Artist name for compilation albums (No album for artist alone present)

When I have a compilation album, fe Route 66 (including a song from Steppenwolf) and a Steppenwolf album (Steppenwolf : 16 greatest hits), i can see Steppenwolf in the 'artist view', and see the 2 albums.
When an artist only appears on a compilation album, but no individual album, the artist is not detectable in the artist view (except when using the search function).
Can this be solved ?
Thx in advance
Jan

THANK YOU!
I see the Album Artist tag from Windows file properties but not from within my tag editing programs.  Granted, I've had these since probably 2003-2004ish, perhaps the Album Artist tag wasn't around at that time?  I'm really unsure, I just know that they do not exist with any of my editors.
I highlighted all songs in the album folder, right clicked, hit properties, and set Album Artist for all songs.  They now all show up under album art entry.
This problem has been killing me for months and I have a couple albums I've been missing on my iPod because of it.  All is good now, thanks again!

  • IPhone 5 not showing artist name under each track in album view page like it used to

Hi. My iphone 5 is upto date software wise etc. When I go into music and select an album I get the track listing but no artist name under each track. All my music is correctly coded and it used to show up previously. Is this a change in the software or am I missing something? It's really annoying if you open a compilation as you have a track list but no way of knowing the artist unless you play the track.
    Please help.

  • Include jars for compiling and exclude jars for war

    Hello,
In the context of using ant to create a war, I have some doubts:
Actually to compile my web application codes, I put in classpath the following two jars as:
           <pathelement location="${lib.dir}/${servlet-api.jar}"/>
<pathelement location="${lib.dir}/${jsp-api.jar}"/>   without these two jars I would get compiling errors.
To create a war, I have to exclude these two jars:
       <lib dir="${webapp.dir}/WEB-INF/lib">
                 <exclude name="servlet-api.jar"/>
                 <exclude name="jsp-api.jar"/>
</lib>If I kept these two jars in the war, JBOSS application server would complain of duplicate classes.
My approach works. But my question is:
Is it the best practice to include jars for compiling codes and exclude jars if the application servers already have them?
    Best regards,
    Pengyou

Yes. That is the best practice.
In fact its the only practice to do it properly.
You are compiling against Interface only. Your code will work as long as that interface is implemented by the server, even if it does different things under the hood. This is what lets your web application work on whatever server you deploy it on - Jboss, Tomcat, Weblogic - it shouldn't matter as they all implement the same basic interfaces.
You could also expand that list to include common APIs which you know are available on your server if you don't want to bundle them with every web application.
JSTL jars are one potential example.

  • How to get compilations to show up as one album in Albums view

In albums view, the NPR Austin 100 song compilations (1 folder with 100 songs) I imported to itunes show up as 100 different albums with 1 song each, which is a mess and makes finding and viewing my regular 10+ song albums difficult. Also I want to be able to click play on those albums and it plays the 100 songs instead of having them scattered. How can I get the 100 songs to show up as 1 album with 100 songs instead of 100 albums with 1 song each? In songs view they all have the same genre (NPR Music's The Austin 100 (2013)). So far I checked "part of a compilation" and tried a few mass edits on every song like setting Album Artist to the same name, which got them in 1 album but the track numbers are messed up and most of these songs don't have track numbers so I'm back to square 1. I deleted the songs, imported the NPR folder again and set all songs to "part of a compilation." What next? I know I can make playlists but I tried that and it didn't solve the problem and I still see all these 1 song albums in albums view and on my phone. I'm not crazy about editing track numbers 1 by 1 on hundreds-thousands of songs. Maybe itunes needs to change something like ask questions when we import folders, eg "do you want all of these songs in 1 album?" and then it automatically assigns track numbers.
I just found this possible solution but we have to mess with scripts and it might not work for everyone Automatically Number Songs in iTunes

Generally setting a common Album title and Album Artist will fix things. For compilations of tracks by different artists set the album artist to Various Artists and also set Part of a compilation to Yes on the Options tab.

  • When locating a song via "Artists," the menu goes straight to albums

I think this has to do with my recent iPod update, as it didn't used to happen- when I scroll through the artist names all are present- but when you select an artist, for many of them (not all, not sure why not) it goes straight to the album of that artist of which you have the most songs. For example I have CCR's Chronicle, Volume 1, and when I go to CCR via Artists it goes straight to the songs in this album: I have no opportunity to hit "All" and view all of the music I have from them. The other songs are available, however by searching through the "Songs" list. That's just incredibly tedious and annoying. Does anyone else know how to fix this or is anyone having similar difficulty? Thanks.

