Are widgets no longer part of Mavericks ?

Not only can I not enjoy my RSS screensavers anymore, but I've just discovered, upon finding my default translation widget is incorrect, I cannot download widgets anymore. Mavericks is one disappointment after another. What are my alternatives ? Are widgets being phased out for the app store ? I miss Mr. Jobs...

I went to the Apple site widgets page, found a widget called, "Translate," and downloaded it (https://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/travel/translate_jeroenwielandt.html). Upon opening it from my downloads folder, I get the prompt, " 'Translate' can't be opened because it is from an inidentified developer. Your security preferences allow installation of only apps from the Mac App Store and identified developers,"
Am I stuck finding this type of program as an app ? I enjoy the ease of switching between my widgets and my homescreen, but now that Mavericks has added... for lack of a better word than 'junk,' I'll say Mavericks has added more 'options,' I'll just have to purchase and add to my clutter a translation app from the store and switch between using my widgets page, my homescreen and second, third and fourth desktops that keep appearing. It's quite disappointing if this is my option.

In general theory, one now has the Edit button for their posts, until someone/anyone Replies to it. I've had Edit available for weeks, as opposed to the old forum's ~ 30 mins.
That, however, is in theory. I've posted, and immediately seen something that needed editing, only to find NO Replies, yet the Edit button is no longer available, only seconds later. Still, in that same thread, I'd have the Edit button from older posts, to which there had also been no Replies even after several days/weeks. Found one that had to be over a month old, and Edit was still there.
Do not know the why/how of this behavior. At first, I thought that maybe there WAS a Reply, that "ate" my Edit button, but had not Refreshed on my screen. Refresh still showed no Replies, just no Edit either. In those cases, I just Reply and mention the [Edit].
Also, it seems that the buttons get very scrambled at times, and Refresh does not always clear that up. I end up clicking where I "think" the right button should be and hope for the best. Seems that when the buttons do bunch up they can appear at random around the page, often three atop one another, and maybe one way the heck out in left-field.
While I'm on a role, it would be nice to be able to switch between Flattened and Threaded Views on the fly. Each has a use, and having to go to Options and then come back down to the thread is a very slow process. Jive is probably incapable of this, but I can dream.

Can no longer boot into Mavericks 10.9.5

My problem is that I can no longer boot into Mavericks 10.9.5 on my mid-2012 Macbook Pro. The problem arose suddenly without any known major changes to my software or hardware. The booting process freezes with the apple visible and the circle below it spinning endlessly. Every several seconds, the display very briefly gets brighter, then the circle starts spinning again and the process repeats itself. It never gets to the user login screen.
Other than keeping various apps up to date, I don't recall any recent major operating system or other major software updates, nor have I made any recent hardware changes. I've searched a multitude of threads and and tried any number of fixes without success. Here's what I've tried so far (and probably a few more that I can't remember): (1) Repaired the startup disk with both Recovery HD -> Disk Utility and single-user mode -> /sbin/fsck -fy; (2) Repaired the startup disk permissions with Recovery HD -> Disk Utility; (3) Reloaded the Mavericks 10.9.5 operating system twice; (4) deleted /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist; (5) reset PRAM and NVRAM; (6) booted with "D" pressed and ran the Apple hardware test, which ran for about 40 minutes and reported no problems; (7) tried booting from a bootable clone of Mavericks 10.9.5 on an external hard drive, which also failed at the same place with the apple showing and the circle below it spinning endlessly. ***Oddly, I am able to boot from a bootable clone of Mountain Lion on an external hard drive. It's Mavericks that won't boot.***
Here is the part of the system log the repeats itself over and over and seems to correlate with the repeated failed attempts to complete the booting process. Any help would be appreciated beyond words:

You got a prob I think, if you can boot a windows, MSconfig, startup options might restore the boot files.Only other thing is to try and either load a new windows and let it setup a boot file, or perhaps a win98 startup disk, and fdisk, then set active partiton, which will set an MBR. But that would leave a load of work to do, I think I'd opt for an install of XP, and let it repair existing installation, and make a new boot file.
Hope you don't need the info on disks. If you do, I would install another HDD, load XP, then copy original Disk to save place.

