Areca RAID Battery Backup Module Problem

From the advice on this forum, I decided to go for an Areca 1680ix-12 and I've had it for about a week.  I now have a 6 disk RAID 3 running.  However, the battery back up unit was delayed, so I have only been testing the RAID so far and haven't enabled the write cache.  I received the battery unit today, and if I install it and boot the machine, I start getting the familiar Area beep sound that something is wrong.  If I have a look in the log, I see an 'under voltage' error.  Upon further examination, if I look in the hardware monitor, the 'CPU +1.2V' is running at less than 1.2 - somewhere around 1.08 (can't remember the exact number now).  I assume this is where the error is coming from.  If I unplug the batter backup and reboot, it stays consistent at 1.2 (or higher) with no voltage errors or beeping.  Anybody seen this before?  I'm thinking the battery unit is DOA, unless one of the gurus around here know how to fix this.
Thanks,
Clayton

Harm,
Thanks for the reply.  I triple checked that the cable was properly seated on both the BBM and the 1680ix.  It's just the single cable correct?  No other power cables necessary?  It currently says 'Charging(96%)', however when the BBM is connected all the hardware readings are normal except for the CPU 1.2V which is at 1.12V dropping down to 1.08.  When it hits 1.088, that's when under voltage error appears, which is about every 5 minutes while I'm trying to get this battery charged.
Should I wait until the battery is charged to see if the voltage goes up a bit, close to your 1.184V?  However, even if a charged battery fixed the situation, it doesn't seem right to me that you can't run the card without a fully charged battery.

  • Raid Battery Backup?

Hi.   I'm working through new disk subsystem issues (see links below for reference).  It looks like I have a new issue to address - raid battery backup.
My current editing system uses a battery backup.   Other than some issues lately, it's worked well.   I'm getting a new Areca 1882ix raid controller soon.   The question is, do I need a battery backup specifically for the raid controller?  E.g. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816151111 Or is a system battery backup adequate?
    Thanks,
    Dan.

    Harm,
Thanks.   Fortunately we have pretty good power here.    When we loose power, it's typically for just a few seconds maybe twice a month.
I have a small UPS hooked up now.   It's good for about 20 minutes.   But I'm a bit concerned that it will react fast enough for the raid controller.   I think I'll get that Areca BBM.  Cheap insurance.
Now if Areca will get their buns in gear and bring out the PCIe 3.0 version of the 1882ix...
    Thanks and regards,
    Dan.

  • The FIOS O.N.T. Battery Backup Replacement Problem

I ordered the suggested replacement for the BBU the GT12080HG and turns out our battery in the ONT has an extra set of wires out the top connecting above the battery; the replacement does not have these. The number of our battery is the PX12072 that the 12080 replaces but I'm wondering about that extra set of wires. Any help appreciated.

That is great to hear/read, but can you provide more details so that if other users have the same issue they can get it fixed.

  • Heating problem and battery backup

Recently I bought a macbook pro (7 days). I am facing heating problem and its battery backup is also not good, 3-4 hrs, but company claims 7 hrs. What should I do?

    Take note of this part:
While there are third-party utilities that measure the temperature of a notebook computer, it is important to understand that these utilities are not measuring the external case temperature. The actual case temperature is much lower. • Battery Backup Unit Nonsense. I'm not paying for your problems!

I may have to get rid of my service. These "Jackies" want me to pay $40 for a battery for THEIR battery backup unit that was installed in my apartment before I moved in over 2 years ago. I refuse to pay for your equipment's problems. This is ridiculous. Anyone else have this problem?  Customer service sucks in this company.

I found it online at amazon for 12 bucks and shipping.   12 V 8 AH sealed lead acid battery with an f2 connector
I know you probably don't want to hear it's in the Terms of service, but it is.

  • Battery backup problems during hurricane?

I'm wondering if folks lost FiOS phone service during the hurricane because their power failed and the FiOS battery backup ran out after eight hours. If so, what probelms did this cause: i.e. being unable to reach 911 or to check on relatives and friends.
Did you anticipate losing phone service? Were you able to use cell phone instead? Did the battery on that run out too?
    Thank you!
    A. GIorgianni

Just had a CHAT LIVE session about battery backup box beeping.
    Was told
"The battery only has a year warranty. Outside the year warranty we can no longer offer replacements. You could order a replacement here: https://fios.asurion.com or you may find a better option at a local hardware/battery store. "
Andrea T(07:27:44): where is the battery? did not know I could OPEN your equipment.
Josh(07:28:14): It is usually in a closet, basement or garage. Josh(07:28:19): You can open the battery backup box
If you follow the link, the battery is $46. This is my phone's backup battery not the battery in my SAAB! OMG Why not use a lithium that is easily found at any supermarket or drugstore?
Were you aware that we need to maintain VZ equipment every year?

