Are Things Looking Grim For Developer2000?

Hi all D2K professionals,
There is a buzz in the S/W Scenario these days suggesting that D2K is down in a big way in the Mrket. Is this True?
I would like some comments from all experienced D2K Professional as well the Oracle Team (Both Forms and Reports Teams).

Arora,
Yes, what u said is true. But, i can see in the S/w market that the demand for D2k guys are quite less as compared to ASP,VB etc.. The projects also are quite less preferred in D2k than in VB or PB.
What do ya say ?

first of all, tell me, are you a d2k professional yourself. for how many years you have been working on oracle platform, both front-end and back-end. are you aware about all the products oracle is offering.
now, my views are something like below:
1. on the database side, no one can beat oracle for the coming years, and that can be till infinity.
2. on the front-end side, i have worked on vb, pb and d2k. and i have felt is that development of forms and reports with d2k is the easiest and the fastest.
3. on the application server side, no one but oracle is offering a single platform for c/s and web deployment. so, you dont have to go for a heterogenous platform.
for more details we can continue our discussion forum.
bye and be confident about oracle more than you are confident about yourself.

• Things looking grim for my PC.....

This morning when i booted up i noticed the system time hadn't been updated (or barely) since switching off last night. thinking nothing of it, I've been playing Tomb Raider Legend today and it's been goiing alright for a while, but then the system locks up, so I press restart - nout happens, and the fans spin widly with the hard disk like glowing full on, pressing reset doesn't help nor does the power button, so I use the switch on the PSU to turn off, and then turn back on again.
Restart, all is well and dandy again - try a game like UT2004, things looking fine, temps all look fine really, if just a little warmer due to it being quite warm in my room today. Then while at the desktop, messing about with the MSI temperature monitor, I think I double clicked it too fast and things locked a little - mouse was still fine but when I tried to open task manager to close the apps I probably just made things worse. Anyway, I press reset, and same thing as before happen - fans full on, hard disk light full on (usually it gives a very slow flicker) and I have to turn off at the back of the PSU again. This time though nothing works, it keeps doing the same thing so I turn it off, take the plug out and open up the case, slight dust but nothing to bad, anyway, I turned the rear fan up one notch (Antec Tri Cool) and put it all back together and started up and it worked again.
My PC Spec is:
AMD Athlon64 3800+ AM2
2GB DDR2 667 MHz RAM
160GB Maxtor IDE
Leadtek GeForce 7900GS
MSI K9N Neo-F 550 MCP
Onboard Realtek ALC883
Antec 380watt
Things I did today include formatting a partition on my drive that had previously unallocated space.... I doubt that is the problem though as It doesn't explain the problem when resetting.
Anyone have any ideas?
I'm guessing it could be anything right now, but I'm slightly suspecting the PSU.... with motherboard a close second, although I can't rule out hard drive or graphics card for causing issues, but it does seem like a PSU/mobo prob to me. I haven't really got anything I can start swapping for testing.
I was hoping it was just down it being a hot day, and with the rear fan turned up a bit more, maybe less hot air will be hovering near the PSU - CPU was only hitting 43C ish though. :/ Voltages reported by the MSI CoreCenter app seemed what they usually are, nothing different in that regards. The system losing the time though (i.e. not moving forward, clock staying at value it was when turned off) seems a bit odd too though, which made me think of the motherboard
However, It's just crashed again at the desktop for no reason - the bar at the top went greyed out, then the mouse pointer still moved, but nothing worked, then it started a long beep - I reset and it's back in window again :/
Then it crashed within two minutes of loading windows, at which point I turned it off and left it off.
When I think about it, i did get a crash 3 days ago while playing Tomb raider legend that resulted in an auto-restart, so maybe the signs were starting to show then.
Thanks in advanced

Cheers for that, i'll just add an update for today:
Ok, it just started behaving really slow in windows, I tried rebooting and it acted all weird on startup, nearly freezing, then the same problem as before with me having to reset the switch on the back.
I noticed on the one bootup I got, MSI CoreCenter app was saying CPU clockspeed 6335Mhz lol
I've just taken one stick of memory out from the second slot, and it's just booted :/
So maybe it is memory afterall. I'll be testing now to see what happens - I haven't got any case side panels on yet, just connected everything up quick and booted it.
I'll try a game and see what happens, if it doesn't crash after a while, it'll mean it's likely the memory. I opened CoD 2 and played that for a few minutes and that was working, straight after the issues, so hopefully it's just the memory. I can live with only 1GB.

