Article on PPro CS4 64 bit performance...

I thought this was an interesting read and maybe some of you all here will too...

Merry Christmas everyone!

It's cool man. I just don't understand why Adobe wasn't more forthcoming, they we're quoted in the article as saying they recommend 64 OS with 8 gig memory for avchd yet you see that nowhere on the Adobe site.
Most people who use AVCHD cameras are consumer/prosumer types and telling them they need that they need such beefy computers to edit the format native might stop more than a few from buying premiere, that's all I was getting at. Also there's a great hatred for Vista out there (not me) and telling these non-pro's they need not just Vista but Vista 64 would turn more than a few people away. (The Red Camera whitepaper specifically says Vista 64, I think the generic 64bit comment was just meant to include Mac's OS, xp64 doesn't work nearly as well as Vista 64 in my experience)
It was the statement "This is why we recommend 64-bit systems for CS4" that got me. They didn't say 'helpful' they said 'recommended'. And judging by everyone's problems editing AVCHD on 32 OS I might even upgrade that to 'necessary'.
Then there's this:
"What types of project will benefit from running in 64-bit Windows, and what types of performance improvements can we expect?
Consider the following workflow:
* After Effects in use for compositing
* After Effects compositions used in the Premiere Pro timeline via Dynamic Link
* Premiere Pro editing HD content
* AME encoding a Premiere Pro sequence in the background
* Encore burning a Blu-ray Disc using content imported via Dynamic Link from Premiere Pro.
This will create approximately 10 processes, each of which can use a separate 4GB chunk of memory. This means its possible to achieve much higher stability with complex projects and workflows.
In addition, performance improves: Customers spend less time switching between applications and waiting for memory to page back in from disk. And more memory is available for frame caching so that when content is played, it will be available in the cache longer before it gets swapped out for more recently played frames. This translates into better editing interactivity, particularly for detail work on high resolution content.
Obviously this is a fairly intense workflow, but we frequently talk to customers that want to do similar things. And even with the more straightforward case of encoding a Premiere Pro timeline were able to use a lot of memory compared to running on a 32-bit system. That really helps when we get into large frame sizes and complex projects."
That one paragraph is more helpful than anything on the Adobe site. Just wondering why they it took a call from a major magazine to clear this up. According to the tests in the article CS4's new dynamic link uses a good more RAM than in CS3. Little things like that are nice to know.
But, like I said it's all cool. You have to admit knowing all that would us out here on the user forum where we try to help other uses for to help them out. Does that make sense?
Happy holidays
Anyway didn't mean dust up anything with you Curt just speaking my mind. I'm really glad Adobe finally explained how everything works. Makes much more sense.
Thanks again for the links Eric. Might be the best present I got this Christmas.

  • PPro CS4 with Windows 7 (64 bit) slow after upgrading to CS4.2.1

I upgraded to Windows 7 64 bit recently. Before I worked with PPro CS4 (4.2.1) in Windows XP 32 bit and performance was fine. My system is not up to date (Opteron dual core, 4GB, ATI Radeon 3870), but performance was o.k. Since Windows 7 I had problems running HD footage natively (e.g. Sony XDCAM) in the timeline (it simply stops after two three seconds). I also had problems using vob-files (which under XP was very smooth). I reinstalled and figured out, that PPro runs better without upgrading to vers. 4.2.1. So for everyone who is suffering a lack of performance after switching to Windows 7, try this, it might help a little.

I had a somewhat similar experience with the 4.2.1 upgrade with my computer. With my Q6600 running at 3.2 GHz, Vista x64 and with PPro CS4/4.1 update, I ran the PPBM4 benchmark and scored an 83.8. I then installed Win 7 x64, clean install etc… and re-ran the PPBM4 benchmark, with the same 4.1 update and with all system configurations the same as before, my score improved to 68.8, fantastic! I was very impressed with Win 7 x64.
This was short-lived because I updated PPro from 4.1 to 4.2.1, re-ran the PPBM4 benchmark and my score fell to 83.1 seconds, not impressed with the 4.2.1 update as far as this benchmark was concerned. I replaced the Q6600 with a Q9450, also over clocked to 3.2 GHz and with Win 7 x64, ran the PPBM4 benchmark and scored a 68.1; I got back everything I had lost in system speed from the 4.2.1 update plus some.
The Q6600 does not have the SSE4 instruction set while the Q9450 does. Perhaps the 4.2.1 update benefited CPU’s with SSE4 while those CPU’s without it, took a performance hit, just a guess.

