Argh! Stop the need to restart Tomcat on servlet changes

Hi Guys
I am running tomcat 6.0.18 and everytime I change a servlet I have to restart the whole app before changes are applied. I know its something to do with deployment. I've tried editing the context.xml (adding reloadable="true" privileged="true") and web.xml(removing comments from invoker xml) files in /conf dir to no avail. Can someone inform me what changes I need to make so that I dont need to restart everytime I change a servlet.

Nope. This is not a Tomcat problem, it is designed into the Sun Servlet Specification.
Think of it like this: You are in a car on a highway going about 70 miles and hour and you try to change the engine while still going down the highway. Yeah, not really possible. Why can't you just throw it into neutral and do it? Because, just like the car's clutch, the server will grind the gears until it is no longer usable.

I am updating a new IPAD to the latest version from ITUNES. The update is not complete and has stopped. What  is the procedure to restart? If I close ITUNES i get a message that the IPAD is updating. Will closing the application cause the update to be corrupted and thus the operating system? Will the same occur if I power the IPAD down or disconnect it vis the USB port?

You may also want to go to:
    ~/Library/iTunes/
This is done by  going to the "Go" in the Finder and select Go To Folder. Copy and paste:
    ~/Library/iTunes/
In to Go To Folder selection. Look for a folder called iPad Software Updates. Delete anything in that folder and re download the upadate.

  • How do I stop the [?? Probable Spam] subject line change?

I am running Apple mail and linking to a MobileMe account via IMAP. I have no other accounts that I access via Apple mail. Some of my mail subject lines begin with [?? Probable Spam]. I don't have any anti-virus software and I have no idea where this label is coming from. I did accidentally install Kaspersky anti-virus for Mac a while ago, but I deleted the App as soon as I discovered my mistake. Could it still be lurking around somehow?
I have junk mail filtering turned on in Mail preferences, but that highlights possible junk mail and lets me tell mail that a message is not junk. I'm fine with that.
I'd like to stop or at least figure out how to get rid of the [?? Probable Spam} subject line when I reply to a message. Frankly, it's embarrassing. Help!

It's possible. Most mail providers run anti-spam software on their servers to minimize to whatever extent possible the crap that we get. You should ask them. I have no idea why you see what you see unless you still have residual elements of the anti-virus software you installed. See:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • The need for Speed - my setup

