Artists/albums/songs list too long!  Shortcut?

Hi,
I've got so many artists in my iPod's list, it takes me far too long to find songs. Not so bad when you're walking around, but terrible when I'm in the car with the iTrip and I'm trying to find a song!
Is there any way I can break the Artists/Albums/Songs lists down into like.. A-K, L-Z? Or jump to a particular letter faster than 1 line at a time? I have looked in the settings but I can't find anything relevant.
If this isn't possible, maybe it would be a good idea for a future iPod feature?
Thanks!

It isn't about how many tunes - rather the size of the files.
Look at the bottom of the iTunes window when viewing a playlist - it will show you number of tunes, time of playlist and the size of the entire playlist.

  • Can't listen to any music on my iPhone 5, when I press play it just skips to the next song, does that for a few seconds, then goes back to artist/album/song list. HELP!!

I just updated my iTunes on my laptop to the newest version. I connected my iPhone five to the laptop, and it asked me something about a restore. I wasn't thinking, confused "restore" with "sync" and I just hit yes.... I know, dumb. Anyways, I logged into iTunes on my laptop, downloaded all my purchased songs through the cloud, did a backup, then disconnected it. When I used my phone again, everything was different. All my backgrounds had changed, my apps were rearranged, I had old apps on my phone that I had previously deleted, etc., all signs pointing to me restoring my phone to a previous version.. None of that bothered me, I knew how to deal with it and just changed everything back to the way I had it before the restore, and everything was fine.
Until I went to listen to some music on my iPod. I made my album choice, selected a song, and instead if it playing, it was silence. I looked at my phone and it was skipping through the songs without ever playing a single sound. That bar that shows how far through the song you are? It never moved from zero, but my songs were skipping and skipping and skipping, almost like I was hitting the "skip track" button, only faster.
Should I re-restore my phone? Would that possibly fix it? I've checked, and my iOS and my iTunes and iPod version are all up to date.
PLEASE HELP ME!! I can't find this topic anywhere in support, and I NEEEEEED my music.

    Hello avenmaven,
Thank you for all the information you provided, and congratulations on your new laptop!
I do not think this has to do with setting up iCloud on your new computer.  You might not have the option to manually manage music checked on your devices.  This box would need to be checked if you are dragging content over to your iPhone or trying to delete by pressing the delete key:
You can find more information at the full article:

  • Screen Goes Black and Hangs when browsing by Artist, Album, Song, etc.

I'm having a fairly huge issue with Front Row:
I can play video files (although their is a moment of hangtime between selecting a video and the video actually playing) and music files (if I choose the "Shuffle Songs" option), however, when I choose to browse my music by artists, albums, songs, genres, etc. my screen goes black and stays that way until I hit CMD+Q over and over until it finally quits. Furthermore, when I do play music via "Shuffle Songs" and quit out of Front Row, the music continues to play in the background and cannot be stopped, paused, etc.
Is there anyone out there who can help me fix this? I love Front Row and use it all the time and it would be a shame not to be able to anymore..
    Thanks in advance,
    Corey

I have a similar problem. When browsing music the screen goes to black or just freezes on whatever was beeing displayed for maybe 30 seconds to a minute before continuing. It happens quite often. I am running the latest version of Front Row on a brand new Mac Mini. I have a very large iTunes music folder (about 830 gigabytes of uncompressed AIFF files) running on an external FW800 drive. I tried repairing permissions and a number of Front Row and a few iTunes files appear in the list. However, when I run repair permissions again, the same files are still listed so obviously if they need to be repaired, it's not happening. I tried repairing the volume (no problems found) and repairing permissions from the Install disc but the result was identical.

  • Argument list too long

I got a directory of about 40.000 files.
I'd like to abuse jar for archiving those files because
    a) I'm used to the syntax of jar
    b) I thought that enabling indexing, the search for a single file could be very fast.
    I said:
    > jar -cfi ../blues.jar *
    and I got:
    > jar: Argument list too long
I got this error on linux, using jar of jdk-1.4.2-beta.
Is this a problem only of the linux-jar?
I started to test this out on an windows pc, but hadn't the time to finish the test, but it looked, as if it would work, because it didn't fail for the first 20 Minutes :).
(It fails nearly immideately on linux).
Is this an error of jar, or of bash?
Would it work, if I create a shell-script, which adds the files one by one?
Will an index really speed up the search for a single file?
It seems to me, as if only directorys are mentioned in the index-file?
Is there a well defined maximum of files that can be put into a jar file?

