Are we Beta testing the N97 for Nokia?

Because if i was given this as a beta release i would have told them what i thought, the current launch version on the N97 with V10 firmware is barely an Alpha release, this phone was a rush job thrown out on the market to coincide with the launch of the iphone 3Gs.
This is my fourth N series, N80, N95, N95 8gb (the best N series yet), and now this N97 what should be Nokia's flagship, but being stripped of apps and filled with Trial versions to please the accountants at Nokia.
Day one and it locked up twice, corrupted my contacts when synced with OVI, and ran down to less than 4mb on the C drive, day 2 i found the GPS was not working, it was a joke, walking down the road under a clear sky and it could not hold a signal lock, driving was worse barely holding a signal for a few seconds and as for sitting spinning it round for an age to get the compass to work........forget it id rather be lost than look like a **bleep**.
Deleting apps and reinstalling them on the mass memory frees up some space, but why should we have to do this, the whole phone is badly thought out and configured.
Soon after the stylus supplied with the phone and attached to the phones only tie point scratched my screen, what was wrong with a rear cover with a bump and a thin PDA style stylus, no not good enough for Nokia, a fat thing on a string will do for them.
New Firmware release 4 days after UK launch and still not available to most users as it has not been network approved yet, 3 network say its Nokia's job and they are delaying things, Nokia say its the networks delay. Come on if it was needed that quickly why leave most of your customers waiting, or just get to work on a layered OS with a standardised core with a network layer, so everyone can have the updated without waiting.
4 weeks in on this phone, i too have the scratched camera lens, still No working GPS, and having some good negotiations with Three to try to reverse the contact upgrade, as i don't think another N97 will last any longer than this one.
I see Nokia spending Millions on punting the N97, TV, Billboards, Net adds, why push so hard on what is a sub standard product, could you imagine Joe public trying to free off some memory by moving apps, tell the care centres to brace themselves the N97 flood will be coming their way.
What next, well if 3 don't cancel the upgrade, then Nokia will have to fix my phone again and again and again untill it works as advertised, in the mean time i am off to get in touch with watchdog so they can let Joe Public know what to expect from an N97.

I don't believe we're beta testing the N97 for Nokia. Beta testing suggests it is in a state prior to production. Nokia's track record (at least to me) seems that leading edge phones never reach a stable plateau.
What I believe happens is the phone is released and remains unstable until they sort of perfect the platform, then a new handset is released bringing a whole new world of bugs and problems and so the cycle continues.
By the time the phone is suitable for every day use it is, by today's technological stance, ancient and the damage has already been done to the reputation.
S40 phones seem to fare much better, mainly because it is much more widely used within Nokia. S60 is up against some fine competition from vendors who will rush fixes out.. Nokia only ever seems to rush phones out. It isn't the same and it shows (see their forcast for the next 6 months)
I honestly would not be surprised if this flagship phone limps on in a partially functional state until it is superceeded by a budget blackberry clone.
Sad? Very! Am I being cynical, or telling it like it is.
I'd be real interested to know if any exec at Nokia used the N97 in the weeks before it was released.. Not that I'm a fan, but we all know Stevie J used an iphone long before it was released.. I kind of get the impression they must all use very basic "corporate" s40 handsets and assume their flagship product must be of the same calibre.
Next release, why not give 100 people N97 for testing, real testing.  It seems Nokias quality assurance team is out of touch with what a $700 handset demands.. ooooh, I gasp in awe at your 30 MB of free capactity when you remove ALL the applications you can. (It's like having a 2TB hard drive in a computer and continuing to boot from a floppy)
I appreciate there are product time lines to meet, but if Nokia were aiming to compete with the likes of the pre, iphone and the various android handsets (not even mentioning windows mobile) rushing out a phone like this was very wide of the mark. Concept wise, the N97 is a great design.. the implementation of both the hardware and software just isn't going to cut it in todays market..
(but this is what they want? you'll get bored with the handset and buy a replacement! yeay!)

  • How good is the N97 for you to replace your multip...

