Artistic Filters in CS3

Hi guys,
i have photoshop cs3 installed on several machines on a network. It all seems to work fine except the artistic filters. i can select a filter and preview it ok but when i apply them nothing happens, the filters will not apply. Help me please!!!

What kind of image format are you using them on?
Do they work with 8-bit rgb files?
If not try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776?tstart=0
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.

  • Photoshop CS3 Artistic Filters

I am applying Artistic filters to an image in Photoshop. Some of the filters are turning the image into a black and white image, for example, the "torn edges filter." And it then does not seem possible to change that layer into a colored layer. Other filters, such as "glass" leave the image its original color. Is it possible to use the torn edges filter without turning the image black and white?

    Quote from the Help:
    Torn Edges
Reconstructs the image so that it appears composed of ragged, torn pieces of paper, and then colorizes the image using the foreground and background colors. This filter is particularly useful for text or high-contrast objects.

  • Ability to add artistic filters to HDR image created in CS5?

    Hi,
I created an HDR image last night in CS5 but it wouldn't let me apply any of the artistic filters to it.  Is that just not possible or must I do something else first in order to apply filters?   It seems to work fine with HDR created in Photomatix...just wasn't working on the one I created in Photoshop.
    Thanks for your help!

As I work around, I found that you can save the image off as a jpeg, then open that version to edit and you are able to apply any of the filters (artistic/brushstrokes/distort, etc.).  If anyone knows of an easier way, please let me know.
    Thanks!

  • No Artistic Filters PS CS5

Tried to use Artistic filters in PS CS5. Grayed out. Thought maybe I needed an update.Tried to get one. Got message to download a version of application manager. Followed instruction. Would not load, told to get Adobe Support Adviser. Clicked on the link. Got a page saying there was no longer such a thing as support adviser. Completely flummoxed.

Thanks for letting me know. That problem showed up a few days ago in these forums. It was a CMYK file, and like you the owner thought Photoshop "lost" the filters.
I'm glad to hear you back in business.

    Have you deleted your prefs?
    From the Photoshop help files:
Restore all preferences to default settings
    Do one of the following:
Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) as you start Photoshop. You are prompted to delete the current settings.
(Mac OS only) Open the Preferences folder in the Library folder, and drag the Adobe Photoshop CS Settings folder to the Trash.
New Preferences files are created the next time you start Photoshop.
If that does not work reinstall.

  • Many brush and artistic filters don't handle transparent pixels

I had made some text, then rasterized it and I was going to apply the sprayed stroke filter to rough it up, but it doesn't do anything.  Seems this filter (and several others) can't alter a layer's alpha (transparency) channel.  Is that supposed to be the case?  I would've expected it to treat the alpha channel the same as the color channels.  I don't have the channel transparency locked.  There are workarounds for this, but I wondered if maybe anybody else had encountered this and knows if I'm doing something wrong.

Yeah, a lot of the older artistic filters don't handle transparency, or CMYK, or 16 bit/channel, etc.

  • CS5 Unavailable "Artistic Filters"

I recently thought it would be nice to generate some 'pencil sketch' filtered images for a project, but when I looked at an image (.psd) to manipulate, the option was grayed out. CS5 has been a great tool for me and I usually upgrade every other version release, so CS7 would be my next upgrade.
Did I miss something in the install way back when?
    Is it fixable?
Is there another reason why this option is grayed out?
    TIA
    Jack

That was it! I was working in 16-bit. When I switched to 8-bit, the filters became available.

  • I can't find the artistic filters in PS 2014.

I'd still love to use them occasionally, but I have to revert to an older version to use them.  Are they available in another Adobe program now?
    Thanks.

They seem to be under Filter menu > Filter Gallery...   Unless you mean something else.

  • Download CS3 filters

Hi, I have two questions. First, is it possible to download
flash filters for cs3 besides the stock filters that come with the
program? Second, if so, does anyone know of a good resource to
    download these filters? Thanks.

