Areca 1680 SAS Raid

Hello all
In my previous post i clarified much of doubts i have on mac pro raid capabilities thanks to this forum.
I still have a question: if i buy the Areca 1680 sas raid controller, that is bootable via firmware upgrade, how can i install macosx over the raid set i created?
The leopard dvd doesn't have the driver built in for this card, so i'm confused.
I think that a workaround would be:
install leopard on external hdd (in my case attached via firewire).
install the right driver
use carbon copy cloner to copy the fresh installation from the firewire disk to the new array.
That's a right or there is a easiest way?
Anyone has experience with Areca 1680?
Thanks!

I have a 1680 that i have installed in a intel 07 xserve and hooked up with NORCO infiniband box. I have had a difficult time getting this to work with OS X leopard. I have been getting kernel panic attacks when running the unit with 10.5 The only way that i could get it formated is to use the CLI utility as none of the other ways to config RAID worked. I have called tech support several times but have a hard time understanding them and working through problem. They have been very pleasant but the Mac tech support could be better. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. When i first set it up it seemed to work great and i transfered 80-90 gig worth of files without problem and it seemed very fast.

  • Areca arc1222 8x raid card

I have a couple of questions, I have the areca arc1222 8x raid card (it has 2 min sas4i ports on it) and I have the sas4i to 4 individual sata connectors. I bought it for another system and now am just about to get me mac pro. I used to have a g5, and the drives could just be reconnected to my internal raid card. However, on the macpro, I believe they are on quick connect trays. I have seen the max conect link that just looks like a sa4i to sas4i connector. I am not really sure what it does, maybe someone here can teach me before I get my mac pro. Do all 4 of the internal drives come off the drive cage in a sas4i connector or something? How would I use a internal card with either the sas4i ports or the 4 single sata connectors to connect to the internal disks on the mac pro.
I already had a back plate that I planed to install into one of the unused slots of the mac pro that turns one of my internal sas4i connectors into a external sas4i connecter that I can use to get to external drive cage. I know I probably should have bought a raid controller that was all external but this is what I have, it looks like the max connect link is something that allows internal raid cards to connect to the 4 mac pro drives, but Im not finding enough to read about how it works, why I would need it if my card already has sas4i connectors on it, etc ,etc. Any help would be appreciated. I wont be seeing my mac pro for a couple of weeks.
    john

So no one can tell me that the 4 drives in the mac pro connect to the system via a mini sas 4i connector.
How about this than, seeing as the apple raid card has to connect to the drives, does anyone know how this connection takes place. I would think the raid card comes with a cable that extends to the connectors from the 4 drives? Is it a mini sas4i female on one end that extends the existing mini sas4 or what? Someone gotta have some experience here?
    Thanks

  • LSI SAS Raid Speed

I m courrious about how hight the transferspeed is going with the onboard controller.
I need 400 mb/s - this meight be realistic with 3 - 4 SAS HD in Raid 0 - but is the LSI controller able to provide this amount of data. How is the controller connected to the motherboard? PCI-e (x2) ?
Any experience with SATA and SAS Raid?
Thank you for sharing your experience.

overall the LSI controller seems faster, even with SATA drives.   since there are five total HDD bays on the D10, you can use the five LSI ports (bottom row with blue connectors) for HDDs and the intel ports (upper row with black connectors) for optical drives.

  • X4200 - Need SAS RAID controller

I cant seem to find a half height PCIX SAS RAID controller for our x4200s.
I've been looking at Adaptec, they don't have a 1/2 height (2U) card.
LSI has a few cards, but no solaris drivers.
I need assistance in deciding whether to buy new disk arrays, or new servers.
    Thanks!

Running 2 different raid cards often depends more on the system board's bios than the cards. The most common problem is resource conflicts. With the current boards and PCI-e controllers on both the chipset and the southbrdige, it's alittle easier to do this without running into this problem. Just make sure you install 1 controller first after you update the bios on the board. Get the driver installed and update the firmware on that card before you install the 2nd card. Then update the firmware on that. If you use the component layout in Asus manuals to see which slots are attached to where, then you can make sure you have 1 card on the chipset and 1 on the southbridge.

  • Opinion of Areca ARC-1110 RAID Controller?

