Artifacts during motion.

I'm in final week before delivery on an 80minute piece. I am getting artifacts in fast motion (particularly white) areas of the production when I go to mpeg2 for the DVD.
final output is for DVD PAL 16:9 Anamorphic for letterboxed 4:3.
Input: includes
Mpeg2 footage converted to DV files(via mpeg2stream) from a HardDrive SD
DV footage imported as QuickTime from a 3.2 PAL 3ccd cam
and Stills in the form of jpgs and tiffs.
I am outputting through Compressor CBR at a preset bit-rate with all of the choices in place, I have added compression markers to the difficult places.. the problem doesn't seem to be getting better.
I have even gone back to source footage but somewhere in my pipeline these clips are running into problems.
Any advise?

Try using the 3 way Color Corrector and bringing down your whites to 90%. Also check the footage on the scopes to make sure it's legal.
Elements that are of out of luma and/or chroma safe limits can cause fits in encoding and playback.

  • Artifacting in Motion.  Sample project, and a request for help inside.

Would anyone be willing to download this Motion project and see if any artifacting occurs, either on playback or export? I'm on an original 2.66 quad macpro with a x1900 GPU. i've had the entire system checked out by apple, and clean installed everything and this issue still persists. i'm just curious everything the same if the issue shows up on anyone else's system with a similar configuration.
after opening motion it takes about 2x times looped through or just randomly scrubbed before the artifacts start to appear.
here's the link, it's got the motn source .mov zipped up and a sample of the artifacting issue as well as a screen cap from openGL monitor that shows some interested parameters jumping around when artifacting occurs.
    http://file.meyersproduction.com/motion/3.16.08/
I copy and pasted what I sent to motion's feedback page below.
    thanks
    austin
"issue: artifacting in motion when building/exporting multi layer projects with video with fx's and masks applied (about 13 layers with 1 mask and primatte rt turned on causes artifacting). Link to samples of .motn and .mov below.
background: this is occurring on a clean install of os x 10.5 as well as a clean install of 10.4. this computer has spent a week at the apple store getting run through hardware diagnostics and came back with a clean bill of health. after reinstalling and building fresh projects the same artifacting immediately reoccurred.
other notes: I have run the OpenGL monitor while playing back and exporting in motion and artifacts always coincide with a huge spike in the "Texture Page Off Data (Non-AGP)" parameter, there are also lessor spikes in "CPU wait for GPU" but those are not always indicative of an artifact.
I also have a nvidia 7300 gpu installed and it handles any and all motn files flawlessly (albeit soooo much slower)
I have had similar issues since purchasing this system over a year ago.
I would sincerely appreciate any kind of communication other than "reinstall your system and FCS 2"
below is a link to a motn project and video asset, as well as a openGL screencap and exported movie with artifacts

Personally, I think the problem is related to Leopard. I too have been getting artefacts in Motion 3 projects with masking since installing Leopard. Like Austin's experience, the artefacts do not appear at first after launching Motion but emerge fairly fast.
Deleting the mask(s) gets rid of the problem but I kind of wanted to be able to use masks in my Motion projects! I had been doing so without problems in Motion 3 but with OS X Tiger. In case you were wondering, I have also reinstalled Motion and Final Cut since installing Leopard following advice on other threads.
I don't think the issue is hardware-related, though I appreciate that my projects are very demanding for the system I have. Other more demanding projects in other applications (including Final Cut Pro) may render slowly but don't result in artefacts.
    Best wishes

  • Drawing artifacts with motion under a gradient mask

    Hello,
I am having an issue with using a motion under a gradient mask and was hoping someone might have a solution. I have a  transparent png bubble in movie clips that are being randomly sized and  animation started using code. The design has a reflection and I am  using a gradient mask for the effect. The issue is when the bubbles  animate they are causing drawing artifacts. Please see the attached  screen shot or you can see the swf here - http://archetypeworks.com/test/tm/. Below is the code I am using to set the mask. Any help or  suggestions are appreciated.
    Code:
    bottomMask.cacheAsBitmap = true;
    beaker_bottom.cacheAsBitmap = true;
    beaker_bottom.mask = bottomMask;
    Thank you,
    Ococ

Thank you for the suggestion, but that did not work. I also tried breaking apart the png, using the magic wand to select and delete the transparent areas. Still getting the same issue.

