Artist music disappears

I have recently found two artists in my iTunes library whose music is no longer in my library, but is still on my hard drive. Does anyone know why or how this music has gotten deleted from my library? I am the only one who uses this computer and I am sure that I didn't accidentally delete it from my library. Has anyone had this happen to them? How can I fix it? I am now wondering how many other artist's music have been deleted from my library.

iTunes menu View > Column browser > Show colum browser.
Select the Artist(s) and or Album(s) you want.

    Hi Gary gar,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like the options at the bottom of the Music application may have been edited. You can click the More section on the far right, then choose Edit in the top right. You can then drag any options you want to that bottom bar and rearrange them.

Tired of tapping More? To rearrange the buttons, tap More, then tap Edit and drag a button onto the one you want to replace.

  • Certain artists' music mysteriously deleted from Macbook

Please help, and don't just tell me to Google it, because I did and I couldn't find anything helpful.
So, I don't listen to my iTunes library that much. It's probably been a few months, so I can't be entirely sure when this happened. But I just tried to play some music in iTunes and I discovered that iTunes was unable to locate some of my music. Specifically, it seems that three artists' music has been deleted from my computer. I searched in Finder for them, and they are not there at all. All of the songs by these three artists (and nothing else) have entirely disappeared. I absolutely did not delete them, because I love these three artists, and I know that they were once present on this computer because I've listened to them in iTunes on this computer before.
Some details: I'm using a Macbook Pro from 2011. I just upgraded to Mountain Lion (and this is the first time I've tried listening to iTunes since upgrading). I have an iPhone 4 on which I have most of my music (including the three missing artists, and I checked, and they play fine on the iPhone). Some of the missing music came directly from a CD, though I think most came from my external hard drive (transferred from my old computer). I don't think any of the music was bought through iTunes, so I can't get it back that way. I know that I can get it back from my hard drive or my iPhone, but I just want to know what happened. Why did exactly three artists get entirely deleted from my computer? I added pretty much all my music at the same time (except for that one CD of music, which was added later and is also missing), even stuff that isn't missing. I doubt that it was a problem with syncing to the iPhone, because most of the music I have is still present on both devices, and anyway I haven't tried to sync my iPhone music in ages.
If anyone can just tell me why this happened and how I can avoid it in the future, that's all I want. I know I can fix it, even though it might be a pain in the ***. I'm just so mad, and I want answers. If you need more info, just ask.
    Thanks.

I'm not sure how this happened, but I can try to help you get your music back.
Music purchased from the iTunes Store can be downloaded again for free. (not available in all countries)
Music ripped from CDs or synced through iTunes have to be synced through iTunes again.

  • IPod Apps no longer work, Music disappears, Fix?

QUESTION : How to fix permanently the “iPod Touch Breakdown“?
(seems identical to the iPhone “Breakdown“)
Since I upgraded to 2.0.2, running iTunes 7.7.1 (11) on a MacBook Pro G4, I keep having big trouble with Apps, Music and Films.
Here is what I call the “iPod Touch Breakdown“:
    - Apps won’t start : the iPod would go back to the home screen after a few seconds.
    - Music and Films disappear (My music consists essentially of personnal CDs).
    - (for me Photos are still there)
    - all original Apple Apps work OK
This is a known problem, also occuring on the iPhone with many posts on the iPhone discussions forum (see “iPhone“/“Installing and Using iPhone Applications“/“iPhone Applications no longer work“. At the time I write this messge, this question has been viewed 16,080 times ( ) (*) and there have been 319 replies: probably a sad record for a single question, which means that THERE REALLY IS A BASIC PROBLEM.
My iPod is a 8Gb purchased while staying in Pasadena, almost a year ago. I was extremely happy to use it more and more like a PDA (updates 2.0.1 and 2.0.2).
There have been some fixes proposed on the discussions forum (iPhone) that I tried and I have tried myself a couple more. NONE of them could fix the problem permanently: all fixes have been working for a day or two, no more. Untill you download an App (even an update) and you get the “Breakdown“ again.
As other users, I have noted a slowdown in anything I am doing (e.g. typing text) just before the Apps stop working and the music disappears. (see for instance Truth42 on iPhone Forum (Applications no longer work), Posted: Aug 25, 2008 10:57 AM)
Fixes: typically you get to disinstall and then reinstall all your Apps. Each time, you lose all your Apps parameters (bad for data bases and notes).
    Two ways:
see iPhone forum: Aveonz Posted: Aug 24, 2008 3:16 AM :
    1- sync using iTunes
2- in iTunes/Store: deauthorize your account
    3- sync
    4- authorize
5- sync (will re-load your Apps)
6- sync (to backup you new configuation)
(the whole process may take several hours; I have also done a reboot between 3 and 4)
(ii) proposed by various people :
    1- deselect all applications
    2- sync
3- disconnect your iPod and reboot it (pressing both buttons simultaneously for several seconds – see Apple site) (you keep you parameters, WiFi, etc)
4- select the Apps you want back
5- sync (will re-load your Apps)
6- sync (to backup you new configuation)
In the end you can use the Apps you have reloaded, but just for a few days (or hours)… until you cannot resist downloading a new App, or simply just download an App update. It won’t breakdown instantly after you do that, but it will very soon.
I certainly would take any procedure to fix this definitely. However, the best choice is probably to use as few third party Apps as possible (none is better) and wait for 2.1. Hopefully Apple is working on this, and we’ll get a definite fix very soon. This actually makes a very bad press for the iPod Touch and iPhone.
    Sadly,
because I think iPod Touch and iPhone are beautiful machines –but for how long? Competition is tough…
    Cheers
(*) about this number 16,080, obviously not all of the viewers experienced the “Breakdown“, but most were just curious to know. Still, the good question is to know how many of us, using the iPhone and iPod Touch experience this bug (virus?) and why some have it and not others (and in which proportion?).

