Arrow key acts like command-C

I've got a classroom Mac that's behaving strangely. When you press the up arrow, it acts like a command-C. I've tried a different (known good) keyboard with the same result, so I know it's a setting in the computer somewhere. But I can't find it! How can I change this back to normal?

Sorry, I posted to the wrong thread.

  • Shift key working like Command key in iMovie '06 Clips Pane

I am trying to move a lot of clips at once within the Clips Pane. The Shift key is not working properly; instead, it acts like the Command key. When I click on one clip, then Shift-click a final clip, no range of clips get selected: instead, only THOSE TWO clips are selected. What could be happening?

  • F4 Key acts like it is stuck

I acquired a used MacBook Pro Model 1.1 running 10.5.5. The other day I noticed that my display showed the decrease sound widget like the F4 was being pushed. The system acts like the F4 key is in fact being pushed... if you raise the sound it goes right down again. i popped the key to make sure it wasn't stuck.. i used system preferences to make it so i had to use the fn key to make a function do the function.. and that is the wat all the function keys except f4 now operate
It would seem that I have some sort of hardware problem but any thoughts? No I don't have a warranty and no I am no where near a service center... I would be happy just to make it stop what it is doing

a bad head set was causing the problem

  • When I click on text in a page, an I-bar appears where I click which then can be moved with the arrow keys, just like a Word document.

I have reinstalled Firefox twice, each time downloading a new installer exe from the website. I have also updated all plug-ins. This is a continual problem, as this makes normal scrolling impossible because the arrow keys move the I bar.

  • Make Enter key act like Tab Key

Is there any way to make pressing the Enter key change the focus to the next field in the tab order? In other words, make the Enter and Tab keys act the same way?
    Thanks!
    Nelson

Hitting [Enter] key triggers "exit" event, so add the following code appropriately xfa.host.setFocus(TabTo); where 'TabTo' is the field name to set the focus. However you do need to match with the tabbing order in the form just to make sure [Enter] and [Tab] keys function similarly.

  • Alt and Shift keys act like "sticky" keys - don't work if held down

My 8830 Alt and Shift keys mysteriously stopped working normally, and now operate exactly how a one-thumbed person would love.
It seems I've activated some rare acessibility feature that I can't turn off. (Tried pulling battery.)
If I hold down the Alt or Shift keys and press another key (e.g. the "W") nothing happens - no character is typed.  BUT if I press the Alt key and release it, the up/down arrow icon appears in the upper right of the screen.  Then if I next push the W key I get a "1" and the icon disappears.  The next keypress of any key gives its regular (letter) function.
The same behavior applies to the right and left shift keys too, except the CAPS icon appears in the upper right.
How do I turn this "feature" off?
    Thanks!

I had the same problem in my BB 8100, i read this below, and it works to me too. The trackball seems to stay pressed or bad working so it makes the shift and alt not working. After this muy Alt and shift button returns to work correctly.
sorry, I´m not so good english writer.

I popped off the ring around the track-ball with a screw driver and cleaned the sensors. I also depressed the sensor on the circuitboard of the device with a metal tipped pen and things started working fine again. Rebooting and cleaning the track-ball had not helped until I manually pressed the circuitboard at which point everything returned to normal including track-ball clicking and having to press the Alt-key once every time I needed to use a number.
    hope that helps.

  • Selection Tool suddenly acting like Direct Selection Tool during click-and-drag

    Hello!
This morning, my Selection Tool (the filled-in arrow) is acting like a Direct Selection Tool (the hollow arrow), but only when I click and drag on a group.  It ends up select the anchors within the group rather than the whole group itself.
I've checked my preferences, quit and relaunched Illustrator a few times, and nothing seems to fix it.  The problem briefly went away a few minutes ago, but came back when I quit and relaunched for good measure.
It's happening in Illustrator CS 5.1.  I have CS6, and that version works fine, but I'm waiting on some plugins to be updated for it, so I'd like to use CS 5.1.  I'm also running the latest Suitcase Fusion 4.
Any input on this would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Does the cursor appear correct, do you have any other keys depresessed?
The CMD key will make selection tool into direct slection. What OS are you running, update as there was a modifier key problem through 10.6.5 - 10.6.7

  • Ibook G4 Keyboard Arrow Key

hi, maybe sombody has a helpful hint here?
I have an iBook G4, I've only had it since May. maybe April of 2005.
just one day ago, the left arrow key (also marked "home") stopped responding.
I can physically press the key just as always. Feels normal.
but it doesn't do anything. the cursor doesn't move left when it is pressed.
the other arrow keys work fine.
command+left arrow doesn't do anything either.
I'm not terribly abusive to the keyboard.
I use the up and down arrow keys more than the other arrow keys.
all the other keys on the keyboard respond fine.
    is something broken?
I lifted out the keyboard and there did not appear to be and dirt or debris of any kind. What do I do?
(I am in Tokyo, and there are 2 apple stores here, but I have never had good response from apple japan on the pone, quite cold actually.)

