Arrrgghgh!! "Force Quitting" Aperture has become routine
I am processing 2-3 jobs of 100-300 images(most JPG) daily and am finding I need to slow up when doing things like pasting(stamping) image settings otherwise I get the SBOD(spinning beach ball of death).
My steps:
1. Cull entire project
2. Rotate each keeper in project (STAMPING a crop would be most helpful here!)
3. Crop and color/exposure correct via stamp(CMD-SHIFT-V)
I find if I stamp too quickly after the crop the SBOD tournament begins...
BTW a setting of setting the crop aspect to match the aspect of the image would be a time saver as well...
I would just go ahead and delete the vaults in Finder with Aperture CLOSED. Then start Aperture and remove the vaults in Aperture.
When a disk that is being used gets full it is hard to predict what behavior you will see and it might be different each time it happens. So it is possible that the symptoms you had might have been caused by running out of disk space, really no way to say for certain. What you can say is that running out of or low of disk space is a condition you really want to avoid.
The vault like the library is really a folder containing lots of folders and files so deleting it is not as simple a task as deleting a single file. However when I go to remove a vault in Aperture I get the following dialog
Which shows both Remove and Remove and Delete options. If I select just Remove the vault is removed from Aperture but remains on the disk. Did you not see the same thing?
Anyway given all you've been through you're doing pretty good. You have your library intact and a backup of it. I'd just go ahead and delete the vaults make sure you have enough room on the disk and then create new vaults. You should be good to go after that,
good luck

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and I have Aperture 3.1.3. Now after I import pics from my camera I get a dialogue box so large that I can't see the eject card button. Consequently, I can't get rid of the dialogue box without having to do a force quit on Aperture. How do I fix?
I can drag the dialog box, but I can't move it up far enough to get to the eject card button. The dialogue box contains all the jpeg Numbers I am trying to upload. It has never done that before. It used to be just a smal dialogue box with no jpeg numbers in it.
It is even difficult to get to the Finder with the Dialague box is open. I have to force quit aperture.
Any ideas would be appreciated. -
I have to Force Quit Aperture all the time
Whenever I sit down to edit photos, Aperture hangs and I have to Force Quit and start again. This happens all the time. I used to think it happens only when I process raw images, but I've found that it happens with jpegs too. Apple once told me I should Repair Permissions and/or Repair Database and/or Rebuild Database. I did all three last night. This morning Aperture hung on the first picture I tried to crop. I am starting to get so frustrated that I am thinking I should change software because Apple doesn't seem to care about this product as I could find no support numbers to call.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?Hi jimchall -- welcome to the Aperture user-to-user forum.
I think many people have experienced similar frustration. Determining what's causing your problems is going to take time, however.
My number one suggestion is: don't force quit Aperture. Which brings up the question, how do you know Aperture is hung up? Until your problems are sorted, it's a good idea to keep the Aperture Activity Window open -- it will keep you semi-informed about what Aperture is up to. (If you are comfortable with computers, I recommend also using iStat Menus 3, or equivalent, to monitor your memory, disk, and CPU & GPU status.)
Aperture does a lot of work in the basement (as it were) while you are busy (or not) decorating the upper floors. This is most apparent after large imports (of, for instance, an iPhoto Library), when the downstairs work can completely suspend any work being done upstairs. No notification is given to the user when this happens -- you see the spinning pinwheel, and the Force Quit utility will even report that Aperture is not responding -- but, in many many cases, Aperture is, in fact, working. Let it work. In my experience with Aperture, force-quitting almost always makes problems worse, and should be avoided.
Some of the first problem areas to rule out are from hardware. What computer are you running Aperture on? How much RAM? How big a drive? How much free space on that drive? Where is your Library located? Are you having any problems running any other software? Are you using any unusual peripherals? Is your network in any way involved in your Aperture set-up?
Then, of course, software: are Aperture and OS X completely up-dated? Have you modified the OS in any way? Has Aperture ever worked properly?
The next general trouble-shooting steps are to (temporarily) disable two of the more processor-intensive parts of Aperture. Go to the Preferences dialog, and turn off "Faces", and turn off "Share Previews". (Once Aperture is working properly for you, these can be turned back on.)
Then reboot, launch Aperture -- and let it run for several hours (keep you computer plugged in and set to not sleep). It can take many hours -- days even -- to completely process a very large import.
You have taken the steps to confirm that you Library is healthy. Stick with it, and with the help of the people on this forum you should be able to figure out what is holding you up.

