Artifacts in Final Cut Pro

Let me first start off by saying that I am new to the Shake realm but have been a long time editor with Final Cut Pro. With that said, I am running Final Cut 5.1.1 and I sent a clip from my timeline to Shake to use the smoothcam node. After I tweaked the clip in shake I rendered the file out node but when I view the clip in Final Cut Pro there are artifacts all over the screen. It almost looks like the video is interlaced. I put the de-interlace filter on both the original and the shake composite but it didnt do much. Any ideas?

Well, to me that after picture looks like feeding interlaced material to smoothcam without telling it. It's analysing the frame like it's progressive material as opposed to dealing with each field as a frame. At least to me, that's what it looks like.
As to the difference between SmoothCam and Stabilize, SmoothCam does an optical flow analysis of the material, then calculates movement and counters it to the degree specified. With Stabilize, you pick up to 4 tracking points, then track them, then use that to lock down the shot. If you still want movement, but want to remove jumpiness, you have to process the tracking curves to allow movement, but remove glitchiness.

How do I stop Final Cut Pro 10.1 from introducing artifacts?
Can someone please tell me what do do differently so that my edited video does not develop artifacts that were not in the original camera file.  My Sony HDR CX900 produces crazy detailed XAVC S video that FCPX seems to import with no problem but FCPX is introducing artifacts: some on import and more on share. The artifact in the examples below appears above and below the horizontal rope line on this model boat. Please look closely. It doesn't look to bad here, but it dances on my screen. Also, the video generally degrades much more than I would have hoped. How can I get more professional results?  Sorry for the long post, but more information now might save time and questions.
Below is a portion of a frame opened in quicktime directly from camera's card.
Below is the associated Inspector for above frame
Here is the same after it is imported into FCPX. Optimized and Proxy Media were created, but FCPX seems to select what to play so I can't tell you which one is shown here.
Here is the associated Inspector capture from FCPX.
Here is the same frame once again after it is Shared as ProRes 422. Note the horizontal lines above and below the rope lines on this model yacht.
Here is Inspector for the above file.
Here is the same once again after it is Shared as H.264 Better Quality.
I tried converting to Proress with 5Dto RGB and Brorsoft Video Converter. They both went though the process, but introduced similar artifacts.

When I right click on the clip in the browser and select Transcode Media, the dialog box opens, Optimize Media is checked, but OK is greyed out. Transcode is not an option. I think this points to the fact that FCPX is doesn't need to transcode XAVC-S or FCPX can't transcode XAVC-S. This is a new Sony codec produced by the new HDR CX900. The codec is HD at 50Mbps.
    Tom Wolsky,
I selected Optimized Media in the viewer and both the timeline and exports (422 and H.264) look great.
The 24 second long exported video jumps a couple of times as if skipping a frame, as it plays. Could this be related to 29.97 instead of 30fps?
Thank you so much for getting the image right. Now if I can just eliminate those couple of small jumps.

  • Comparing video quality of AVCHD BluRay discs using Final Cut Pro Share vs Compressor

