Art History Brush problem

After following numerious tutorials and looking at Adobe help, I cannot get the AHB to work in CS3. Get an error message saying there is a programe error. The ordinary History Brush will work for me just fine, but thats not what I want.
1) Snapshot for history state
2) new layer to paint on (either empty or filled with plain background)
3) AHB sellected and paraminters set for brush
What am I doing wrong - any suggestions PLEASE

Have now answered my own problem. Art History brush is only available to 8bit images unlike the History Brush which will work with 8 & 16bit. Could find no info regarding this in Adobe help, or anywhere else!
Found out by using CS4 when the same error message told me what the problem was! . . . . . . . . so easy when you know how.

  • Rules for applying source data when using the art history brush

I am trying to discover if a Snapshot made with the History feature can be used by the Art History Brush on more than the Snapshot's corresponding layer.
So,  I have an image with a background layer and a copy of that background layer - two layers.  I then make a Snapshot from the second layer and apply a fill colour to the second layer.  Next I paint on that filled layer with the Art History Brush.  Now here's the issue - having completed painting on that second layer I would like to be able to duplicate that second layer so it becomes a third layer and paint on to it with the Art History Brush using a new brush type but the same original Snapshot.  My experience so far is that the Art History Brush and History function will not allow me to paint with the original Snapshot on this duplicated layer.  In other words, you cannot paint on to the third layer using your original Snapshot.
Is this correct, please?  I had hoped that the snapshot I originally made would be available to use with the Art History Brush on any layer in your layer-stack but this seems not to be the case.  It will only work with the layer from which the original Snapshot was created.
I can of course create a new snapshot of the duplicated, painted second layer - now called the third layer - but this only enables me to paint with the image in the second layer (from which the second Snapshot has been created).  I want to be able to paint on to the third layer with the original Snapshot but this it will not let me do.
If anyone is kind enough to read through all this and follow my exposition I'd be really grateful to know if my understanding is correct.
    Thanks.

If you don't make the new snapshot with the icon but with the palette menu, you will get a window with 3 options.
Try which of the three solves your problem.
Sorry, my  menu is in german, but you see the position.

  • Texture attributes not saving with an Art History brush tool preset.

I am sure that in the past Texture settings saved when I loaded a saved Art History Brush tool preset.  But suddenly, the Texture setting - specifically Depth, is not being remembered.  In other words - I have saved an Art History Brush as a Tool Preset. I have then used some other brushes and experimented with texture including the Depth setting.  When I go back to the saved tool preset, the Texture Depth setting has changed to whatever it was when I last used it - not its saved value.  I thought the point of Tool Presets is that they save all brush characteristics.  Maybe I have got this wrong.
Help or info would be much appreciated.  I'm using CS6.
...this is weird.  The tool presets and their Texture attributes work fine in CS5.  Maybe I need to reinstall CS6.

...I reinstalled CS6 and imported old preferences.  The problem of reluctant attributes persisted after installation.  The answer appears to have been to reset the preferences.  Texture settings now behaving themselves.   I should have tried this first.  Oh well.

  • Art History Brush Tool

The art history brush tool doesn't work after saving and turning off my Mac. Re-opended my file from yesterday and the Art History Brush Tool paints in white, not sure how to continue with the brush tool?

I am trying to continue to paint with the Art History Brush. As per the picture caption you can see how much I need to finish (image with out background).
Duplicating the Background layer and taking a new Snapshot in the History panel works but it doesn't fill in all the white spaces as something is in the first layer that was created yesterday.

  • Art history brush

The tolerance feature of art history brush tool is explained in the reference as following:
"A high tolerance limits paint strokes to areas that differ considerably from the color in the source state or snapshot"
When I try to use this tool on a image's original state (no difference with the history state) with the 100% tolerance setting, some of the areas can be brushed.
So, I'm a little bit confused about the function of the "tolerance" slider.
Thanks a lot for your explanations ...

    Thanks a lot Grant ...
Let me tell about my situation ...
I have an image in PS now.
    A newly opened file,
So, there is just a single state in the history panel ... "open"
I'm selecting the snapshot created when opening the file ... as the source for the art history brush,
According to the reference ... I can not brush with the 100 % tolerance ... because the current state and the snapshot state which is used as the source for the art history brush are same ... exactly same.
The reference says so, am I wrong?
But, I can do brushing with the art history in this case ... at least for a part of the image.
Ok, I can not brush for the other part ... but I think that I should not to be able to brush at all at 100 % tolerance setting.
    Am I wrong?
    Or ...
I'm suspecting that ... I can not understand the reference properly.

