Are upgrades worth it?

I am preparing to install 1 gig of RAM and hoping to get iLife 07 (when it comes out) in my Flat Panel iMac 800 running OS 10.4.7, and I noticed on these discussions some information on the graphics card. My graphics card does not support Core Image and the graphics card cannot be replaced. Is it worth the upgrade to do video editing (I also use Final Cut Express 2) or should I save the $200 for memory toward a newer iMac?

Tim, it is good that you are asking these questions now. As Ian mentions it is always a balancing act where you must weigh the cost of upgrades and their long term value.
You are looking at $200 in RAM, plus $79 for iLife and $129 for Leopard - over $400 in upgrades to an older machine. If you plan to replace that unit any time soon, then it would seem to not be worth it. If you are going to hold onto that baby until it gives up the ghost or if someone else in the house can make use of it when you do replace it, then it might be worth it.
Like Ian, if it were my money I would probably save the money towards a new Mac. You can get a mini for not much more than the upgrades you have in mind - just as a monitor.
it is entirely up to you but you are reaching that point that it is no longer worth it to make any upgrades. If you do choose to add RAM and such, this might be the last upgrade you will make. I would then max out the RAM and leave it at that.

I have been hunting the net for benchmarks comparing the Santa Rosa MB's with 2GB vs. 4GB. Can't find anything worth a crap. Does anyone know where I can find such data??? I don't think you'll find benchmarks for that. If you use less than 2gb ram then the benchmarks will be identical. I you use more than 2gb then 4gb will be faster because ram is faster than a hard drive for imputting and outputting data. It's completely dependent on how much ram you use.
the only way to tell if you need ram is to use activity monitor (applications/utilities) - or istat menus (you can download it from islayer.com I think) and then look at ram usage. In particular look at the number of pages ins/pages out. If the pages out are more than about 10% of the pages in, then you are running out of ram and the computer is using the hard drive as extra ram. If less than 10% then you're not using up all the ram.
More ram doesn't speed up a computer, it just allows it to do more work simultaneously.
Ram is really cheap though. Crucial.com had a 2gb chip for $99 which is very good.

Thank you very much for your answer! I have 2 Apple ID, and I have tried both of them and the problem continues. I founf several peolpe with the same problem in apple communities foruns and that really seems that there is some problem. I addded the links for 2 of those discussions.

First let me disabuse of a misconception: All Adobe upgrades are FULL installers. Whether you buy them as upgrades or new versions does not make an iota of difference. The upgrade installers do not need to find a prior version installed, they just prompt you for the old serial number as well as the old one, and they do not rely on the old version in the least.
Second, the time to uninstall an older version is BEFORE upgrading to a newer one. Otherwise, the uninstaller from the older versions will mess up with your new install. There are a gazillion files that are named the same and in the same locations as the new one.
Your best bet now is to uninstall ALL the Photoshop versions you have installed, including the newest one, one by one, then run the Adobe CS Cleaner Tool, then run Repair Permissions from Apple's Desk Utility, and finally re-install the latest version.
The other alternative, if your boot HD is large enough (very doubtful in case of a laptop like a Mac Book), is to leave all versions on it.

My guess is you want to upgrade HR8.3 to 9.2 - and that is not one jump upgrade. You will need to go HRMS 83 to 90
(PeopleSoft Enterprise HRMS 8.3x to 9.0 Upgrade (Doc ID 747333.1) and then 90 to 92 (PeopleSoft Human Capital Management 9.0 to 9.2 Upgrade Home Page (Doc ID 1536087.1)
Each these MOS pages contains the Demo to Demo Compare Reports that show the data structures changes between the releases.

