Artifacts in DNG files converted from NEF

On two occasions, I've encountered artifacts in my photos that I've converted from NEF (using Nikon D7000) to DNG format in Lightroom 3.6.  Is there a "fix" for this?

Yes, you're correct. It sounds perfectly feasible to keep a checksum in the database for other file types. I voted for your idea.
Here's an interesting article: http://dpbestflow.org/data-validation/dng-validation
Currently, the only way to check a large number of DNGs is to run the free DNG converter on them, which can take a long time and requires disk space for the second copies. The Adobe SDK has a function for checking the checksums, so it sounds like a relatively easy task to write a small app that would validate an entire directory tree containing DNGs. That could be quite fast and would be a good thing to run periodically.

  • Why will CS4 not open DNG files converted from Olympus E-M1 raw files?

For several years I have been able to use the DNG Converter to convert .ORF raw files from my Olympus E-M1 and then open them for processing in CS4. Suddenly CS4 quit recognizing these DNG files saying "Photoshop could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file"
I have not changed any preferences. I'm using E-M1 v3.0, DNG Converter v8.3.0.141 on a Mac. I have deleted DNG converter several times, even reinstalled an earlier version but nothing changes.
However, CS4 will open DNG files converted from Pentax raw .PEF files from my K-5. Weird. It's the Olympus raw DNG conversions that won't open.
I can view the DNG converted files in question in Mac's Preview just fine but not CS4. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Be sure the DNG Converter's compatibility is set to provide support for your version of ACR:

  • System or program crashes when converting from NEF to DNG

    Hello Adobe.
First off, I love your software.
Second, this is my concern. You guys are pushing DNG as the go to raw format. That would be great if it worked good, but it doesn't.
First, when I convert from my Nikon NEF format (Nikon D7100) it chugs along just fine, then suddenly crashes either the program or my system after converting 50-100 or so images.
I have tried everything from downloading your software again, to turning off everything other then what is needed to do the conversion.
Of course I have the latest DNG utility/plug in/drivers from your website.
Second, the DNG images open much slower then my NEF images. Plus when I view them in Windoze file system view and want to see the photos in extra large icons, it renders the images very slowly.
My system is Windoze 8.1 updated always, Photoshop CC latest and greatest (I'm in the rental program), Bridge and Lightroom.
I have tried to use bridge and lightroom to do the conversion, even a separate utility and the crashing still happens. All these are up to date.
My system has an i7 Intel processor, 16 gb of Kingston ram, an ASUS P8Z77 MPRO mother board and a good stable power supply.
No other software crashes my system like converting from NEF to DNG.
What I do notice is my CPU fan goes into high RPM's and I am wondering if the CPU is overheating causing this.
If that is the case, then it would seem to me the conversion software is taxing the system far more then it should since my system is no slouch and while it isn't the latest and greatest, I would consider it to be in the top 20%,
it should be able to handle the conversion with no problem.
Are you aware of problems with the DNG software and or file format?
Is their any information I could forward to you to help solve the problem?

Photoshop Help | Digital Negative (DNG) - Adobe
    helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/digital-negative.html
DNG is a publicly available archival format for storing camera raw files. Adobe provides Adobe DNG Converter, a free utility that converts files from more than ...
That is off the net, therefore, Adobe looks at DNG as part of Adobe Photoshop, which it is if a person chooses to convert.
My issue has to do with it crashing, both my system and software.
I assume if people here are using it, then they can advise me if they are having similar problems.
I have also written Adobe directly several times over the last month and have yet to receive a response.
I apologize that I posted here, but since I consider DNG an integral part of Photoshop, then I think it is appropriate here.
I was also not aware of a DNG forum, if one exists.
    Thank you for your assistance.

  • DNG files created from Fujifilm FinePix E-900 .RAF raw files

I'm having a problem in creating DNG files from my Fujifilm FinePix E-900 camera .RAF raw files on my Mac (Mac OS X 10.6.4).  The DNG files are recognized correctly in Adobe software (Photoshop CS4, Bridge, Lightroom 3) but not by any Apple software (including Aperture 3.0).
I've used Adobe DNG Converter 6.1, Photoshop CS4, and Lightroom 3 to create these non-linear DNG files.  As a point of reference, I've used the same settings to create DNG files from Kodak .KDC raws files that Apple also doesn't support, but these DNG files (created from the .KDC raw files) show up just fine in Aperture 3.0.
The one thing I find unusual about the .DNG files created from the Fujifilm FineFix E-900 .RAF raw files is that when I do a 'Get Info' on these files, the image dimensions of these .DNG files always shows up as 0 x 0.  (The image dimensions should be listed as 3488 x 2616.)
So I'm wondering if there is something wrong (a bug maybe) on how these files are being converted to the DNG file format using Adobe DNG Converter 6.1, Photoshop CS4 or Lightroom 3 on a Mac.