  • Loading Project problem in Adobe Ppro CS4

Just registered in this forum and I hope you guys can help me out.
I've been editing in PPro CS4 for quite sometime now and my main problem is during the loading of the project.
    here are my specs:
    Processor: i7 @ 2.8ghz
    OS: Win7 Ultimate 32-bit
    RAM: 4GB
    VC: ATI HD4670 1GB/128 bit
    Storage:       C: - 320GB 7200rpm Seagate SATA
                       D: - 1TB  7200rpm Western Digital SATA
since I upgraded drastically from a Quad 2 Core to an i7 I decided to use the HD1080i30 (60i) preset in Pprocs4 since I have a sanyo xacti1010 HD cam. But up to now I am unable to finish my video because after the project loads up many of my clips turn into green screen while others no longer play the actual clip.
    now my questionS are:
    1. Is it because my computer can't handle the specific preset or is my camera not compatible with the preset. If not, which preset should I use?
    2. If it's not because of the preset, then where can I find the source of the problem? Specs? Software? Me? :|
I'm not the techie type and I am just starting to understand the technical aspects of editing. I hope a lot of you can help me out because I'm losing my mind and I really want to start editing again.
    THANKS in advance!

The Xacti uses it's own version of some MPEG4 codec. That works great with applications like Nero or Ulead, typical consumer applications. PR however is more oriented to standard video camera formats, that are shown in the available presets, like AVCHD.
There have been more questions about the Xacti and how to make it work, but I think these are mainly in the Premiere Elements forum. I would look around in the PE forum and do a search. You may come up with relevant asnwers.

  • PPro CS4 won't play back

Suddenly video in Premiere Pro CS 4.0.0 for Mac won't play back from source window, program window, or timeline, except for an occasional playback of < 1 second. Scarily this was described by a bunch of users in a thread started two years ago. Only one solution was offered there, which didn't apply to my Mac.
I was involved in another thread on a related subject in this forum once before but that setup seemed connected to the use of a Dazzle Bridge for capturing. There's no such complication now...it's just not playing any video more than a few frames.
An editor who can't playback any video is in trouble, and after paying as much as I did for this program and a Mac Pro, it is disheartening. Any ideas out there?

I appreciate everyone's help but I'm afraid the situation has gone from bad to worse, since Premiere suddenly disappeared.
Yesterday, following one bit of forum advice, I tried using a separate user account labeled Premiere Pro and the program did play the files--though it wouldn't let me save the project file where it resided. Now, however, the program is nowhere to be found. I have the original installation disk but I have heard of problems arising from reinstallations.
To answer some other questions, I did try to download the latest update for PPro CS4. I am using PPro for Mac on a Mac Pro with a 10.5.8 OS. I can't say for certain exactly which version I "have" of PPro CS 4 since the update because the program has disappeared and is not turning up in the Finder anywhere, nor can I recall the exact wording of the error message saying I couldn't save my project as edited under the alternate user. The program and system worked fairly problem free for almost four years before the last few days. I use a variety of source footage, including .avi, .mov, .flv, .mp3, .wav.
One Snow Leopard user has recommended using a Root User account which doesn't seem to apply here. For example, he referred to a "Network Account  User" option that was supposed to appear in Accounts/Login Options but doesn't on my Leopard. Also, as per another user at Trafford College, I revised permissions to select Everyone...however since the program isn't appearing on my computer, there's no telling if that worked.
Community help is greatly appreciated--especially in light of one forum report of someone who was on the phone with Adobe for hours with this kind of problem but without getting it solved.

  • PPro CS4 not holding "interpreted footage" settings

I have a project underway which had a combination of footage (given to me) in both 1440x1080 and 1920x1080 (all AVI files).
I have used "interpret footage" to correct the ratio on the 1920x1080 footage and looks fine. Done my edit.
I noticed on exporting that the aspect ratio on the interpretted footage exported incorrectly.
Every single time I re-open my project some of the interpretted footage has returned back to original aspect ratio. Sometimes it has not. The inconcsistency alone is annoying as I cannot fathom a logical answer.
Sometimes only some have reverted back to original aspect ratio. The 1440x1080 stuff is fine.
Can anyone explain this as I cannot export or fix it.
The only extra info I can give which MAY be significant is that in Windows Explorer, when a clip is highlighted, it says the ratio is 1440x1080, but when imported into PPro CS4 it says 1920x1080 - which I cannot explain.
All other preferences and settings are holding fine, just the "interpreted" footage.
    Any help appreciated.
    Setup is:
    Premiere Pro CS4
    Windows 7
    32 Bit Operating System
    4GB RAM
    INtel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU  6600@ 2.4Ghz 2.39 Ghz
Geforce 7900 GS 256MB graphics card
    Thanks in advance

    Very strange.
Did you install the latest update?