Aperture has become extremely slow - how can it be speeded up ?
With the loss of 32bit version and following updates Aperture has ground to a halt. I have set up a new library, cleared settings, and have a max of 2000 images in the library at any one time. Problem occurs with 10mb RAW files in folders of 200 images, never mind larger 22mb RAW files
I have also gone through Disc Utility to clean up my Mac
I cannot run Photoshop CS6 and Aperture at the same time (with all other apps closed). Aperture crashes at least once a day !
Any help to speed up Aperture would be appreciatedNick-Thirteen wrote:
If the RAM upgrade doesn't improve performance sufficiently I'll look at trying to replace the internal HD with a SSD via a UK supplier, if it is relatively straight forward !
If you are comfortable with removing the base plate of the MBP and carefully using the proper mini drivers, then it is very easy to replace the HDD with a SSD. I did it in my MacBook Pro 17" (late 2011) with an OWC SSD as well as installing 16 GB OWC RAM (even though Apple only specs 8 GB). Works like a charm and Apple Hardware Test passes both without issue.
For some video tutorials on the procedures for your specific model, see this page:

Procedure will apply with whatever RAM and SSD compatible with your machine. -
Recent upgrade 3.2.1 for Aperture has created a multitude of issues
After upgrading Aperture to 3.2.1, I am seeing images oriented sideways, upside down and blurry, Masters without the adjustments that were made, although when I click on the image the corrected image shows above. Images are missing when I try to email or upload to Facebook, etc., although they are in my Library. Called Apple support and I was told to try the Option/Command/Aperture route and then try tp rebuild and repair through that. Tried all 3 options, no changes except now all the photos are out of order within the albums!!! I am so frustrated!!! Please help!
I have also had a lot of trouble since upgrading to 3.2.1.
None of my Vaults will update anymore. After hours of Aperture trying (something that should take minutes only, Aperture becomes non-responsive. Indeed, the ForceQuit application stated that "Aperture is not responding", and the ActivityMonitor stated that Apertue experienced "6 recent Hangs".
Per Apple Support I force-quit Aperture and ran the Aperture Library First Aid, first running "Repair Permissions" (which stated that Aperture was "changing ownership of all files to current user" !!! - which did not resolve my issue. Then I ran "Repair Database", which did nothing either. I simply can not update my vaults anymore.
This is beyond frustrating. I encountered this very problem one year ago… where 3 of my vaults became unusable and had a corrupt Library - losing a year of changes made to references files. Hopefully the folks at Apple will address these issues soon. -
10.5.3 won't Shut Down too often and have to Force Quit!
Right after 10.5.3 update, my iMac 24" often won't Shut Down at all, forcing me to use the ON/OFF button. Software that used to work fine like Firefox 2.00.14, PowerPoint 10.1.9, and You Synchronize 2.1.1 now lock up often and can't be Force Quit when they become unresponsive like before. This pretty much means the machine won't shut down either.
I've repaired permissions and all of the hard drives checked out fine. Any idea how to correct these unpleasant problems? After further investigation it seems to be related (at least in my case) to a bug that affects firefox and 10.5.3 update.