Two things often contribute to this.
One is that some songs might be tagged as Part Of A Compilation (see the Get Info on those songs/albums) in which case they will not show up under the artist.
Second, is that an artist needs at least two different Albums identified for their songs to all list under the artist. In other words, if you import a CD with album name then add a handful of misc songs without album names associated, those handful will not show up under the artist name.
But add an album name to at least one of those handful of misc. songs and then ALL of the songs should show up under the artist.
You don't have to do it for all of them, just enough to have two different albums identified with the artist. But in general, it is a good idea to make sure your tunes have Song name, artist name, and album name associated with them as a minimum.

  • Compliation albums displaying as individual artists

I have imported a couple of complation albums (Very best of Later With Jools Holland Disc 1 and Disc 2 e.g.) but on the scrolling display in itunes it displayes an individual 'icon' for each artist in the compilation e.g. one for Adele, one for Kings of Leon etc. I'd like them to just be displayed as one album/one icon. How do you do this?

    Hi Heywogr
OK this happens when I think the CD is marked as a compilation. iTunes has a setting that reads Part of a Compilation. This setting is under Options when you select multiple songs, or on the Info tab when you select a single song. By choosing No, or unchecking this option it will deal with the CD as a single CD even though the songs come for multiple artists.
Try re-ripping the CD and choosing No for the Part of a Compilation option, and you will see that iTunes put all the songs in a single folder that has the name you chose for it.
    Hope this helps

  • I can't view artists name under title in compilations on my iphone

I am trying to find out a solution, but seems it's not solved yet.
On my Mac in iTunes my music collections is ordered by albums and compilations. All songs has a right tags. Albums has a Artists, Album Artists, Titles. Compilations has a check box Part of Compilation, Artist name, Title and Artist Album field are filed with Various Artists. But for some compilations I have deleted Album Artist just for experiment.
At iTunes all looks great, I have albums and compilation in that order what I want. But in my iPhone and iPad a cant see artist name under the songs title. It's uncomfortable and not user friendly as for me. Sure it's not an issue in albums when you have an one Artist and one his Album. But in compilation it's very complicated to find some tracks by title.
Please if you have any thoughts about how to view artists names in compilation under the tracks help me.
    Thank you in advance.

I have found the same problem topic with some pictures. If it's helps.

  • Some artists don't qappear in browser window for a playlist

I've been struggling to find a way to browse a large library of classical music. The browser window is a great idea but I can't find a way to add a browser window pane for the Composer tag. So I selected all the tracks with composer=beethoven and made a playlist.
I notice that some artists for tracks in the playlist don't appear in the Artist browser pane. (For example, Szell/ Cleveland Orchestra.) I don't know how many Artist names are missing from the Browser's Artist but there are at least 2 missing.
I can see the Artist name "Szell..." in the track listings for the playlist. If I'm browsing the library, I see "Szell ..." in the Browser window Artist pane. I just don't see "Szell ..." in the Artist Pane of the browser window for the Beethoven Playlist.
I tried deleting the Beethoven playlist and re-creating it. I get the same problem again.
I'm using iTunes for Windows v 4.7.1.30. I haven't upgraded to the latest iTunes for Windows because I see reports of problems after the upgrade.

My quess on weather or not an artist's name appears
depends on the nature and quality of the CD. On my CDs
of Beethoven symphonies or piano concertos Beethoven's name
    will appear.
As I said in my first message, the artist name appears in the track listing. I have edited the tags to show the correct composer ("Beethoven" in this case) and to show the soloist then conductor and then the orchestra in the artist tag. ("Szell/ Cleveland orchestra" in this case.)
I see the "Szell..." in the artist field for the tracks for the symphonies conducted by Szee in my library. When I select Library in the source list, I see "Szell..." in the Artist Browser list. However, when I select the Beethoven playlist, I don't see "Szell ..." in the Artist Browser list. I see the tracks listed and the Artist field says "Szell ..." as expected.
This isn't a problem with the information in the CDDB database iTunes uses to get the tag values it assigns to tracks from a CD. I've edited the tags to fit my conventions.

so i downloaded the song "kiss kiss" by chris brown into my playlist and into my library on itunes. it shows up in my iPod but when i go to "Artists" it doesn't show the song. it shows it in all of the other sections though (songs, english song playlist, albums, etc.)

I have some MP3's that do not show up correctly in my Itunes and on my Ipod. They do not populate the artist field or album field in Itunes. Any way to edit this to add it.

Perhaps one of these two issue is the problem...

  • Artists names duplicated in iTunes Library

I'm still using iTunes 6.5 on my system. I haven't upgraded yet and I don't know if I'll do. However, I have a question. Why do I have multiple listings for the same artist if only the album (CD) or source changes. For example, I may have three (3) listing for The Eagles for each album (CD). Shouldn't I have only one (1) listing for the Eagles, with all of the albums (CD) listed. IT's crazy, because when I want to select an artist, I have multiple listings instead of one.

