Artifacts in Output

I discovered that text box overflow gray bars and cursor placement both will output as artifacts when output to .jpg.  To not have these artifacts in the finished output, you must stretch all text boxes until the overflow indicators no longer appear on screen (they appear sometimes even when all text is clearly visible), and you must not have a text box open for editing with a blinking cursor in it when you select Output.  Both of these things are a usability issue.

Hello,
This is a bug and will be fixed.
Thanks,

  • More CS 5 - ProRes 4444 Alpha channel nonsense

    Hi:
    Quicktimes I render out of After Effects CS 5 using the ProRes 4444 codec are tagged as having an alpha channel even though my settings in the Output Module are RGB and Trillions of Colors.  NOT RGB + Alpha and Trillions of Colors+.  It doesn't matter whether my project is 8 bit or 16 bit.
    When I bring such movies back into AE it shows them as having an alpha channel (Trillions of Colors+).  If I do a Get Info in QT player it shows Millions of Colors+, and FCP shows them as having an alpha, too.
    I just upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 (figured it was safe after two years) and in the process switched full time to CS 5 (I only used it in the past to open other's projects).  I never had these issues with CS4.  I have not installed any AJA codecs into this new OS (clean install over wiped HD).
    This appears to be the opposite of the problem most have been having, which is AE won't generate an alpha in ProRes 4444 without moving codecs and other nonsense.
    The reason this is a problem is because when I bring these Quicktimes with faux alphas into FCP for editing I can't export a reference movie.  FCP rewrites the whole timeline.
    Haven't these CS 5/ProRes 4444 codec/Alpha channel issues been going on for over a year?  Do I have to buy CS 5.5 to get this to work correctly?
    Thanks.

    PR422HQ is way overkill for 99% of the video and film producers in the world. It's there for a specific elite of the entertainment biz, those who work in 4k on 64bit systems, I guess, that' ain't me! It's one of those "if you have to ask, you can't use it" sort of things. Anyone who uses the advanced features of the ProRes family knows why. That's the theory. In my practical experience over on the FCP forum at Apple, 99% of those using ProResHQ believe they are improving their original footage.
    Apple ProRes 4444
    The Apple ProRes 4444 codec offers the utmost possible quality for 4:4:4 sources and for workflows involving alpha channels. It includes the following features:
    Full-resolution, mastering-quality 4:4:4:4 RGBA color (an online-quality codec for editing and finishing 4:4:4 material, such as that originating from Sony HDCAM SR or digital cinema cameras such as RED ONE, Thomson Viper FilmStream, and Panavision Genesis cameras). The R, G, and B channels are lightly compressed, with an emphasis on being perceptually indistinguishable from the original material.
    Lossless alpha channel with real-time playback
    High-quality solution for storing and exchanging motion graphics and composites
    For 4:4:4 sources, a data rate that is roughly 50 percent higher than the data rate of Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
    Direct encoding of, and decoding to, RGB pixel formats
    Support for any resolution, including SD, HD, 2K, 4K, and other resolutions
    A Gamma Correction setting in the codec’s advanced compression settings pane, which allows you to disable the 1.8 to 2.2 gamma adjustment that can occur if RGB material at 2.2 gamma is misinterpreted as 1.8. This setting is also available with the Apple ProRes 422 codec.
    Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
    The Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) codec offers the utmost possible quality for 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 sources (without an alpha channel) and provides the following:
    Target data rate of approximately 220 Mbps (1920 x 1080 at 60i)
    Higher quality than Apple ProRes 422
    Apple ProRes 422
    The Apple ProRes 422 codec provides the following:
    Target data rate of approximately 145 Mbps (1920 x 1080 at 60i)
    Higher quality than Apple ProRes 422 (LT)
    Apple ProRes 422 (LT)
    The Apple ProRes 422 (LT) codec provides the following:
    Roughly 70 percent of the data rate of Apple ProRes 422 (thus, smaller file sizes than Apple ProRes 422)
    Higher quality than Apple ProRes 422 (Proxy)
    Apple ProRes 422 (Proxy)
    The Apple ProRes 422 (Proxy) codec is intended for use in offline workflows and provides the following:
    Roughly 30 percent of the data rate of Apple ProRes 422
    High-quality offline editing at the original frame size, frame rate, and aspect ratio
    High-quality edit proxy for Final Cut Server
    The Apple ProRes family of codecs provides these advantages:
    Quality indistinguishable from that of the most pristine sources: Maintains superb quality even after multiple encoding/decoding generations.
    Mastering-quality 4:4:4:4 RGBA: Provides a lossless alpha channel with real-time playback (Apple ProRes 4444 only). Mastering-quality 4:4:4 Y′CBCRcolor and 4:2:2 Y′CBCR color are also available.
    The quality of uncompressed HD at data and storage rates lower than those of uncompressed SD: Provides real-time editing performance comparable to or better than that of any other HD codecs in Final Cut Pro.
    Apple ProRes encoding at any frame size—SD, HD, 2K, 4K, or other: Apple ProRes codecs can also be encoded into nonstandard frame sizes, but nonstandard frame sizes are not supported for real-time playback in Final Cut Pro.
    Variable bit rate (VBR) encoding: “Smart” encoding analyzes the image. Efficiency is increased because excess bits are not wasted on simple frames.
    10-bit sample depth: Preserves subtle gradients of 10-bit sources (sunsets, graphics, and the like) with no visible banding artifacts. When you import a file using an Apple ProRes codec, you don’t have to first determine whether the file is an 8-bit or 10-bit file. Apple ProRes codecs always preserve the bit depth of your original source files.
    I-frame–only (intraframe) encoding: Ensures consistent quality in every frame, with no artifacts from complex motion, and speeds up editing.
    Fast encoding and decoding: Delivers high-quality, real-time playback and faster rendering times.
    Equipment affordability: Because of low bit rates, you can edit more streams with more real-time effects on slower drives, or have more users accessing the same media over shared storage devices.
    Workflow options for any video format that does not have native Final Cut Pro support: The Apple ProRes format provides an effective workflow for projects involving multiple acquisition formats when you want to standardize on a single codec.
    Better rendering for native editing: Can be used to render long-GOP MPEG-2 formats (such as HDV and XDCAM HD) to speed up editing and avoid MPEG-2 reencoding artifacts before output.