  • Art History Brush help please

From what I have read I think that I should be able to use as a source for the Art History brush any snapshot I have taken of an earlier layer. But when I tick the left hand box (ie put the Art History icon there)to make a snapshot active and then put the mouse cursor over the top layer of the image, I get an error message saying "Could not use the art history brush because the history state lacks a corresponding layer". But I can paint into it (the top layer) using the original image (with the art history brush icon next to it). In other words, I cannot use the art history brush with any snapshot as source.
What I am trying to do is have available two or three layers with different retouching treatments of the same image as snapshots so that I can paint them in to a new blank, but color filled, top layer. So, I want to have for example, a layer with little detail, another with lots of detail and another with increased color saturation and be able to add these by art histor brush into the blank top layer (which is filled with a background color).
I thought this should be possible. At the moment all I can use is the original image as an art history source.
    I'm using CS4.
Grateful for a little light in my darkness. Thanks.
    David

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. I had nearly given up hope of working this out and there was no mention of the solution in anything I have read about the AHB and Snapshots.
On a PC, Alt is the the key.
    Much obliged.

  • Please help! I need help with history brush problem

I'm completely new to photoshop but I have done this thing before:
    open image
    >ctrl J
    >>select new layer
    >>>select Curves
    >>>>adjust accordingly
    >>>>>ctrl+backspace (pic goes back to original color)
    >>>>>>select history brush
this paints in that curve layer i guess...kind of like I'm putting a hole in my orginial to see the change that I made in the curves layer but only on the places I want
So for some reason this isn't working anymore! And i have no idea why! Now this error pops up: Could not use the history brush because the history state does not contain a corresponding layer.
    Im using CS4 extended
    What am I doing wrong?

As stated, set your History Brush source.
Also always be careful to note which layer is active after you do an undo operation.

  • Illustrator Art History Swatches

    Hi there,
Does anyone know how the illustrator developers decided on the colors used in the swatches that make up the art history default swatches? Do you know if an algorithm of some sort was used, or if the colors were chosen just on a subjective idea of what colors were used in artworks created during that era?
Or, does anyone know the best person to contact in order to find this out?
    Thanks!

  • Problems with "history brush" in CS5.1

I have somehow have activated the history brush in Photoshop CS5.1  Now it appears in all of my files in the history box and I don't know how to de-activate it.  Is there some trick?  Did it get stuck there because I took a snapshot of something?  I tried to re-set preferences and it is still there.  I am thinking about uninstalling Photoshop but would really like someone to help me turn off the history brush.

  • History brush no longer working

Considering myself an "advanced newbie" (or maybe I'm just a regular newbie considering how much there is to learn) in Photoshop I might have missed something obvious here, but hoping someone will point me in the right direction....
This is in Photoshop CS3 in MacOS 10.4.11 on a Powerbook G4 by the way.
I came across a guide on how create black/white photos with a dash of color in selected areas: http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/mono-with-a-dash-of-colour-photoshop-cs2-tutor ial/
So I took a picture of a tree, wanting to make the background black/white while the tree and a section of the grass should be colored. I wanted to try to make the edits non-destructive, so I did this with new layers, but I'm not sure I did it right. Here's a screenshot of my layers: http://img389.imageshack.us/my.php?image=layerspg1.png
"Background" is the actual photo (in color)
"Hue/saturation 1" is an adjustment layer which desatured the colors
"Hist.brush (tree)" is the layer where I painted back the tree's colors
"Hist-brush (grass)" is likewise the layer where I painted back the grass' colors
Having selected the tree or grass layer I've used the "History brush" tool to paint back the colors, and the "Eraser" tool to remove anything I've painted too much back. This has worked fine, and I've been working at it for many hours yesterday, saving (as PSD) as I went along. But today nothing happens when I paint an area with the history brush!!!
I really don't know what the history brush does, other than it worked getting back the colors -is the problem that I saved the file, quit Photoshop, then opened it up again today, given that the brush has something to do with history?
Please don't tell me I have to start from scratch, painting back all those details once again :-(

The History Brush States and Snapshots are only available while a file remains open.
Once you close the file, your States and Snapshots will disappear so work on Layers and save the file with unflattened layers.

  • History Brush usage

After converting the image i have to Black and White, ( Orginally it was in colour ) , I tried using the History Brush but a pop-up appeared, saying that " Could not use the history Brush because History State does not contain a corresponding layer."
I realised it was the layer problem after some testing. i switched to the Background layer and this time, the circle appeared. but when i went over the image, nothing happened.
Thx in advance for your help. =)

C.pfaffenbichler's suggestion is right on the money.
To expand a bit on why you're seeing no difference:
It is simply impossible for Photoshop to return the part of the image you're brushing over to it's prior colored state with the History Brush, because you have changed the mode of the entire image from color to grayscale.
That it tries to work at all between a selected state where the image was in color and the current state where the image is grayscale is a testament to how hard Adobe has worked to make the History Brush useful in interpreting the "before" data into your current image mode.
The end result, in your case, is that it's simply re-doing the same color to grayscale conversion on the same pixels, so that it looks to you like it's doing nothing.