    Hi John,
    (that's hilarious)
ironically, I ended up doing exactly as you suggested just a day befor you posted! Actually, two days before because I'm in Tokyo, but I'm from the Austin area. The Tokyo Shibuya ward Apple Store is no exception to the world class service. I was concerened I would end up paying for a new keyboard, and fully expected that. Boy, was I surprised when they made my day....
not only was it free (they said still under warranty) but also they replaced it while I waited!
One tip for anyone in Tokyo who needs to get help from the Apple stores here, go early to make an appointment, because they get booked up fast!
This is a very densely populated city, and you can bet they have a 3rd store on the way, if not a fourth...
    Thanks John!
P.S. I had a Yikes G4 400 back in college, great machine, but did have bus errors a lot. Is yours upgraded (i presume) ? Do you or did you ever get those bus errors? (particularly in the old OS)

  • Irksome "sticky" arrow key problem- using 10.5.6 on 2.16ghz macbook (white)

recently, while using google earth, the globe/land started to run away scroll on me. i didn't know how to stop it; by instinct I'd press the arrow key the opposite direction to which it was scrolling, but that had no effect. if i zoomed in or out, that would stop it, but it would happen again moments later. I'd quit the app, thinking something was wrong with it somehow, and relaunch. it would happen again. i must've uninstalled and reinstalled google earth a dozen times and still, I'd get the same problem.
then, when playing in "second life", an app/game in which i use the arrow keys to move around, my avatar would keep running or spinning in the same direction until i tapped that same direction again. aha! i finally figured out how to stop this from happening; there was nothing wrong with google earth after all, since i could now make the runaway scrolling stop in "GE" too. still, this is a very aggravating nuisance.
I've never spilled anything on my keyboard, and all the arrow keys are like new, nice and springy.
i went into the universal access prefpane, and checked "sticky keys" then unchecked it. still get the same crap behavoir.
not sure what could be causing this. the hardware and software respond consistently to correct the problem once it happens (pressing the arrown key in the same direction as it's locked, or stuck in) but i don't know how it's being triggered. I've tried holding down the arrow keys, holding for 1 second, then off, 2 then off, etc., nothing consistently makes it happen; just using the arrow keys in an app that arrow keys "move you in". i've not experienced any runaway cursors when holding down an arrow key in any text apps. could it have anything to do with a 3D thing?
anyone with information how to fix this? this is extremely annoying even though i now know how to get the arrow keys "unstuck".
    thank you.
    2.16ghz macbook white Mac OS X (10.5.6)

i've figured out the problem. in case anyone else experiences a similar problem, mine was caused by a great little program called textexpander. alas, i can no longer use it now since the benefits are not worth having my runaway/sticky arrow keys.

Brand new 15" MacBook Pro Retina - unplugged from Thunderbolt Display and Keyboards today find keyboard alpha-numerics not working; except the function keys, delete key, tab key, command/ctrl/shift/alt/fn and arrow keys; and 7/8/9/u/o/j/l produce cursor nudges.

It's a new machine - and the Thunderbolt Display is meant to work with it. You need to just make an appointment at your local Apple Store and have them fix whatever is wrong.
If you like, you could always try a SMC reset and a PRAM/NVRAM reset to see if either of those will get your keyboard back in working order...

  • My arrow keys start start repeating without touching them and a string of periods are displayed in an entry field (e.g. credential to log in). Or if I type an arrow key, they immediately start repeating in perpituity. It's like a ghost in the machine.

After the last OS X update (a security update I think), two things happened:
my iMac would not boot (gray screen) or if it did boot, the mouse wasn't recognized and I couldn't mouse to the PW field to log in - nor did tabbing or any keystrokes get me there. I fixed this by unpludding peripherals (back up drive), but know I can't boot unless they are unplugged and it makes using TimeMachine a pain in the arse.
My wired, extended mac keyboard now types without me, primarily, as far as I can tell, the arrow key(s). .................................... So, for example, those periods you see here are because I touched the right arrow key and off it went until I pressed ESC. Also, sometimes they just start going off on their own. For example, I can be in sleep mode and all of a sudden the screen will wake and the PW field will start filling with periods, just like you see above. ***?
Seriously, you would think that apple would have a response for this. I have searched their support site and NOTHING. I've seen some older threads on reseting certain things. Does anyone have any summer 2013 updates?
    Thank You!!!

    kaeandcolesmon,
If you open the recovery drive (partition) it should only have a single folder (Recovery).
To make sure that your not saving restore points to that drive.
    See:
Start, Control Panel, System, System Protection tab. Make sure the D drive partition is set to OFF so that it does not save there.

  • I have a Belkin bluetooth keyboard attached to my Ipad 3. I would like to know if there is any way to have the arrow keys scroll down when browsing web pages?

I just got my Ipad 3rd generation a few days ago and for my case I got the bulky BELKIN Bluetooth keyboard. I notice that when I press down the arrow keys it does not seem to scroll down when searching a web browser or looking up web pages. However it works fine when scrolling down on office apps such as Pages. I'm wondering if is there a way to make the arrow keys on the keyboard scroll down when on an internet web page like my Mac does.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Control key at startup so computer acts like hard drive

It's control something so when a computer starts up it acts like a hard drive when connected to another computer so it's easy to transfer stuff. Control what? I thought it was T, but that's not right. Thank you.

Just the "t" key, no other key. That'll put you in Firewire Target Disk Mode...