Presonus FP-10 no longer works after Mavericks update

I updated my Mac Mini to Mavericks and now my Presonus FP-10 will not work. I know that Presonus has made a statement that FP-10 is no longer compatible with Maverick or Mountain Lion. I had it up and running in Mountain Lion. My question is can I reinstall Lion or Mountain Lion to fix this urgent problem. I am using my Mac Mini O SX 10.9 as of now.

I have now managed to get the Canon LBP6300dn printer working on my network (i.e. I did not use USB at all).
In case it helps others, here are the steps I performed.
Infrastructure:
My printer is connected by LAN cable to my Airport Extreme.
The Airport Extreme has a DHCP reservation defined for the printer (e.g. fixed address of 10.1.2.3).
I need A4 as the default paper size, so I installed the UK version of the driver (Mac_CAPT_V365_uk_EN.dmg). I do not know if the locale makes any difference.
I orginally set-up the printer when I used Mountain Lion.
My Mavericks installation on my laptop was clean (i.e. the hard disk was reformatted first)
Set-up:
The printer was switched on and installation was done on my Mavericks laptop over WiFi.
Double-click the .DMG file and follow the instructions.
Open System Preferences | Printers & Scanners.
Click + to add a new printer, the Add dialog should open.
For me, nothing appeared under the Default tab.
Click the IP tab.
In the Address: field: I entered the fixed IP address of my printer (e.g. 10.1.2.3).
The IP address should be automatically validated.
The Protocol: Field was set to Line Printer Daemon - LPD.
After a few seconds, the Use: field should display “Generic PostScript Printer”
Click on the Use: field’s menu to display available options and then pick “Select Software …”
In the Printer Software dialog, select “Canon LBP6300 CAPT (UK)” . Or the equivalent for your locale. Click Ok. Note: I could not get the “Canon LBP6300n CAPT (UK)” to work.
For me, an error “Unable to verify the printer on your network appeared”, but I clicked Continue.
I left the Paper Source Options set to none. (I do not have the 500 cassette.)
I clicked Ok to finish the adding of the printer
After this the printer was finally working for me, including duplex printing.
Anyway, I hope this might help others that are struggling with Mavericks and the Canon LBP6300dn printer.

Based upon the folder error, my guess is the Desktop Manager is having difficulty determining your default mail client. I am not sure why but it is easy enough to redo a profile in Outlook just to test this. (Control Panel / Mail)
Of course, I would backup my PST file prior to doing this and then create a new profile and import the PST file into the new profile. Once the profile is running and tested ok, I would again go to the Control Panel / Mail and set the default profile to point to the newly created profile. Then run the Desktop Manager and see what happens....

Folder is no longer part of the system data source....message

I just got a replacement phone due to a hardware issue with my old phone. I was able to transfer all the data from my old device to new device via blackberry desktop manager, however, I have been unable to get the synchronization to work properly. When I try to configure synchronization to use Outlook for Calendar & Address book etc. I get an error message when I click finish. The error message is a Runtime Error: Folder is no longer part o fthe data source, or the folder could not be found
I have tried downloading and reinstalling the software Blackberry Desktop Manager is 4.7.0.37 released March 2009
I have reviewed the solutions provided by blackberry & on this message board, but they do not make sense to me. One listing states to click on 'Intellisync' in desktop manager, which does not exist in the version I have. Another listing is referring to check the .PST on the device to see if data is in it, then create a new MAPI folder. I have not been able to figure out how to do either of these tasks.

I would copy over the entire thing if you have room. With iTunes 10.4 though, you can download any previous iTunes purchases you have made in the past with your current iTunes account. While in iTunes, look at the left hand side of your screen and select "Purchases" and look at the bottom right corner of the screen and select "Download Previous Purchases". If you have an iPhone, iPod and/or iPad...you can do the same thing from each device. Nice new feature...just remember that those ripped CDs need a back-up!!! Enjoy...