I have been using Lightroom since version 1 and have recently upgraded to version 3. As many have reported, version 3 needs more CPU speed for rendering so I have modified my workflow to get maximum speed.
Until recently I had a Dell M65 Notebook with a 2.16 GHz Core2 dual CPU and 3 GByte RAM. I was using Windows 7 x64. All my RAW files are on an external HD, connected with USB 2.0 to the notebook.
Upgrading to Lightroom 3 made everything too slow, as the CPU would stay at 100% for long times, like 10 seconds during edits.
Therefore, I upgraded to a Dell M4500 with a Core i7 CPU Q840 @ 1,87 GHz and 8GByte RAM. This CPU has 4 phyical cores, each supporting hyperthreading for a total of 8 logical cores. I am using Windows 7 x64.
On the new notebook, I have never had L2 installed.
The L3 Library is located on the internal Hard drive, together with all the previews. The RAW files are still on the external 2.5" USB 2.0 drive.
I upgraded by importing first the L3beta catalog and then L2 catalogs. I found a bug, which would crash L3 if the same photo was already in my L3 catalog as well as in a L2 catalog to be imported. I solved that problem by importing the L2 catalog first separately and then exporting parts of it to new L3 catalogs and then importing these parts to the main L3 catalog.
During import, I had the external drive holding all the photos attached to the notebook.
At this point, I had only the catalog in place, but no previews. I set the preview size in L3 to 2048pixels. It is important to set this value higher than the screen resolution. Otherwise, L3 will have to process the RAW files most of the time, making things very slow.
I once tried looking at the imported photos during import. That was not  a good idea as L3 went very slow and started swapping on the hard  drive. I had to stop import and restart L3 to regain speed. I assume  that L3 has some memory leak issues.
Now I opened one path on my external drive I wanted to work on. I noticed that when I opened a photo in the Library page, I would see the "Loading". After about 2-3 seconds for old (2003) photos and about 3 seconds for new (2010) photos, it would go away. This would of course not allow me to browse through at high speed. Therefore I selected all photos in one folder with new photos and asked L3 to make all the standard previews. L3 would start making them at a speed of about one every 1-2 seconds. Those photos were without any fancy stuff like adjustment brush. One thing I noticed was that the CPU load was between 25 and 50%, so L3 is not using all the available cores for this operation. Optimizing this process for many cores would give me a speed advantage of 2-3.
I have about 50k pictures in my library. Almost all of them RAW files.
The result is that I can now browse through the photos with a very low delay. If I select the next photo, I will see a low res version of it almost instintaniouosly, and the high res version after about half a second. If I go crazy and use the scroll wheel extensively and very fast, after some 5-10 or so photos, scrolling stops. At that point, I have to wait for the film strip at the bottom of the screen to update. Then I can continue. If I do not show the film strip, I can scroll a bit further, but there are still intermittent stops, where I have to wait for L3 to catch up. Still, even at the point where scrolling stops, I still get the hi res picture after about a second. It seems that the speed of the internal Hard drive is the limit here. If I need to scroll faster, I select the grid of pictures. There I can go even faster.
Zooming in to 1:1 forces the full resolution previews to be made. That takes about 3 seconds on my notebook. If I revisit the same photo later, I can zoom in and get the full res photo in about half a second.
I then tried to import some data from the CF cards. The import went smooth (although rather slow, but that was the same in L3b2) and I tried to look at the pictures during import. That was not a good idea, as L3 started using RAM excessively, the hard drive was working continously and everyting went very slow. I stopped the import and restarted L3. Apparently, there is a memory leak somewhere so I decided to adopt the following workflow:
Import the files for the Memory Card (I have a USB card reader)
Close L3 and restart (I skip the backup if asked by L3)
Select all newly imported pictures and generate the standard previews.
Close L3 and restart (I skip the backup if asked by L3)
Now I select what pictures I want to work on by by giving them the 1-5 stars.
Then I filter the 5 star pictures and move over to the Edit module
If I see the internal Hard drive working a lot during edits, I close L3 and restart.
Browsing in the Edit module is much slower than in the Library module.
Also, during edit, speed of operation is dependent on the resolution I look at. If I look at the photo zoomed out, I get to see the next picture after about 1/3 of a second, and have a waiting time of about 3 seconds the first time I open a picture until the "Loading" goes away. I can only assume that at this point, the 1:1 previews are made. If I go back to a previously edited photo, the time delay is about 1 second. If I close L3 and reopen, it takes 3 seconds again. During that time, all 8 cores are working, but only up to about 50%, so there is still room for improvment here.
Browsing zoomed in takes initially about 1 seconds extra. Returning to a photo zoomed in does not seem to cause any extra delay, though.
I always wait until "Loading" goes away before I try editing anything.  If I start immeditaly changing something, L3 becomes slow. Sometimes it  stays that way, and I have to restart to regain speed.
The Memory for Camera Raw is set at 1 GB, the default. I have not found any speed advantage setting it higher.
I use the adjustment brush a lot as well as red eye removal and gradients and I see no practical difference in rendering time when used. If I paint on the photo zoomed out, I see the result of the adjustement brush instintaniously during painting. Changes to the exposure etc. is also rendered with no visible delay.
Editing zoomed in to 1:1 is another story. If I use the adjustement brush, I have to wait about 3 seconds for anything tho happen after I made the first stroke. After that, the delay is reduced to about half a second. L3 does record the movement of the mouse correctly, but the update is much slower than if zoomed out. Changing the exposure dial is also rendered with about half a second delay. Therefore I try to do as many edits zoomed out as possible.
Looking at the memory consumption after a couple of hours of work, it seems that L3 needs several GBytes of RAM to be happy. When I close L3, about 3 GBytes are freed.
Hope this can be of some help. Questions and Comments are wellcome.
    Best regards,
    Bengt