    I found the answer.
    It's a bash-related problem.
It's making a list of all that files, and this is too big.
    If I change my command:
    jar -cfi ../blues.jar .
the directory is visited file by file and there's no problem about 40.000 files (it only takes 20 minutes :)

How large is ARG_MAX in /usr/src/linux/include/linux/limits.h and

  • Cp leads to  "error processing extended attributes: Argument list too long"

With certain PDF files to which I've added a lot of extended attributes (using Skim.app, a PDF reader/annotator which stores its notes in extended attributes), Chronosync and Finder drag-drops don't preserve extended attributes like they're supposed to (i.e. the notes aren't viewable on copies of the document). When I use cp to do they copying, the following message appears in system.log:
error processing extended attributes: Argument list too long
    Googling it returns no results

    Hi Derick,
error processing extended attributes: Argument list too long
I have no idea why you get this error when copying a file...
There is a max size for each extended attribute (about 3800bytes), and if I try to create (by using a simple C program) an attribute larger than this limit then I get "Argument list too long" error. But in your case you are trying to make a copy of an existing PDF file whose extended attributes should be smaller than the limit, of course (Skim has no magical power of creating an attribute larger than the limit; if the note is too large then I guess Skim just splits the note into two or more attributes).
Q1: do you get the error only if you (try to) copy a PDF file with large notes? or you also get the error for a file with only small notes? How about a PDF file with many small notes?
Q2: are you copying the PDF file to external volumes? If so, are you sure it is HFS+? What happens if you copy the PDF file to the same internal disk volume, for example
    cp your.pdf tmp.pdf

  • Buildall.sh env: javac: Arg list too long

Hi, Having trouble building dbxml in SmartOS (opensolaris).
While building Berkeley DB for Java in a long javac command, the script breaks with error:
env: javac: Arg list too long
    make: *** [db.jar] Error 126
    $ getconf ARG_MAX
    1048320
returns a fairly high number - I built the same on FreeBSD with a much smaller number.
Any suggestions on how to get this built and what is causing the problem?
    Thanks in advance!

    WORK AROUND:
    cd ./dbxml-2.5.16/db-4.8.26/build_unix
create file dbsrcs.txt that lists all the java source files listed in the JAVA_DBSRCS environment variable
    it should look like this:
    ../dist/../java/src/com/sleepycat/util/ErrorBuffer.java
    ../dist/../java/src/com/sleepycat/util/ExceptionWrapper.java
    ../dist/../java/src/com/sleepycat/util/ExceptionUnwrapper.java
    ../dist/../java/src/com/sleepycat/util/PackedInteger.java
    ../dist/../java/src/com/sleepycat/util/keyrange/KeyRange.java
save dbsrcs.txt file inside dbxml-2.5.16/db-4.8.26/build_unix directory
    # nano Makefile
    find line:
      $(JAVAC) -d $(JAVA_CLASSTOP) $(JAVACFLAGS) $(JAVA_DBSRCS)
    and replace with
      $(JAVAC) -d $(JAVA_CLASSTOP) $(JAVACFLAGS) @dbsrcs.txt
while inside the dbxml-2.5.16/db-4.8.26/build_unix directory, run make, to just compile Berkeley DB only
once completed, go back to dbxml-2.5.16 and run
    ./buildall.sh --enable-java
since Berkeley DB was already built, the build script will see this and skip the Berkeley DB compile since it's already compiled!

  • Shell script to copy Music/Artists/Albums/Songs to Music2/Artists/Songs

    Hi,
My Music folder is currently organized as follows (standard iTunes behaviour):
    Music
    Artists
    Albums
    Songs
    Artist1
    Album1
    Song11
    Song12
    Song13
    Album2
    Song21
    Song22
    Artist2
    Album1
    Song11
    Song12
    Album2
    Song21
    Song22
    Song23
    etc.
I would like to copy this Music Folder to an USB flash drive, but without the "Albums" level, i.e.:
    Music2
    Artists
    Songs
    Artist1
    Song11
    Song12
    Song13
    Song21
    Song22
    Artist2
    Song11
    Song12
    Song21
    Song22
    Song23
I assume that an unix shell script is able to do this, but this is beyond my skills
Or do you know a software that can manipulate files in such a way?
    Thanks in advance.