Hi, a quick question for anyone who has an N97 and using it for more than communication.
I have had a Nokia of all types (6310i, N71, 6680 etc) for almost 10 years and two weeks ago, I decided to upgrade to the N97 (cost: Euro269 with Vodafone Ireland,12 month contract).
The main reason I got my N97 was to cut down on the tech clutter (Plugs, data cables and memory devices) I had for misc. media playback. I had an PSP (video playback, via 16GB MSProDuo), Ipod (music for walking & in-car audio via Belkin FM transmitter) and an N95 8GB (phone calls). Yes, I could have gotten the Iphone but the change over to O2 and the min. euro45/month fee on an 18 month contract was not worth the hassle involved.
What I wanted was, ideally, one device for all three needs: audio, video and communications.
Two weeks after getting the N97, I'm happy that it has solved two of the three requirements: Video playback & communications) but audio playback is still clunky to use & difficult to edit.
-The video: as I mentioned in another posting, porting over an .avi video file is still clumsy (I'm using Windows 7, maybe compatibility issues?). I've been using with 100% transfer/playback success -handbrake (single file) and AVS (Multiple files) to convert to .MPEG4 and file manager to drop the Mpeg4 file into "Video" folder. It's multiple steps instead of the seamless process promised by PC SUITE/OVI but, hey, it works for me!
-Audio: a huge pain to create a simple playlist for walking. I know the 2.0 firmware promised in late Oct. looks great (from the video preview http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_iajkv2YE8) but trying to simply find a song is tedious in a what should have been an intuitive touch screen interface. Using the selection menu is like using Win 3.11 after using Win 7 -slow, clumsy & not designed for a smart phone. Also, the "find album art" in Nokia Music is slow & inaccurate. I do like the FM Transmitter feature and the little I have used so far in car, has been seamless to setup and a snap to use.
-Communication: This is the first touch screen phone I have had and while it has taken time to make the mental shift from hitting physical keys, I'm happy with the handset's performance. Being blunt, I really hope the firmware upgrade addresses the N97's buggy OS. I have had to hard reset twice (change all, and I mean all "Save To" setting -messages, email, cache etc, to "Mass Memory" not "Phone memory" as this seems to have stopped cold the "memory full" warnings I was getting). Also, I'm finding the camera much better with the N97 Vs the N95 8GB and the free app. PhotoBrowser (http://betalabs.nokia.com/betas/view/nokia-photo-browser) is simply amazing to use as an indexing tool. If you want to impress family with the phones functions, take a photo of them and open up PhotoBrowser for the wow! impact.
Sorry if this is long winded but while I have read a lot of postings on the site for specific issues, just wondering how anyone in general is finding using the handset/computer for day to day media use? Personally while the battery life demands I have a charger with me always, I really like having a single device that does two of the three functions I was looking for in a single unit.

We use a doc template to create a purchased part spec document and then save them as pdf formatted files.  These part spec documents are also appended with the datasheets for these purchased parts.  When we want to update/revise the document, is there a method, using Acrobat, to make those updates to the pdf, or must we go back to the doc template and basically generate a new document?
Also, our resulting pdf documents aren't searchable.  How can we generate pdf documents that are searchable?  I may want to search for a part value or name within the body of these pdf documents, but currently can't do that...very inconvenient.
    Can you assist?

Not totally sure about the search issue. A lot depends on how you created the PDF and what is in the datasheets you attached (like are they graphics?). The doc portion should be searchable as long as you used print to the Adobe PDF printer or PDF Maker. For your use, it may be that the print is adequate. However, the result should be searchable (unless maybe you had a form with filled in fields and created the PDF with PDF Maker. I think the form data may be retained in form fields and the fields are not searchable. In that case, a print might be a better procedure. (it would help to know the versions of WORD and Acrobat as well as the exact process you used to create the PDF.)
If the appended data sheets do not change, then you might try opening the original PDF and then using Replace Pages to replace the file created from the DOC file.

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":
*do not clear the Site Preferences
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" > Settings
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/remove-browsing-search-and-download-history
Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.
If you have software like Advanced SystemCare (Surfing Protection feature) that might reset some files to older versions to protect these files against changes then check the settings or uninstall this software.

  • Blackberry Connect for the N97? (Nokia Messaging ...