  • 1minute video distortion with iDVD-anybody encounter this?

    I encountered a strange issue with a movie that I recently created in iDVD. Src was 1080i HD, downconverted to 720p and imported to iMHD, and then used within iDVD.
    At about 53 minutes in the video (total ~1hr 40 min DVD encoded using Prof setting), there is a strange video distortion created - difficult to describe, but looks like say a 100x100 pixel movie upscaled to 720x480 with big blotches of color all over.
    Src video imported to iDVD looks impeccable, and even if I recreated the DVD with diff src media at the 52minute mark, the distortion still shows up exactly for 1 minute around the 53 min (or 52.5 or 53.5 or 54 min) mark.
    Really bugs me, as iDVD otherwise seems to do an OK job with the downconversion of the HD src file.
    Anybody seen this odd behavior with iDVD? BTW, I burn to disc image, and both the image as well as the DVD show identical distortion at the same spot.

    Bengt,
    Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try trashing the iDVD pref file and re-do the disc image. I've already had to trash the iMovie pref file several times due to another bug there - I seem to have hit some max limit on # of cutaways+PIP inserts and it doesn't allow me to add another cutaway/PIP -- but that will have to be a different thread!
    The file formats are the same throughout the movie - mixed HDV 1080i + AVCHD 1080i - and they are both downconverted to 720p using the native HD output format from iM09. All orig source and the 720p files look great without any artifacts. However, only the 1 min section as mentioned before has these really ugly blotchy artifacts when output from iDVD to 480i.
    Unfortunately, I got the same artifacts/distortion at about the same point in the movie even if I tried a different iDVD theme (same movie length) or tried the output to Vid-TS folders...:-( This seems to point to a bug in the internal conversion to VOB...
    I'll try your suggestion next - to trash iDVD pref and re-do the disc image again.
    Thanks!

  • HD to SD, My Video Looks Like Crap!

    Hello all!
    So yes, I am a newbie when it comes to DVD Authoring but I need to get my feet wet with it. After looking at a basic tutorial I took a stab. Threw up a template, linked the main movie to a button and set it to return to menu when it was done. The footage was from a Canon T2i (or 550D as it is known as well) at 1920 x1080 and I wanted to burn standard DVDs. Well, it worked, but the quality was not so good. It's just under 26 minutes long, the quality is very so-so, not at all crisp, and really my real test is to see how the text looks. (Spoiler: Not with smooth lines!)
    So, what can I do to make my video have a high quality? I exported an MP4 h264 video as the final output and used that to make the DVD. I did 2 versions, playing with the settings and still ended up with less than stellar quality.
    I am now attempting a third disc, this time using Adobe Dynamic Link. I am pretty sure I left it at default and didn't change any settings, so we shall see how it comes out, but is there any rule of thumb getting DSLR HD footage down to SD? I have been reading the forums and that's where I got the dynamic link idea.
    What's interesting is I used the program ConvertXtoDVD and came out with a nice looking end product, but I did not care for the templates and did it with no menu. I would like to do it with Encore where I can learn to make more custom menus. Any help will be greatly appreciated, and I will report on how the Dynamic Link copy looks.