OK, clear. For future runs, should I be better off runing the command in a directory on my Mac, and copy the resulting music folder to the USB drive?
No, the optimum solution would be to format the thumb drive with the HFS+ filesystem. You could use cp, ditto, or rsync will the proper options and not copy the file fork to the thumbdrive. Or you could  filter out the file forks in the two find commands.
ls | while read dir; do
        find "${dir}" -type f ! -name "._*" \( -name "*.mp3" -o -name "*.m4a" \) -print0 | xargs -0 -I '{}' mv -n "{}" "${dir}"
    done
    find . -type f ! -name "._*" \( -name "*.mp3" -o -name "*.m4a" \) -mindepth 3 | while read file; do
         base=${file%\/*}
         base=${base##*\/}
         mv "${file}" "${file%*\/*\/*}"/"$base"_"${file##*\/}"
    done
The warning or error messages are innocuous anyways.
OK. I removed them manually, which took me less than one minute. Should I add a "rm -r .DS_Store" step before future runs?
    I wouldn't bother. Change->
find . -type d -empty -delete
    to
    find . -type d -mindepth 2 -maxdepth 2 -exec rm -rf '{}' '+'

  • Alphabetical Navigation on right side for Artists/Albums/Songs (Mobile)

There's a utility that allows you to move through alphabetical lists quickly via a thin alphabetical list on the right side of a list. For long alphabetical lists, this is almost necessary to quickly get to where you're going. Adding this to the right side of the Your Music sections that are alphabetically organized would be incredibly helpful.

I couldn't find a topic for this so I made my own. I got forwarded here by an admin. I'll just post my mockup here:
Original postI really want to see fast scrollbars implemented in the android mobile app. It's a small detail, but it makes a huge difference in terms of speed when trying to quickly find a specific artist, album or song inside Your Music. It would also be great to have it in regular playlists when they have alphabetical sorting enabled.
Examples of it implemented in stock android, KK Dialer and Action Launcher 3                 Mockup of Spotify implementation:

  • Printing up a Artist-Album-Track List from a folder?

Is there a way to print up a list with this information so that I can see what I have?
I'm basically wanting to get all of my music into Lossless format and want to get rid of all mp3's and I want to compare the two folders in a list.

    Hey,
If you already have all the media in iTunes...
First option I would suggest is a "Smart Playlist" in iTunes that shows all Apple Lossless tracks. Using a smart playlist will keep it updated as you reimport music in the lossless format.
    File > New Smart Playlist
    Match The Following Rule Checked
    Kind Contains "Lossless"
Another option is to use the iTunes > Print option
First switch to "List View" and "sort by Artist" so that all Artists/Albums are lumped together.
Next, right click on the Horizontal Nav Bar in iTunes and click "Kind"
Drag Kind over to the Far Left so that it is easily visible.
Go to File > Print > Song List > Custom
This will print the current view you have in iTunes, so you will get a long list of songs with the media kind on the far left. You can either print this or save it to a PDF, which requires much less ink/paper.

  • Problem with Displaying Artists/Albums/Songs on iPhone 4S

I purchased the 64GB iPhone 4S and went to load all of my music library onto it (a little over 30GB worth).  I believe all the songs are on the phone but I'm having a problem.  Not all of them are listed.  It's especially noticiable in the artists and albums section.  In both of those sections, while each list is in alphabetical order, the artists/albums start to get listed in the wrong part of the alphebet.  For example, in the Album section, while it ends with the 123's, the albums listed there start with R, which is where the albums end.  The same goes for the artists.  So, currently, I can't look for "Who's Next?" by the Who via either of those routes.  The problem with the songs is a little different.  While I believe all the songs are there, while they start out in alphabetical order, they soon start to become jumbled.  It seems it's trying to keep them in order; but it can't.  For example, songs beginning with 'L' start during the letter 'J' category.  Does anyone know what I can do to get all the albums and artists to list on my phone and how I can get the songs to display in alpahbetical order?  Thanks for any help you can provide.

You won't see Viber data in www.icloud.com.  App data (e.g. Viber) is included in an iCloud backup or iTunes backup which includes other information.  Kindly see this support article for more information - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766, https://support.apple.com/kb/ht4946 and http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12519.

  • Copying artist/album/songs titles into word document

i am wanting to to copy the artist, albums and song titles into word so i can print it out and store a hard copy with my back-up dvd that i did?
    is it possible?
many thanks if anyone can help

I'm not sure how you can get this information into Word, but you can print a list with the following columns: song/length/artist/album for your entire library in iTunes. To do this, make sure you're in your main library and that you have your music listed in the order you want the final document to appear. Then on the top line select File>Print> then put a check mark in the song listing circle and hit okay. You should get a printed list of everything in your library.
