Arial Vs Arial MT

Hello,
Is there a difference between Arial and Arial MT fonts? I have Arial TTF in my windows fonts directory. I searched and there are few bits and pieces that allude to both of them being "essentially the same" but nothing conclusive. I also thought Arial was a Base 14 font and so will not get embedded in a pdf document. But, I have a pdf from a third party source where Arial MT is embedded.
Anyway, my problem is that I use a third party report generation tool (Report Mill) to create a pdf. The font that I am using is Arial but on the fonts panel in the generated pdf, it is listed as Arial MT, not embedded and gets displayed as Helvetica. Helvetica is better in my opinion, but that is not what is wanted by others.
I am also trying to talk to the third party vendor, but any input of Arial Vs Arial MT and why I Arial font is embedded in pdf when it is a Base font would be very helpful.
Thanks.

WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Uninstall Arial MT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd rather have good ol' Arial anyday!
I used AMP Font Viewer to remove it but I imagine you could just delete it from the fonts dir.  Font Viewer is a nice free app though.

  • ARIAL FONT IN REPORTS(WINDOWS), NOT SHOWN CORRECTLY UNDER LINUX

Our Reports are developed under Windows (Report Builder 9.0.4.0.33 and Windows 2000/Windows XP) and generated under Linux (IAS 10.1.2.0.2 with Red Hat Advanced Server). The Report Output is a PDF, that will be downloaded by the user with WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT. This works fine, but fonts are not shown correctly in the PDF, especially ARIAL, which is the font we use.
I have run the Fontsolution Configuration Script from Metalink, but we still have a problem.
When you look at the font.pdf, wich is the testreport from fontsolutions, some sizes and styles of Arial are printed correctly others not.
Arial 8 is ok, but Arial 10 and Arial 12 are something like Times New Roman.
Arial 12 Bolded is correct, but Arial 12 italic and Arial 12 bold italic are also not
    the Arial Font.
How can we correct this problem?
    Regards
    Udo

    # The <Face> must be the name (string/identifier) of a font face. The

    # and Overstrike styles to a 12-point, bold, italic Helvetica font.
    # All strings are case-insensitive in mapping. Font faces are likely to

    # NOTES ON PRECEDENCE OF PDF SECTIONS:
    # If you have entries for a same font in many PDF sections, then Font
    # Aliasing entry will take precedence over Font Embedding entry. Entries
    # in Font Embedding will take precedence over the entries in Font Subsetting
    # section.
    # Generic entries for a font must follow more specific entries for the same
    # font. For instance, if you want to subset helvetica Plain, helvetica Bold,
    # helvetica Italic and helvetica Bold-Italic fonts, your entries must be:
    # [ PDF:Subset ]
    # helvetica..Italic.Bold.. = "Arialbi.ttf"
    # helvetica...Bold.. = "Arialb.ttf"
    # helvetica..Italic... = "Ariali.ttf"
    # helvetica..... = "Arial.ttf"
    # If helvetica..... entry appears in the top of the list, all the styles of
    # helvetica font in the layout will be subset as helvetica Plain font.

    # The second field is the type of driver to be used for the printer.
    # Currently, "PostScript" and "ASCII" are the only types of driver for
    # printers supported for now. But in future we may be supporting
    # drivers for other printer types.
    # The third field is the version of the type of printer driver. It's 1
    # or 2 for all PostScript printers; or 1 for ASCII printers.
    # The fourth field is a long description of the printer. This will be
    # presented to the user in the "Choose Printer" dialog window.
    # The fifth field is the printer description file to be used. For
    # PostScript printers it is the PPD file of the printer. (This field is
    # currently unused for ASCII printers.)
    # You can use default.ppd for the description file if you don't have a
    # PPD file for the printer, but it's best to use the correct PPD file
    # for the printer.
    # You must fill in at least the first two fields (printer name and
    # type). If the version is empty, it defaults to "1"; if the long name
    # or description are empty, they will default to empty strings. A
    # version of 1 or an empty long name is fine, but, for PostScript
    # printers, you must fill in the description file name.
    # You don't have to update this file to use any printer. The printer
    # chooser interface let's you select a printer and driver at run time,
    # as well as associate a printer description file to the printer. You
    # should list all printers accessible to users here, however, to
    # simplify selecting a printer.
    # The first entry in this file will be used as the default printer, if
    # no printer was selected in the operating system. (For Unix, the

    # TK2_PRINTER
    # ORACLE_PRINTER

If you want to make platform independent use of fonts, you have to use the family, such as sans serif.
Arial is owned by monotype (http://monotype.com/). You have to contact them if you wish to redistribute it with your application. They also might have a suitable version that renders nicely under linux.

