Arrange view in finder (split jpg from gif)

I have many .gif and .jpg files in a directory. How can I arrange that they are split up?  Something like view->arrange->kind

Arranging by kind will work. Or else sort by kind. Either will work.

  • Can no longer copy and past jpg and gifs into InDesign from c:\user\doc\pics

    Here is the error message we get when doing a copy and past from the hard drive to InDesign.
    Error Message from InDesign:
    Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing...
    First, do I need to add a plug-in to be able to copy and past jpgs and gifs?
    Second, we have always used clip organizer with no problem. Ability to copy and paste jpg & gif suddenly stopped. We get a box but no image ont the page. Have already tried dumping temp internet files through internet explorer. Have already un & re installed InDesign and repaired and fixed everything I could think of.
    Third, we can use the place command to place jpgs but can not place gifs.
    William (Helping Mrs. White)

    It sounds as if Mrs White needs to search visually for graphics and then place them. She can either set Windows Explorer
    to thumbnail view and drag a graphic on to an InDesign page - this will in effect be placing the graphic, not copying
    and pasting, and is the right way to go. Or she can use File > Place, and set the view in the Explorer window that she
    selects from in the Place command to a thumbnail view to see the graphics.
    GIFs can be placed. They are not a recommended format, but if you are placing clip art then you may have no option.
    So, in answer to your original question, no, you don't need a plug-in to place JPEGs and GIFs. But note that is place,
    not copy and paste.

    useWhat OS is the database running on? If it is a *nix flavour, you can call out to image magick convert utility (it is pre-installed on most linux variants, and you can compile it from source for other unixes). So you would probably store the blob into a temp file on the database server, call out to the shell to execute convert, and then load a blob from the converted file. See http://imagemagick.org for more information.
    If that is not an option, you might be able to use Java Advanced Imaging API from a Java stored proc to convert between those image formats. See http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/jai/downloads/download-1_1_2.html

  • JPGs and GIFs in Coverflow not showing

    For some reason the cover view in the Finder is no longer showing previews of JPGs and GIFs, but is only showing the generic icons for each.
    Any clues as to what's causing that and how to fix it?
    Cheers.

    Try deleting the Finder.plist preference:
    /Users/Kenny/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    Then relaunch the Finder.

  • Is there a trick to converting JPG from RGB to CMYK without the lossy re-compression?

    So I've got around 750 images in multiple categories and folders. Each image has 6 variants - 16 bit TIFF from over-eager beaver photographer, 16 bit TIFF, extracted backgrounds (done by student workers, who do not use English as we are not in the US), then, standardized 3000x2000 (or other suitable aspect ratio) PNG with corrected edges for web and light print, an 1800x1200 JPG for web and a few smaller PNG standards also for web.
    The 16 bit TIFFs with Extracted BG are the root files, and a series of actions builds the PNG's. The standardized PNG's are then pumped through actions and Image Processor to create output files.
    So I just discovered that a seemingly random number of these are in CMYK. That hasn't been a problem up until now because our website and our printed materials have no problem with CMYK and RGB files.
    But now we are starting to hand out these images to our customers - who are only interested in the 1800x1200 JPG and maybe 900x600 PNG files, which are most easily pulled directly from our website rather than sending them the entire 180gb graphics directory.
    And some of them are telling us that the pictures are being rejected. Most notably, Ebay does not allow CMYK files.
    So damage control- rebuild our entire library of images from the 16 bit TIFFs
    OR
    rebuild only a couple of different sizes and upload from there, replacing the pictures on the next major update (over the next year).
    I am *NOT* concerned about preserving color since 99% of our products are black and shades of grey, with only a hint of color.
    I am concerned about the degradation of changing mode on 60-70% compressed images, then resaving again with the lossy JPG compression.
    I'm about to start ripping into things with my actions and replacing around 1500 files online, so I'd like to be sure that I'm doing things in the most sensible way.
    If there's a tool that can do this conversion without another pass of compression, that would be ideal.

