there any way I can format this hd to fat/ fat32 either on mac or pc?? The whole point of buying this hd was that I thought it would be compatible with BOTH mac and pc at the same time..
Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

    Nah:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two and size them to your preferences. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you created for Windows use, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the Format Type to MSDOS then click on the Erase button.
