Try searching on TextWindow.WriteLine().
One hint is to put some math in those parentheses.
Experiment! That's the fun!

  • Intro to Programming Small Basic Lab

    Hello All,
    I am currently working on a lab for my intro to programming class that I am having some difficulty with.  The assignment is to create a program in Small Basic where a teacher can enter a Students name, enter multiple grades for that student, then when
    the teacher does not have another grade for that student, to have the program return an average of all the grades entered.  The program should then prompt the teacher if they have another student's grade to enter.  It's supposed to help us understand
    "while" loops, however, our teacher did not explain much about how to begin this process or how to calculate averages for something such as this... It's all very confusing and several of us (those of us who are GENUINELY beginners to programming...)
    are having issues with the assignment.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Here is one of my many attempts at creating this program:
    Continue = "no"
    If Continue <> "no" Then
      Grade=""
      While(Grade<>"")
        TextWindow.Write("Enter the name of the student: ")
        Name=TextWindow.Read()
        TextWindow.Write("Enter a grade: ")
        Grade=TextWindow.ReadNumber()
        x=array.getitemcount("Grade")
        y=array.getvalue("Name" , "Grade")
        Textwindow.WriteLine(Name + "'s total grade is: " + y/x)
      EndWhile
      TextWindow.Write("Do you have another student?: [yes] [no]")
      Continue=TextWindow.Read()
    EndIf
    I know I am doing something very wrong with this program, I just don't know what... I don't want the answer just GIVEN to me, but any hints or tips would be great.
    Regards,
    James

    Not sure you will get much response here - this is a VB.Net forum.
    Here's a hint: is continue = 'no' at start of if? Look at the previous line. Also look at the test in the while. For the if branch to be taken the test must be true, for the while to repeat the test must be true.
    Regards David R

  • Attention All Small Basic Gurus! Time to SPRING Into Action!

    April fools out of the way, now let's find an April genius!
    The name "April" is derived from the Latin verb "aperire", meaning "to open", as it is the season when trees, flowers AND MINDS start to open! And.. I can't wait to OPEN and read this month's community contributions!
    (groan, tenuous link!)
    Things are indeed heating up around TechNet. The Wiki has become a shining example of what the community has to offer, and talent is SPRINGING FORTH from all corners of our garden of knowledge.

  • Can I run another Small Basic program from a simple menu in another Small Basic program, (It does not need to return!)

    Hi
    Is there a way of calling another program from within a small basic program ?
    I dont mean run within it and then continue where it left off.
    I simply ideally I ideally want to create one program that only contains menu options and depending on the user choice, then to go off and run another program.
    If this is not possible..maybe I am getting over cautious, but does any one know the program size limit, if I need to put all teh features in one program ?
    Thanks in advance
    Dave

    You would need an extension that can start an external exe (may be any exe includng another pre-compiled Small Basic program, or even the SmallBasicComplier to compile source and then run it), such as LDProcess.Start in my extension.  There are also
    other extensions with this or similar commands.

  • Two Problems within the Small Basic landscape

    The Small Basic of things.
    There are 2 situations in the Small Basic landscape that I think are a bit disappointing and possibly reduce growth opportunities for the SB community:
    Programs don't always run in the browser; and
    Program Delay is retarded when the SB ide is closed. (big issue for gamers)
    Nonki has a workaround for 1 and I've done a workaround in the past for 2 (awaiting test feedback on this).
    I think it would be opportunistic and more efficient if it were easier for SB devs to supply programs and code for audiences that have SB installed and those who don't.
    The only possible advantage I see with this situation is that it requires SB coders to learn how to deploy workarounds.
    It would be a lot simpler if workarounds weren't required.
    Any thoughts?
    PS
    Feedback on issue 2.

    Apple says they are aware and working on it.  The Sound is "not" lost and may be retrievable after their fix.  It is an iMovie problem.  It may take a while as they are preoccupied with the new "Mountain Lion" release.  In the meantime I am saving my movies on my MacBook.  If you can record your sound with a setting other them FPEG 2 that may help.  I can't, so I am stuck.  Big trip to NWT in late August so I am holding my breath.  Hope they are faster than fixing the Numbers upload to iCloud.

  • I love Small Basic- Request for in-app language reference

    My 9 year old daughter got a computer for xmas and wants to learn to code. I found Small Basic and it is perfect for teaching simple constructs and logic blocks. We are having fun with making "Hello, NAME$! How are you feeling today" programs.
    My only suggestion would be to have a language reference in the program. Is there a place to submit suggestions or feedback?

    Fun!
    This is the project my Intro to Programming students take on when we get to Variables. I will make a point of having them publish the results and share them here.
    Here is two of the challenges I give them: Prevent words from wrapping past the edge of the Textwindow. In others, provide a natural break in the text about 3/4 of the way across so longer entries don't message up the display. An highlight the input words
    in your story by changing their color.
    Good luck everyone, I'm dying to see the results.

    Here's an interesting book on learning Small Basic:
    http://www.elektor.com/products/books/programming/pc-programming.35.2610873.lynkx
    From the cover:
    There are many different PC programming languages available on the market. Some have beautiful names; some have easy to use development tools. Others have incredible power. They all have one thing in common: they assume that you have, or want to have, a knack
    for technology and difficult to read commands.
    In this book we take a practical approach to programming. We assume that you simply want to write a PC program, and write it quickly. Not in a professional environment, not in order to start a new career, but for plain and simple fun... or just to get a task
    done.
    Therefore we use Small Basic. You will have an application up and running in a matter of minutes. You will understand exactly how it works and be able to write text programs, graphical user interfaces, and advanced drivers. It is so simple; you don't even need
    to be an adult!