• Is there a way of finding out what lists in sharepoint are being looked up for document templates etc

Hi,
I am currently in the middle of setting up SharePoint sites and have come across many lists that have not been updated for a while. I am wondering is there a way of finding out what lists are being used and what lists aren't being used for example I would
like to find out if a list is being used for a look up.

I don't think there any such option available OOTB, however you can use PowerShell to get such information e.g.
$web = Get-SPWeb http://localhost
$f = $web.Lists["Contact"].Fields["Customer"]
$f.ListsFieldUsedIn()
$web.Dispose()
Check this link: http://sharepoint.stackexchange.com/questions/45574/is-a-list-being-used-as-a-lookup-for-some-web-part-in-the-site-collection

Hello All...
Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.
Thanks!

Thank you for the replies. Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems. I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work. I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic. When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones. This actually helped. I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems. I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac. I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed. Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

• Purchacing a s/h early 2008 MP - things to look out for?

Hi guys, Ive been offered a early 2008 MP at what i would consider to be a reasonable price. It is the 2 x 2.8 quad core model. Currently it has 6gb (not apple) ram & I'll be getting it with the original HD.
Not sure about any other options at this stage.
Just wondering if there are any specific things I need to be aware of with this model & to look out for. I have the serial number of the machine if that's relevant.
This would be my first MP - i have had macs for years but never MPs.
Any advice would be appreciated
cheers

• Buying a used iMac G5, tips and things to look out for?

What tips could you guys give me on when looking for a used iMac G5? I like the 20" models specifically and it seems the models are all over 1.6GHz so the speeds are fine.
I currently own a G4 1.67 PowerBook and did a bit of reading up on that before I bought it, seeing what things to look out for what things turned faulty after a while and such. Such as the logic board and the 1 RAM slot going faulty on a few models, recalled batteries, which helped a lot in buying a used one.
I'm looking for a new desktop but can't afford to fork out over 1 grand for the new iMac's and the speed of my PowerBook is enough for my usual browsing and processing and few photos. So please don't bother telling me to buy a new one cos new is always best, I don't mind spending reasonably less and having a decent machine still - 1.67 15" PowerBook has proved well :P

Don't buy a new intel. buy a refurbished one from Apple. The PPC architecture is on its way out, few programs are being written for it, and most new applications are only for intel. I realize that even a refurb might cost a bit more than you planned to spend, but it will be worth it down the road.
Look in the [Apple Store|http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac?mco=MTE3NjY], the choice changes daily, so just keep you eye open for the one you want and snap it up. And get Apple Care as well.
Let us know what you ended up with please,

The error is a very basic one - the sapmsPRD service is not known. You will have to go to <NT_ROOT>\system32\drivers\etc and add the entry sapmsPRD 3600 to this file.
This is basically telling the requester at what port to look for the message server.

Hi
You should make a mapping for the service sapmsPRD in your /etc/services file (On Windows: C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32DRIVERSETCservices). If your instance number is 00 you will have to add the following entry:
sapmsPRD 3600/tcp
Good luck!

• What are the ideal specs for a DigiBeta master tape when authoring a "widescreen anamorphic" 16:9 SD DVD (original aspect ratio is 14:9)?