DAVISFIELDS, VANDELAY, JEREMIAHN, DEAN98 ARE YOU LISTENING?
I know Nokia was pushing BlackBerry Connect for some E Series devices last year.  Are they going to work with RIM to get this to the N97?  The current solution of having to open three different programs for Call Log, Email traffic, and SMS Traffic blows. I can't get HTML views of exchange mail?  What century is this?
If I want HTML views of any email, I have to download a second program called "Nokia Messaging" that apparently doesn't conflict with the "Nokia Messaging" that's installed on the phone already?    I'm still limited to html views only of my popular webmail provider accounts.
Tech support (even Tier 2) at nokia doesn't even know what nokia messaging is.  Private Messaging people in the Messaging team in the forums here doesn't work.  I think it's time to recognize that the N97 and support that goes with it is half baked and it's time to sell my N97.  Just to show there are no hard feelings, here's the constructive part of my criticism.
There should be a single view of all email traffic, sms traffic, and call logs.  I should be able to go into this single view, and see at:
    4:00pm I called Bill Rogers
4:05 I received an email on my gmail account from John Holmes
4:09 I sent an SMS to Michael Chong
4:20 I Received an SMS from Cheech Marin
    4:27 I got a call from Chuck D
4:58 I sent a message to Michael Gasol from my exchange account
5:01 I sent a gmail message to [email protected]
The list should be sorted by date by default but have other sortable and search entries. This doesn't take into account that the Blackberry Connect software integrates seamlessly with their BBM (IM) client, so I also see instant messages in the list too.
Tech support at Nokia should know how to use their FLAGSHIP model. Maybe a training course on the available products?
Hire a development and UI manager for the messaging interface.  The N97 is difficult to navigate at best and having such a terrible (let me repeat that, TERRIBLE) interface, makes it likely that end users think their phone is malfunctioning. A trained monkey could figure out not to ship your messaging product until it worked better.
Oh yeah, and the message store on the N97?  If I plug my N97 into my USB port as a mass storage device, my messages get pushed onto the main memory where there is practically no storage! Now I have an extra two inboxes (for exchange and SMS) that I need to check once I've unplugged my phone.  And if you have a message in  your inbox while in landscape mode and the envelope indicator is on the upper left hand corner next to the clock, you can't press on the envelope to go to the new message.  It works in portrait just fine, and when in the home screen the envelope is on the upper right and works.
Nokia, I think it's time I make a youtube video of why your N97 messaging interface sucks so hard.  I think the largest reason I'm writing this is because I haven't gotten a response from 3 or 4 of the Nokia employees in the messaging team that I've tried to message in here.
Yeah, I'd appreciate a response.  Otherwise, I think I've reached the tipping point where I sell this garbage, start slagging Nokia and dragging their names through online mud.

  • Thanks for Beta testing the iPhone. Let me know when you're happy with it.

I am so happy that Fresno was sold out of iPhones the day I went to buy one. Since then, I have been reading about all the problems the phones are having, and I'm glad I didn't get one. I am a loyal Mac user and look forward to owning an iPhone. I'm just glad there are people like you willing to beta test for Apple, and help them work out all the bugs. When you can hear the phone, visit flash websites, watch internet movies, and use a yahoo account successfully, sign me up. Until then, thanks for you hard work and patience.

You are 100% correct in calling this a Beta version.
I was a Q/A engineer for Intuit and Srint gave us
phone to Beta test for them when they first came out.
I have to say it was hard to find a funtion with a
"bug" in it. Wheras it is hard to find a feature in
the I-Phone that is bug free. I would have to say the
Weather feature works well... Its those other seldom
used features like the phone, calendar, contacts, and
it web are still in step one beta!! And foget aobut
support... I am still waiting on a return call from
    engineering for 5 days now.
Why would Sprint/Intuit give you the iPhone to test? It isn't even on their network much less a CDMA phone.

  • What happens when the beta test of iCloud for iWork is over?

They asked me to participate in a beta test which stores iWork in the cloud. Not 100% on all the specifics but I was wondering/worried if when the trail is over will all my documents saved there be lost?

Good question, as soon as Apple announces anything we ll find out. I do have some documents there as well.
Probably I should back them up ASAP, just in case.

  • Beta test: PLUS Plugin for Lightroom. Protect your images.

Many of you on this forum are PLUS members or have contributed to the development of the PLUS standards. We are inviting all forum members to particpate in a beta test of a new Lightroom plugin developed by Timothy Armes that will allow Lightroom users to inject PLUS license statements into images on export. Companies around the world are building PLUS into their DAM systems, allowing them to ingest your rights information upon receiving your files, and to use automation to better manage images and to avoid infringement.
For those unfamiliar with PLUS, the PLUS Coalition is an international collaboration between all industries involved in creating, distributing, using and preserving images. Spanning 30 countries, PLUS is the largest photography-related organization, representing the interests of both owners and users. The Coalition has developed the Picture Licensing Universal System, an integrated system of standards approved by all industries, to simplify and facilitate the communication and management of image rights.

Please take note that update availability depends on existing Nokia device firmware version, country, and operator. Normally, the roll -out will be throttled so you just really have to wait.