Before you even release the software into the test environment, you must perform unit testing. Can every transaction that is used by your company be executed? Does every userexit/enhancement still perform the same task? Does every custom report work the same? All interfaces passing the proper data?
Merely testing the software itself will not give your company any assurance that it will support your business after you go live with it, so after unit testing comes integration testing and user acceptance testing. You must interview Key business users, and from their input you must develop and execute tests for 'business processes'. For example, one common business scenario (which contains many business processes), Order to Cash: Check whether your upgraded systems supports your ability to receive and enter an order, plan the parts, obtain the RM, build the parts ship the order, and book the cash. Or, another Scenario, Procure to Pay: Check if you can plan RM parts, create/release PR, create PO, send PO to Vendor, receive PO in stock, pay invoice, close month for accounting purposes.
These are two major business scenarios in most companies that use ERP. There are hundreds more that can be tested, If you work for a company that cannot afford to have any disruption in their business, then all activities that are normally done by any business user should be tested.
On the SCM side, during an ERP update, you have a smaller task (SAP usually does a good job with backward compatibility with their own modules). BW extractors must be tested. All integration models must be tested. All userexits must be tested. Publishing results/releasing results to ERP must be tested. The list goes on and on depending upon which SCM modules you have implemented.

Unfortunately, you cannot do very much with your phone unless you get assistance from the previous owner, they should either provide you with the password to unlock it or remove their account from the phone entirely remotely through iCloud.com > Find My Phone.

I am on my third s4 in three weeks because of overheating. The first fried itself into oblivion. The second overheated, and would shut down. The current one is 48 hours old, overheated 5+ times on my way home from work after having it for 24 hours...and fried the sim card reader.
I had a loaner S3...24 hours after having it: boot loop.
The entire S3/S4/S5 line is defective. Verizon is insane for letting their reputation turn to sh!t because they are ignoring it, and insist on replacing like for like (S4 for S4), and enraging their customers. I have BEGGED every day for TWO WEEKS for a replacement that is NOT another S4.

HEY APPLE! What are upgrade policy plans for new systems shipping with 10.4

I just ordered a brand new Xserver, thinking that there would be some policy in place for brand new computers shipping with 10.4, to get the new version of OSX Leopard Server (without having to buy a retail copy) - however to my surprise, there is nothing currently in place.
Will there be an upgrade policy soon for users who have just ordered new computers, currently shipping with 10.4??? Or should we return recently ordered items, and stop ordering new systems until they start shipping with 10.5?

Assumptions such as this one are often a recipe for disappointment and/or for extra expenses; I've certainly learned to be cautious with these.
In this case, there is a policy that has been in place (AFAIK) since the Leopard announcement.

Those folks outside the Leopard upgrade window that are upgrading to Leopard (and that don't have a separately-purchased Right-to-Upgrade) will be purchasing and ordering the upgrade. You may end up purchasing an iLife upgrade, too — if you're using it, and not already at the current release — as Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server upgrades apparently do not include an iLife upgrade.

I am having the exact same problem with trying to sync my iPad with my computer. To make a long story short, I had to reinstall Windows for my computer and therefore had to reinstall itunes.
I have done back ups in the past for my ipod touch and other ipods with no problems, but unfortunately I have never been able to back up my iPad. During a sync, the iPad would always disconnect from my computer and it would never finish. it would say the connection was lost, but nothing is wrong with the connection.
So now I have over 100 apps and thousands of pictures that I am afraid will be deleted if I run the sync in itunes. I have tried to transfer purchases and it goes through the list of apps, but nothing is ever transferred.
Any help would be appreciated. I am not interested in jailbreaking my iPad to solve this problem. There should be a fix for this and I want to upgrade to ios 4.3 as the original poster. Please help

Are processor upgrades worth it

im using logic 6.3 on os9.1. it runs great, very stable and i have enuf FX and virtuals to work with. im getting deeper mixing and am nearing the max point for my 500 dual processor. im seeking feedback about would it really help my situation to upgrade my processor within my os 9.1 or possible 9.2 limits (self emposed limits.. i dont want to take THIS machine to OSX). i was told a faster processor wouldnt increase my same bus speed so it wouldnt make much difference. what do u guys think. upgrade or not? ....and if so do u have recommendations on which upgrades would be the best for me.

I have upgraded processors in 2 macs in the past and both times I have been happy with the improvement, but with your machine being what it is, I would really consider upgrading to a better secondhand mac unless the upgrade is dirt cheap. Check out what you can find in your area and you may be surprised how cheaply you can upgrade your machine to double or more your current limits. I upgraded the processor in my G3 350 for a G3 450 in 2002, and late last year I bought a secondhand DP 1.25 for about 3 times the cost of the original upgrade chip.