  • InDesign CS6 and Arial Narrow

I have been using CS5, had problems with the Arial Narrow font not showing up as four variations but only one, and eventually got it resolved somehow so that I had a separate font listed as Arial Narrow in the font name drop down list and four variations listed in the other drop down list (all distinct from the Arial font with its four variations). I know I deleted a lot of AdobeFnt*.lst files. I know I tried the hotfix that I found through a lot of Google searching, but it said it didn't apply to my system. Beyond that, I don't know what fixed the problem and I remember it feeling like a lot of trial and error, but eventually I got it solved.
A few days ago I installed CS6 on my system for the first time, and now I've got the same problem back again. I've spent all afternoon trying to resolve it but without any success.
I have three sets of TTF files for Arial Narrow, each set with four files for regular, bold, italic and bold italic. One set is version 2.20, one is version 2.37 and the other is version 2.40. My system is running Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit.
Does anyone have any idea of what will fix this problem on my system? I have a lot of InDesign documents that use Arial Narrow, so now whenever I open one of them, I have lots of missing font references. If I could get Arial Narrow reinstalled properly once again, they'd all go away.
    Thanks!

This problem is due to the offending fonts having the wrong "Preferred Family" and "Preferred Subfamily" names and it can be corrected using a Font Editor, such as the free version of Type light which can be downloaded from http://www.cr8software.net/typelight.html.
The process I found to work (in Windows 8 with Adobe Indesign CC and Office 2010) is as follows:
Open a File Explorer window and go to the system font library at C:/Windows/Fonts and double click on the Arial font (this has a special icon indicating that it contains multiple subentries)
Copy the fonts for Arial Narrow, Arial Narrow Bold, Arial Narrow Italic and Arial Narrow Bold Italic to a new folder on your desktop
Edit each of these copies using your font editor and change the  Preferred Family and Preferred Subfamily names (in Type light use the menu option Font>Names... then click the Advanced button)
The Preferred Family should be changed to Arial Narrow and the Preferred Subfamily should be either Regular, Bold, Italic, or Bold Italic as per the particular font you are editing (While you are there you could also make similar changes to the Arial Black font which has the same problem - in this case, make Preferred Family Arial Black and Preferred Subfamily Regular)
Save each font file back over the top of the one in the folder on the desktop (Save and replace) then open a new File Explorer window for that folder and drag the changed fonts back into their orginal location at C:/Windows/Fonts/Arial
Open a new File Explorer window and do a search on the C: drive for all instances of AdobeFnt*.lst then delete all of them
    Restart your computer

  • Is there a fix for Arial Narrow not showing up in InDesign? I need it!!

InDesign CS5, Windows7.  I am seeing where lots of people are having trouble, but has anyone found a fix?  Arial Narrow and it's font family is supposedly installed in Windows/Fonts, but is not available in InDesign.  Arial narrow only shows up under Arial as a family member, not its own family.  I NEED Arial Narrow Bold to work! I am behind schedule.

Yes, FM 9 uses unicode, as Michael wrote. But this alone does not explain why FrameMaker 9 completely ignores any registry-based font mappings. I'm not sure if I can call this a "bug", but it's definitely a flaw.
The only way to get around this problem: Open these documents in FrameMaker 8, change your paragraph formats globally from "Arial CE" (which most likely is a virtual font, mapped to Arial) to "Arial", save, and re-open in FM9. FrameMaker 8 also uses unicode, but still understands the "old" registry mappings to virtual fonts, and is able to re-encode text accordingly. FM9 hast lost this ability. I don't know of any way solving this without FM8.