I just received the masters for a new SD DVD. I would like to author a "widescreen anamorphic" SD DVD horizontally squeezed widescreen image stored in a standard 4:3 aspect ratio DVD image frame. (On 4:3 displays, mattes should preserve the original aspect ratio. On 16:9 displays the image will fill the screen at the highest possible resolution.)
Below I've listed the specs of the Digi Beta master tapes the producers have sent to me for digitizing. I'd like to know this: What are the ideal specs for a DigiBeta master tape when authoring a widescreen anamorphic SD DVD, using material with an original aspect ratio of 14:9?
I've also listed my guesses below. Please let me know if my guesses are right. If not, please suggest alternatives (and if possible explain why.)
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS OF EXISTING MASTER:
Tape: DigiBeta
Original Aspect Ratio: 1.55 (14:9)
Vid Rate: 29.97 fps
Pixel Aspect: NTSC - CCIR 601
Frame Size: 720 x 480
Anamorphic: Full-Height Anamorphic (16:9 image displayed in letterboxed, non-distored 4:3)
Display Format: 4:3 Letterbox
MY GUESS AT IDEAL TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS (for a DigiBeta, that is):
Tape: DigiBeta
Original Aspect Ratio: 1.55 (14:9)
Vid Rate: 29.97 fps
Pixel Aspect: Square
Frame Size: 720 x 540
Anamorphic: YES
Display Format: 16:9 Anamorphic (horizontally squeezed widescreen image)
Please feel free to ask for clarification or further information you need to answer my question.
Thank you so much in advance for your help!
Best, Noetical.
BTW, I can't wait for the day when everything has gone digital and we get digital intermediates instead of tapes to digitize!

Hi Nick...thanks for taking the time to reply to my question.
Nick Holmes wrote:
What you have there is a mess.
NTSC pixels are never square.
NTSC is 720x486, even when it is Anamorphic.
You shouldn't be using an already letterboxed master to make an Anamorphic version. Get the master that was made before the letterboxing stage.
When you make an Anamorphic DVD it should display as 16:9 full screen automatically on widescreen TVs.
The same DVD will automatically letterbox on 4:3 TVs.
Um yeah...duh. That's exactly what I was trying to explain in the preface of my question. I'm sorry if I didn't make it clear...all these things you mention are the reasons I'm putting together a list of the technical specs of the DigiBeta I need so I can have them send that instead of the stupid letterboxed version.
Look, I'm sending this request to some intern at their offices in England, asking for a master with which I can make an Anamorphic DVD. They already sent me this master, which as you and I both agree is an idiotic asset to use for these purposes. As such, I was hoping for advice on a more precise way of requesting the master that I need than asking for "the master that was made before the letterboxing stage." Upon reflection, perhaps I'll just do that. If you or anyone else has a suggestion about something I should add to my request that would improve the odds of them sending the tape I need, please repond. Thank you!
BTW, It's been a long time since anyone has responded to something I've written or said as though I'm an idiot. I remember now that I don't really like it. (Moving along...)

• Making 4:3 look good for both 4:3 and 16:9 screens

Hi,
Up until this point I have lived my life in a pleasant 4:3 world. I shot 4:3 footage, edited 4:3 in FCP, sent 4:3 to DVDSP, checked my work on a 4:3 television, and mailed 4:3 DVDs to my customers.
My understanding from playing around with a friend's 16:9 TV, is that the TV owner could push a button to view 4:3 content with bars on the right and left (I think from other contexts this must be called pillarboxing).
Then I brought my baby's videos to my parents' house.
They say the camera adds 10 lbs -- how about 50! I guess if all consumers got used to watching television this way, it would be a huge win for the anti-anorexia people.
My parents could see nothing wrong with the video that was being stretched out to fit their 16:9 television. They watch all their movies this way. They didn't want me to fiddle with the remote because, "they might not be able to get it back the way it was."
I've read the thread "Need help on 16:9" very carefully.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=510426&tstart=0
Unfortunately, it's still a bit too far over my head. From reading that thread, I've come to understand that "letterboxing" is the black bars put above and below 16:9 footage when it is displayed on a 4:3 screen. "Pillarboxing" is adding black bars to the right and left of 4:3 footage so that it displays with the correct aspect ratio on a 16:9 screen.
Unfortunately the term "anamorphic" in the various contexts is lost on me. I know it's a special lens that you use to shoot widescreen footage on 35mm film, but what it means in the DVD context is a bit lost on me.
I want to know:
1. Is it possible to take my 4:3 footage and process it somehow in FCP and DVDSP to make DVDs that will "just work" on both 4:3 televisions and widescreen TVs? That is, I want the image to have the correct aspect ratio on both boxes without the user having to do anything to their TV. (I assume this would mean displaying as-is on 4:3 TV's and pillarboxing automatically on 16:9 TVs)
2. If it is possible, can someone point me to some references on how to accomplish this? Or at least some references that would help me learn enough to choose the right workflow to do this?
Doing a "search" or a "Google Search" for 16:9 tutorial, leads to more hits than is useful and lots of vendors trying to sell me products.
I'm not against buying & reading a book or tutorial, but there is so much out there that I need a push in the right direction first.
3. Looking at the other thread my impression is that if I want to do this, I'd have to find some way to make FCP add the black bars to pillarbox my 4:3 data, then tell DVDSP I've got 16:9 footage. I have no idea how to actually accomplish this (settings, etc.) however.
Whew! And all this is just SD stuff I believe. I still haven't touched HD, but I believe those 16:9 TV's are made for HD but will still display my SD DVDs. Please correct me if I'm wrong about that.
Thanks so much! These forums have been so helpful. Even though I only occasionally post I read many answers to questions I've had that other people have too.