    Here are the recommended workflows for creating DVD from AVCHD/HD (1080i) clips.
    Workflow 1:
    1. Create a AVCHD 1080i30 (60i) sequence in PR
    2. Export to MPEG-2 DVD using "Match Source Attributes (High Quality)" preset and make sure that "Use Maximum Render Quality" is checked in Export Settings.
    3. Import the files into Encore and build to DVD
    Workflow 2:
    1. Create a AVCHD (1080i) sequence in PR
    2. File->Adobe Dynamic Link->Send to Encore
    3. In Encore, File->Transcode Settings, choose NTSC DV High Quality 8Mb CBR 1 Pass (or) NTSC DV High Quality 7Mb VBR 2 Pass preset and make sure that "Use Maximum Render Quality" is checked.
    4. Build to DVD
    When you select the preset encoder settings in En/Pr, you have to check the box that says, "Use Maximum Render Quality". If you don't, then you get the interlacing artifacts, soft output. Maximum Render Quality slows transcoding substantially, and requires much available RAM.

  • Frame artifacts appearing in PDF output

    I have a problem with faint artifacts of object frames, rectangle frames and diagonals, etc. appearing in a PDF output when viewed in Acrobat Reader.They are hairline thin and are not visible in the InDesign document on screen.
    Here are the circumstances of it occurring:
    I'm using CS5.
    The PDF is output for a publication that requires PDF X-1a:2003 standard.
    The artwork, and any placed images are in CMYK. Transparency blend space is set to Document CMYK.
    The background layer for the ad. is rich black 50:0:0:100 and the artifacts are showing up over a white logo.
    Placed near the logo is a transparent background PSD image file with a drop shadow on the subject. (This object frame is one of the artifact sources) If this image is removed, the problem disappears.
    Tif files don't seem to cause the same problem, but I'm having difficulty placing tifs and retaining transparency; the background always turns white, which doesn't happen with PSDs.
    Be grateful of advice as to preventing this happening; Thanks.

    We can confirm with a screen shot, but it sounds like a flattening artifact known as stitching. This shows on screen in the PDF, and often in a low-resolution print, but usually is not a problem on press.
    You have to specifically opt to save transparency in the Tiff options dialog. You'll find once you do, though, that the stitching returns -- it's the transparency and flattening that causes this.
    You can embed a screen shot using the camera icon on the web page like this:

  • Strange artifacts on PDF output (when a line is in close proximity to a box)

    Hello all,
    I am hoping that someone can suggest a solution for this purplexing issue.
    I have a rectangle (actually occurs on similar rectangle image boxes or text boxes) that connects to a line (Japanese Dots). Whenever the line is near the rectangle, their is a faint but noticable white line surrounding the rectangle.
    When I initiate EDIT mode in Adobe Acrobat, it reveals that the PDF output/distilled version is introducing this artifact by separating part of the image into a 'chunk'. The artifact (or white line) is the border surrounding this image chunk!
    Also, it is important to add that if I move the line away from the rectangle, the faint white line vanishes.
    Please see attachment.
    Any ideas about how to fix this?

    Rob Day wrote:
    Either export with live transparency (PDF/X-4) or if you have to distill make sure the Print>Advanced>Transparency Flattener is set to High Resolution.
    Thank you Rob!
    Saving as PDF (even with Trans flattener set to high res) didn't help BUT exporting does work.
    What is the purpose of Save As [PDF] if it doesn't work correctly?

  • Artifacts in Bridge Output that don't show in Photoshop CS4

    Hello,
    I'm new to using Adobe Bridge and I used the output function to check on the resolution/condition of an image.  I am seeing artifacts in Bridge that are not visible in Photoshop.  Likewise the image looks very poor in Bridge but is crisp and clear in Photoshop.   The image that I'm looking at is a 8 1/2 x 11" 300 dpi.  Why would these look completely different in the two programs?  Do I need to adjust a setting or does Bridge trump Photoshop in terms of what will ultimately print?
    Best,
    Melinda

    John,
    Thank you so much for taking the time to answer me.
    I used the settings:
    Custom
    Page Preset:  US Paper
    Size  8.5 x 11
    Quality 300 dpi.
    But I also fooled around with a ton of other combinations (in terms of the template setting)  although I have no clue what they mean and got the same result.
    If I went back to the image and used the eraser function to "clean" up the artifacts that I couldn't see in a particular area and generated a new preview they were gone in that area.  That's what's having me a bit concerned. They do not show up in Photoshop or in a PDF generated by InDesign.
    Very strange...