  • Psychedelic screen artifacts during video

During video playback, the pod started "messing up" the image. At first, it was the centers of the letters on the beginning credits blacking out. Then, areas of solid black were being replaced by pink and purple -- well, this video was encoded as grayscale so there is no purple. This video had previously played fine on the Mac and an older video ipod. To see if maybe the video file itself had become corrupted, I tried a different movie (in color), one from iTunes store. Video on this one was totally psychedelic, and then the frame began shifting. "Horizontal Hold" was slipping, if you are old enough to know what that means. Lol.
A reset of the pod fixed it up. Anyone else have a problem like this? I just hope it doesn't keep recurring....

Make sure you're running Touch software 1.1.2.
You might want to restore it once with 1.1.2 to see if that helps.
I've not really seen this since the pre-1.1.2 days...

  • Strange Screen Artifacts During Startup

    Hi,
Just a couple of weeks ago, I started getting this weird screen during startup (after the light blue screen and just before the desktop shows).
I already tried unplugging everything, and havealso done a full hardware test (pressing 'D' after inserting disc 2 and doing a full hardware test which showed there was nothing wrong with my hardware).
My unit is a new (2011) Macbook Pro, 17" (sandy bridge, with 8GB of RAM). I unplugged 1 terabyte WD external drive, and unplugged my Wacom Intuos4 tablet, and also switched off AirDisplay (app for iPad), and unplugged everything else except bluetooth mouse and keyboard. The same thing occurs.
Any idea and help would be appreciated.

This problem still exists, even after (Thunderbolt) firmware update. It seems to come out when powering up the machine, after the light blue screen that follows the Apple logo.
(This issue doesn't seem to come out during a restart).
    Er, help?

  • Pause during motion path

I have drawn a camera motion path, and I wish to pause at a control point. Does anyone know how I can do this?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Horizontal bands during motion

I recently began working with HD. My clips were filmed in HD and imported into FCE-HD as HD. I exported these clips as a quick time format for iDVD. When playing the movie in iDVD there are thin horizontal bands that show up when the camera or subject is moving. Is there a better way to deal with converting HD to SD? I dont have a HD burner yet!

I have the same issue...does anyone have an explanation for this? I edited and exported from fce. When I burn in iDVD, the movie has horizontal bars that blur and look like the motion is dragging in stripes. AAAAAAhhhhhh! What am I doing wrong?

  • Video Artifacts During Heavy GPU Operations

    Hello,
    I have a Mid-2014 Macbook Pro 15-inch, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, GeForce GT 750M 2 GB.
When I perform GPU-heavy operations, such as rendering in Adobe Media Encoder using CUDA, I start to get video artifacts onscreen. I have attached an example.
The computer is sitting on an iCurve elevated stand, and I can hear the fans running. I suspect this is being caused by heat but I'm not sure. The problem is exasperated when I'm using 3 displays so I am now only using 2 external displays.
The problem also gets worse as the gpu-intensive tasks progress.
There are no meaningful messages in the console logs that would indicate software problems.
I would like to check my GPU temperature, but there is no straightforward way to do this with the NVIDIA GPU.

    Have you tried iStat menus?

You also might make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.  Bring the screen shoots with you.
    Ciao.

  • Artifacts during gaming with an MSI N570GTX OC

    Hi there
I've had an N570GTX-M2D12D5/OC since early April 2011 and almost from purchase I've had problems with artifacts, weird texture colours, etc, on black ops.
I was going to RMA to my retailer but found that reseating the card seemed to completely stop the artifacts. In fact, the problem went away for several months and even under continuous, heavy use, I had no further issues.
Unfortunately, the problem has re-occurred now - about 8 times in the last 6 months - and is happening more frequently too.
I am completely at a loss as to understand what the problem is.
I have tried underclocking the card to stock speeds of a non-OC card and although this reduces the artifacts, it doesn't stop them (please note that my card is a factory OC'd version).
Any help would be gratefully received.
    Thanks,
    Gary

I'm sorry Svet but it appears I've already got the latest BIOS.
I downloaded NV801MS.KK1, then used it with the NVFLASH utility. However, when I tried to flash the new BIOS, the current and new BIOS were the same version.

  • Severe flicker or interlacing artifacts with motion

In the archived topic with the same subject as this one at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=351090&start=0&tstart=0
my problem with interlace flicker was not solved. There is bad news and good news with the new iLife '08.
*Bad news*: iMovie HD 6.0.4 still generates flicker with the new iDVD 7.0.1.
*Good news*: iMovie 7.1 +does not+ generate flicker with the new iDVD.
This means the source of the problem was not EyeTV or its export settings, or the old iDVD. It was iMovie all along.
Of course, the new iMovie has a long way to go to catch up with the old iMovie and I seriously doubt if we'll ever see any updates to, what should I call it now, *iMovie Classic*, but actually being able to build a flicker-free movie is certainly worth something.