Hi,
Thank you very much for the reply. Once I'm finished I'll post all my notes so others can benefit. Right now though, I've been having problems fighting compressor all day. I think I broke my computer
I'm currently downloading an update, but that's not going to finish for the next 6 hrs. (I have a very slow network connection, and I tend to only update my programs between projects unless I run into a serious issue.)
Here are the issues I've had and some of the solutions I've found:
* = I found a solution
*1. Originally my compressor .m2v file would not import into DVDSP -- DVDSP would unexpectedly quit every time I even clicked on the file, I didn't even click "import" and it would quit. I renamed my file to no avail (it had a '/' in it, compressor's default file naming turned 16:9 to 16/9). I read on the DVDSP forum that the way around this was to drag my file directly into DVDSP. That worked.
2. I accidently told FCP to "render all" in that 16:9 timeline before sending it to compressor. I did it because I wanted to see how things looked before sending to compressor. Unfortunately, I don't know how to tell FCP to "un-render" the files. Is there a way to do this? I seem to recall that there weren't any files in on FCP's scratch disk when I looked, but I can't check right now (see #4) Problem #2 may be the cause of problem #3, but I can't check that until later either.
3. The disk I created using the compressor-rendered-from-FCP files appeared to have interlace issues. i.e. during times of quick, high-contrast horizontal motion, there were every-other-line streaks left behind. The problem is most easily noticed on computer monitors. There is a small amount of it on the original DVD, but not nearly as much as in the DVD created with compressor. Do you have any recommendations for settings, or is this potentially caused by my rendering in FCP first before going to compressor?
4. The big issue: After using compressor, finder now quits when I click on 2 of my 4 disk drives. (I saved .m2v files on two different disks due to the DVDSP problems in #1. I thought perhaps the first time my file itself was corrupted.) I did searches for this issue and learned that many people have it, and the solution seems to be to right-click on the offending file and choose open with -> other -> quicktime, check the box for all files of this type. Unfortunately, I can't even get finder to get that far.
I tried another solution using one of my disks that still works, I re-named a .mov file to .m2v, and then told that one to open with -> other -> quicktime, check the box for all files of that type. Unfortunately that didn't appear to work as Disk 1 and Disk 4 still cause finder to quit and re-start itself. (Various iterations of reboot, trash finder.plist, etc. thrown in for good measure.)
I am currently downloading these patches:
Apple Qmaster Update 2.0.1
Cinema Tools Update 3.0.3
Compressor Update 2.0.1
Pro Applications Update 2005-02 1.0
Soundtrack Pro Update 1.0.3
I don't even know how many of those I really need. I already have FCP 5.0.4 and DVDSP 4.0.3. That should finish sometime tomorrow, but if the patches don't work I could use some advice. I guess I could go into the Unix side of things and manually delete all the .m2v files, but I've been hesitant to do that because they took so long to create in the first place.
Is this finder/compressor/DVDSP problem a known issue that is fixed with some of the above patches?
Thanks again,

• Iphotos Package Contents: What are all these folders for? Is it too large to back up in the cloud?