Flash Builder 4 - design view - states basedOn + design area widget

Since i updated my project from Flex 3 to Flash Builder (4), i have very annoying issues in the design area.
The one in Flex 3 was quite usefull, but the new version is not easy, and straight forward usable.
Here are the 3 issues:
- when i have states designed from another one, i use the basedOn mxml attribute, which was used in Flex 3 and still exist in SDK 4 states system.
But the designer view in Flash Builder don't take those basedOn properties in account!
What can i do? and is it a known bug?
- When i have at least one precific state, i must define a defautl state, in the new SDK. Ok, but in design view, i cant add a new component without making the change only for one state. I can only make the change for the default state, but it will not be taken in account for all the other states, like i can do in Flex 3.
What i want to be able to do this: making changes in design view without selecting ANY state.
Is it possible? How can i do?
- In flex 3, there were a design area widget to select the resolution used for the preview design.
It was very usefull when the application has very dynamic width and height.
In Flash Builder, this widget has been removed.
Why has it been removed? and how can i preview my mxml views wihtout changing width and height values?

The update has been improved in every other areas, so it is not that much important.
I just hope that the new release will fix that (as it has been answered to my post).
The only thing i don't like in new releases of FB is that when the architecture of SDK is aimed to seperate the work between design and code, they focused only on catalyst to create the tools to manipulate design, and they forgot to keep an easy way to do design app directly in FB (with the design view and the style properties of MXML in FB3). But for now, if you don't like the restriction of the new release, you can continue to work with Flex 3 for 0$! And even in Flex 4, you can create MX components for which the design view will work as before. The fact that tools can manage a mix between MX and Spark components is a great thing. It is up to you to choose which you need which its own advantages and drawbacks.
Xcode is real pain to use with outdated ergonomy. It is only usefull to code in Objective C which is another real pain to do.
XCode can be cheapper because all Apple products are quite expansive, so the software to create softwares for them can be much more cheapper.
And Apple get a good revenue share from AppStore, so again they can give a cheap soft to create apps. You also have to pay 100$ to be able to send app to appstore, in ly opinion the good price for XCode should be 0$, not even 80$!
Flash builder 4 is very stable, but if you don't like it, you can choose another tool. Main competitor has no designer at all!

I have some upcoming dental work ($7k) and was planning to pay in interest-free installments to the office. However, I was just approved (hooray) for a Quicksilver card with 0% APR until March. I am considering putting the work on this card, because I would earn 1.5% ($105) and get 10% discount from the dentist for paying in full ($700!). It is not a problem to pay this off before March. I have no immediate credit needs so I can take the score hit for a few months on the higher util. Are there any long-term negatives to carrying a balance? Will Cap1 hold it against me in the future? I know they like to see you charge up the card and pay it off in full, not sure if this plan will bite me. (I would pay well above minimum each month.) Thanks for any advice.

While % util will go up, scoring of % util has no memory, and thus once paid off, it will not have contnued impact. A possible concern of a credtior is when a consumer maintains a high balance for a prolonged period, which can be viewed as an indication that the consumer is over-relying on credit, and thus might be a higher risk.Based on that, it could trigger a decrease in credit limit, thus resutling in little or no decrease in % util even though the account balance is being reduced. I would try to keep it below approx 80% of overall credit limit, and if above that number, get it down within a couple of months.

My CanoScan 8600F no longer works with Mavericks upgrade. Canon does not offer new drivers.

The Canoscan Toolbox works with Mavericks to scan, copy, etc.
If you have Photoshop or Photoshop Elements the drivers can be installed so one can scan from within those applications.
All the necessary software (CanoScan Toolbox 5.0.1.2 Installer) can be obtained from the Canon site.
And, as Eustace mentioned, Vuescan works.

MS-LDAP usernames are 15 char long SAP only allows 12 Char

I have a customer that has a MS-Active Directory consolidation project going on as well as an SAP implementation. There will need to be new standards set for the Active Directory and there will be a large data cleanup. I am not sure if they will use portal but it is an ECC, BI and PI implementation at least. They wish to set up Single sign on with LDAP. The issue is some of their LDAP user names are 15 charcters long but SAP only accepts 12 characters - what will happen when we connect this up?
Is there any way around it?

but I would not cut off the username without searching for duplicates.
A good way to solve this could be to introduce an IdM username based upon numbers, like A00001, A00002 and so on. And then join in the usernames from AD and SAP storing their usernames in the ACCOUNT attributes or something.
For the duplicate check you could use the fields firstname, lastname, mail address, personal number, ... It can be a bit tricky though and you may need to manually synchronize some users, but this is worth it.