Hi Frank, you need camera Raw 7.4 which is only available for PSE11. Consider upgrading or wait for PSE12 to be launched soon. If you regularly shoot raw try Lightroom with PSE10 as your external editor.
Alternatively, download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in PSE10 (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.1
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.1
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • I was informed i need to purchase standard 11 or standard 12 (?) in order to make word files converted from pdf editable. how do i do this?

i was informed i need to purchase standard 11 or standard 12 from adobe in order to make files converted from pdf to word using the recently bought and installed adobe pdf exporter file. how/where do i do this?

Currently the Acrobat version is "XI" (no "12").
    With Acrobat XI installed:
"File - Save As Other"  --- from here you pick the supported file format for the export.
If a PDF has content that is the output of a scanner then that output (as is the case for All scanners' output) is a picture of text and not real text.
During an export all that can be processed is the picture. As a picture of text is not text it is understandable why Word (or other word processors) cannot edit the content.
So, for such, prior to export run Acrobat's OCR and save.
The export will be of the OCR content.
Do expect to do clean of the text, spelling, punctuation, layout etc.
This may be minor. This may be major. But, there will be some.
Adobe as some online subscription services that can take a "proper" PDF (NOT all are eh) and export to supported file formats.
Two are "ExportPDF" and "PDF Pack".
    Be well...

  • DNG files exported from LR4 not showing changes made when opened in PSE10?

I have LR4, and once I make some develop changes I've been exporting the files I want to use as DNG.  I then open them in PSE10 to make final edits.  It's been working fine, actually I had an older version of Adobe Raw in my PSE on my other computer.  So when I opened in PSE it would ask if I wanted to conver to compatible version to edit in camera raw.  I always said no b/c I didn't need to do anymore raw edits.  Now that I have installed PSE on my new computer, it has the new ACR version I guess.  When I open the DNGs to edit now I no longer get this error message, but it's showing my contrast, etc. as a standard raw setting instead of the changes I made in LR.  Some are showing....like vibrance, but "recovery" which I know is "highlights" in LR, and other things are not showing correctly.  I know that the options are different, but I don't want to use the ACR settings that it's using when I open the file, or have to go through them again.  I'm sure there's something I'm missing but can't figure it out.  Thanks for any help!

I quite simply did not comment on the issue of "it is supposed to be better to keep DNG files as opposed to NEF files now, right?"
The issue you raised in your original post, and the issue of choosing DNG versus NEF, are completely separate and independent.
The issue of transferring photos to PSE would cause the exact same problems in your case whether or not you use DNG or NEF.
On the issue of converting photos from NEF to DNG, there are advantages and disadvantages, some people do and some people don't. If you'd like to know more, I suggest you search this forum, there are plenty of discussions on this topic.

  • Color artifacts in DNG files

Hi, I've got a major issue with Adobe PS Lightroom DNG import on my Mac from my Canon EOS 5D Mark III. Any image converted to DNG file format is showing heavy color artifacts around edges, whereas the color of the object in focus is abruptly replaced by a grey border and the missing color is repeated after the edge. I know this sounds weird and I've already spoken to experts and even sent my camera to Canon for a check-up. Now I realized that this issue doesn't occur in the proprietary Canon CR2 RAW image files but in the DNG files in Lightroom only. Has anybody at Adobe a faint idea how to solve this?

Those gray halos on the edges of green and purple areas are from the Defringing lens-corrections area, so check your Defringing settings in ACR for the camera you’re using.
The Defringing function can’t tell the difference between purple and green halos caused by lens problems and purple and green edges of the subjects, themselves, so you have to be careful with it and probably shouldn’t Defringing on by default.
The Defringing slider of the Adjustment Brush can be used to reverse extra defringing that shouldn’t have occurred like you’ve pictured, or the Adjustment Brush with a positive Defringing amount can be used to reduce fringed areas visibility if you don’t want to use the automatic Defringing sliders.

  • Problem diplaying dng files converted in Lightroom

When I import my RAW files into Lightroom, I convert them to .dng files.  They display just fine in Lightroom.  However, when I try to open them in Irfanview or Thumbsplus, the image is broken up into broad hoizontal bands with some of the image missing betweeen the bands.  I suspect that this is a windows problem since it happens with two different windows applications. Here is an example.
Anybody have an idea where this error comes from?
    Nat

Thanks  for your help. I did  some searching on the ifanview forums.  According to somone there,  this problem can be avoided by disableing  "fast load embedding" when importing RAW files.  I have not been able to confirm this as I have not yet figured out how to import them without "fast load embedding".  However, it seems like a nice feature that I don't want to disable.  I guess, for now, I will just import my RAW files and not convert to .dng.