Same issue here since updating to 2.0.2; Is there a way to back I wonder?
So I plugged back in my iPod touch and,...
    0. make a note of all your music, movies, photos, apps selections to restore
    1. cancel connect attempt to iTunes store (little 'x' in iTunes toolbar)
    2. cancel attempts to sync or backup (little 'x' in iTunes toolbar)
    3. clicked <OPTION>[Restore] once selecting my iPod touch device
    4. navigate to <home>/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Udpates/
    5. pick the prior update: iPod1,12.0.1_5B108Restore
    6. then waited through iPod window status displays
    'Preparing iPod software for restore...'
    'Restoring iPod software...'
    'Verifying iPod Software...'
    7. OK the 'Your iPod has been restored to factory settings,...'
    8. Ssync process did NOT automatically being so I unplugged & plugged it
(I did verify that 2.0.1 was loaded seeing the App Store)
    9. Pick 'Set up as a new iPod'; don't pick an earlier backup point
(mostly 'cause I couldn't be sure which was a good failsafe).
    10. iTunes then begin setup of my [ahem] new iPod.
STOP IT; it'll try and do restore everything. Then navigate the tabs for
your iPod and re-select those things you want (music, photos, movies, apps, etc)
So like any computer you need to keep proper backups.
The apple s/w system updater appears to do just that automatically, thanks! Of course it would've been nice to have had the 2.0.2 version tested a bit more before its release.
IMHO the host (mac) should have kept my prefs for the iPod rather than my resorting to handwritten notes but at least I'm back to normal. Consider when replacing an iPod how you'd want the replacement to be a mirror of its predecessor.
Oh, skip future requests to update to 2.0.2 until Apple can get his sorted out.

  • How do you stop synched iTunes music disappearing from my iPhone 5?

I have about 35G of music on my iTunes on my iMac, a good % of it having been purchased on ITunes.  The music sync setting for my iPhone 5 is automatic / everything.
For the past couple of months, I've been noticing music disappearing from my iPhone when it's offline (eg on the plane, when I listen to my music on my iPhone the most).  Such music would come back as "in the cloud" when I regain wifi / data access.  I would then download them onto my iPhone again.  And then they would disappear again!  How can I stop such annoying behavior?  Does switching music sync to manual help?  Thank you.

    Hello claire267
In the Messages app, in the drop down menu go to Messages > Preferences. Once there click the Accounts tab and then remove the iMessage account and that will stop all messages associate with your phone number from showing up on your computer.

  • Why is my music disappearing all the time and why is my ipod not being recognized?

First off, I'm horrible with computers, so if anyone answers this could please use layman terms? Okay, so i put music from my flash drive onto itunes and when it was taking over 2 minutes for the drive to eject, I just yanked it out (I know, not the smartest thing to do). But then all my music disappeared. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes but nothing happened. I then searched my music folders and found a file that was simply called itunes and had all my music in it. I copied and pasted it into itunes and all my music was back! Then I tried another flash drive with a couple songs on it and ejected it correctly this time.... but my music disappeared again. So i recopied and pasted the itunes music folder but I found that the music I tried to get from my flash drive wasn't on it.I tried to put music on from both flash drives again but the music got wiped again! I gave up on the flash drives and tired to fix itunes. In the control panel section where you can uninstall programs I clicked the repair option for itunes, hoping that would do something. It didn't. So by now, I've uninstalled then reinstalled itunes 3 or 4 times and can still get my music back from the itunes music folder but everytime I turn off or restert my computer the music goes all disappeary on me again. I have no Idea what is going on with itunes and I also can't sync my ipod. It isn't recognized by itunes and when I click on it in the devices section of the start menu, it shows a yellow triangle with an ! in it and when I left click it and select troubleshoot it says "Troubleshoot couldn't identify the problem". The ipod won't even charge when its plugged into the computer, it has to be plugged into a wallcharger. Please help!

Never mind, it somehow fixed itself. At least the itunes store did, but my ipod nano is still not able to sync.

  • 4.3 upgrade on 3GS, Music disappears from phone once you download a Podcast

Anyone having the same problem? Since I've upgraded to 4.3, if I download a podcast on my phone via wifi, all my music disappears and so do my podcasts. They are still on the phone but it says "there is no music, download from iTunes"
Music is easily restored if I connect the phone with my mac and play a song from my phone through iTunes.
Anyone know how to "cure" this?