What does the error message indicate?  Try using a different browser.
The link you show is for CS6 dwnloads, not CS3.  For CS3 use the fllowng

  • I am using Photoshop as external editor but can't use all the filters

    Hi,
I have just started using Aperture and have set-up photoshop CS2 as the external editor. I'm trying to add film grain to some of my images using the artistic filters. If I open one of my RAW (EOS 5D) images in Bridge once open in CS2 all the filters are available for use.
If I select a RAW image in Aperture and use the open with external editor feature, once the image is launched in CS2, half the filters are unavailable. Why is this and how do I over come the problem? Is it because Apertur opens the file in a funny format?
Many thanks in advance for your help

a few filters will (or have already) changed in cs3, however most remain the same in terms of 8 vs 16 bit. filters who are based on the rgb channels will be "grayed out" in the filters menu if an image has 16bit colours (regardless of tiff or psd of course).

  • Co-workers using CS3, I'm getting CS4. File incompatibilities?

I work with two graphic artists that use CS3. I will most likely be purchasing a new iMac this weekend and I'm assuming that I will only have CS4 available to buy unless I look for CS3 on ebay or something.
Will there be many file incompatibilities if I'm using CS4 while the other artists are using CS3? Example, if I create something in CS4 will I need to downsave to CS3 so the other artists can open it - or will that even be necessary?
Are there any other issues that could arise?
    Thanks in advance!
    Daryl

Don't be embarrassed - I had to ask a co-worker just to make sure before I
told you. They have to do the same for me - except they are saving cs3 files
    down to cs1.
Anyway, it should work the same for your daughter...
First thing I would do is make a copy of the file for safe-keeping. After
she has done this select all the fonts (if there are any) and go to "Type >
Create Outlines." This will keep the fonts from being substituted for a
different font when you convert from c34 to 3. However, you can't retype
over the fonts once this is done (hence making a copy of the file).
I always keep two versions of a file. One with the type intact and one with
    the type converted to outlines.
Now - to save down to cs3....
With the file open (the one converted to outlines)  - Go to ³File > Save As
Save² then click the dropdown next to ³Version² and select Illustrator
    CS3. That should do it.
Please don't hesitate to email back if you need more help or have a
    question.

  • Want to posterize, but Filter Artistic greyed out in PS CS5

OK, I'm stumped. Want to posterize an image from Lightroom 5.4. Sent it to Photoshop CS5 using Lightroom's Edit In command. When I try to select Filter > Artistic to posterize, Artistic is greyed out and I can't select it.
Same thing happens with both *.tif and ^.psd formats.
What do I need to do to get this to work?
    Thanks.
    Mark

    Posterize would be under adjustments.
And the artistic filters are part of the Filter Gallery, which only works for RGB and Grayscale images in 8 bits/channel, and up to 30,000 pixels on a side.
The file format doesn't matter - the image size and mode are what matters.

  • Artistic filter plugin recommendations?

Are there better artistic filter plugins out there than what ships with Photoshop? (Colored pencil, dry brush, etc.)
I find none of the native artistic filters very convincing, and thought there might be better stuff out there that I'm not aware of.
I'm trying not to be too specific with my question, because there might be something really cool I didn't consider. But off-hand, I'm referring to plugins that make a photo look like it was hand-painted or pencl-drawn, or one that will add paint daubs/splashes to dirty/grunge it up...
    Thanks.

Actually those native art plugins can be more effective than you might think though I do like Snap Art personally too. There is are several good books out there just on how to use those native filters including an effects encylopedia of sorts. Once you understand what settings to use and how to use them they are every bit as good as a lot of the extra plugs you can buy for art effects. Most of them applied direct with the standard settings don't do much, but applying them on a copy of a layer over the original, and changing the settings can make a huge difference in how they look and how they work for you. One of the books "Photoshop Filter Finesse" is the one I started with and although it's an old book I still find it very useful as those native art filters really haven't changed much at all over the years. I've seen the encylopedia at the library too, but I'm waiting for a more current copy of that one to come out as well.
