ok a lot of people have had issues with installing the update via the software update option in mac os x tiger now let me explain something first it is not apples fault they did not expect that tons of people would be downloading this update at once which caused problems
some of the issues people have run into are
1.the cd rom after the update the superdrive or regular super drive will not read cds
2.your photoshop application stops working or any adobe product stops working
now the simple fix is this
go online to apple.com select the download section in the support area of this web page once this is done 
go and download the update manually and run the update manually this will correct any issues with the update including cd rom drive errors and even adobe product errors

Since Apple know exactly how many systems are out there, have experienced download demands from previous update releases, they very clearly know the kind of demand there will be when a new update for MacOS is released. The issues with Software Update are nothing to do with this - and indeed, historically there have always appeared to be a small proportion of systems that have not functioned correctly with a MacOS update - a quick perusal of MacFixit going back some years would evidence the fact.
When Software Update downloads the wrong components, it's not volume of traffic that causes it, but that when Software Update examines the specific system, it finds components that cause it to misidentify it.

There are many reasons users may suffer these, and similar (and very DISsimilar) issues, not just from the update itself, but prebinding, permissions, system caches, font files, plists....

You omitted to mention WHICH update file to download - which is the critical part of the advice. Users who experience problems with the update as downloaded by Software Update, should download the 10.4.8 'Combi' update file from the apple/support/downloads page. The combi (combined) update contains the entire thing, not just the bits tailored to what Software Update takes to be the specific system. There are two versions of this file - one for PPC systems and one for Intel - it's important of course to select the correct one for the type of system, being used.
People often say that the Combi update fixes their problem when in fact what may well be happening is that by installing the combi update version, it overwrites faulty files (plists for example) that had caused the problem the user experienced. Installing this version of the update can certainly RESOLVE these kind of problems, but is not the only way to do so.
Simple and easy when it works - undoubtedly so.