The basics from the manual are reset, restart, restore.
Have you tried any of these?

  • I synced. All my music disappeared. Now it will only sync my apps and not my music. Is something wrong with the port on my ipod, the USB cord, or Itunes? On Itunes it says I still have all my music. :(

I synced my ipod to my computer and all my music disappeared. I tryed resyncing it and it would only sync my apps and not my music. I cant add music to my ipod. I something wrong with the USB port in the IPOD, the USB Cord, or ITUNES itself. Itunes still shows that all my music is there on my ipod. Itunes is recognizing that my ipod is connected, but it doesnt recognize that theres no music on my ipod anymore. Im so sad. Someone please help me. I miss my music.

The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases.
The ipod is not a storage/backup device.  It simply mirrors the selected content of your computer.
As the music came from your computer in the first place, it should still be there and in your backup copy of your computer.

  • Just updated to iOS8 and most of my music disappeared.  Attempted to sync with iTunes to get it back but iTunes now says I am 26GB over capacity and "Other" files are taking up just over 29GB!  What is going on and how do I fix this?

I had restored my iPhone 5 to factory settings and that cleared the problematic "Other" problem.  Flash forward a couple weeks and the problem has once again resurfaced.
I tried updating iTunes and iOS to the newest versions and the problem still persists.
I'm officially ready to switch to Windows Phone or Android now...
    *edit*
A Google search with results restricted to the last month shows that this problem seems to be becoming more and more common.

i upgraded iTunes to 10.5.1 and all my music disappeared after syncing.  How do I get it back?

I lost all my music, too - except for 3 pieces!? And I just upgraded, didn't choose sync'ing :-(((
Sure would like to get back my music, videos and playlists!
Most of it was my personal compositions/recordings, not bought at the iTunes store.

  • Music disappeared after i ran itunes match

almost half of my music disappeared from my desktop folders after I ran iTunes match. Now iTunes can't find the files to play them. What happened? and most importantly, Why? I've had a lot of this music for over 6 years

I have the same problem. And it feels like it is getting worse. I do not understand what is going on.

  • Why does my music disappear every time iTunes updates

I have music disappearing at an alarming rate out of iTunes. When I moved from my Sony to the MacBook, I complained that I have more then 20 days of music missing.  I am updating a new iPhone and 99 songs are now missing (songs that were present last week).  These were my top pick songs with a combination of downloaded CD's and downloaded purchase.  The name is listed and all of the information, but iTunes can not locate the music.  I also have digital music "skipping" in my playlist.
It seems that most of the music that is missing are CD's that I downloaded, but there is a good amount of purchased songs also missing.  I also have digital booklets and videos missing.  I have only used iTunes since the early 2000's.  I do have a lot of this missing music on both of my sony computers, but I have not updated iTunes on them in a long time.
How can I get my music back?  Most of the CD's I have gotten rid of because I don't see the point in waisting space.  I really do not want to return to a CD system for my company and personal use.  I enjoy using my iPhone for transporting my music from location to location.
    Thank you,
    E

    Hello E
Start with finding the path where the songs are on your PC by right clicking the songs that are missing in iTunes and click Get Info. You should get a window that pops up and in the Summary tab; the path will be there. Then navigate to where it was and see if the files exist. Other than that you can try to search your computer to find those files. Checkout the articles below for tips on finding the missing music, also if some of the tracks are downloaded from the iTunes Store you can download the tracks again by deleting the missing tracks from iTunes and then navigating to the purchases section in the iTunes Store to download them again.

  • After sync my music disappeared. Now I cannot get music back on phone!! I have one song on my ipod even though I synch with my playlists selected.

After sync my music disappeared. Now I cannot get music back on phone.  I selected playlists and triedeven loading allmusic.I have one song on my phone and cannot load any music back on it. Is there a setting I may have selected that needs to be changed???

Okay. I hope I can remeber all my steps exactly because I fixed my own problem...with absolutely no help from Apple. I opened itunes. I connected my ipod touch to my computer. On my itunes page that shows my songs in the upper right side under the search library box there is an itunes button and since I am connected there is an ipod button. DO NOT CLICK THE ARROW in the ipod button...just click in the mail part of the button. On mine it opened to a summary page that gave info on my ipod. The menu bar has Summary, Apps, Tones, Music and more. I clicked on the Music button. I chose to Sync the entire music library. That replaced what was on my ipod but what was on there was going to be put back on so I was okay with it. I then clicked the Sync button on the lower right side and it sync'd and all my songs are on my ipod again. I hope this might help someone else. Good luck.

  • Music disappears - recorded from concert

My daughter is a musician with a local community orchestra - and she has provided me with mp3's of the concerts. When I load them into itunes, they stay just a few days and then disappear. I also noticed that some ripped CD's also disappear. In both cases, I do have proper rights, so what is going on? I sent the files to family and they all experience the same issues with the concert music disappearing. I keep a copy on the desktop for easy re-load, but that seems silly.
    Suggestions anyone?