  • Compression artifacts in validate dng output - proof attached

    I have uploaded a zip file - out.dng is the output of validate dng.
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/9906333/dngs.zip
    Look at the edges of the white chair - you will see classic jpeg compression artifacts.
    Note that this is the default lossless jpeg conversion only.
    I used the program as
    dng_validate -dng out.dng <input>
    I confirmed this with a build in Visual Studio using qDNGUseLibjpg=0
    I would appreciate the admins looking at the provided examples.

  • [gnome 3.16] Multimonitor with intel-virtual-output screen artifacts

    I have upgraded to gnome 3.16 in testing and noticed that windows will produce artifacts (like tearing/shifted frames) when the content is changed. This is sometimes fixed on redraw, but always happens when any changing output has to be displayed. Screenshot is not possible, at it doesnt show the bug. I could post a photo, if the problem description is too obscure. The internal display works perfectly still.
    My setup is a latop with nvidia optimus running the standard x64 archlinux kernel. I use bumblebee with the proprietary nvidia drivers. The display connectors are all connected to the dedicated gpu, thus I use intel-virtual-output to connect to the external monitor. This has worked wonderfully prior to the upgrade to testing today.
    I hope the question is in the right place, since I cannot exactly pinpoint which component is responsible for the failure..
    My questions are:
    Could changes in Mutter be responsible for this behavior?
    Which logs could be of assistance?

  • Odd stripey artifact in my pulgin's output

    Hey everybody,
    I've been experiencing an unpleasant bug in many of my plugins where I get an unpleasant stripey artifact in the output.
    This happens in my plugins which involove several PF_ITERATE steps and some fast blurring. What it looks like is for certain rows of the image, an operation or two is skipped and not applied to those pixels.
    It tends to happen when we're changing the value of a parameter with a slider or some such control and After Effects is rushing to complete the operations and something gets dropped at some point. These artifacts tend to go away when I turn the effect off and back on again but I'm not confident that it won't keep cropping up. Has anyone seen this type of behavior? Anyone hava an explanation/solution?
    Any help is appreciated!
    P.S. I'll try and post some screenshots later...

    Hey everybody, I fixed my own problem!!
    Here's what happened:
    I was screwing up my PF_Err flag.
    I had multiple calls to PF_ITERATE and each one was like:
    err = PF_ITERATE(0, height, input_worldP, &input_worldP->extent_hint,
                                         &si, myFunction1, output_worldP);
    err = PF_ITERATE(0, height, input_worldP, &input_worldP->extent_hint,
                                         &si, myFunction2, output_worldP);
    err = PF_ITERATE(0, height, input_worldP, &input_worldP->extent_hint,
                                         &si, myFunction3, output_worldP);
    so each call overwrote err, thereby blocking any previous errors from getting through.
    I rewrote it like:
    ERR(PF_ITERATE(0, height, input_worldP, &input_worldP->extent_hint,
                                         &si, myFunction1, output_worldP));
    ERR(PF_ITERATE(0, height, input_worldP, &input_worldP->extent_hint,
                                         &si, myFunction2, output_worldP));
    ERR(PF_ITERATE(0, height, input_worldP, &input_worldP->extent_hint,
                                         &si, myFunction3, output_worldP));
    and everything was better.
    Here's what I think was happening under the hood:
    The stripes would show up when one changed parameter values quickly, like moving a slider fast back and forth. This would interrupt the rendering which would result in a error that if properly caught would tell AE to not display this frame, it didn't get finished properly. Well I was screwing up that error reporting so AE was displaying interrupted frames which looked like crap.
    This was clearly a rookie mistake which I made by blindly copying code form an example without properly understading how it should work. Alas....
                        ERR(PF_ITERATE(0, height, input_worldP, &input_worldP->extent_hint,
                                         &si, generateSkinIsolationMatteDemo8, output_worldP));

  • Movie recording playback artifacts with scalable output?

    I've recorded a movie in Captivate 7.01 in demo mode. But I need to have the output scalable. When I publish with scalable html I get all these screen artifacts as the movie plays back. I have video compression turned off and the screen color set to 32 bit? Is there any way to fix this???
    Thanks!