Setting Lightroom's preview size to larger than screen resolution is guaranteed to slow things down. I have a dual monitor system whith Lightroom showing the loupe on one screen and the grid on the other. The screen sizes are 1920x1080 and 2560x1440. Following your practice for previews would bring my system to a crawl and I have an entry level workstation. All my previews are of standard 1024x768 in size. The only delays in viewing come when Lightroom is asked to display an image where there is no preview. Once the preview has been created, browsing is near instantaneous.
I beg to differ! The reason is that a preview can be used for any size, which is smaller than that of the preview. Scaling down a preview can be done with little or not loss in quality compared to getting the full resulution and scale that down. Scaling up is not possible.
In your case, you will not use the previews of 1024x768 at all for full screen display. Instead you will force L3 to create bigger previews the first time you open the photo. You could try this by generating the standard previews for new imported photos before you start browsing. Then try to browse. You will probably get the "Loading" message, which indicates that the preview was not used and another one with higher resolution will be made. Then try the same experiment, setting the size of the standard preview to 2048. If, and only if, the size of your display area is not more than 2048 pixels wide and you display a photo in lanscape orientation, you will be able to browse without delay after generating the standard previews.
If I understand your setup correctly, you display the photos in a window of 2560x1440 pixels. I suspect that only 1:1 previews could be used for that. I think Adobe should increase the maximum size of the previews to a value larger than 2048, so that you are not forced to use only the 1:1 previews.
I agree, that when the previews have been generated, browsing is near instantaneous.

    Hi kajbj,
Java guys are mostly using TOMCAT,so for me it seems to be the best place. That's not correct. Most people who are writing stuff for the web might be using Tomcat, but there are lots and lots of Java applications that aren't for the web.
Is there any other reason behind your question.Yes, this forum is named "New to Java" and Tomcat questions shouldn't be asked here, even if people knows the answer to you question. You will probably get better and more detailed answers in a Tomcat forum. All othe guys there are actually using Tomcat, and they know the small differences between the different versions, and how they behave on different operating systems. They do also know if you need to make configurations changes, and where you should make them.
So in future, please ask questions in a forum that is specific to the product that you are using.

I printed a 'preview' document and now it continues to print a never ending set of copies.  I have re-installed the printer software, but it still continues to print more copies.  What do I need to do to stop the document printing?

    Try resetting the printing system.
    1. Open System Preferences > Print & Fax
    2. Move your mouse over the Printers list
    3. Hold down the Control button and click the mouse
    4. Click the "Reset printing system ..." popup
    5. Restart your Mac
This will remove your print queues but not your printer drivers. So you will only need to add your printer queues again.

  • How to stop the registry without JVM restart

    Hi,
I have a question about the Registry object. In my project, custom RMIClient/ServerSocketfactories are used (a wrapper to SSL), and a few components (distributed) have their own registries. These applications read their config files from XML documents. One of the parameters in the config files are keystore locations and passwords for these keystores. These applcations offers a simple CLI interface allowing to execute a few commands (like q - quit, r - restart and such).
Now when I type the 'r' option so the application can restat and parse it's configuration file again, there is a possibility that some value related to the socket factories (keystore location or password) has changed. In that case, the registry created by CreateRegistry is no longer valid since it uses socket factories that are based on the old parameters.
What I want to achieve is to stop the existing registry and create a new one (I'm not using the rmiregistry deamon). Of course I cannot simply create new registry cause then I'd get an internal error (ObjID already in use). I safely unbind all existing objects and unexport objects for which there can possibly be any references, but still I need to stop the entire registry and start a new one. I'd like to know if this is possible at all (via some deep Java guts?) without restarting the whole JVM?
    thanks,
    owczi

Worked like a charm. I've seen Registry's javadoc hundreds of times and still I couldn't associate a simple fact that Registry extends Remote :]

  • Would it cause any harm to stop the DBworker process on the logger and let it restart during business hours?

I'm trying to connect to a database in an ICM script for the first time and I added a new database user to the Router registry. I think I must have to restart the service to activate the new credentials. Would it cause any harm to stop the DBworker process on the logger and let it restart during business hours?

