Art w/ Transparency Can't Be Flattened

I'm trying to copy artwork from one of my artboards over to InDesign and I keep getting an error message when trying to paste into InDesign:
"Linked artwork that interacts with transparency cannot be flattened. Embed the artwork (using the Links palette) before flattening..."
I've done a little searching for a few key terms in this error message but haven't run across anything that really explains to me what I need to do or how I address this issue.
When I look at my options in the Link palette all I see are the following options:
     Relink
     Go To Link
     Update Link
     Go To Original
Nothing in here that I can see mentions embedding artwork.
What am I missing?

Unfortunately I don't have the Embed button in CS4 as you do in CS2 but I do see the menu in the same place for the Links palette.
Below is what I see. Granted I could have some option/view turned off but I've been through my menu options a few times now and didn't see it. But then again, I didn't realize I had a menu option in the Links palette either.

Can we selectively flatten form fields in a PDF file?

I have a PDF with some form fields in it. I want to selectively flatten a few form fields in the PDF using a java API. I have checked the documentation and found a method transformPDF in the OutputServiceService. But this method flattens all the form fields in the PDF document.
Can we selectively flatten form fields in a PDF file? If yes how?
This was possible in Adobe Document Server V6.

You will need an event in the form that will indicate that you want the flattening done. Once you determine what that is it is simply a single statement for each field:
fieldname.access = "readOnly";
Now when the form is rendered, the user will not be able to get access to these fields.

How can I stop Flattening from converting to ICC color?

Our new printer requires PDFs to be submitted as PDF version 1.3 (Acrobat 4). In order to use this setting when we "Save as optimized" we must choose the "Transparency" flattening setting. But every option I've tried for flattening keeps converting the colors to ICC profiles, and the printer also refuses to accept files with ICC profile colors. I can't find any place to select this or not select it as an option, but every option within the Transparency dialog seems to result in ICC profiles. How do I save a flattened PDF from Acrobat without converting the colors to ICC? (These are files submitted by advertisers to our publication, so I have no control over the creation of the original PDF. I just need to re-save these in a format which Quad Graphics will accept, which means flattened and at PDF version 1.3)

Maybe I'm misunderstanding something. DeviceCMYK or even "none" still result in ICC colors when I preflight the file afterwards. I can't find any setting for flattening the file that doesn't also somehow convert colors. Is there any way to flatten the PDF and have it leave the colors completely untouched? Or maybe some way to re-save the file after flattening to strip the ICC profiles back out of the document? I suspect I might be doing something "wrong" that can be fixed somehow.
If I convert text to outline I can open the file in Illustrator and just re-save it, and all the ICC warnings go away. What might Illustrator be doing that Acrobat isn't? I can go through this workaround if necessary, but I prefer to do this in a single step from within Acrobat, without getting extra applications involved, if at all possible.

Masking and clip art with transparent backgrounds

I'm new to iWeb and am creating a travel blog. So far love the simplicity of it. However, when I try to add clip art type images or graphics with transparent backgrounds I always get a white border around them. I have tried to mask or crop the border out but no dice. Any help?!
Also, if anyone can recommend a good source for travel or photo related clip art let me know. The iWeb "Roadtrip" template seems to have some cute items - maps, scissors, tape, etc. - but there is not much there.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. That's the default border for added image files. Go to the Inspector/Graphic pane and take off the frame/stroke that is added by default.

I've always wanted to obtain and have perfect resolutioned cover art for my albums. I have been and downloaded albums from the iTunes store, and they come with really great cover art. How can I get cover art as precise and clean as the albums have on ther

My problem mainly concerns cover art.
There have been times when I downloaded albums from the iTunes store to find its cover art it is absolutely beautiful, and is absolutely 100% un stretched. Whereas when I have gotten images for a specific album from Google Images it's terribly pixelated and totally disgusting.
Is there a way for me to obtain cover art for my albums that is has clarity equal to the cover art on the iTunes store albums.
Or will it basically boil down to I can only get that cover art by downloading my albums off the store?

If you had a complete pre-problem backup of your library you could restore that. On the assumption that isn't possible I have a script called ExportImport that could in principle be adjusted to save the relevant data from a backup of the library database and then reimport that data into the current library. I have converted most of my windows media files to itunes. However I had to close it down about 3 quarters of the way through. It then processed the album art. How can I convert the files that it didn't finish doing the first time? thanks

hope you can help me. I helped my sister convert her window media files to itunes and set up an account for her. Unfortunately her computer is really slow and it was really late and we had to turn it off. It processed some of the album art for the files that it had converted. However, some songs were not converted and because there was quite a few left, I don't really know which ones did not get converted as I selected all of the folders. How do I find out which ones I have left to convert and put the rest of the songs onto itunes for her please? Or are they on the itunes still as they showed up initially on itunes in the list to be converted.