I'm planning on adding a RAID set to my computer.  I'm looking for a good RAID card in the $200-300ish range.  What is the opinion of this card?  I've been reading that Areca is an excellent product, but I wasn't sure if there were any strong opinions or fineprint about this card.
Using an Asus Sabertooth X58 motherboard
Also, did I hear something about installing a card like this will hurt my graphics card performance, or was that my imagination?  GPU is Nvidia Quadro 4000
    Thanks,
    Bryan

    Bryan,
Like Harm stated, that particular Areca card is an old, outdated design. Unfortunately, most RAID cards under $500 do not improve editing performance sufficiently over an onboard software RAID to justify even their seemingly low cost. In other words, you will need to spend well over $1,000 (for the card by itself), plus the cost of any additional drives, in order to get a card that actually improves performance and reliability noticeably over onboard software RAID or an onboard aid0.
And the ARC-1110 that you're considering will not fit into any of the PCI-e slots at all. That's because that card is a PCI-x card which is not compatible at all with PCI-e but is compatible with legacy PCI slots. That means that on your particular Sabertooth X58 mobo, the only slot that you can use that card in is a legacy PCI slot, which is limited in maximum theoretical bandwidth to 133 MB/s. Unfortunately, modern hard drives (even single ones) can (and do) exceed that already, making the entire PCI-Legacy bus a bottleneck for any single modern hard drive. And forget about using the ARC-1110's RAID feature since it will still be limited by the PCI-Legacy bus (whiose maximum practical bandwidth is limited to only about 125 MB/s even with no other legacy PCI cards installed).
In other words, you are trying to buy the wrong RAID card for your particular system. You were trying to believe that PCI-x is the same as PCI-e when they are both totally different interfaces.

  • Adaptec 51245 PCIe SAS RAID Controller

    Hello
I am looking at running 8x WD RE4 2tb drives Raid 5 or 6  inside a Lian Li PC-A77F Case with an external HP1840 LTO4 tape drive
Would the Adaptec 51245 be the ideal controller for this as the other brands don't seem to support tape?
Or would it be better having two different cards eg Intel RS2BL080 for the raid and LSI SAS3801E for the Tape Drive.
Motherboard at this stage will be a ASUS Rampage 3 Extreme which will also have to provide slots for a capture card and possibly
    a Panasonic PCD35 5 card reader
    Any other suggestions welcome
    Many Thanks

This is likely do to new Phishing or Popup rules in IE9. Most web based controller management utility's do not show up as a valid website since they use local host or internal IP addresses. I know Areca has in the past used Java for their utility which also trips many of those rules. Try adding the web utility as a trusted website.

  • Areca RAID card drivers for Leopard?

I cannot seem to find Leopard drivers for my Areca 1220ML RAID card. Areca support page has no new drivers since Tiger and though they list their product as supported under Leopard, there exists no drivers that I can find. Apple makes no mention of them on the driver support/download section either
    help!

I have an Areca 1220 (not ML) that I put into a 10.5.4 Macbook Pro system (via external PCIE) and it worked without having to do anything. The drivers were already present. I have since swapped out the 1220 SATA for a 1680 SAS and it, too, worked without needing any drivers. I guess the press release from Areca was true!
    http://www.areca.com.tw/news/2007/n1106.htm
However, I did find a link to OS X drivers on the Areca site, which hopefully brings some assurance:

  • Both SAS and SATA RAID on same controller

Can I install both SAS and SATA raid on an RD240 with 8708EM2 controller?
I want to install first volume mirrored 600 GB SAS and second volume mirrored 2 TB SATA drives.

    welcome to the forum!
both SAS and SATA arrays are supported simultaneously on the PHYs but it's not recommended to mix the two within an array (ie: creating a SAS+SATA disk RAID 1).   per your question you can have a SAS+SAS RAID 1 plus a SATA+SATA RAID 1 concurrently on the LSI 1078 chipset.

  • Install RAID and SAS drives in my Mac Pro

    Hello,
I have a couple of Mac Pro machines and I want to install extra drives.
I want to install 2 extra SAS 300GB drives.
I take it I need to install a RAID card also.
Will the drives connect to the RAID?
I don't want them to mirror I simply want them as single drives that I can use for storage.
My main concern is will I be able to mouint and access these SAS RAID drives without having to reinstall the OSX System?
    Thanks,
    Dean

Not quiet sure I follow your plan here.
I want to install 2 extra SAS 300GB drives.
OK, no problem, assuming you have 2 spare bays.
I take it I need to install a RAID card also.
OK, no problem there, either, assuming you have a spare slot.
Will the drives connect to the RAID?
Umm, if you connect them, yes. It doesn't happen automatically
I don't want them to mirror I simply want them as single drives that I can use for storage.
This is what I don't understand - why use the RAID card if you're not planning on RAIDing the drives?
My main concern is will I be able to mouint and access these SAS RAID drives without having to reinstall the OSX System?
If these are additional drives it won't affect the existing system at all. They're completely separate.
If, on the other hand, you want to take the existing system and move it to a RAID volume then yes, you'll need to do some kind of work to preserve your data, but it's not clear that's what you're trying to do.