    Lisa,
You shouldn't need to restart any processes. If you already had the database setup in Database Lookup Explorer before putting the credentials in the registry, you can just make a change to the Database Loookup entry, and the Router will try to reconnect.
Also, the Logger has nothing to do with ICM database lookups - the DBworker is part of the Router processes.

You don't need to upgrade your software.  But if you're struggling with Spry, IMO you should cut your losses and switch to something better for the longrun.
If you have a budget to work with, I highly recommend Project Seven's Pop-Menu Magic 3.  It's easy to use in DW CS4, 5, 6 or CC.  More importantly, it's bullet proof and works in all devices.

If you don't have a budget to work with, you can roll your own menus with jQuery plugins.  A bit more effort on your part, but they perform better than Spry.

  • Kernel Panic: You need to restart you computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again.

I apologize for writing a book, but I think explaining the full story may possibly get me a correct answer.  I hope that someone can give me some insight as to what is the problem with my MacBook Pro.  I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008), model identifier: MacBookPro4,1 running OSX Lion 10.7.5 with 6 GB memory.  My wife first noticed a problem with the display.  Every so often it would get fuzzy with jumping lines going across the screen making it vitually unviewable.  The final time that incident took place the computer froze which required holding down the power button to restart the computer.  The computer started up to the point of the Apple logo and the spinning gear for quite some time until the screen darkened from top to bottom displaying the following message in five different languages: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again."  I have read other blogs and support communities where people get the message intermittently, but my computer would not go past that point no matter what.  Through research and the Apple Store I was told that this is a Kernel Panic.  The so called "Apple Genius" at the local Apple Store was unable to get the computer to boot past that point even with his gadget.  It would not startup in recovery mode, safe mode or off of a disc.  I forget exacty what he told me, but he said it was getting past the first two startup steps, but it would not get past the third step which is to mount the desktop.  He guessed that it may be a problem with the hard drive; a loose wire or something or other.  I disconnected the hard drive completely and took it out.  Everything appered to be connected properly.  Then I installed it back correctly, but it did not solve the issue.  So I guess I disproved his theory of a loose wire...  I purchased ProSoft Data Rescue 3 and connected my MacBook Pro to another Apple computer using a firewire 400 cable.  I was able to get everything I needed off of the hard drive.  I did some more research and I decided to restart the MacBook Pro in verbose mode (holding down the command button and V button).  The computer magically started up!!!  I was upset that I wasted my money on the ProSoft Data Rescue 3.  I managed to take additional items off of the computer and back it up on to an external hard drive.  After some time the computer froze.  I repeated the power button process to restart and received the same kernel panic.  I managed to get the computer to startup approximately six or seven more times via verbose mode; each time the computer staying on for a shorter amount of time before it would freeze.  I managed to run Disk Utitlity.  I performed first aid to fix the hard drive and it said that the hard drive appeared to be fine.  After first aid I erased the hard drive and booted off of a Lion disc to perform a clean install or an erase and install.  Lion installed until the progress bar got the the end where I received a message that there was an error installing Lion, please try again.  Each time I attempted to install the software I would receive the same message.  Eventually the computer would not boot from the Lion disc.  I went back to the Apple Store and the Apple Genius was able to get the computer to boot off of his gadget where Lion istalled completely.  I set up the computer as a new computer.  He said that he partitioned the hard drive as DOS and then back to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which would get rid of any errors the drive may have had.  He guessed that the problem was the hard drive, but was not exactly sure.  When I brought it home I installed all of the software applications I had on it previously.  Approximately three days later, which may have been the fifth of sixth time starting up the computer, the display became fuzzy again and the computer froze.  The computer did restart once and I was able to retreive a "log" which I have pasted below.  After if froze for the second time it restarted once using verbose mode and froze almost immediately.  After holding down the power key to shut it down and then restart; I received the same kernel panic after the Apple logo and spinning gear which put me right back to square one.  Now the computer will not boot via any method.  It freezes at the end of verbose mode which forces you to hold down the power button to shut down.  I also read that poorly seated ram may cause this issue, but I removed and installed the ram multiple times.  I even purchased new ram from Other World Computing (Mac Sales) 6 GB, but that did not make a difference.  I think I may see six possible problems on the verbose screen mode, five errors and one warning; I will type them out here:
    1. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key $Num (kSMCKeyNotFound)
    2. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: $Num kSMCKeyNotFound(0x84) fKeyHashTable=0x0
    3. SMC: :smcInitHelper ERROR: MMIO regMap ==NULL - fall back to old SMC mode
    4. WARNING - ACPI_SMCCtrlLoop: :initCPUCtrlLoop - no sub-config match for MacBookPro4,1 with 8 p-states, using default stepper instead
    5. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key MOTP (kSMCKeyNotFound)
    6. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key BEMB (kSMCKeyNotFound)
I was hoping that someone could read my log to ascertain wether or not they see a problem that stands out.  I was also hoping that someone could tell me if verbose mode provides any information that may be wrong with my computer.  I just hope that someone can give me some insight as to what may be wrong with my computer.  If it is the hard drive I will easily replace it, but I want to make sure that is the problem first before I waste money on a hard drive or anything else.  Please let me know if anyone requires any other information from me.
    Thank you!