You could convert them all again and then dedupe, or use a Windows search to reveal all the WMA files and then try to work out which still need to be converted. If you're lucky iTunes would have processed the imports in alphabetical path order so it would just be a matter of working out where it had got up to...

Album art, separate drive, can't update

I have searched the forums and have found many old posts concerning some of my issues. Nothing current, as far as I can tell
I am running (connected, not wireless) Front Row from my iBook in my den to my amplifier. It is streaming music from my Mac Pro. It works very well, music, playlists, movies, with the exception of the cover art. There is none. I have all the art on the host computer.
I have a Mac Pro holding all my music for iTunes. They are located:
data drive>music>iTunes>iTunes Music.
I also moved the Library, xml, and Album Art files to:
Data Drive>Music>iTunes folder. I then deleted the original location files.
iTunes recreates the Album Art file, iTunes Library and iTunes xml file in the home music folder
On my iBook, from Applications, Front Row is listed as Version 1. I have tried several times to upgrade to the current version 2.1.6. I go through all the steps and it says the install was successful. However it always returns with version 1. I also tried version 2.1.3 and I was informed I did not need this update.
I have read that there is a bug in Front Row that will not allow cover art to be seen.

The "version" of Front Row in your Applications folder will ALWAYS report as version "1.0". That is simply a launcher file but not the true application. The actual Front Row application is buried in your System folder. If you open Front Row and check the Settings, you can find the version you're using there.

(Solved) rxvt transparency "can't determine colour"

So I have been trying to add one of those fancy transparent background terminals to my system. But I've stumbled upon a problem and google hasn't been so kind as to provide an answer.
The true transparency refuses to work. I'm using the cairo composite manager, openbox and the xf86-video-ati drivers.

And the rxvt terminal is not transparent. The whole "can't determine colour" bit has me stumped and google won't find me anything useful.
Probably related to this issue, I tried to manually configure my Radeon drivers (HD5850), but I am unsure if I did so correctly.

I'm not familiar with the rxvt package, but I did just install it and replicated your issue. This setup works perfectly however with urxvt (package: rxvt-unicode). Perhaps the rxvt package was compiled with different options that do not allow these settings.

Safari drop down menu transparent, can't read anything

For the past several months, the suggestion drop down menu in Safari has been extremely transparent and impossible to read. Running OS X 10.10 and Safari 8.0.3. on a MacBookPro 13in Mid-2012
Not really sure how to fix this.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:

The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Sending spot color separated art to DPM, can 1 color be sent lighter?

I have a two spot color PDF (black and a PMS green). The photos are grayscale and look fine on the screen but when I send it to our DPM and look at the preview there, the photos are super dark. The text is in 100% green so I really dont want that to lighten but was hoping that somehow when sending it over, the blacks are sent at a lighter shade or more screened or something. There are some options in the Ink Manager when going through the print dialogues that I am not too sure what they do. One is called "Neutral Density" that sounds like it might be something like this but I cant tell where it does anything. Is there anything I can do to make what appears on the DPM looks more acceptable and not overly dark?

IMO, you won't get this answered in the Acrobat forum.
Without discussing embedded profiles in the images...if you're hesitatnt about photo's because they print to dark, your wasting the functionality of that DPM. Any decent daylight camera will print line copy at half the materials cost...
I would suggest you have a tech spend a day in the pressroom to calibrate the DPM. We brought one in for 30 days and sent it back, I get better results through a small imagesetter (which is really all your DPM is with the addition of a RIP and material cutter)

In short, there are some test files stored hopefully on the RIP's internal drive - test patterns. Pull one up, plate it, run it on job stock at normal ink levels. Measure the screen values. Input these values into the RIP's calibration sets.
If you were to create your own - Create twenty .5" x 4" frames, fill them with tints of black from 5% thru 100%, plate it run it...I'm guesiing that everything over 75% is filled solid