  • Is it possible to upgrade the Mac Pro with SCSI/SAS drives?

Hi guys I am considering to move on to a Mac Pro from my old PC.
The Mac Pro enclosure is quite unique in its hard drive holders as no cables are used and all drives are connected with a plugin mechanism.
So I am curious if that will allow me to upgrade to a SCSI/SAS storage system which requires cable connections between drives and the SCSI/SAS card on the PCI-E slot. I dont know if this will be possible with the Mac Pro enclosure.
Has anyone tried to do this?
Btw is there any Ultra320 or SAS(preferably) interface card available for Mac OS X?

The connectors for SATA drives can be used with SAS drives. However, the controller needs to be SAS compatible. I have never installed a SAS drive in the Mac Pro bay to see what happens. If some one has a SAS drive and wants to try this I would be interested in the results.
My guess is that the Mac Pro would not see the drive.
Areca sells the Mac Pro PCIe bootable ARC-1680 SAS controller in several configurations. This controller allows the user to utilize SAS or SATA hard drives connected to the card. The ARC-1680x comes with two external mini SAS connectors that can support eight direct connect hard drives or up to 128 devices (in theory) when used with SAS expanders.
The ARC-1680LP has one internal mini SAS port and one external mini SAS port. I looked at the Mac Pro internal SATA connectors and they can unscrew from the frame but there is only about 1/2" of clearance in that area of the case. In addition, I would want the hot swap bays to still operate and I did not see an easy way to patch into the existing SATA connectors. It would be nice if the Mac Pro factory connectors used snap on SATA connector on the back of the backplane so that users could interface the 4 SATA bays with an internal PCie controller. However, its hard wired in the existing configuration. With the new Mac Pro PCIe RAID 5 card on the market there must be alternative connectors that allow this type of installation to work properly.
Based on the ease at which the Areca SAS controller can be added as an external using the ARC-1680x I went with that option. I am using it with eight direct connect SATA hard drives now. I plan to expand the storage by adding a SAS expander in the form of a hub or an enclosure with SAS capabilities. I have been looking at a 16 bay SAS enclosure but I am not sure how loud it will be
Details on the ARC-1680 can be found here:
    http://www.areca.com.tw/products/pcietosas1680series.htm
Its very cool to have SAS or SATA capability along with a bootable card that can support tons of hard drives and RAID levels 0, 1,1E, 3, 5, 6, 10, 30, 50, 60 or JBOD . I booted the Mac Pro with a 2TB Mac OS X 10.4.10 RAID 6 volume and ran Xbench. It shows a 400MB/sec. hard drive setup and raises the overall Xbench score substantially.
While I doubt I will boot the Mac Pro from the RAID 6 volume much, it is very cool that that function is available. This is the only PCIe host adapter I have found with boot capabilities besides Apples new $999 4 port SATA internal card. SAS has lots of expansion capabilities. Users that want pretty much unlimited hard drive connectivity will enjoy the new ARC-1680x.
    Have fun!

  • Areca 1882x speed drop with a BBU - expected?

Anyone using an Areca ARC-1882x RAID controller with a BBU (Battery Backup Unit)? If so, any difference in performance with / without BBU, and did you have to change any settings?
Here is what I am seeing on a client's Mac Pro with a CineRAID 12-bay tower SAS Expander:
No BBU: 1000+MB/s write and 800 read speeds.
BBU connected: 500 write and 350 read (and the read is stuttering). No background processed or anything else apparent in the dashboard.
Areca's initial response: "When the BBU is connected, the controller will disable the disk internal cache for best data protection. A disk without internal cache will decrease performance."
I didn't have a chance to poke around the settings yet - there's probably a way to turn the internal cache back on since to me, that's the whole point of the BBU protection - keeping the cache alive until the power is back on.
Meantime, just I wanted to see if anyone ran into a similar issue and figured it out.

I admit I have not tried results without the BBU attached. If you get me really curious, I may, but with the results I got - although the different tests showed remarkably different results, HDTune Pro, Crystal Disk Mark and AJA tests - I do not have the impression that results are negatively influenced by the BBU.
It could be a MAC specific problem, since my observations are PC / Windows based.
