Arranging synchronization for travel, growing lib, etc.

I hope it is okay to discuss 3rd party tools here -- I am the legal owner of all the content, just trying to keep my stuff with me as I travel a lot and not fill my hard drive!
I've been using Syncopation because I was not particularly careful (and kept changing my mind) about which computer, i.e. laptop or desktop, to buy content on from my iPhone and (now) iPad. This way, it seemed to be okay if I was on the road, bought more stuff, and synched my device to laptop in order to carry it around.
But the videos are mounting up and I have a need, at least at home, to keep the videos in a separate location from the music. Maybe, then, I'll just move videos I want on the go to the iPad when I travel instead of keeping it all with me.
What tools will coexist most happily to make it possible to do this -- i.e. mirror libraries on desktop and laptop AND keep the movies on a jump drive?
Suggestions on the least complex workflow for all of this are welcome.
Thx.

I prefer to arrange my photos by title but when I shut down Iphoto, my photos rearrange by date.  This is not acceptable for my growing library of snanned black and white ancestral photos. How do I get photos in events to stay in place ?

I actually am illiterate on the use of the finder to to view photos in folders.  I guess I will go to a class at the local Apple store for a lesson on the uses of finder .
My method of viewing my photos are through events in I photo.
    1. Download  from camera or scan  in from old photos.
2  I organize photos into events by occasion, or happenings in a certain year, or a group of photos with memorabilia of a certain person from childhood and on. etc.
    3.  Because Iphoto does not allow rearranging as I was able to do in my old PC with Corell,  I drag all of the photos to an " album" on the left side of sceen.
    4.  I arrange photos in "order" after which I number each photo in sequence. I do this for a few of reasons.
              - if a photo is accidentally deleted I know it.  I can usually remedy this by checking my trash or
    rescanning.
              - I can sort by title without complications and this holds in "album"
    5.  The pictures will re arrange automatially to match the album in I photo.
    6.  This worked great in I-photo 09 but now in mountain lion the pictures in events go back to "
sort by date" and will not hold "sort to Title"each time I photo is closed down.  What a nuicance it is to have to go  to view and click "title"  again and again every time Iphoto is opened.
    7. Can I go back to Photo 09? .

  • Can't configure Identity Synchronization for Windows through Server Console

    Hi everybody!
I am trying to get Sun Java System Directory Server EE talking with Windows Active Directory buy my progress has come to a halt getting Identity Synchronization for Windows 6 configured and working. I would appreciate any hints!
Here are the steps I have taken:
    1. I installed Directory Server Enterprise Edition 6.3.1 using native packages, no problems there (in terms of adding resources to directory, browsing them, etc).
    2. I installed the Message Queue (3.6 05Q1) that is bundled with the zip archive of DSEE
    3. I installed Identitty Synchronization for Windows (6), that is bundled with the zip archive of DSEE
    4. Logged into Sun Java System Server Console as per instructions after install.
Here is where I am stuck!
I logged in, but something is really weird! Here is what my structure looks like in the default view:
    domain name
    +Server
    ++Server Group [desc: Directory Server 6.0 /opt/SUNWdsee/ds6]
    ++Server Group (1) [var/mps/serverroot]
    +++Administration Server
+++Identity Synchronization for Windows [details are totally blank... even icon is an empty blue square!]
This is the second time I went through the process of installing all this stuff, I made sure to pay attention to the installation instructions as best as I could, but I am very new to Solaris and unfortunately am on an extremely tight deadline.
I am suspecting the problem has something to do with ports or directories, but my knowledge of Solaris is not even at a level where I can troubleshoot this by myself. Even if you have some advice that seems stupid to you, please let me hear it! I am pretty stupid, I might benefit from it!!
Please, if anyone has any hints or suggestions, I would love to hear them. Like I said, I configured all this while following the installation guides, but I am worried I missed something or misunderstood something.
    Thanks in advance,
    Al

Hello wlier, thanks for all your help with this! I really appreciate it.
Reinstalled this whole thing, and at least I got everything under one server group... still can't access ISW though... it is listed in the leftside pane, but when I click on it the rightside pane goes completely blank.
    ~status of idsnyc is:
    -no connectors were found
    -System Manager Status: Started
next step is "1. create an initial configuration using the product's console..."
    ~installed/configured everything as root
~no errors generated when I login to the console, but when I expand the hostname in the leftside pane I get the following error:

~If "run the Administration Server from the Server Group" means what I think it means, I can do that with no problem. I can double click on the Administration Server and configure various options, start/stop the server, etc.
~I just have one interface/hostname configured, and the Server Console shows the correct name
It's like it's not making the connection to the ISW server (btw, it is listed as "isw-solaris1"... is this okay? "solaris1" is the hostname for this server). From what I understand after logging in to Server Console as Directory Manager, it should be asking me for a password to access ISW, but I don't any kind of login/password prompt.
I should be logging in to Server Console on the port I configured during ISW installation, right? In my case, port 1390.
We don't have a service plan and I doubt my company would want to spring the cash for it, so I'm pretty much stuck!!

  • Get System Identity Synchronization for Windows working in relication mode

I have got ISW running on DS 5.2 it is all working correctly.
What I want to do is set up a relica DS server with ISW on it as well.
    What I have done:
Install DS5.2 on another machine and start replication and it works all data is in the new LDAP server, but I am having problems install the ISW software on the new server.
    Steps:
    1) On original master with ISW installed and tell ISW of a secondery server. It tell me to install connector an that machine.
    2) On my replica server I run "runInstaller.sh" and it all seems to work except when I stop and restart the server I get the followowing errors:
    # /etc/init.d/directory start

I have checked and the above files are not installed well SUNWxrcsj and SUNWiswcm have not be installed.
    Question:
How do I install ISW on a secondery server. I thought I was following the online docs, but I guess I am missing something.

    Hello All,
Waiting for any idea for the long time. I am trying again and again by restoring my directory server zone. I have two whole root zones one i am using for sun portal and communication suite 5 and other is for directory server. They are working fine. but when i try to install the Sun Java System Identity Synchronization for Windows 6.0 on directory server zone. Some time it hangs at 97% while installing core and some time it giving error the installer cannot upload some entries in the template this error comes when i restore my directory server zone.
Can some please give me idea why it giving these error on solaris zone.
    Thanks in Advance,

In runUninstaller.sh, below jar file name are written -classpath arguments.
    /usr/share/lib/mps/jss3.jar
    /usr/sfw/share/lib/xerces-200.jar
    These Are settings correct?
If these settings are wrong, resync is set by same wrong settings in binary code?
Please tell me how to resync and to uninstall Identity Synchronization for Windows 1.0.

  • What is happening about Java System Identity Synchronization for Windows

I have been playing with "Java System Identity Synchronization for Windows" for a while now. I am about to swich over to is 100%, but I am worried that the latest version is "Windows 1 2004Q3".
Has any one got any ideas about this. The product sort of works, and is much smaller that going for the whole "Java System Identity Management Suite 2005Q4" which is way to big and complicated for our and I think many people.
Don't forget Microsoft have now release its own tools to do this in the latest Windows 2003 SP.

  • Regional Language settings - Cloud for Travel

In the employee replication, preferences for example, logon languages =EN, is automatically set as English.
However, when user is created as a business user, in the regional settings of the same user, the language is automatically set as Japanese. Same for the rest of the regional settings.
Q: Where do we set this default regional settings (language, date format, decimal format etc) for all employees as per replication request, otherthan individual user personalization in the system?

    Hey Harsh,
can you please review the thread : http://scn.sap.com/thread/3631942
Please see the comments from myself as well as Michel Roth to better understand the logic behind regional setting derivation.
Hope that helps. (Discussion was for the Bydesign system but I feel the same should apply to Cloud for travel as well.)

  • Travel management-- Control Parameters for Travel Expenses-- Define global

We have setup provision variants for:
India, UAE, Africa (since travel expenses in these countries need to be settled in the local currency).
For each of the above variants, we have done the following settings in IMG node:
Travel management-->Control Parameters for Travel Expenses --> Define global setting
I have selected the respective country for the "Country grouping" field. i.e. for India Variant, it is set to India and similarly for UAE etc.
Is this correct? What is the impact if in India variant this field ("Country grouping) is set to UAE?

    hi
the settings which you set is right.
you will have inconsistency between the settings you made in the other areas.

  • Must  have apps for travelling

Taking a driving trip from NY to FL.  Any suggestions for apps that I'll need for finding hotels, gas, food, gps, etc?  I'd like to get these loaded and familiarize myself with them before we leave.  I will have 3G while on the road.