Does SL/PS experience the force quit problem?
I still experience the looooooong delay if PS crashes before it will actually quit or force quit. Has the SL/PS combo fixed this problem?
thanks.
ps cs4 10.5.8The looooong delay is the Apple crash reporter running, gathering data to send in the report.
For some users, it does seem to take longer to run on SnowLeopard than it did on Leopard.
But it's entirely Apple's code - Adobe can't do anything about Apple's crash reporter.
I profiled it, just to be sure -- and all the time is spent in Apple's code, our code doesn't do anything until it prompts you to send the report to Adobe. -
My Safari browser is stuck on a webpage "survey.tubgalley.xyz...." and there is a pop up with "Congratulations, you are today's lucky winner, Click OK to continue". ( I have not of course clicked on it!).
I have tried quitting Safari, and shutting down my computer.
I have block pop ups enabled in preferences.
I have Mac OS X 10.7.5
2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide, AdwareMedic, or Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.)
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
The facts are:
1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
2. There is no anti-malware that can detect everything targeting the Mac.
3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
protection against malware.
5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware. -
Aperture 3 and photostream force quit
I have latest updates to aperture applied. I share a library with iphoto. If i try to enable photostream from preferences a spinning beachball starts and the application becomes unusable. I have to force quit. Restarting doesnt fix it. I have repaird and rebuilt the database. I also notice that while the application shows not responding their is also a photstream process running that is using up 100% of cpu? in the past i have tried delting preference files to no avail. Really need help here.
I put them back but still need your awesome help in getting it to work in my current user account.
Working in a different user account was meant as a test - a basic trouble shooting measure- not as a fix, see: Isolating an issue by using another user account
Your result tells, that Aperture, your hardware, and your system are probably o.k., but some settings, startup items, Aperture plug-ins, preference panes used in your user account may be problematic.
I'd start with trouble shooting the preferences and presets, as described in
Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics
Remove the file "com.apple.Aperture.plist" from your user library to the Desktop, and if that does not help, remove the presets.
Remember to log off and on, before removing the preferences.
The user preferences are hidden by default; reveal them from the Finder's "Go" menu:
Quit Aperture, if it is running:
Open the user library by using the Finder's "Go > Go to Folder" menu and hold down the options-key, until "Library" appears in the drop down menu. Select it In the widow that will open, scroll down to "Preferences"
From the "Preferences" folder remove "com.apple.Aperture.plist".
Then try to launch Aperture again. -
Itunes hangs during radio streaming and has to be forced quit
Itunes plays radio streams ok for a while, but eventually the music stops. Pressing stop to restart the url doesnt work, the whole of itunes becomes frozen and unresponsive and needs to be force quit everytime.
Its very frustrating as when you restart itunes it needs to then check the whole library.
Playback is fine for all hard drive content. Happens on both ethernet and airport connection.
Cant seem to find other people having the same kind of issue.
Have reinstalled itunes several time to no avail.
Any ideas?I think I have the same problem and I am pretty sure I can give a recipe for replicating it: listen to any radio stream; when the stream gets interrupted for buffering (if you have multiple windows open, you probably won't notice the little dialog box popping), press the "PLAY" key on your keyboard. Voilà. iTunes hanged.
I've submitted countless bug/crash reports on OS 10.5 and OS 10.6. Something changed in Lion (10.7) in that even though iTunes still *has* to be force-quit, it doesn't count it as a crash and so there's no prompt to submit a report.
Frankly, I am kind of amazed that this years-old bug which probably affects just about everyone listening to streams is not fixed already.
10.7 (and all previous OS versions)

The Force Quit-Not Responding Issue has not been resolved yet?
I too keep having Force Quit issues in many apps - Final Cut, Photoshop, Mail, etc. If I do not use these apps for a while then go to them, they hang. Force quit does not work - as the app cannot be restarted after force quitting. The only solution is to reboot - you cannot even restart as nothing will force quit the apps. This has now become annoying as I am rebooting at least once or twice per day.
This occurred only recently - after the 10.5.4 update.
Checking the boards, this is a problem for many many users and still not resolved in most cases. Anyone have more information on this issue?Hello Jon:
As far as I can tell, there is not a general problem. That is not to say you are not having problems.
If you have not done so, try these things (in sequence, if one fixes it, stop):
Run permission repair.
Run repair disk from your software install DVD.
Download the combo 10.5.4 updater and apply it (even if you did that before).