Interesting. I want to try the workaround ElPresidente suggested in that archived thread. Lots of good info in that thread.
I too am having this problem although I'm calling it "jitter".. See this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1166111&tstart=0
I'm using iMovie HD and iDVD 5 and EyeTV 250 plus.
    I'll follow this thread too.

  • Artifacts during startup

Between the apple logo loading screen and the initial login screen, there is a few seconds of this on gray screen. I just replaced my logic board for the 3rd time, so I'm wondering what this could be about.

I doubt that it's software related - the soldering/thermal paste on the 15" and 17" model logic boards is simply faulty and it seems as if you've managed to get faulty logic boards all along, if this is a symptom repeating itself.
Of course, you should have the logic board replaced. And there's still a chance that you'll get another bad one. If you're asked to pay for another board after your 90-day warranty has expired, you may want to look at having the GPU reballed. But get that logic board replaced first - I seem to have stumbled onto a 'decent' one when I had my logic board replaced (under AppleCare) in January. 10 months and, thus far, no problems as yet. You're a bit 'double-jinxed' because if this board goes belly up, you could only get a replacement in a 15" Retina model. Just no more 17" models since 2011.
have the board replaced and keep your fingers crossed that you get a good one this time around.
    Good luck,

  • Artifacts in Motion Viewer: Video card issue?

I have been having an issue where at different times, I can see my video in the canvas, yet mixed into it are strange patterns and colors, often that resemble sections of the program im working in or in dialog boxes that could be open, or any running programs.
    examples seen here:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/evanrobertscott/
    ANY advice??????

Some possibilities are that some part of the file is too big- for me it's anything larger than 4096x4096 that screws me up. Also, your graphics card could be getting too hot- I'd suggest trying smcFanControl from http://homepage.mac.com/holtmann/eidac/software/smcfancontrol2/index.html.

  • Motion playback on production monitor through AJA Kona LH card looks nasty.

    Okay, so here's the deal.
We have recently invested in some shiny new things to equip an edit suite - a Kona LH card and a Production Monitor. Along with a Sony HDV/DVCAM VTR. Specs of our set up are listed at the bottom.
Pretty much all of the work we have done in the past has been non-braodcast - we're looking to improve workflow and quality of final output. We work mainly with Final Cut Pro, but also with Motion.
We have connected everything and have marvelled at how much of a difference it makes having a proper video preview from Final Cut (v. 6) as opposed to what we had before - firewire to camera to TV... Of course we were expecting this marked improvement.
We were also expecting the key benefit of a video preview output from Motion.
Now. We do get a video output through to the production monitor from Motion. But this is where it gets weird.
When we do a preview of an animation, it looks really shoddy.
As a test case, let's take a basic text crawl in Motion 3.
Static graphics look great, but when you play motion graphics, the image quality is really jaggy and nasty. (even at full frame RAM preview, best render settings, full res - all of these options are apparently properly selected).
So we did some test exports. Usually we would export animations in the Animation Codec, with an alpha if intended for compositing on top of a video track in FCP... we tried a bunch of different formats - animation, photoJpeg, DVCPRO 50, Aja 2Vuy, Uncompressed 10bit...
All these play from Quicktime on the computer monitor just fine, but when playing from the AJA TV app to the production monitor, again the same problem. And then when you bring them into Final Cut, the same problem, even when you match the sequence settings and field order to the source video ...
In effect, it seems that anything generated in Motion just doesn't want to look nice on our Production Monitor - even when imported into FCP.
HOWEVER - if you drop the Motion PROJECT into an FCP timeline, all is fine!
We know the AJA card and the Monitor are working because of this fact, and because when you generate titles from within FCP itself - the same text scroll, for instance, it looks perfect!
I have also found when working with old composited animations originating from AE that you can get FCP to pump these through to the production monitor beautifully when working in an uncompressed sequence setting - or in an Animation sequence setting. (For an Animation sequence to go the the production monitor from FCP, the Video Playback option in A/V Settings needs to be set to "AJA Kona 625i25 RGBA" instead of "AJA Kona 625i25 8 bit" or 10 bit).
The above point could be of relevance...? The only Video Output options from Motion or AE that apply to our setup and monitor are "625i25 RGBA" and "625i25 DV-RGBA" ... are we supposed to have more options?
In short, we could work around these issues - it just doesn't seem right however that we can't get a decent external preview from Motion. A big reason for upgrading our setup was faithful video previews of animations from these programs...
We also can't understand why exports from these animation programs can look so poor. I can export a video with a text crawl generated from a DV PAL Final Cut Project with DV Pal compression settings and it looks massively better playing through AJA TV than our test Motion exports.
    It just isn't right.
    Please help. Pretty please.
For reference, here are the specs of our set up:
Apple Dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5
    4.5 GB DDR SDRAM
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon 9800 XT
    Equipped with Kona LH Card
JVC TM-H1750CG Production Monitor fed via SDI (have also tried component, to no avail)
    It just isn't right.
Please help. Pretty please. Many thanks in advance.