Unless you're travelling the backroads, you should be able to find gas pretty easily, unless you are looking for a specific brand.  For hotels, I use Marriott's app, but usually make my reservations in advance.  I'd use the app only to change a current reservation.  In terms of food, Open Table is good for finding restaurants.  The app will use your "current location" to find restaurants in your vicinity, and you can make a reservation on the go.
Since you mentioned 3G, I assume your iPad has WiFi and 3G, in which case it has GPS built in.  For travel, I've found the built-in Maps app is quite good for showing where you are travelling, as well as providing traffic conditions and directions.

  • Anyone know of a Voice Translator that can work without WIFI?  for travel

would like to find a Voice Translator APP  (don't care about cost) that works without WIFI  - for Travel use in some areas with little or no wifi service.

Hey Calchick, I didn't read much of the details, only looked for key words, like offline, translation, etc. Illaass is correct, voice recognition and translation programs tend to be very large. If you have web access, you can talk in your native language and be heard in the foreign language. With out the web, your a text and read operation.
Personal experience, may help you, take of it what you will-- in BC time, (Before Computers) and traveling around, I found if you learn a few basic phrases in the language of the people you are visiting, i.e., things like, "Can you help me?", "Where am I" (have a map in hand when you ask this), "Where is the bathroom", "How much?", "Where do you go eat", "Where's the market?", "Take me to the pharmacy / hospital", and the most important phrase: "Thank You" I know, dumb examples but you get the point, about 20 phrases that cover the basics, who, what, where, when, and how, (think about the questions or things you would ask if you were in a city, in the country you now live, that you have never been in) and a working knowledge of some basic answers, (also, learn a few cruse words, that way you will know if your getting help or the butt of a joke), along with a translation guide book, you can get through almost any situation. Being able to speak even just a little of the other persons language, without using a device, will make most people want to help you, (unless you get a real A-hole), most people will help you if you make an attempt to learn and speak there language, even if it's just a little, (shows you cared enough to try). The translator app just replaces the book, and it will make it easier to learn the phrases. Remember; The app is just a tool, not your mouth. It can get a little rough at times, but generally works, got me through a few countries and made a few friends along the way. Having a soccer ball helps too! Hope this helps, have good travels. Cheers.

  • Trying to organize a new workflow for travel using a desktop, laptop and IPad using LR mobile

Apologies in advance as I'm sure this has been asked but I am swamped with information on the web.
OK for travel I want to upload images to my laptop from my CF cards.  I then want to be able to make basic edits and flags on the laptop (which I am yet to purchase) and then have this reflect on my desktop.  I have LR mobile so figured the laptop access would allow me to do the same things as if I was viewing on the IPad but apparently not...Please help!
I have read about some people exporting the catalog backwards and forwards between the 2 devices and this seems messy and I don't think I want to get into that.  A main attraction was to be able to upload and edit on the road (I'm taking a 3.5 week trip to Cambodia) and then on my return to my desktop have a lot of the work done to then make final detailed edits and subsequent books, prints etc.
I love photography but I'm not a tech geek so any help/suggestions appreciated!

On the laptop start a new catalogue for the trip. Import all new photos into it. At the end, copy it and the images to the desktop and in, your main catalogue, use File > Import from Another Catalog to bring in all the work in the trip catalogue. Maybe practice this workflow now and return with other questions?

  • Recommendations for travel setup please

Thinking of a European trip with lots of indoor usage in museums, churches and such where allowed as well as normal walk-around usage and landscapes. Would love to keep the equipment list to a minimum of course. Concerns are mostly indoor shots where flashes are not allowed. Not adverse to purchasing an additional lens or different camera body if that is what is needed for a once in a lifetime trip.
    Current equipment is an EOS 60D, EF 15 Fisheye, EFS 10-22 F3.5-4.5, EFS 18-135 F3.5-5.6, EF 24-70 F2.8L II, EF 70-300 F4-5.6L IS.
What range would be most useful in large cathedrals and such without a flash? Thinking the 24-70 by itself would not have enough reach for some shots but it is wonderful in low light. My 70-300L is absolutely fantastic but not great in low light. Would you recommend I get the 70-200 F2.8 to pair up with the 24-70 for travel? Would I be better off purchasing a full frame camera like the 5D for it's low light abilities with my current lenses? Just stick with the kit 18-135 lens and put up with high ISO noise indoors? Thinking of taking my monopole instead of a tripod.
Any input from experienced travelers as to what worked best?