You may have the artist name typed in multiple ways. For example, extra spaces may not show up or not be noticed, but iTunes will take each different name literally as a different artist. The solution, usually, is to select ALL the songs by the same artist at the same time. Now do a Get Info which you will be a get info for all of them at once. If the artist field is blank, then that confirms that you have alternate spellings (only fields that are the same for ALL the selected files will be shown with their filled in values). At this point, simply type in the artist name once in that field and hitting OK will apply that single spelling to ALL the selected files. You should now have everything under a single artist.

  • Wierd duplication of artist names

The weirdest thing is happening with my iPod.
In the Artist list on the ipod some artists are listed twice. All of the songs by that artist are listed under both, so it's not the normal thing with an extra space or something in the artis name. The songs are not duplicated in iTunes, only on my iPod.
    Anybody know what's up?

I'm having exactly the same issue, but the "apply sort field/same artist" solution did not work for me.
I know that my problem is not due to a misspelling of the artist name, nor an extra space in the artist name. The artist shows up twice on my iPod, but not in iTunes. It did not show up twice until I began using an iPod Classic this week, instead of my old iPod Photo. I updated from iTunes 7.2 to 7.5 at the same time that I switched to the iPod Classic, so I guess this could be due to either the different iPod or the different version of iTunes.
Not only do all the artist's albums appear under both artist listings, but when I play a song under one of the artist listings and then go to the duplicate one, it shows that same song playing.
    I'm totally baffled!

  • Itunes artist list display - compilations

    Hi there,
Wondering if anyone can help me...
When I view itunes as a list - under the artist list, it starts with 'All', then 'compilations', then starts the alphabetized list of artists......I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how i can move artists listed under 'compilations' and simply have their artist names listed with all the other artists (under 'All')? (This occurs with past and present versions of itunes).
I've got hundreds of artists listed and lose track of what's under 'compilations'.
Thank you in advance for your time and insight.

  • Artist name not showing properly on phone after sync

Certain artists that style their name in a certain way ("MaHi" for example) refuse to properly display this styling on my iPhone 5 running iOS 7.1.2. I recently purchased some of MaHi's songs through iTunes and I suspect this to be the problem as none of my "non-iTunes" music have this problem. In iTunes on my desktop, the name is displayed properly as "MaHi" with the capital H. However, no matter what I do it seems, my phone and iOS refuse to to display the artist's name with the proper capitals. Every single time it reverts to "Mahi" which is incorrect. I have converted the purchased music to MP3s, stripped the tags, and reimported the songs and yet still have this issue. This leads me to believe it's some stupid thing going on with some kind of syncing up to the iTunes Store and pulling the artist name because it's incorrect on the artist's store page as well. Does anyone have a potential workaround for this or even a fix?

  • Artist name shows under song name in itunes

in my itunes library, in the artist view, i go to the artist i want to listen to, then all of albums show up, some albums, have the artist name under the song, i look at the info of the entire album(songs on that album) and the artist and album artist are the same(copy and paste both sections) Songs that have artist name under song, also have the same artist on other songs that don't have the artist name under song, When i go to my music, i right click on songs that have artist name under song in itunes, and it also looks the same as the ones that don't, I ACTUALLY LIKE IT BETTER IF THE NAME OF THE ARTIST APPEARS UNDER THE SONG, it looks nicer

When you say adding your music again to your iTunes library, do you mean importing again from your cds, or have you used some other method to get the music from your iPod into iTunes?

  • 7 good reasons, why artist=album name is not the solution for compilations

    Hi,
in this forum everytime the compilations-problem is discussed, somebody comes up with the solution to fill the album-name into the artist name field and to set the song-title name to "Artist / Song-Title". This might help with the cover-flow issue but does have the following downsides:
7 good reasons, why artist=album name is no alternative for compilations
    ========================================================================
    1) It messes up the artist search.
    2) Unability to turn the display of artists on compilations on or off on demand without changing all the tags
    3) The mp3 tags are not used in the standard way
    4) "Artist / Song-Title" as song-title name is often too long to display
    5) The album name appears twice in the song information display when the song is playing (as the artist name and as the album name)
    6) This is not consistent with how it works in iTunes
    7) People owning a lot of compilations are forced to do A LOT of manual changes only to "fix it" back when (hopefully soon) a new firmware fixing this issue arrives
I already posted this as an answer in another thread but I thought it might be helpful to discuss this in an own thread. What do you think about the reasons? Can you add additional reasons?
If Apple really left out the compilations-flag on purpose (see http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5401783#5401783) we might need some good arguments to bring it back in.
    Best regards, Jens

Yes, I agree with your list. I also think it is inconceivable that Apple simply forgot to add the compilations feature. There obviously has to be a good reason for this. However, I haven't got a clue what that reason might be.