  • Looking for Areca RAID HW Recommendations

I need to get an 8 disk tower enclosure and a reasonably priced 6G controller + six disks. My budget is 2-3K.
I've done lot's of research and found several sources, but don't know which sellers are the most reliable and not sure which disks to get (manufacturer and size 2,3,4 TB)? I want the most reliable combination which is why I'm primarily thinking Areca for the enclosure and controller, but am open to other suggestions. Super high performance is not a priority.
I have a P6X58D Premium ASUS MB, Intel Core I7-920, 14 GB RAM, NVIDIA GTX 480, Internal RAID 10 for my system disk and an internal three disk RAID 0.
I currently have a RR231x controller and TowerRAID TR8X-B enclosure with 4 WD Black 2GB disks that are starting to flake out and have had to rebuild the RAID 5 twice in two days (so I'll be ordering on Monday). I was cash strapped at the time and doing this more as a hobby. We are now starting a video production business and I can't affort to have disk issues.
I've checked arecaraid, sansdigital, atacom and B&H, but they are closed next week.
    Thanks... Rob

    Rob,
Personally, I much prefer putting all drives in the PC. I really like Supermicro's hot-swap device which mounts 5 drives in the space of three 5.25" drive bays. I do however change out supermicro's fan with a MUCH quieter version for video editing purposes.
For an external 8-drive enclose, you already own the exact model that I would purchase if I needed one. An even quieter solution, although far from elegant, is to build your own drive enclosure using a PC case (Antec 900 o9r 1200 work pretty well) with its own power supply (paper clip trick allows for turning on without having a motherboard to connect to).
Dump the RocketRaid immediately!!! Even as a non-professional, I moved far away from the consumer RAID controller cards a long time ago and will never go back. Areca is my favorite for now; the reliability and tools that come with the expensive RAID controllers are truly in a different league. They sound expensive, but I do suggest getting the battery backup option for your controller. Whether or not you think you need the battery backup, it may help for faster caching options to be enabled on your controller.
For drives, you can certainly buy the uber expensive enterprise SATA or SAS drives for your RAID. Many of us however have had excellent success using the much lower priced consumer drives with Areca controllers even though they are not "certified" by Areca for that service.
If you are located in the USA, Newegg is pretty hard to beat as a supplier. I also order from Amazon, eBay, Provantage, and Directron from time to time and have had good luck with all of them over the years.
    Regards,
    Jim

  • Areca Raid card and Udev strangeness

I rebuilt my system with a custom kernel to use the Areca ARC1210 Raid drivers. The kernel built and booted without any problems, and dmesg even shows the raid driver initializing:
    ARECA RAID ADAPTER0: FIRMWARE VERSION 1.38 2005-10-4
    scsi0: ARECA ARC1210 PCI-EXPRESS 4 PORTS SATA RAID CONTROLLER
    Driver version: 1.20.0X.12
Vendor: Areca Model: ARC-1210-VOL#00 Rev: 001
Type: Direct-access ANSI SCSI Revision: 003
    and later
SCSI device sda: 1249999872 512-byte hdwr sectors (640000 MB)
    sda: sda1
sd 0:0:0:0 Attached SCSI disk sda
    libata version 1.20.0 loaded
However, as it is booting it displays
mount: special device /dev/sda1 does not exist.
    The /etc/fstab entry is:
    /dev/sda1 /smnt/raid reiserfs defaults 0 0
It may or may not be worth noting, but when I go to mount it with udev (mount /dev/sda1) it fails with "wrong filesystem". But if I "mount /dev/sda1 /smnt/raid" it works just fine.
Also, /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 is symlinked to /dev/sda.
Am I missing something from my kernel? Or is something compiled as a module that shouldn't be?
EDIT: I forgot to mention, the custom kernel is not an initrd kernel, so I don't think the wiki page applies.

FUBAR wrote:If "mount /dev/sda1" doesn't work, I think your /etc/fstab isn't correct: mount reads /etc/fstab unless you use a "full" mount command like your "mount /dev/sda1 /smnt/raid".
You were correct on one count, thanks. I had a line
    /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb vfat user,noauto 0 0
earlier in fstab to mount my flash drive .
It does mount with "mount /dev/sda1" now, but it still produces the same error on boot, even though it seems to recognize the card at the beginning of dmesg. I would write a script to mount it before mysqld at boot, but I'm afraid that I'm missing something that will come back and bite me later. Is there some udev subtlety that I'm not catching?