If it were me, for travel I'd take the 60D, 10-22mm and 18-135mm. Then I'd probably add one or two or a few reasonably fast prime lenses for low light/shallow depth of field purposes, choosing among 20/2.8, 24/2.8 IS, 28/1.8, 35/2 IS, 50/1.4, and 85/1.8. I'd also take a flash, since it will likely be useable at times. Monopod might be a nice option, too.
I have traveled by air within the past year with 5DII (w/grip), 20/2.8, 24-70, 28/1,8, 50/1.4, 135/2, 70-200/2.8, 300/4, 1.4X and one 580EX II. That and the accessories I use with the kit add up to approx. 25 lb. backpack (that does fit in an airline overhead compartment). That wasn't fun getting through the airport, but doable and I wasn't going to be walking around a whole lot with it otherwise.
It's different when only traveling by car. Then I take a ton of stuff. Lots of lenses, 3 to 6 cameras, two tripods, and more. Sometimes even location lighting gear (five monolights, stands, umbrellas, etc.).
Another option is to ship some stuff ahead. I've shipped my location lighting kit cross country on occasion. Wouldn't want to try to take it with me on an airline! It's in a large roller bag and weighs 85-90 lbs.
If I were going somewhere that support, repair and rentals weren't likely to be available, i might ship a spare camera and other gear ahead, to meet me there. Not likely to be a problem in England. But I prefer to keep at least a primary kit of gear with me and under my control. A monopod can go in a checked bag. But only carry on flashes, lenses, cameras, etc. If necessary, I'll wear a photographers vest to stash small items.

  • Would an 11" MacBook Air be more ideal for travelling purposes I.e backpacking?

Would an 11" MacBook Air be more ideal for travelling purposes I.e backpacking?

The most ideal yes, however you MUST use a cushion device to prevent your LCD from recieving pressure AND you must buy a waterproof bag etc to prevent it from getting wet in rain and bad humidity if backpacking outdoors.
Why your MacBook Air needs a warm coat too
While you should never store your notebook in a cold car for any significant time (couple hours or more), in cases where a notebook is being carried thru cold weather in a case, having a padded and zippered (not just a sleeve!) case is very important not just to protect your Macbook from a shock from being bumped or accidentally dropped, but for thermal protection. In coming in from a cold walk or environment, an unprotected and cold notebook is subject to condensation forming not only on the alloy casing but more importantly on internal parts and the logic board which is to be avoided at all costs. Namely when turned on and the fan kicks on and blows warm air around the cold logic board condensation can form and in worst cases either eventually produce a fault or lead to compounded problems where corrosion forms inside your Macbook.
For transporting in the cold, your notebook needs more than a sleeve, rather a padded / insulated carry case to prevent temperature fluctuation from causing condensation.
Extreme climate conditions that call for more than a simple notebook carry bag
For exotic travel, college campuses where distances between buildings in very rainy climates must be made, or in which one may have to travel any distances thru harsh snow, ice, or heavy rains, most all conventional carry bags designed for laptops are very inadequate. Such zippered or snapped bags both do not keep out very high humidity and do not protect much from a deep soaking in what is most often a cloth notebook bag.
Skyward facing zippers on most notebook bags are poor protection from water. Consider one of several options, that being a waterproof hard-plastic case designed for notebooks, or a waterproof rugged bag or case specifically designed to keep out harsh humidity and water. In the case of very thin watertight weather bags, these can often be used inside your existing notebook carry bag.

  • Identity Synchronization for Microsoft 1.0 password synchronization failure

    Hi
Ive installed Identity Synchronization for Microsoft 1.0, and I can synchronize all attribute mail, telephonenumber etc but I can not sync passwords! Between Active Directory and DS 5.2!!!
In the audit log of isw I have

but for a telephone number modification i have:

    Can anybody help ?
I have installed one connector for AD , and one connector for DS and a subcomponent, the user are linked and resync with success.
    Thanks

    Hi,
ISW does not propagate the new password value itself when a password change is detected in Active Directory. The log message quoted does not show any error.
Note that passwords are not synchronized during resync. However, when resync'ing from Active Directory to Sun ONE Directory, you can invalidate the passwords of the Sun ONE Directory accounts using the -i flag. The invalidation will force on-demand password synchronization to start when a user with invalidated passwords attempts authentication to Sun ONE Directory.
I would also highly recommend following the instructions in the troubleshooting section of the product documentation.