  • Arial Narrow Font not embedded PDF when generated on server

    Hi,
I'm struggling with some font issues. My report contains only Arial or Arial Narrow subset font. These fonts are installed on all client and server machines. When I render the report locally and export it to pdf then everything works fine, the report looks
ok and when checking the pdf properties the Arial narrow font has been embedded. After deploying it to a SSRS server 2008 R2 and render it from this server the export to pdf converts the Arial Narrow font to Helvetica messing up my report.
Any ideas how to maintain the Arial Narrow font?
As far as I can tell every condition as described in http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms159713(SQL.100).aspx are met.

    Hi hans0305,
According to your description that you have problem with the font in the PDF, The font type is correct when you export report to PDF in the Preview but font changed from Arial Narrow to Helvetica when export to PDF in the Report Server, right?
This problem is related to the font-embedding of PDF. The font Arial Narrow haven’t embedded successfully to the PDF. Please check in the client machine which the report server and report manger located to make sure the Arial Narrow font have been installed
correctly by enter the Control Panel and select the “Font”.
For the client machine, closing all instances of the PDF viewer then reopening them should fix the issue. If the issue still persists, you may need a full machine reboot to get the client/server to recognize the newly installed font, you can also try an
reinstall of the font Arial Narrow.

  • Font substitution: Arial Unicode for Arial

We use Arial font for headlines, but InDesign consistently (always) changes Arial into Arial Unicode when I place copy from WORD. It leaves Times New Roman alone, and also other forms of Arial, such as Arial Black are OK. Just Arial has the problem. How do I permanently get it to run Arial? Thanks in advance, Cliff Moore

If you have a font manager (I'm guessing you don't), you can just turn fonts on and off. Without one, you have to remove fonts from Windows (Start>Control Panel>Fonts), but make sure you have a copy of the file before removing anything.
However, the fact that it is Arial Greek may mean the problem is something else and not a simple case of two Arials being active at the same time. Do you get a missing font message in ID?

  • Arial Narrow the 658753213rd

I went nuts today wit the Arial Narrow Win7 Bug.
After some hours i replaced them with my 1998 files and deletet the 3 adobe Fontlist entries.
Now my Arial narrow, still show up unter arial, but the 3 other (bold, narrow itali and bold italic) are dsiplayed under Arial Narrow.
So it is still near unusable cause i cant use shorcuts to switch a text to bold.
    Anyone an Idea?!?
I ran out of 'em after 4 hours and a lot of tea ...
    thx all

This Microsoft font screwup bugged me so much, I put togtether my own instructions on fixing it for future use. After following this procedure your Arial and Arial Narrow fonts will reside properly inside Adobe CS4/5 apps:
Adobe CS4 Missing Font Issues (Vista and Windows 7)
Arial Narrow fonts only show up under ‘Arial’ as ‘Narrow’ Regular, with Bold, Italic and Bold Italic unavailable.
Font files cannot be copied and pasted, but dragging seems to work to make copies available. Drag the four Arial Narrow fonts from C:\Windows\Fonts onto your Desktop and then place them into to the following folders:
    InDesign
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS4\Fonts
    Photoshop and Illustrator
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts
    Photoshop (64-bit)
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts
NOTE: Create the Fonts folder if it does not exist.