    My understanding of the JPG is only middling. I thought I understood that it uses anchor pixels and either a translation table of some sort or difference mapping, using 8 bits per piece of information.
    If that were the case, surely changing the translation from CMYK to RGB would be fairly simple.
    In this case, the usage is Ebay and they only accept JPG, PNG (and maybe BMP and GIF, I didn't look that closely), but require RGB. I was actually quite surprised to find that JPG allows CMYK since, as you say, anyone dealing with CMYK is going to be dealing with commercial printing and few people who deal with commercial printing would play around with JPG.
    I always stick to TIFF or PSD for workflow, but JPG is popular for a reason - when it comes to web, JPG is the only format that can deliver manageable file sizes with full-screen or "large" images for web. Our top level banner photo is 2590x692 and needs to be under 400kb for sane download speeds. PNG couldn't touch that. Even with the aforementioned 1800x1200, PNG is nearly 2mb, while I can maintain very decent quality with a 500kb file with JPG that works well for 'zoom in' type usage.
    So there's no way around JPG. It's just annoying that the first person to touch a random selection of the pics was primarily an Illustrator user and saved *some* of the pics in CMYK mode.
    It's like that old story about the farmer who didn't want anyone to steal his watermelons, so he cleverly posted a sign "None of these watermelons are poisoned", only to find a note the next day saying "Now, One of these watermelons is...".
    Far more work to fix 'some' of the images compared to just doing it right the first time.
    But then again, for workers like that, if you can't trust them with an easy job, you could hardly trust them with more complicated jobs...

  • Can I open a PDF and save it as a JPG or GIF?

    I asked on the PageMaker forum about creating a jpg or gif of a book cover I created in PageMaker. The suggestion was to create a pdf of it (no problem), open it in PhotoShop, then save it in the format I need. I don't own PhotoShop, so downloaded the Album Starter Edition. For the book cover with photos on it, only the photos are imported; for the book cover with only text and solid-color boxes, nothing at all is imported. Does anyone know how to get the entire pdf into PhotoShop so it can be saved, intact, as a jpg or gif? Thanks!

    I think Downloader in PSE organizer has capabilty to extract images from PDF.
    Collin- Is there any other way in PSE to extract images from PDF. Pls tell us how hat can be done.

  • Has anyone else been unable to click [open] a document folder while in the column view in finder?

    Since I have downloaded Mavericks, I am unable to open any document folder in the column view in finder.  When i go to any other view such as cover flow or list, they open.  But when it is in the column view, I am unable to click any folder - or any document for that matter. Can anyone help or atleast tell me I'm not the only one?
    Mike

    okay i figured it out. for some reason i had to go to the settings menu and click arrange by name and it automaticaly fixed it. it was weird all of the names were gray, and the color tags were to the left of the folder titles.  i hope this helps if any of you had that problem too.

  • Icon view in Finder windows do not autowrap

    I am using 10.5.1 on a 17" MBP 2.16 ghz.
    Since installing Leopard, Icon view in Finder windows do not autowrap and Finder windows do not always remember their display preferences.
    The Trash auto-wraps (the icons spread to take up the entire window if it is enlarged) But Opening a Folder in my default list view and switching to Icon view and then enarging the window only shows icons in the original window width. EG, If it were 3 colums of icons, it stays 3 columns of icons unless I use Clean Up TWICE and then I get 10 columns of icons which will wrap.
    Is this a Leopard BUG or a local problem. Any suggestions on fixing it?
    TIA,
    Bill

    Yeh - though I use cmd-J which I have used since it appeared, 10.1?
    But I just solved my problem. In my use as defaults selection, I had Snap to Grid selected in the arrange by pop-up rather than by Name.
    Selecting Name and clicking on Use as Defaults makes things work as expected.
    Thanks for making me look closely!
    Cheers,
    Bill

  • Is it possible to create a view where table in the From clause changes name

    is it possible to create a view from a from a table like this
    create view my_view as select id, col1, col2, result from <<my_latest_cacahe_table>>;
    the table in the from clause changes the name .
    I have another table which indicates the the latest name of my cache tables. Always there are two records there. The latest one and previous one.
    select * from cache_table_def
    table_name cache_table_name refresh_date
    my_table cache_table245 1/23/2012
    my_table cache_table235 1/22/2012
    create table cache_table_def (table_name varchar2(25), cache_table_name varchar2(25), refresh_date date);
    insert into cache_table_def values( 'my_table','cache_table245','23-jan-2012');
    insert into cache_table_def values ( 'my_table','cache_table546','22-jan-2012');
    create table cache_table245 (id number, col1 varchar2(50), col2 varchar2(20), result number);
    insert into cache_table245 values(1, 'test123', 'test345',12.12);
    insert into cache_table245 values (2, 'test223', 'test245',112.12);
    create table cache_table235 (id number, col1 varchar2(50), col2 varchar2(20), result number);
    insert into cache_table235 values (1, 'test123', 'test345',92.12);
    insert into cache_table235 values (2, 'test223', 'test245',222.12);
    what I need to do is find the latest cache_table name for my_table and use that in my view defintion
    When user select from the the view it always reurns the data from the latest cache_table
    is it possible to do something like this in oracle 11g?
    I have no control on the cache tables names. that is why I need to use the latest name from the table.
    Any ideas really appreciated.