Up front, I will admit to being a newbie when it comes to using Final Cut Studio 3 and would appreciate some feedback from the Apple forum experts.
I have spent a lot of time trying to determine how to achieve an optimum group of Compressor 3.5.2 settings so that the playback video quality of an AVCHD BluRay disc is equal to or better than one created by using the simpler auto settings of FCPro Share, version 7.0.2.
When using Compressor’s auto/default maximum settings, I experienced the same error message reported in:
Error MessageDuring Creation of Blu-ray Disc in FCP and Compressor 3.5
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/12073794#12073794
I have since made some Compressor AVCHD Discs with smaller bit rate settings and compared video quality with a single FCP Share AVCHD disc.  Both seem to be equal in providing a very good video when viewed on my new Panasonic DMP BDT 310 BluRay player. However, the Compressor AVCHD discs show some motion artifacts not present with the FCPro Share version, especially when scrolling text or when objects are moving through the field of view, and visible artifacts are seen from a stationary chain link fence and other lattice work in the background of the video sample.
My sample video used for the comparisons between Compressor and FCP Share discs is a 21 minute duration home movie, originally captured from a mini DV, Canon HV30 1080i camcorder using ProRes HQ encoding(1440x1080), and dragged into FC Pro 7.0.2 timeline where 10 chapter markers have been inserted.
To create an AVCHD disc using FCPro Share, Markers are used to set the IN and OUT points, Select IN to OUT from the timeline, pull down File Menu Share, Select Create BluRay from options in pop out Share pane, and designate output device along with picture files for Background, Logo, and Title options. When these are completed, click on Export.  My 21-minute video required almost two hours for encoding including about 10 minutes for burning. This accomplished on an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
To prepare this same 21-minute video for use with Compressor, I again Select IN to Out from the FCPro timeline, but this time use File Export as a QuickTime Self Contained movie including Chapter markers. Then Open Compressor, choose Create BluRay from Template pane, right click on the down arrow in the Batch window and load the QT self contained movie file. From there I went to the Inspector window and tried various combinations of bit rate settings along with Frame Encoder options such as Better or Best motion parameter controls.
I have tried the following combinations of Bit rate settings along with varying Frame Encoder controls and burned an AVCHD disc for each example:
    Example A
Compressor set to 6 Mbps Average and 8Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings OFF. Approximately 4 hours to encode although the time remaining estimator indicated a larger value of ~7 hours; not an accurate estimator at all.
    Example B
Compressor set to 6 Mbps Average and 8Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings ON, using “Better (Linear Filter) and Better (Motionadaptive)” settings. Approximately 4 hours to encode, not the 13 hours that were estimated.
Conclusion: Comparing A & B Compressor versions, Disc B showed some improvements in reducing motion artifacts over Disc A.
    Example C
Compressor set to 13 Mbps Average and 15 Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings ON, using “Better (Linear Filter) and Better (Motion adaptive)” settings. Multipass checked. DeInterlace was checked. Unknown hours to encode; about 8 hours done overnight..
Conclusion: Disc C showed some minor improvements reducing motion artifacts over Disc B
    Example D
Compressor Auto settings,i.e., 15 Mbps Average and 17 Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings ON, using “Better (Linear Filter) and Better (Motion adaptive)” settings. Multipass checked. Approximately 12 hours to encode, done overnight. Inserted disc next morning after the overnight encoding was completed, and a few minutes later an error message pane appeared that the maximum bit rate had been exceeded.  This message was consistent with the Apple posted thread referenced above. Unfortunately the long overnight encoding was wasted.
It seemed to me that the best Compressor settings for suppressing the motion artifacts were displayed by the disc burned in Example C, i.e.,  13/15 Ave/Max Mbps with“Better” Motion settings in the Frame Encoder.
However, when this disc was compared to the AVCHD Disc burned using the FCPro Share, the latter still seemed much better. I do not know what the auto bit rate values are as set in FC Pro, but for me, the quality is quite good AND the motion artifacts are significantly reduced, especially evident with the scrolling text.
Sorry about this long post, but I thought the detail would be necessary for the experts, and maybe helpful to others trying to get started in this BluRay arena.  Did I misuse Compressor?  I think the sample video exported as a self contained QT movie was the right thing to do?  Not sure where I went wrong.
Thanks in advance for Feedback and Recommendations.  For now, I’m going to stay with the simpler process using Final Cut Pro Share function.
    BoBo

Thank You, Brad, for responding;  glad to hear I'm not the only one having similar Compressor issues.
You may have hit on something.  Perhaps Compressor's use of H.264 encoding was the reason for my motion artifacts?  And perhaps Final Cut Pro Share retains the 1440x1080 quality as it burns the AVCHD BluRay disc?
I had Toast 10 for less than 30 days a couple of years ago, and was lucky to get a refund.
What version of Toast do you have?  Wondering if new Toast 11 has improved previous bugs, especially upgrading its Chapter text, pictures, music.  I would go back to Toast if it came close to mirroring DVD Studio Pro, or even iDVD capabilities.
    Thanks,