  • Can't Import Mov file into Ppro CS4

I have imported all sorts of mov files but one is from a SONY V1 and won't import. I get an error message saying there is a codec missing. In VLC player it takes along time to play and  it says the codec is MPEG-1/2 video (mpgv), 1440x1080, 29.97. In QT player the video is black but the audio is fine. How can I import this into Ppro?

Do you have QT Player Pro (US$30 upgrade/unlock)? If so, load the file, and hit Ctrl+J for the properties panel. QT Player has a limited properties screen, but I do not recall the keystroke. Also, QT Player Pro, if it will play the file, can also Export to other formats/CODEC's, and I use it for that purpose often.
Also, the free MediaInfo might do better, than G-Spot.
Without knowing the exact CODEC, looking for it might prove difficult.
Also, VLC comes with a bunch of internal players and CODEC's, so it can play stuff, that will not work in other apps., which require the installed CODEC's. There are several Apple-only CODEC's, that do not have any PC counterpart. In that case, you'd need to Open that file on a Mac, with the proper CODEC, and then Export (basically converting) it to another format/CODEC.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - here is an ARTICLE, that might offer a bit more background on CODEC's.

  • PPro CS4 and CS5 installed and Windows 7 default launch from project dbl-click is...CS4?

This is sort of a curious one.  I have to keep CS4 installed to edit Camtasia files as their codec is a 32 bit no-go with 64 bit CS5...
Oddly, when I double-click any PPro project (most were created in CS5), they will launch CS4, not CS5.  When i go into properties and attempt to link a different application as the default for this project type, I browse to PPro CS5's executable and choose it, but end up back in the "Open with" dialog which again, only shows PPro CS4 as an option.
Oddness...  anybody else seeing this?  I just launch CS5 from it's shortcut and it loads whatever I want without an issue, but I still double click without thinking 3-5 times a week and have to back out...It's an annoyance.

    Tim,
Are you comfortable wading around in the Windows registry? If so, you can probably fix this with a quick digit change:
In the Registry Editor (launch regedit from the Run dialog), find the following key: Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Adobe.Premiere.Pro.Project\shell\open\command.
Once you select the "command" key, you'll see the program destination string on the right side; likely it's pointing to CS4. Double-click the "(Default)" string and change the value to to following, exactly as pasted here:
    "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS5\Adobe Premiere Pro.exe" "%1"
That's with the outside quotes and everything. OK the change, and you may or may not need a system restart, but that should correct the issue. Basically the file extension (in this case, .PRPROJ) is associated with a class (Adobe.Premiere.Pro.Project), and that class points to default application. Once that's fixed up, the chain should be put back together.
Also, there is another key in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Adobe.Premiere.Pro.Project\shell\open\command. Changing the above should change this as well, but you may want to check it.

  • PPro CS4.1 often crashes when saving

    Hi there,
I have Premiere Pro CS4.1 running on Win XP (32-bit) SP3.  I find that PPro frequently crashes when saving.  This happens about 1 in every 5 saves (and I save frequently so that translates into a crash about every 30 minutes!)  This is rather tedious.  Is anyone else finding that PPro CS4.1 crashes when saving?  I haven't noticed this problem in previous versions.  Any thoughts as to how to fix the problem?!?
    Many thanks,
    Jack

If you need help quickly...Guideline for posting an effective question
You can start with your disk configuration, other hardware, sequence settings, source material, and other processes running.
I know this may sound like over asking, but it just helps to find what may be wrong.

  • How to Open PPro CS4 project in PPro CS3?

I have to make hundreds of individual avis from a Ppro CS4 project. In CS4 the Media Encoder has to open up for each one and then I must wait til it loads the clip and then I can keep them in queue and do many at once but it takes forever. Is there any way to open this project in CS3 so I can simply export movie files one after the other (without that horrible media encoder)?