ZEN Vision M: Album art stuck. Can't chan

I've come across a strange problem and was hoping someone could help. Any help is much appreciated.
Before we start, Album Art = AA
Ok, I have 2 albums named 'Greatest Hits', one by Sublime and one by The Offspring. I was adding AA using MediaMonkey and when I added the Sublime AA I hit 'Apply on all tracks on Album'. MediaMonkey accidentally added it to The Offspring's album as well since it has the same exact album name. So at this point The Offspring's album is showing the wrong AA, Sublime's cover.
I didn't notice this until I already synced over to my Zen Vision M and it caught my eye. No big deal, right? Just replace and resync... easy. Well now no matter what I try it still has the wrong AA showing on my ZVM. I changed the AA with MediaMonkey and it correctly shows The Offspring's version but it still shows the Sublime version on my ZVM. I've checked with multiple programs and there's no Sublime AA in sight as it should be so it really appears to be a problem with my ZEN.
I've tried renaming the whole album name and it finally gets rid of the Sublime AA in favor of the correct The Offspring AA but this does not help me since it's the wrong album name.
Any ideas?

Scope?
I'dd like to export an Indesign-file (.indd) to a PDF-file that has to be:
- the smallest possible file size
- which displays images and text sharp on the screen
- which also certainly remain transparent parts of .psd-files after exporting
- that is flattened for easy print
The problem?
▪ How and with which of settings can I export such a file from InDesign 5.0?
▪ If necessary in combination with some settings (after exporting) in our Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro?
Further explanation
The export file contains lots of text, graphics, photographs and drawings. Many of these items are .psd-files that contain transparent areas. The intention is that this transparent parts actually remain transparent even after exporting/flattening /decreasing the PDF.

Should I start from a default PDF preset   (if yes > which one??)

Or is it better to create a PDF preset on my own?     (if yes > which settings??)
Standard > PDF/X-format?
Compatibility > PDF-version?
Compression > If artwork should be compressed and downsampled, and if so,
                        which method and settings to I have to use ?
Ouput > How can I control colors and PDF/X output intent profiles in the PDF-file?
Advanced > How can I control fonts, OPI specifications, transparency flattening, and JDF instructions are
                  in the PDF file?
▪ With Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro?
→ How can I reduce the file size extra, so more reducing after exporting into PDF ?
→ How can I flatten the exported file (if not done during the export) ?
!! Important, when I export/reduce/flatten the file, I ‘dd like that the parts of images who were transparent before, stays also transparent after !!

Transparency and flattening

I'm using AI CS3 on PC. I've been given an EPS file that was apparently created in AI 11 on Mac. It has no preview (at least not that will show up on PC).
I opened the file in AI to save it with a preview. When I do a Save As, AI says:
"When spot colors are used with transparency, changing them to process colors outside of Illustrator can generate unexpected results."
Does this mean I need to change all of the spot colors in the file to CMYK? The file has been used as-is in the past apparently with no repercussions.
Then AI says:
"The document contains artwork that requires flattening."
What should I do? I find the whole business of transparency and flattening confusing.
I COULD just use the original EPS file as-is, but I really hate not having a preview.
FWIW, the EPS will be used in an existing Quark file.

The first message is just a warning. If you intend to keep the spot color(s) on press, there should be no conversion to process involved. If there is going to be a conversion down the line, you're better off dealing with it within Illustrator. That's what the warning is trying to tell you.
My guess with the second message is that it has to do with the improved transparency flattening options in newer versions of Illustrator. The document uses transparency, and that means flattening is required (because PostScript does not support transparency).
I would just let Illustrator do its thing and save out your new EPS with the Windows-compatible preview. If the file was used in the past without problems, you probably don't have to do anything within Illustrator. However, if you see a lot of transparency features in use, you might want to flatten more aggressively, even if that means further tipping the balance away from vector toward raster and ending up with a larger file.
The preview really won't tell you much (other than position) once in Quark, so make sure you output a proof -- at least to Adobe PDF. Check to make sure each spot color in your Illustrator file goes to its own 'plate' out of Quark.

How can i use eyedropper between two different art board.

How can i apply the same color for the images in two different art boards with eyedropper.
I am trying to apply the same color from the image in one art board to another image in another art board.
Can any one help me please. Thanks

Presuming you are unable to use the Eyedropper Tool normally, in other words keep the target object selected while you pick up the colour, by having the Artboards open in adjacent windows to ClickDrag between (I am still with 10 which may explain at least part of my ignorance for which I apologize):
Until someone presents a smarter solution, you may cheat and create a carrier object beside the source object, drop the colour in that, cut and paste it to be beside the target object, and drop the colour there. With multiple colours to drop multiple times, you may create a palette to hold them, to use just like a painter working on several canvases at the same time. Or you could paste diminshed copies of the source objects.