Dear experts, I am quite a newbie when it comes to understanding the Mac filing system, as I originally came from the PC world. There's lots of things I dont understand in the iMac file viewer and how to organise and backup my photos is an important issue for me.
I know that if I want to look at the original photo files on my iMac, I can right-click on users/myname/pictures and select "Show Package Contents".
Question 1 - What are all these folders for?
Please can someone explain what is the difference between all the folders I see? Some of them seem to be exact duplicates of the others e.g. Masters, Modified and Originals all seem to have the same content. So here is a list of folders that I see. What is in them?, or what is their purpose?
Data
Data.noindex
Modified
Originals
Apple TV Photo Cache
Attachments
Auto Import
Backup
Caches
Contents
Database
iLifeShared
iPod Photo Cache
Masters
Previews
ProjectCache
Thumbnails
Question 2 - Which photo folder should I back-up?
If I want to keep a physical backup of my photos, which of the above folders should I copy to an external hard drive? (I use Get Backup to automatically copy all important new or changed files to an external drive)
Question 3 - Using the cloud: What is the best way to backup my large photo library in the cloud safely?
I would like to have some kind of safe backup in the cloud for my photos. However the size of the iphoto library is huge at 165GB. Even the Masters folder is huge. It is 130GB. Is it possible to back up files of this size in the cloud? I have a couple of services called photo streaming and Dropbox, but they don't seem to be able to handle this kind of size. Photo streaming only works with 1000 photos (as far as I can tell), and my Dropbox probably has a limit too. I guess it's about 5GB. I am already using about 3GB of my Dropbox space for other files. I would consider both paid and free solutions.
Many thanks to all the experts for your help!

know that if I want to look at the original photo files on my iMac, I can right-click on users/myname/pictures and select "Show Package Contents".
Don't do that. That's like opening the hood of your car and trying to figure out what all the different bits and peices are and which you can yank out and dispose of. Simply, there are no user-serviceable parts in here.
So, your Question 2:
You back up the iPhoto Library as a single unit.
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
Your question 3:
There is no good back up to the Cloud. There are a couple of reasons for this. One is that the datasets are so large and the cloud services shapre their download speeds. This means restoring can take days to complete. Then, and this is the big problem, the iPhoto Library needs to sit on a disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Bluntly, no servers online are formatted appropriately, and if the Library is written to - by an incremental back up, for instance - there is a very high likelihood that the library will be corrupted.
Your Question 1:
The Library you're describing there sounds like one that has been updated a few times. Not everything you list there is a folder. Some will be aliases.
The Data folders hold thumbnails.
The Masters and Originals folders hold the files as imported from the camera
The Previews hold the versions of the edited photos that are accessed via the Sharing mechanism.
I think if you look losely that you'll notice that one of the Data folders and one of either the Masters or the Originals folders is actually an alias.
Everything else is a database or cache file of some form. All are required for iPhoto to work.

• Maximize work area in Photoshop CS4 for Mac

I just re-installed eveything due to the Snow Leopard incedent.
Before, I used to be able to open a psd file or any file for that matter with photoshop and the entire screen was used. Now it opens to the size of the file I am opening. Is there a way to set it to defualt when I open a new file that it is in full screen mode?
Attached is a screen shot of how it looks when I open a file:
Foregive the incorrect shot, the tools menu is gone due to using the screen capture feature in my Dashboard. But i would like to open the file and have it fill my monitor instead of just the size of the file. I can set it to open full screen but I have to do it manually. I would like this to be default.
If anyone has an idea of what i'm trying to doi, please let me know!
Thanks,
Michael Sigouin

One last thing . . .
I am using two monitors. My secondary monitor has all my tools as far as layer panels, colors, swatches etc...
The main monitor has just the "artwork" area and main tools for the application.
Ok, I think I know what I want it to do. I would like the file to open to "Full Screen Mode with Menu Bar". Also, when I open another file, have them tabbed at the top.
Thanks again!