    I've worked up an example that does what you ask. It uses the SCOTT schema EMP table. Make two copies of the EMP table, EMP1 and EMP2. I deleted dept 20 from emp1 and deleted dept 30 from emp2 so I could see that the result set really came from a different table.
    -- create a context to hold an environment variable - this will be the table name we want the view to query from
    create or replace context VIEW_CTX using SET_VIEW_FLAG;
    -- create the procedure specified for the context
    - we will pass in the name of the table to query from
    create or replace procedure SET_VIEW_FLAG ( p_table_name in varchar2 default 'EMP')
      as
      begin
          dbms_session.set_context( 'VIEW_CTX', 'TABLE_NAME', upper(p_table_name));
      end;
    -- these are the three queries - one for each table - none of them will return data until you set the context variable.
    select * from emp where 'EMP' = sys_context( 'VIEW_CTX', 'TABLE_NAME' );
    select * from emp1 where 'EMP1' = sys_context( 'VIEW_CTX', 'TABLE_NAME' );
    select * from emp2 where 'EMP2' =  sys_context( 'VIEW_CTX', 'TABLE_NAME' )
    -- this is how you set the context variable depending on the table you want the view to query
    exec set_view_flag( p_table_name => 'EMP' );
    exec set_view_flag( p_table_name => 'EMP1' );
    exec set_view_flag( p_table_name => 'EMP2');
    -- this will show you the current value of the context variable
    SELECT sys_context( 'VIEW_CTX', 'TABLE_NAME' ) FROM DUAL
    -- this is the view definition - it does a UNION ALL of the three queries but only one will actually return data
    CREATE VIEW THREE_TABLE_EMP_VIEW AS
    select * from emp where 'EMP' = sys_context( 'VIEW_CTX', 'TABLE_NAME' )
    union all
    select * from emp1 where 'EMP1' = sys_context( 'VIEW_CTX', 'TABLE_NAME' )
    union all
    select * from emp2 where 'EMP2' =  sys_context( 'VIEW_CTX', 'TABLE_NAME' )
    -- first time - no data since context variable hasn't been set yet
    SELECT * FROM THREE_TABLE_EMP_VIEW
    -- get data from the EMP table
    exec set_view_flag( p_table_name => 'EMP' );
    SELECT * FROM THREE_TABLE_EMP_VIEW
    -- get data from the EMP2 table
    exec set_view_flag( p_table_name => 'EMP2');
    SELECT * FROM THREE_TABLE_EMP_VIEW
    For your use case you just have to call the context procedure whenever you want to switch tables. You can union all as many queries as you want and can even put WHERE clause conditions based on other filtering criteria if you want. I have used this approach with report views so that one view can be used to roll up report data different ways or for different regions, report periods (weekly, quarterly, etc). I usually use this in a stored procedure that returns a REF CURSOR to the client. The client requests a weekly report and provides a date, the procedure calculates the START/END date based on the one date provided and sets context variables that the view uses in the WHERE clause for filtering.
    For reporting it works great! • How do I change "save image" to save as jpg or gif rather than an html pointer to the image?

    When I try to download images it is saving them as an HTML file instead of the actual image. I want to save images in their native jpg or gif formats as they are on the web. Downloading wallpapers for example is not possible. Without this I'm not going to stick with Firefox which is unfortunate because so far I love everything else about it, especially sync. I tried to download a Buffalo Bills helmet to use as an icon for a Bills fan forum which I wanted a Firefox shortcut for on my homescreen. I had to use the Android browser to do that because of this problem. Ridiculous!

    Unfortunately, Firefox for Android works quite differently than desktop Firefox in this regard. On the desktop, if you open about:config and set browser.download.useDownloadDir to false, then you prompted for the save location and file name. On Android, this simply stops Save Image from working.
    I was able to access the file by renaming Images.htm to a real file name using the ES File Explorer app. But... if you save images often, that would get old fast.
    Note: I think the name Images.htm came from the Google images results page that I was saving from, and the file name will depend on the site. When I saved from a site where the images had their own names, .jpeg was appended instead of .htm.