Sounds like you are seeing interlace artifacts - in Motion's project properties, have you tried setting the field dominance to None?

  • Issue in migration of Planning artifacts through LCM

    Hi,
I am trying to migrate EPMA planning application from development server to production server. I am using LCM for the migration and have taken export of the HSS, EPMA, Planning and FR & WA artifacts. I am now importing these artifacts in to production server, however I can not proceed with migration of Planning artifacts through Migration Wizard as I got stuck on the "Destination" step where I got message as "There is no destination available to migrate".
    Please guide me on this...
    Thanks & Regards,
    AK

    Hi John,
Please refer to my comments to reply:
Break down the migration into product areas first, start with HSS and then migrate, then move on to planning and HSS, this should narrow down where the issue is
That is what I am doing - I am migrating the artifacts separately i.e. I migrated the HSS first then migrated EPMA Architectue and at last I tried migrating the Planning artifacts during which I got stuck with selection of "Destination" for Planning artifacts.
+"The planning applications need to exist first on your target environment."+
For this I need to create a planning application manually before migrating, and since my planning application is EPMA enabled application and not a classic application I guess I should not create a planning application manually before starting migration. Please guide me on how can I ensure that planning application exist before migrating the same on to target environment
    Thanks & Regards,

  • Artifacts when I import .avi file to After Effects (and Premiere)

    Hi,
I'm having some issues with After Effects that I can't figure out. I've got a video file in .avi that loads and plays fine by itself, but when I import it to edit in After Effects 5.5, I get strange artifacts during playback, and they even translate to the final export. I get the same issue when I try to import and render in Premiere. I have the sequence matching what the video file is, and even right clicked the file, and interpreted the footage for the project to match the video file to be sure, but with no successes at figuring it out. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong here?
I get the same issue regardless of me being on my desktop or laptop. I'm using Windows 7 on both computers.
Per the questions I should ask:
What exact version of After Effects? Include the minor version number---e.g., After Effects CC (12.2.1) or After Effects CS6 (11.0.4). Do not just say "After Effects with the latest updates" or "After Effects CC"; give the specific version number. 10.5.0.253
Have you installed the recent updates? (If not, you should. They fix a lot of problems.) Yes
What operating system? This should include specific minor version numbers, like "Mac OSX v10.6.8"---not just "Mac". Windows 7
If you are getting error message(s), what is the full text of the error message(s)? No messages.
What were you doing when the problem occurred? What is the exact sequence of steps that you are taking? Importing and test ram preview and or rendering.
Has this ever worked before? If this worked before by doesn't work now, what has changed on your computer in the intervening time? First time i've tried this.
Tell us about your computer hardware. Include CPU type and number of processor cores, amount of RAM installed, GPU, number and sizes of connected monitors, number of disk drives, and how any external drives are connected. Intel i5 2500k 3.3GHz, 8GB ram, 64b OS, 2 monitors, 3 hard drives. AMD Radion 6900
What versions of drivers for your graphics hardware do you have installed (including CUDA driver and driver for display adapter)? 13.12
Do you have any third-party I/O hardware (e.g., AJA, Matrox, Blackmagic, MOTU)? No
What kind(s) of source footage? When telling about your source footage, tell us about the codecs, not just the container types. For example, "H.264 in a .mov container", not just "QuickTime". .avi
Do you have QuickTime installed. (You should.) If so, what version? The answer should be specific, such as "QuickTime 7.6.2". yes, 7.7.5
What other software are you running? none
Do you have any third-party effects or codecs installed? none that I know of.
Are you using OpenGL features in After Effects? I think so, it's enabled.
Does the problem only happen with your final output, RAM preview, or both? both
Are you using Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing? no
Are you using the ray-traced 3D renderer? no
If the problem is with output, give your exact output settings (both render setting and output module settings). Screenshots help. 2014-11-13_1514 - Tetra84's library
Here is a screenshot of the issue that I'm talking about:

See this thread on the Camtasia forums in which one of the Camtasia software engineers recommends against using the TSC2 codec for use in applications outside of their suite:
    https://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmith/topics/avis_created_with_camtasia_studio_8_do_not _play_on_other_computers
I'd ask on the Camtasia forums what codec they do recommend and how they recommend transcoding your existing TSC2 files.