hi after updating to Mountain Lion, it becomes difficult to quit Mail, always have to Force Quit. And while Mail is on standby, the fan keeps on running full power, the laptop is hot. Why is this happening?
If your computer was hot it wasn't asleep - it either didn't go to sleep or it work up after you put it to sleep. I've seen both things happen. First, read this article and follow the instructions.
1) For the next few days/weeks pay attention to the blinking light on the front of your computer when you close the lid. Don't put the computer into your backpack/case until it begins to blink. Wait a minute or so after it starts to blink to make sure it doesn't stop blinking - the signal it woke back up.
2) having followed the above instructions, if you take the computer out and it is hot again or if you take it out and discover it has powered down (you'll know this because when it starts up the battery will be drained and you'll see a progress bar over a ghostly display that will eventually become normal) immediately start the Console program and perform a search on 'sleep' and then 'wake'. This should bring up all the recent log files about sleep state changes (going to sleep and waking up). You should see one for when you put the computer to sleep and put it away and the next one should be just after you got it out. You'll find at least one though that shouldn't be there. That will tell you when the computer work up (when it shouldn't have) and might give a clue as to why.
One of the whys could be a magnet that is making the computer think the lid has been opened. -
When accessingh iPhoto all I get is "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable" How do I regain access to iPhoto. All I get is an instruction to "quit"
Hi LarryHN,
I was loading images via a flash memory card which was inserted into a USB holder – during the 'download' the connection was broken [faulty USB connection]. I then re-inserted the card via the USB holder the connection was 're-broken' with a screen message indicating that 'force eject' was an option. I clicked the 'force eject' option and when I re-inserted the card/holder 120 images [approx] were missing and when I tried to open iPhoto the screen messages detailed above were displayed.
Current software is: iPhoto v9.2.3; Snow Leopard v10.6.8.
Using TD's Option 1:
i.e. “hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database” resulted in .
"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable" with a window request “quit”
& Option 2 “Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function”.
Resulted in the following message:
“The library could not be loaded because an error occurred. The library database could not be loaded; no such table RKVersionFaceContent. The album data file for the library 'iPhoto Library' could not be read” - [my italics]
Followed your instructions, re. 'new library' and it worked perfectly. All I have to do is select 'iPhoto Library2' and proceed as normal.
Thank You very much for your excellent advice and solution.
p.s. And this is completely 'off the wall' as I don't expect a positive outcome, but is it possible that all the images 'deleted' from my flash memory card could be somewhere in/on my HDD? If so, how would I proceed to recover them?
Many thanks again.

Pages on my iPad3 has become very slow to open documents after upgrading to ios7.
I posted on here about this a few weeks back and someone suggested force-closing Pages -- and that does indeed enable me to open things -- but I have had to force-close many times in the last 24 hours, which is worrying. Are there any other suggestions?
I am sometimes also finding that, when I have been writing something and then click on "documents" the screen goes blank, there is a wait of around a minute and then the same document is re-displayed, before clicking "documents" again lets me look at other documents -- which is a pain if I am trying to move between documents repeatedly. Again, words of wisdom on this would be great.
Pages under iOS6 opened quickly, and there was an immediate loss of performance when I upgraded. I am finding this very frustrating because I don't feel that the new Pages has added to the facilities I was using, but a slowness to open documents is frustrating.
Thanks

For the past week, every time I try to open Safari I've been receiving the message saying that Safari has quit unexpectedly.
A dialog box comes up giving me the option to ignore, report or reopen.
When I try to reopen the same box just keeps coming up.
I've reported it and another box comes up with a '?' . I've checked this and it gives suggestions for how to rectify the issue. I've looked at all options but none answer my problem. One suggested that I force quit in the system preferences. However I can't get the safari icon to stay on the top bar long enough for me to click on it in order to force the quit.
I wonder if anyone else has been having this problem and can suggest a way to solve it.
Thank you very much,