Unfortunately, there is almost zero backward compatibility. I did find that Encore CS3 Projects could be Opened, with few issues, in my EncoreDVD 2.0, but that was surprising, and not of help to you.
Now, one can use a bit of a workaround, if such is required. One can edit loosely in CS4 (remember, you will want Handles), or edit very tightly with all Transitions, knowing that those will not be changed in CS3. When done, Export (for SD Projects, either the DV-AVI Type II, or Lagarith would be good), and then Import that into CS3.
Also, an EDL might be useful. There is another option, similar to EDL, that starts with an A, but my mind has gone blank. Others will be quick to offer that, and tell you if it would be useful in your case - sorry.
    Good luck,

  • PPRO CS4 doesn't work?

I got PPro CS4 (french edition) by the adobe store. Download several times. Double click. A blank window opens with the title (Adobe premiere. this software doesn't answer). Sometimes, it carshes. Sometimes, it works. I put some clip on the timeline but I can't export on a tape or through media encoder. On the tape, there is nothing. Encore answers: "can't find the files". But I can see the film on the monitors. After that, PPro CS4 was unable to find the project.
Nothing has been moved and to make sure a new download and a new clean installation have been made.
make a phone call to adobe and I'm waiting for ...
I ask also to downgrade to PPro I bought to the adobe store in 2003. But this is no more available!
    I really appreciate any help

    Hello,
    Thanks Robert for the link.
There are one or two problems:
    1)PPros CS4 crashed when launched
2)A problem with media encoder (maybe 2 comes from 1)
The second problem looks (at least partially or it's a variant) like the problem described by Ruby45 in your forum and solved(?) by Johan973. (error messages are similar).
    Some comments:
    1) I have also photoshopCS (zero) and adobe web premium cs3 suite. Recently due to conflict between extension manager cs3 and cs4 i got a hard time to move the pvii extension from dw8 to dwcs3.
    2) On the folder .../AppData/Roaming/Adobe/ i have some folders called PremierePro (includig the folder 4.0) and Premiere Pro (including 4.0, 1.5 and 1.0) and i never did a change.
    3)I didn't find in the folder programme/adobe/..../premiere any PProCS4.exe
At this time I csan't afford any issue with dreamwaver/fireworks cs3 or any interruption of service.
    Question:
    1) any conflict known between CS3 and CS4? solution?
2)how to perform a very clean installation of PPro CS4 without any interference with the web suite cs33? (I already download and install ppro cs4 several times).

  • PProHeadless.exe crash - still can't render anything with PPro CS4

I ran into this problem back when I did the CS4 upgrade and wound up sticking with PPro CS3 because I could never get the CS4 AME to run under Vista 64-bit.  I recently did an upgrade to Windows 7 64-bit and was hoping that I could finally use PPro CS4.  Alas, I cannot.  Same problem.
I've searched the forum and the web and found lots of recommendations but my AME crashes within seconds of loading - I don't even have a chance to change number of processers and the files I'm trying to render don't matter (I've tried all sorts of source files).  Basically, I export the timeline from PPro CS4, the AME splash screen appears, then I get the "PPROHeadless.exe" crash within a couple seconds.  So I never actually start the render - it doesn't get that far.
Has anyone found any fixes other than changing number of processors and mods to the source material?  Neither of those works for me.
    Thanks,
    rgames

    OK.
Under these circumstances, I'd say that something common to both installations is causing the crash, some piece of software that was on both.
Is this a dedicated production rig, or is the machine used for other purposes?

  • PPro CS4 locks up when clip reversed

We're using PPro CS4 on 64-bit Vista machine.  We have several clips that had a dust spot in them, so we created a mask to cover the spot.  PPro worked fine after doing this.  Our problem occurs in one clip that we want to reverse (we want the clouds to move the opposite direction).  PPro locks up.  We've tried reversing the clip, then creating the mask.  We've also tried creating the mask, then reversing the clip, either way PPro locks up.  What are we doing wrong?  Below are the steps we use to create the mask and reverse the clip.
    1.  Clip is on the timeline in Track 1.
    2.  Right click on clip, Speed/Duration, Reverse Speed
    3.  Render clip to ensure playback is what we want
    4.  Right click on clip, copy and paste to Track 2
    5.  in Track 2, apply Gaussian Blur to blur out dust spot
    6.  Create a new Title, using the Ellipse Tool, cover spot
    7.  Title Properties, ensure color is completely white, close Title screen.
    8.  Drag created Title to Track 3 and adjust clip duration to equal Track 1 & 2
    9.  In Track 2, apply Track Matte Key and in Matte option choose track 3.---this is the point that PPro locks up.