I had already written a book and I did not want to bombard people with more information, but in my previous research I did come across the major issues with the NVIDIA card.  I also was well aware that Apple offered a replacement program that ended in December of 2012.  I was going to add that in my original post, but I discounted that theory because I put my faith in the so called "Apple Genius" when I made my second trip to the Apple Store.  I brought the NVIDIA card issue to his attention and asked him if he thought that may be the problem, but he said no.  He said if it was the NVIDIA card that the screen would be completely black and there would be no startup chime.  When I experienced the screen issues I thought it was a problem with the NVIDIA card or the logic board.  I asked myself, how can a flawed hard drive cause the screen to act funny.
nbar and Rick Warren, I thank you both for your help and insight; people like you are the real "Apple Geniuses."  I was hoping there was a way I could wipe the hard drive before I dumped the computer or attempted to sell it.  I guess I will look into purchasing a new machine when I have the funds.  Again...thank you both!

  • How to stop the impending installation of 8.0.1 upon FF restart?

I clicked on the install link for FF 8.0.1 on the Mozilla website. I thought it would download an executable file that I could use when I was ready. Instead it started the install process, and is now waiting for me to restart FF to complete the install of 8.0.1. I'm running FF 3.6.24 and I DO not want to install a newer version at this time. I haven't restarted FF and want to know how to eliminate FF 8.0.1 from finishing the install.

I am not certain about this so try it at your own risk. <br/>(Low risk: It either will stop the update or it will not, and it is possible to reinstall Firefox 3.6.24 without data loss if necessary)
Rename the Files ''update.mar'' and ''updates.xml'' to something like update.mar.old and updates.xml.old
File path on Windows XP something like
    C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\updates
    * your file path may well differ, different OS, and I have custom installs
    * see also http://kb.mozillazine.org/Software_Update
edit - the above method does at least work stopping a point update. I have just tried it, but have not tried stopping an upgrade from 3.6 to 7

  • I recently updated my MacBook Pro and now it says I need to restart every time I turn the computer on.  It is on a grey screen.

I have not used my MacBook Pro for a few months and when I started it up did all the microsoft and system updates.  Now it will not turn on and it goes to a grey page that state "You need to restart you computer. Hold down the Power button untilmitmturns off, then press the Power button again." I have done this several times and keep arriving at the same page.

OK, then there is little else to do other than to reinstall OS X.
Make sure you removed everything connected to the MBP including any USB devices.
If your Mac came with a System Install DVD, then insert it and hold the c key while starting your Mac. This will boot from the DVD instead of your internal disk.
If you find the grey screen reappears then it may not have restarted from the disc, so try again. You have to get past this step to do anything. If you can't, the problem may be a dirty or damaged DVD or an inoperative optical drive.
When it gets to the Mac OS C Utilities screen, select Disk Utility and repair your hard disk. Record any errors that it finds, since your problem may be due to a failed hard disk. If that is the case, the failure will probably arise again.
Then, reinstall OS X. Reinstalling is non-destructive to your user accounts or data.
If your Mac is running Lion, or Mountain Lion, you can boot OS X Recovery and perform all the above without a disc.
Read about OS X Recovery here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