  • 2 Questions about final cut pro 5

My first question is quite simple, I know that previously final cut pro could only use up to 2.5GBs of memory, now I'm just a bit curious if it can use more since leopard is a 64-bit OS. Right now I'm using Final Cut Studio 1. I'm just asking this question since I intend to get an additional 4GB of ram (Right now I only have 2GB) I'm going to get Muskin's MacPro memory. I generally run my system down to about 200MB of free memory and sometimes down to 10MB when I'm using photoshop in conjunction to FCP. What does everyone think about getting an additional 4GB?
    Thanks for the answers.
Okay, to not make two posts I'm give me final question/Problem. Ever since I've upgraded to Leapord I noticed that the playback quality in the canvas and viewer is poor. There is bad gamma. What I mean by that is that i'm getting extremes in color, I have areas that look normal followed by areas of over saturated color. It's more on the over saturated side though. Besides that the play back quality is poor, even though my sequence settings are at "Best" for video processing. I also seem to get jagged lines on things like railings, people's shoulders, and on other edges. My picture quality is grainy, however there are no artifacts. Even on the FX transistions I get the jagged lines on edges of oh say page peels and what not.
Now when using DVD player or watching my MPEG2's on DVD Studio, they play poorly too. The image is clear however I get the horizontal lines when there is motion. Now when I put one of my DVD's in my DVD player (not computer) the problem goes away and everything looks fine. This is less of a problem (the horizontal lines), but I don't understand the poor playback quality.
The video looks fine on my external NTSC video monitor.
I have the GeForce 7300 graphics card, with the 24" samsung 245BW. I upgraded to 10.5 on a clean install.
    Thanks a lot everyone!!

    Thanks for my memory question!
However I'm still getting poor looking footage. Even when I open up my source clips and play them they look poor in quality. I'm getting the horizontal lines on everything that moves and corners are not sharp, they look distorted and jagged. I never had this problem before I'm not sure whats the cause or the solution. Even the footage from Final Cut Studio's tutorial looks bad (grainy, strange contrast, jagged corners and lots of horizontal lines). However the edges on my footage look a little more jagged. I think i mentioned it already but the FX transitions that are page peels, cube spins...etc give me jagged edges too.
I removed flip4mac and all other non-apple codecs too.
    ugh i hate computers sometimes

  • Final Cut Pro Flickering White Colors

I have video that was captured using a green screen with TriCaster. Because of poor lighting, the whites in the video are flickering and "noisy" while I'm editing in Final Cut Pro. Is there anyway to remove or cut down that flickering in Final Cut?

After upgrading from FCS2 to the current studio, All video placed in Final Cut Pro or Motion shows up as either black or white, sometimes with a few small color artifacts- as if the contrast had been turned up to maximum. This issue affects even the bars and tone generator in Final Cut Pro. Audio is unaffected.
I removed all installed files and receipts and reinstalled, issue is still occurring. I've also updated to 10.5.8 and run Final Cut under another user.
This issue is occurring on an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo. I have a fresh install on my Macbook Pro which is running without any issues.

  • Pixelation with Final Cut Pro HD

This question has probably been answered many times but overall in Final Cut Pro I've been having a problem with it and I just want a final explanation (FCP 4, FCP HD, FCP 5)
Whenever I add a title to my video, I do my basic render and play it back with cinema desktop preview, and it looks a bit pixelated. I can understand that my dv footage looks bad, but my titles look BAD when played back. I have everything at the highest settings. I can always SCRUB and frame by frame view my video at the high quality I would like but when I play it back it turns pixelated again. When I use a T.V. to view my external video, it looks fine, but it would be helpful if it looked good on the computer monitor.
Can somebody answer my stupid question?

First, you might want to view the footage in QuickTime Player. But be sure check your preferences so that "Use high quality video setting when available" is checked. If it is not pixeled in QuickTime Player with this setting enabled, your problem is with Final Cut playback settings.
If the footage is showing pixelization in both apps, you are probably experiencing artifacting, which is a natural effect of all digital compressed footage. You can minimize this by using the highest quality format available when editing. It is normal for footage to get pixelized in footage with alot of motion or fine detail. I'm assuming you're using DV format or HDV format. Both of these have this problem.
If you would like to try something that might help this, visit www.natress.com. Under the free plugins menu you'll find an experimental FCP plugin called G Low Pass which claims to limit the amount of detail in a scene when things get too busy. This reduces the likelyhood of artifacting when applied to DV footage and it seems to help in a very subtle way.
As for DVD playback having occasional large, blocky pixels, it could be a small scratch on the DVD surface, or perhaps a poor burn. But if the footage has the same problems in QuickTime Player, the DVD isn't to blame.

  • Final Cut Pro 7 Master Templates are white!

I can't get Master Templates working in FCP 7. I see the templates if I browse them, I can load them up in Motion no problem. But if I try and view them in the viewer, or add them to the timeline, they come up white. I have uninstalled and reinstalled FCP 7 3 times today now, and can't seem to figure out why this feature doesn't work. I've trashed preferences, everything I can think of. Anyone else having this issue?