  • Preview can't open Adobe DNG files converted in snow leopard

I have been unable under Snow Leopard 10.6 to use either 5.4 or 5.5 adobe dng converter to convert Leica RWL files to DNG files that are readable by Preview or by Aperture. Adobe CS4 can read these DNG files, but then it can read the RWL raw files as well.
However, on my other mac using Leopard 10.5, the converted DNG files ARE readable by Preview and Aperture. Any thoughts or help?
    thanks

The DNG converter is not a plug-in.  You need the Camera Raw update.  That may be your point of confusion.

  • Files converted from m4a to mp3 are not displaying correctly in feed

hi; i recently produced my first show in garageband (after using a bunch of other audio apps in the past), exported to an m4a file, and converted to mp3 in itunes, but it is not showing up as an audio file in my feed.
the feed is http://feeds.feedburner.com/wellroundedradio and my blog posting on it is http://wellroundedmedia.blogspot.com
is there something you need to do when converting from m4a to mp3 in itunes to make sure the settings are all correct so it will be enclosed as an audio file? i have tested other mp3 files in the feed and they are working fine.

  • Photoshop CS3 doesn't open dng-files converted with the adobe dng converter 7.4

    Hey Guys,
i got a new camera - sony alpha a57 - which produces arw-files. for being able to work with these pictures on my photoshop cs3 I converted the arw-files to dng-files. now adobe bridge shows only the converted dng-signs, but I can't open them to work on them.
does anyone have an idea what I could do to use these files?
    thanx,
    rita

    Hi,
Sometimes when using the dng converter one needs to set the compatibility settings to the version of camera raw you want to open the files with.

  • Apple ProRes HQ files (converted from HDV) will not play in Premiere Pro

I was working on a project in premier pro and finished a draft on 12/24 with no issues.  I took these file directy from their coverted state as .mov files into the PP project and edited on the timeline with no issues.  Shut down on 12/24.  Opened project today, none of the files from the HDV converted format will play correctly OR export correctly.  They are all Black video and still contain the right audio.
As a side note here, this is the same for trying to play the file in Quicktime AND in Apple's Final Cut Pro 7.
The only files affected are those that were uploaded and coverted to Apple ProRes HQ from the HDV format.
Again, this was working and functioning fine un Tuesday, now they appear black in the timeline and viewers.
Only change made to ANYTHING on my iMac is: Updated iTunes on Tuesday after I had closed the project from Premiere Pro.
    Please help!!!

Only change made to ANYTHING on my iMac is: Updated iTunes on Tuesday after I had closed the project from Premiere Pro.
    Sounds like a clue.
Apple / Mac  updates have a history of creating issues and plenty of evidence supports that statement.
My guess its a QT version issue.

  • Coding with Vector file, Convert from PSD to AI or Start over from Scratch?

I have an App developer that is requesting an .AI file for developing an App that can be utilized on all the following Apple hardware (iPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPod touch, iPad, iPad mini). He is insisting on it, because of the vector file. I have a design file that was completed in a layerd PSD. I want to know what, if any, quality is lost from converting from PSD to .AI vector file? Would it be better to have the Designers strach over from Scratch? Please Advise!
    Thanks for your help

Depends on what type of layers are in the .psd. Certain layers type can convert to vector quality (shape layers, type layers, smart objects).
You also should ask the devloper about bitmnapped effects (eg: drop shadow) and placed images, if they are ok to use.

  • .mov files converted from .mkv have no sound?

I had a .mkv file compressed from a while back and converted it to a .mov (H.264) file. There is no sound, although the video is perfect. I tried to convert another file and it did the same thing - no sound, just dead silence.
    Why is this happening?

Conversion of video can be slow on any computer, obviously older and lower end equipment will be the slowest.
.mov is a container for video, audio and other types of files, before you can carry out any conversions you need to know the format of the video and audio tracks within that container as not all conversion software will deal with all formats. Let us know more about your video and we can make suggestions for suitable software.

  • Difference between AAC and m4a files, converting from AAC to useable format

Does anyone know the difference between AAC and m4a files? iTunes has an option to use an AAC encoder to compress CD files, but this creates an m4a file not an AAC file. I just got some actual AAC files and iTunes cannot read these, is there a way to convert from AAC to a format that iTunes recognizes? Thanks

iTunes uses AAC data wrapped in an MPEG 4 container file. If you got some *.AAC files, and they're just raw AAC files, then you need to wrap them in an MPEG 4 container. The only way I know to do this is using the foobar 2000 program. You can find more information at http://www.hydrogenaudio.org and http://www.foobar2000.org