  • CS2 - 6D art pen brushes rotate the wrong way

I'm wondering if this is the normal behaviour of the 6d art pen brushes that come with Illustrator CS2. When I use them with my 6d art pen, they rotate in the opposite direction as I rotate my pen. Does anyone know a way around this? The pen works fine in Painter and Photoshop.
My setup is Macbook Santa Rosa 2.2 Ghz, 4 gb ram, windows xp home sp2 (up to date), Cintiq 12 WX with the 6D art pen (art marker).

Dear CS3 and CS4 photoshop users,
I hope I can straighten out the whole confusion with the 6D art pen ROTATION feature not working. (not a solution but clarify)
Although we appreciate all forms of opinions, I have a message for people saying that rotation feature will work when you set the brush settings correctly. WE_ARE_NOT_NEW at this. Many of us have been using the rotation feature with CS3 perfectly fine, and yes, we know how to set it up. Thank you for your tips but IT IS NOT working as it should. I don't know whether it is defendant with: x64 or x32 syst on our part, driver problem with wacom, or in fact with the CS4. I will tell you what I did and what I got however.
X64 Vista Ult. 6G RAM, Quad core, both Intuos 3 and Cintiq 20wsx.(Cintiq is my primary and the only one I use now a days and I don't have both plugged at the same time. However, I have tried with Intuos3 separately, and it won't work) I uninstalled old wacom driver and updated to the latest (5days old), remade brush settings fresh with rotation setting (not just using my own saved preset from CS3) and it still WON"T WORK... so there it is. Hope this clarifies the issue so that the TECH can help us (please) and not think that we are all confused.

  • Why is the History Brush only painting white on my picture instead of the colors from my text file?

I am working on a project for my online class and am having difficulties with the History Brush.  Note that both files are identical in size etc.
    1.  I created a color text file and saved it with a specific name.
    2.  I copied an existing photo from iPhoto, as I couldn't import into PhotoShop,  and pasted it in a new file.  I then removed the white background layer and then saved it with its now specific name and closed the file.
    3. I re-opened the Color Text File.
    4.  I then re-opended my photo.
    5.  I performed a "Select All" from the menu bar of my active Photo then selected Edit - Copy and then closed my Photo file.
    6.  From my Color Text File I selected Edit and then Paste from the menu bar.
    7.  I selected Layer and Flatten Image from the menu bar.
    8.  I right clicked the background image from the Layers Panel and created a snapshot (which is my photo)
    9.  I selected the History brush and verified that this also displayed in the gray box associated with the Color Text file within the History Panel.
    10.  I verified that my photo image was displayed in my work area.
    11.  I start to fill the photo with my History Brush and the only color I get is White.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

You seem to think that a History State equals a Layer.  That couldn't be farther from the truth.

…We are then suppose to click the History brush from the Tools Panel and verify that the little box next to the Tie-Dye image is selected and displays the History Brush.  Now the document area should display the photo, at this point we are suppose to paint the photo with 1 stroke.  The painted colors would be that from the Tie-Dye image…
That's not clearly phrased, but it sounds totally wrong.  Again, a History State will not just show you what you just pasted, but your entire image, with ALL its layers.
Normally, to use the History Brush one goes back one step in the History Panel AFTER you have created your snapshot, so that you'll be selectively applying the changes to your image as it was before the filter.  Here's an example:
You've finished editing an image.  Fine.  Now you apply an Unsharp Mask filter (to the whole image, of course) and immediately create your Snapshot.
Now you step back in the History Panel to the state BEFORE you applied the sharpening.  You make sure your History Brush is targeting the sharpened Snapshot, but you start painting on the History State BEFORE you applied the sharpening.
Now you can start applying selective sharpening with your History Brush in whatever blending mode you wish.  For selective sharpening, the History Brush in Luminosity blending mode gives you fantastic results.
Just remember:  History States are not like layers at all.
In my opinion that's a lousy instructor who would make you use the Clipboard to illustrate the use of the History Brush.  … but that's just me.

  • Could not use history brush because the history state lacks a corresponding channel Please HELP CS6

Everytime I try to use my history brush, that error pops up and I have no clue why. If I try to just open a blank document and use the brush it does not give me this error and I can "use" the brush but you cant see anything on the project. Anyways, so when this error happens im trying to do a project and say I place a file(picture) into the project and this is the very first thing I do. I place it, then I size the image down some. I then make a new layer to use the brush for behind the picture and then this is when I get the error. I have no clue what is wrong can someone please help me I'm desperate:(.

The way you've described it, one gets the distinct impression you do not have a clue as to what the history brush does and how to use it.
You need to read up on it.  Read the Help files and google for tutorials.
First you need to create an image (with actual pixels in it), edit it as desired, then make a snapshot of the edited image, then target the snapshot with the history brush tool, then go back in the History panel to the step before your edits and selectively paint your edits in with the History Brush.
