Little Rock AR-- A joyous "Whoo-Hoo" was heard throughout the North Little Rock neighborhood of Argenta Friday night when local Mac addict placed his order for a refurbed MPB 2.5. The computer has shipped already and is expected to arrive on Friday. When asked why he finally did it he responded--
"My fiance pretty much took over my MacBook and my DP G5--love it as I may--doesn't fit so well in a briefcase. I also figured, hey--I'm doing all this FCP stuff now and it sure would be nice to work on some edits and motion graphics while on the job."
This self-proclaimed Mac addict said he only has one question as he awaits its arrival.
"I am just wondering if I can clone my 10.5 partition from my PPC G5 to my new Intel MBP. I am going to turn to the other kick-a$$ Mac addicts on Apple discussions and hopefully someone else has tried it with success. That's one of the cool things about being all things Apple--unlike PC people--Mac People openly and willingly share vital operational information to better the community."

Hi, Area Man. No, I'm afraid you can't usefully clone a PowerPC Mac's hard drive into your new MBP. The PPC OSX build on it won't run the Intel MBP. A better choice is to use Migration Assistant to bring over your Users folder, capturing all your documents, settings and preferences. You can also migrate your Applications folder, though there's a fair chance that some of your apps won't run or will need to be updated for compatibility with the Intel processor. The fact that you're already running Leopard on the G5 reduces the likelihood of OS version compatibility issues considerably. If you were migrating from a computer running OS X 10.3.x or 10.4.x, there would probably be more of those.
That said, I used Migration Assistant to migrate my Users and Applications from an old Titanium Powerbook G4 running 10.3.9 to my new MBP without a lot of problems. I did have to go through every one of my applications and find out whether each one still worked in Leopard or needed to be updated (or upgraded for $) before I was out of the woods, but I did that and everything is fine now. Fortunately none of my old application versions actually caused a crash, freeze or lockup: the ones that didn't work just didn't work, and I was able to Quit or Force Quit them gracefully.
If you use anything in Classic mode on the G5, remember that you won't be able to do so on the MBP.

It looks like something has modified your /etc/hosts file — do you know which of your apps has done that?
Did you ensure that all of your installed third-party apps are compatible with Mavericks before upgrading to Mavericks?

I have plugged a portable battery to the USB and my macbook pro stopped working after that, right before it shut down there was a message on the screen that said something like " USB device is withdrawing so much power, please disconnect and connect again?
if the device I connected have caused this, shouldn't the macbook itself have some type of protection that should prevent this from happening.
because when I took it to an apple certified maintenance shop, the guy said that now it could only run while connected to the power. it won't run on batteries. and that I have to change the motherboard.
can I just replace the damaged part only, would apple consider this as a design issue and they could pay for it, or should I just buy a new motherboard for 800$.

The problem is in finding a tech shop that will/can do board level repairs on Macs. They are few. And I certainly wouldn't spend $800 on a new logic board - I would replace the computer if I had to pay that much!
You could call around to a few repair shops and see if they feel competent to isolate the problem and do a board level repair - but I'm afraid, in the end, that your search will be futile.

Hi. I am preparing for CA Bar Exam. I am considering buying MacBook Pro for exam writing. One is 13 inch 1499 dollar 2.5 GHz 8GB, the other is 15 inch MacBook Pro 2.7 GHz 2799 dollar 16 GB. Both are retina. Which one is better for me?

I have an iMac, an iPhone, and a MacBook Pro. My full iTunes library is on the iMac and iPhone, but only a handful of songs are on my MacBook. They are all associated with the same Apple ID. When I try to sync, I get a warning message stating that I will lose songs on my phone which aren't on the laptop. How transfer my music from my phone to the laptop?

I would do a transfer of purchases from the phone and not sync. If you sync then it will want to start over and sync music that is on the MacBook Pro. Can someone connect in FaceTime if they are using a friends Macbook Pro, yet, doens't have an Apple ID?? For example, I have an IPAD and a Macbook Pro. Can I connect to FaceTime on my Macbook Pro and connect with a friend using my IPAD????
I have also tried changing the contact emails(you can contact me by) in Facetime(diff email for IPAD and Macbook Pro). Facetime tried the call, I see the accept buttom appear and it goes away as the call never connects? Any ideas??

I do not know what you mean by that. Any currently produced Mac is likely to be supported for as long as every other Apple product that has ever been produced. Most Apple products are relegated to "vintage" status approximately six years after which they are discontinued by Apple, meaning that the non-Retina MBP is likely to be supported through 2020. -
I have an old PowerPC running 10.4.11 and a Macbook Pro running 10.6.7 sitting side by side. Both are using AirPort to connect to the internet wirelessly to the same wireless router. The old Mac connects with full bars but the MBP struggles with only 2 bars. Pls help, thanks!

Yes, I could connect them by ethernet if all I wanted to do was transfer files, but I would like to network them so I could use wireless internet. The machines are not always so close together, I did that to simplify the testing. With the very slow transfer speeds I am reluctant to move ahead with the internet step.

Providing specifics on all the ways to do this will take more time than I am willing to spend here these days. You can do some of this with Home Sharing. You can transfer the entire library from one computer to another, If you do that you can delete what you don't want from the transferred library.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder. If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there. (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
You do not want to use a new AppleID. Change the AppleID on the new phone to the old ID. Purchases made with one AppleID cannot be transferred to a different one and it will be a royal pain to manage two Apple IDs.
Change iTunes Store account on an iOS device - Log out of your current account with Settings.app > Store (Settings > iTunes & App Stores on iOS 6) > tap on your AppleID. Log in with a different account. The only 'noise maker on a retina MBP are the fans. The will speed up if there is a need to dissipate heat.
The MBP will become hot if CPU/GPU intensive applications are in use. That is expected and normal.