  • HELP - I've lost my Arial Greek - Any ideas

I've been thoroughly test driving InDesign CS4 for a week or so, as I can no longer print my documents with Greek words in mostly English text from PageMaker 6.5 on new Post Script Xerox printer.  At first was pleased to see that Greek text is supported & converts on PDFs & printed corrctly from both on the PS & old printers.
Today I was trying to find the Euro symbol - it's on my keyboard & works with all other software with Ctrl, Alt 4 - but I used to have a problem converting to PDFs (had to use old computer with Windows 98 to get the Greek text when making PDF files for our printers anyway since Windows 2000, and this also handled the euros.)
Found a solution on the Adobe help (eventually) telling me about using Alt Gr 4 for € - which works in InDesign & prints correctly & creates correct PDF.  There was a suggestion that it might upset 'rip' which I think my printers 'do' when they print our books, so set about creating a test document with € , Greek & UK accents - SUDDENLY FOUND MY GREEK CHARACTERS ARE NOW ENGLISH.
My Control panel is set for alternative Greek keyboard & language and this still worked on email text and PageMaker (EL - for Elada appears in my bottom status panel) but InDesign will only show English Arial characters now when I am in Greek mode.  Also here now - this last para has been typed in EL/Greek mode!  - just tested PM & Internet again and they too have NOW lost Greek since I exited & restarted my computer. Thought they may reset things!!   Now it doesn't work anywhere.
PageMaker shows Arial, Greek Arial, Arial Nrrow, etc as separate 'fonts', InDesign was just showing Arial for the full character set as Word always has.
I was pressing all manner of combinations of Ctrl, Alt, Shift, Alt Gr and numbers, and trying to set up an alternative keystroke to get the € and looking for 'Glyphs' to test. Have I deactivated Greek with some strange combination of accidental keystrokes?  ANY IDEAS ANYONE?
This is VERY important to me as we are Greek-o-File so I must have Greek text!

Fortunately I saved this text to repaste which I tried to post 2-2.5 hours ago (been to local pub since - it's Friday night here!).  Obviously net too busy as I had to leave it trying to download my repsonse!! which was.... (I'll try again)
Thanks for your speedy answer. Isn't technology a pain !!!!
I have double & treble checked my language settings & Greek is still set up with the same Ctrl Shift toggle as before. I did not chnage any settings.  Ι did this before sending the message, after and again just now.  There is an indicator on my task bar that shows EN (Engish) or EL (Ellada - Greek) when I toggle between the languages (I don't have any other languages set up).
Whilst doing this reply I tried again with some Greek text so toggled - it was slow to change, but text still in English on either setting.  The EN/EL on task bar at the top changed & I noticed next to the 'EL Greek' a keyboard symbol with 'United Kingdon' where I found an alternative drop down 'Greek' option which had not changed when I toggled before ... Eureka (a Greek word) I've got my Greek back again !!!! αβψδε abcde
Now when I toggle both change - and it works on emails too.
The EN/EL indicator used to be bottom right corner, but for some reason is now top right with Microphone, Tools, Handwriting & Drawing pad on EN English & Just keyboard English & Drawing pad when EL shown. Did I inadvertently open up a wider range of language options or just moved it and expanded?
All's well that ends well - I still don't really know why it went wrong ... but it seems that sometimes you just have to tell Windows 3 or 4 times what you want before it reacts or unravls itself   !!!!   Thankyou.

  • Arial Black is the specified font for headers on my website; however, FF4 doesn't render out Arial Black whereas FF3.6 rendered it out perfectly along with other browsers. What's the deal?

I just upgraded to FF4 and was surprised to see that Arial Black wasn't rendering. My css validates and have never had an issue rendering our Arial Black on any browser - as of now FF4 is the only browser that doesn't support Arial Black. Chrome, Safari, IE9, and Opera all display my fonts as I specified in the css. Being a web designer I seek uniformity across all browsers.

Found the answer [http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/971376-firefox-displays-my-site-incorrectly-other-browsers-fine/page__p__593634608#entry593634608 here] . Changing the CSS to this should do the trick:
    font-weight: 900;
    font-family: "Arial Black", Arial, sans-serif;

  • Arial Black, Rockwell Bold, Cooper Black fonts don't render.

This has been a problem since FF4 and has been unresolved. Please fix. Note: when hardware acceleration is turned off (or more specifically gfx.direct2d.disabled is set to true) those fonts render. This is only a problem on Win7 (32 and 64 bit)

You need to add specific font attributes to make Firefox use such fonts. Firefox places all fonts that belong to a specific family in one group on Windows 7+ and you need to use a selector like "font-weight:900;" to select Arial Black from the Arial group. Otherwise Arial is used.
You will have to find out which selectors to use for Rockwell Bold and Cooper Black to make Firefxo use them on Window 7.