  • Mini-Dvi to Video out from Final Cut Pro working

Thanx Everybody for posting reply for my post regarding running video out to external TV from Final Cut Pro in MacBook.
    It's working fine.

@ Studio X : The files were originally created with Final Cut Pro, rendered out to QuickTime, then are being played back with Final Cut Pro. The file that has the most noticable studdering is a 60-minute timeline sequence in Final Cut. All files are being stored and played back from the Mac Mini's internal hard drive. Everything was originally shot on DV and formatted for a 4:3 aspect ratio.
@ Shane Ross : Are there any settings in the MacOS or FCP where I can improve the HDMI video signal? Or do you know of / have any experience with Firewire to HDMI converters? Unfortunately, my new signal path relies on HDMI from the video playback.
My current setup uses the Firewire output, which is then converted to composite video & analog audio using a pair of ageing DV tape decks. That setup is becoming troublesome due to age.

    Hi Shane,
Just one more quesiton re: this topic, I am looking to get rosetta but do not have Leopard or Snow Leopard...
I read that it is not on Snow Leopard only on Leopard....so do I need to get only Leopard? Can u advise?
Alternatively I do have Mac OS X Tiger so is it on this and can I install it from here?
Please excuse my lack of knowledge here, just trying to get my FCP 6 up and running asap....

  • How to use Final Cut Pro with multiple user accounts?

    Hi,
I want to use Final Cut Pro on a clean user account. How do I set it up? How can I access my old FCP library and still work on it from multiple users?
Also, I want my DropBox account to back-up my media. Any tips?

I use external drives as backup. But I don't trust them. And in case of fire or what ever...It is of no use...
But I agree on your comment about DropBox. It would have been the perfect solution though.
    What else is there?
I have a 2TB HD but these projects are huge and still growing - so I have to move my projects to several external drives. So maybe I should just work directly from external drives and skip the partition of the computers main drive? I am thinking of the disadvantage of reducing the total storage of the disk.

  • What's wrong with my Final Cut Pro 7.03?

What's wrong with my Final Cut Pro 7.03?
I have just started up a new project.
Every time I try to ad a clip in top of each other a "general error" shows up. The sequence viewer turned red and it displays that I have to close and reopen the window to restore.
The only "new thing" I do - is the use/brand of camera.
Now I use the canon D5 mark 3 for my project (before D5 mark 2)
What's wrong??? Do I need to update my Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 And how do I do this???
Final Cut Pro 7, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Did you use Log & Import?  Or did you at least convert the D5 files before importing?  FCP doesn't work with those files natively.

  • How to I get a folder to open up in Final Cut Pro version 6 thats off my desktop?

How do I get a folder to open up in Final Cut Pro version 6.  I'm on a MAC OS X Version 10.6.8.  The movie folders I imported on my desktop from a Lacie Rugged Triple external hard drive.   When I try to import the folder a pop up comes up that says, "ERROR: No translatin templates matching the selected XML file were found.  Unable to import this file."   When I try and drag the folder into Final Cut a pop up comes up that reads "Please choose a translation document file".  What should I do or what am I not doing?

  • How do I capture HDV in Final Cut Pro 6.0.6 from a Sony HDR-CX360?

Hi. I recently upgraded to a Sony HDR-CX360 Camera. I've been importing off of Firewire with my older cameras. Now I face only being able to import with USB. It is not recognizing the camera. How do I import with this kind of camera and Final Cut Pro 6.0.6.? It works fine with iMovie.

    Hi,
There are a couple of things I would do in your position .. first off make sure the camera is turned on and connected BEFORE I start FCP. another would be to run up system profiler and have a look in FireWire - and see (obviously with the camera connected) is it listed in there .. If not in effect the MAC is not seeing the camera and Failing that if it is a six pin on the camera connect to a six pin port .. I had issues with a Camera (Canon XHA1s) which the MAC Pro FireWire (8 pin) would not list the camera until I installed an two port 6 pin FireWire card .. It works every time now. Hope you get it sorted ..

  • Export Final Cut Pro 7 project to open in FCP 6?

Is there any way to open a final cut pro 7 project in final cut 6?
We have a bunch of older Macs that won't run FCP7, but we use for training but our hope was to upgrade the newer machines to the new Final Cut Studio, but it would be great if we could create something on the newer machines, that we could transfer to the older ones.
We tried XML export, but it didn't look like it included filters and such, so we are wondering if there is any other way?