  • Is there a log entry indicating the use of battery backup?

I have a Late 2013 iMac, 27" i7 780m running Mavericks 10.9.4 - Is there an entry in any of the System Report logs that shows whether or not the computer had to make use of a UPC battery backup?
I've experienced some of the same issues people have had with their system not waking from sleep, having to resort to using the power button to get things moving again. Today, however, we had a serious thunderstorm and when I got home the system was shut down (or possibly not wanting to wake from sleep - the iMacs have no glowing light like my old Mac Pro, so there's no way to tell if the thing is shut down, a "heavy sleeper", or what). I'm asking the above question because if the system ever does have to rely on the battery backup while I'm away I want a way to confirm the system is actually using the UPC and shutting down properly (via Power Management settings) and not simply getting knocked out by a power failure.
It's somewhat unrelated, but the not-waking-from-sleep issue factors into this because that problem seems to be unrepeatable under any controlled circumstances. The support documents starts with disconnecting peripherals that might cause an issue, but the problem pops up so infrequently (weeks apart) there's no way to know if a disconnected USB hub is the culprit or a red herring. Today, for example, I'm left wondering if my issue was a power outage (the UPC should have taken care of a safe shutdown) or if I had an iMac not wanting to wake from sleep.

Go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage.  Your backups are listed at the top, along with their sizes.  Note: this will only list your most current backup.  You may have your previous two backups available too but you cannot access any size information about them.

  • Inside Battery Backup Box

Sorry if this is being posted in the wrong forum.  Does anyone know what the power consumption of the internal battery backup box is?  This is where I am coming from.  I previously had xxx cable (internet, phone, & tv).  When I had a power outage I did not lose anything as I have a ups on my lcd tv/cable box, and a ups on my computer/modem.  Most of my power outages last from a few seconds to a couple of minutes.  I was able to watch tv or use the computer until the ups gave out.  Now with FIOS, if the power goes out, I will only have telephone service, I assume that the modem and tv will go blank instantly even though they are still powered.  So, I was thinking of putting a small ups on the battery backup box to keep everything going.  Thoughts anyone?
    Mike T.

I believe that the BBU uses around 34 watts. You should be able to plug the BBU into a UPS with no problem.

  • Nokia 5800xm, very bad battery backup

    hi all,
i have just bought Nokia 5800 XM, a week back. I am facing a very bad experience with this new phone since its giving a poor battery backup. The battery is not lasting even a day. I charge it fully in night and it starts getting down next day evening.
I am not using any application, neither any surfing. My talktime in a day is around 3 hrs max and listen to music max 1 hr.
Please suggest any workarounds, is this a generic problem all people are facing with this handset.
Should i contact nokia for replacing it?

First, make sure you don't have any open applications in the background. Turn off bluetooth, Wi-Fi. Reduce the screen brightness to the minimum required for legibility. Reduce the level of haptic feedback. Make sure there is a good network coverage. Update the firmware to the latest version...
If these are done, then take a look at the battery: use the phone until the battery goes dead, or until you see the Battery Low message a couple of times. Then, charge the batter to 100%, uninterrupted. Now, repeat it 2-3 times. After that, use the phone like you normally do. Charge it as and when you want.
If you are comparing the performance with what is there in the spec-sheet, please be informed that what you see in the specs are the ideal values - under "standard test conditions". In practical life, you should expect considerable differences. 3 hours of calls and 1 hour of music does mean a good deal of strain on the battery. If the music is thru loudspeakers, it adds to it.
    Cheers,

  • IPhone Battery Backup on ios 7.0.4

    Hi
I am facing a problem with my iPhone5 running on IOS 7.0.4, and it is the battery backup. Only Wifi was turned on.
I have reduced screen brightness, turned off 3G and no location services is running and i dont know why, I hardly get 6 hours of Battery Backup.
Is there any thing else i need to turn off.
Is this only happening to me , or every one else having the same issue?
    Provide me some solution...
    ThnQ in Adv.

    hi
they keep deleting my posts about that, but what helped me tremendously was simply switching off SIRI competely...
My phone died within 4-5 hours (new, clean install, the third new hardware in a row)... and since I switched off SIRI it holds the battery for over 24 hours even if I use it a lot...
told it to the Apple Store 'geniuses' today in Berlin, hopefully that info makes it into the next update.