  • HELP Lottery Small Basic

    Hello everyone for a school thing, we have to write a program in small basic that simulates the lottery: pulling six different numbers from 1,2,...48
    Input: number of simulation
    Output: an ordered row of 8 lotto numberwe need help because we haven't really used small basics before and even with the documents our teachers sended us we are still not sure if it is working the way it is supposed to.We think there should also we a shorter way to do it this is what we have.                                                                                       GraphicsWindow.Title ="Lotto"

    Welcome H1998,
    here's is a shorter way:
    Program Code: HWG246
    It's just a sample so It doesn't include a button. You'll need to modify the code according to your goals. Depending on your familiarity with small basic, some methods may be unfamiliar with you. I recommend studying the sample and break the code to increase
    your understanding. If you need any explanations in regard to the provided sample or need further guidance, let me know. Hope this helps. Good luck.
    Another Side Note: Like WhTurner33 mentioned before, it's very uncommon to receive completed code (especially for school assignments). In the forum, guidance and small portions of code is provided to aid the inquirer. For future reference, please post any code
    you've done so far (like you did a couple hours ago). You're not required to post your code but whenever possible would be helpful. Before creating a post, perhaps you could search the forum and find out if your question is already answered in a previous post.
    If problems persist in your program or your still unclear about a specific concept then, by all means, post your question.

  • Small Basic Hangman

    Hello! I am trying to create a hangman game using Microsoft Small Basic, but I am failing. Can anyone please help me?
    PS I would appreciate sample code :)

    Hello DandoonZi,
    Program number:  KLG451
    Here is a sample code (although this code is more complete than most samples). It's a text version of hangman, which is one way to start off this particular program. It's for two players: one player inputs the
    word and the other player tries to guess the word. The major foundations are established so a graphics version is possible. For future reference, it would be helpful to post any code you have done so far on the forum or you could break down your program into
    smaller parts by focusing one part and making it the topic of your post. Like litdiv said, you could focus on how you would approach the game in real life. For instance, hangman consist of these major components:
    1. One person creates the word to be guessed.
    2. The game begins. Another person evaluates the word by guessing one letter at a time.
    3. An individual's decision has two outcomes: if letter is correct then character is printed as an added clue or if incorrect then penalized by having one less chance to guess.
    Steps 2-5 are repeated until the player runs out of chances or manage to guess all the characters before running out of chances.
    Now, let's translate the previous steps to a programming perspective:
    1. The word to be guessed is stored into a variable—keyWord—by player 1.
    2. The program then takes keyWord and breaks it down into sub-variables (an array) inside a loop so each letter can be evaluated by the program.
    3. The guess inputted by player 2 will be stored in a variable called input. The variable, input, is then compared to each sub-variables, or also known as indices, inside a loop. If input doesn't match any of the
    indices then player 2 is penalized by subtracting one from the variable, chances, the number of times the player can make a mistake. Otherwise, input is printed (displayed on screen) and the value of numOfCharsLeft, which tracks how many letters are left to
    be guessed, is deducted by one.
    These last two steps are nested inside a large loop (commonly known as the main loop) and constantly repeated until chances is zero, you lose, or numOfCharsLeft is zero, you win.
    Getting back to the forums. Let's say you are stuck on step 2 of your development process then you can make this the topic of your post and describe the details of your problem. The more specific you are the better
    we can help you. Everyone benefits.
    I recommend keeping these questions in mind while writing any program: Can I write this code better? How well do I know my program? How do I keep the code in my main loop minimal?
    The program provided is straight forward and worked when I ran it. If something doesn't work right please let me know.
    Hope this helps.

  • Small Basic Podcast

    Hello everyone;
    i wanna make a podcast program with small basic but when i write code like this ;
    Sub etkin
    son = Controls.LastClickedButton
    If aa = son Then
    GraphicsWindow.ShowMessage("{{Sürüm}} (0.01)","Beta Tonton")
    ElseIf ab = son then
    GraphicsWindow.Show()
    File.GetFiles("https://a75b9da71f50095fc4dc527d860da4427f274b07.googledrive.com/host/0B9s0FFxEQDb6T3VUdEw3QTJDS1E/efecast00.mp3")
    Sound.Play("https://a75b9da71f50095fc4dc527d860da4427f274b07.googledrive.com/host/0B9s0FFxEQDb6T3VUdEw3QTJDS1E/efecast00.mp3")
    Sound.PlayClick()
    elseif cks = son then
    Program.End()
    when i clicked play button don't respond (podcast size : 30 Mb)

    The problem seems to be downloading the file - perhaps it is too large or there is some permissions preventing it from being read.
    I first tested trying todownload it in SmallBasic:
    'Save this file somewhere to use Program.Directory
    url = "https://a75b9da71f50095fc4dc527d860da4427f274b07.googledrive.com/host/0B9s0FFxEQDb6T3VUdEw3QTJDS1E/efecast00.mp3"
    podCast = Network.DownloadFile(url) 'Download file as a temp file
    TextWindow.WriteLine(podCast)
    File.CopyFile(podCast,Program.Directory+"\podCast.mp3") 'Move it to somewhere and set extension
    Sound.Play(Program.Directory+"\podCast.mp3")
    TextWindow.Pause()
    The download appears to work (40 sec or so on my wifi) and the temp file and copy are created, but they have size 0, hence it cannot be played.
    If I downoad the mp3 using other methods (from browser) and put it in Program.Directory+"\podCast.mp3", then it can be played fine by
    Sound.Play(Program.Directory+"\podCast.mp3").
    So the problem is the downloading - I can't see anything explicitly limiting large file downloads in Small Basic code - it does all standard stuff.