Thank you!!!  We tried your work-around and it worked perfectly.  We really appreciate your advice.  It's also nice to know it wasn't something we did wrong, but in fact is a bug.

  • PS CS4 64-bit (in Web Premium CS4) on Win 7 PC.  I did a duplicate file check on my hdd and deleted dup files. Now I get "Some of the application components are missing from the Application directory, Please reinstall.."

PS CS4 64-bit (in Web Premium CS4) on Win 7 PC.  I did a duplicate file check on my hdd and deleted dup files. Now when I try to run PS 64-bit I get "Some of the application components are missing from the Application directory, Please reinstall the application." When I do this, it seems to install correctly until the very end, then it says "Installation Complete With Errors", and when I try to run I get the same 'component missing message'. What can I do? PS 32 bit runs fine. Some of the other applications ib Web Premium say the shortcut has been changed or removed. I appreciate your help...Thank you

Best advice I can think of is to uninstall and run the Clean Script from here.

  • CS4 32 bit will not open under Win 7 64 bit.

Upgraded from Win 32 bit XP to Win 7 64 bit. While in the process of rebuilding my system downloaded and installed Beta versions of CS6 and Bridge for CS6, before trying to install my current CS4 version. I do not know whether this is causing any of the following problems that I am experiencing. A short time later I installed CS4, ending up with both the 32 and 64 bit versions of CS4. Interestingly, this install did not install a CS4 version of Bridge in either 32 bit or 64 bit, possibly because the Beta CS6 version of Bridge was installed?
However, from a previous system backup I was able to retrieve a copy of the CS4 version (presumably 32 bit version) of Bridge, which I simply copied to the new system and found that it works fine. Interestingly now the CS6 version of Bridge loads one of the two CS4 versions and not the Beta CS6, but I cannot tell which one of the CS4 versions. Question: how does one determine whether the loaded version is the 32 or 64 bit version? If I click on System Info it does say X64 which I assume means the 64 bit version is loaded. Is this the way to tell?
The CS4 version of Bridge now apparently defaults to the 64 bit version of CS4 on opens.
I have now read that most if not all my previous plugins will not run under CS4 64 bit, so I really need to be able to run CS4 32 bit. Unfortunately, when I try to open CS4-32, it fails with the following msgs: "Adobe Photoshop CS4 Has Stopped Working." Then,

The CS4-64 version continues to run as it should.
Assuming that CS6 will come with a 32 bit version when it hits the market I will be upgrading, but for now I really need a working 32 bit version of CS4.
    Please help.

Help - System Info will tell you whether you're running the 64 bit or 32 bit version (look at the end of the first line).  EDIT:  Note that originally said Help - About and have corrected this.
Yes, Photoshop CS6 provides both a 32 and 64 bit version.  In fact, it should have installed both on your system.
Normally the two versions don't get into eachothers' hair, EXCEPT for file associations, which may explain the mixup you're having where Bridge runs the last version installed.  I doubt it has to do with your crash though.
Have you copied any plug-ins or set an Extra plug-ins folder so that there could be a mixup between the two versions?
Have you checked to see if your display driver has been updated?  Go to the web site of the maker of your video card and download the version that matches your hardware and OS.  Display driver updates solve many problems.

  • Photoshop CS4 64 bit crashes with Color Picker

    Hi-
I have Photoshop CS4 64 bit and 32 bit applications Version 11.02 installed on a Win  7 machine.
In the 64 bit version when I pick on the color picker or any swatch - the program crashes and freezes-up and I have to use the task manager to quit the program.
Has anyone else had this problem? I tried re-installing the program, which rolled it back to version 11.0 but the problem persists - but ONLY in the 64 bit version. The color picker in the 32 bit version works just fine.
    HELP!!
    Thanks-
    Cathy

OMG!! I feel soooo stupid! I discovered the problem.
I recently installed a second monitor and had been working with it - but today it was turned off.
The color picker was opening on THE SECOND MONITOR!! So it appeared on the first monitor that the program had stopped responding!
    Well - live and learn!