    You need to work out what is the lowest practical resolution of your main target audience group.  If most of your audience is only on 800x600 then by all means build for 800x600.  However, I tend to believe that only a small minority of your users would be on such a resolution.  Given that most people would be on 1024x768, I would tend to build for something around that size.  The ones on 800x600 would of course be disadvantaged. You need to decide if they are a big enough user group to matter.
    Whatever you decide, turning on HTML scaling is going to make everybody's output look worse.

  • IDVD won't recognise FCE output movies. Also has bad artifacts.

    Recently upgraded to new iMac and Final Cut Express.
    Have a problem with making a DVD of my first project in FCE. Of three sequences I've cut and exported to Quicktime, as per instructions, iDVD will recognise only one. That is, only one of the .mov files shows up in the "media" folder in iDVD. So I can bring that into the iDVD project and it plays, but with very noticeable motion artifacts. The other two sequences, (all done on the same day with same settings on camera, HV20), they don't show up in the "media" box, but if I drag them on to the iDVD page they play, but with very bad motion artifacts.
    Anyone got any tips on what's happening here and how to work around it?

    I am experiencing the same problems but have found a workaround. Although iDVD will not recognize the movie in the media window, you can drag the movie file into the main window and iDVD will accept the file. I have also found that if you use the "export using quicktime conversion" rather than the "export quicktime movie" you get better results (fewer artifacts). I used Photo JPEG settings at 100% and saw great improvement - - it took longer but it was well worth it.

  • Output same Deski report as PDF and XLS

    Hello,
    will it be possible to generate (not schedule) a Deski - Report using Java SDK ?
    desired workflow:
    - generate/refresh the report to hold new data (User specific, Local specific)
    - output this report in Formats PDF and XLS
    - store the output - reports in Users inbox
    The goal is to generate the report only once and output the same twice - as pdf and as xls.
    As far as i saw in scheduling a report, it is only possible to produce one output (pdf or xls), if we need both, we have to schedule twice. And therefor we will have to generate the same report twice.
    I found somthing like
    binaryView = (BinaryView)documentInstance.getView(OutputFormatType.XLS);
    binaryView = (BinaryView)documentInstance.getView(OutputFormatType.PDF);
    in RBean for Webi - reports.
    Looking forward for any idea.
    Thanks in advance.

    If you're on XI 3.x, then you can specify multi-format exports using Publications.
    Otherwise, you'd need to export to a file using REBean SDK, then Enterprise SDK to create a new InfoObject for that artifact.

  • How do you re-encode h.264 video without artifacts?

    Hi
    I have a video that was exported out of Premiere using h.264 at max 20mbps. All is good. Since the export takes 10+ hours I now want to create a version for Vimeo and Youtube. Becuase of the file size I don't want to upload the entire 2GB file to these services (I have a 5GB week limit upload at Vimeo) so I'll simply bring the file back into Premiere and export it using the Vimeo or Youtube setting with the max mbps around 5mbps or so. When I do this the resulting output file is unplayable, lots of artifacts and stutters. Some blacks are white even. I'm guessing Premiere is having an issue becuase it's re-encoding an already coded h.264 file, or something like that. Any ideas why this would happen and any solution to producing a good output?
    Cheers.

    As Dave stated, re-compressing already lossy-compressed video directly into another lossy compressed format is never a good idea: In this instance, image quality will degrade severely from that of the original AVCHD video. And all of the suggested intermediate files for Windows habe their disadvantages: DNxHD (and possibly UT) invoke the Apple QuirckTime API that induces a severe gamma shift in the encoded video (in the worst cases, whites come out medium-gray and middle tones come out pitch black) and is very slow to process due to it being restricted to 32-bit operations. Lagarith requires a massively powerful CPU - far more powerful than even a heavily overclocked i7-3960X - just to even play back well (this is based on my experience with Lagarith and my heavily overclocked i7-2600K, which dropped frames massively on playback of Lagarith-encoded material).

  • Screen artifacts while playing games with catalyst

    Hello. I recently switched back to Arch Linux (64-bit) and I'm running with the catalyst-hook package from Vi0L0's inofficial repository. When I play games, or also when I'm using hardware acceleration in VLC, these artifacts appear on the screen. They disappear quickly if you update the screen, so they are not so prevalent on the actual gaming screen. They however flood my second screen. In case of VLC they are just constantly blinking all over the place. I've googled the issue, but couldn't find anything that helped. If I alt-tab out of the game all artifacts disappear, but then reapper later after I've continued playing for a few minutes. This is very annoying.
    Is there anything that can fix this? Please help!
    This is the Xorg0.log right after I played a game where the issues occured:
