Artists DO NOT Appear on iPod Directory

This is kind of annoying: Some of the artists do not appear on my iPod's "Artist" directory, so I have to look under "Albums" to find the artist that way. Anyone have any idea what could cause this?
Message was edited by: crazychavo

There are usually two things that contribute to songs not appearing under Artist on the iPod, both due to information either in or missing from the Get Info>Info tab against the song in iTunes. 1) the song is marked as part of a compilation or 2) the song has no album name associated with it.
if the tracks are ticked in the Get Info>Info tab as part of a compilation, they will not appear under Artist on the iPod. Highlight a song in iTunes that you know is not appearing correctly on your iPod. Right click on it and choose Get Info and click the Info tab (alternatively choose Get Info from the File menu), if "Part of a Compilation" is marked untick it and afterwards update your iPod, you should find it now appears as normal. If you are using iTunes 8 and view the multiple items info box the compilations setting is in the "Options" tab. Setting "Compilations" on your iPod main menu prevents you getting lots of single artist entries when you load an album by various artists.
Also if the tracks are missing an Album name in the Info tab, this information needs to be filled in. The no album one is a bit quirky as the songs will appear under certain circumstances (for instance I read somewhere that if you have at least two tracks with different album names the rest will appear), however the simplest remedy is just add None or Miscellaneous to all the blanks in place of a title. • Please help! Artist names not appearing in ipod after syncing!

Hey there everyone, I really really need some help with this problem that I have now had for 2 months. I have this problem on 3 different ipods so I know it is not a problem with the ipod, it is with itunes.
My itunes library is in perfect order and set up how I want it to be when in my ipod, e.g, every song has the artist, album and song name in the correct places in the 'get info' tab, and appears in the correct places in the itunes library.
However, when I synchronise my ipod with itunes, the artist tab in the ipod consistently says 'no artists'. However, the songs are in the songs tab and albums in the albums tab, but it doesn't register the artists. Because of this I can't search for the artists I want.
I have spoken to apple numerous times and they haven't been able to tell me what is wrong with it. I'm at my wits end with this and so greatly appreciate any help or advice anyone can give.
Things I have tried so far include, changing ipods, selecting all as part of a compilation, deleting the music from itunes and then putting back into itunes. None of this has worked.
    Please help
    Thanks

  • Artist name not appearing in list

I received a new Ipod Classic 160GB for Christmas. I have transferred some CD's to it and some of the names of the artists are not appearing in the list of names. The albums are there - is there any way to get these to display? Thanks!

... and as well as the helpful answers provided by planb77 and Jeff there is another little trick you could try.
Remove the Compilations heading from the *Main Menu* of your iPod. This will then cause all the artists who only appear on compilation albums to appear on the iPod/music/Artists* list.
To remove the Compilations heading, go to *Settings/Main Menu* and make sure Compilations does not have a tick next to it.

    - Make sure the mic hole is clear and unobstructed. It is the little hole on the back by the camera lens(if has back camera). For the 16 GB one without the back camera the mic hole is on the top edge near the center.
    - Open the Voice Memos app and see if you see movement on the VU meter needle or changes in the moving waveform graph with changes in noise level trying to be recorded.

  • I have a single song that is on my iPod Classic 7 but the artist does not appear and under "artists" in the music it doesn't appear, nor does it in albums. All the information on the song is correct the artist just will not appear. Why is this?

All the information is correct and filled correctly, I have chacked seven times, but it still will not appear, why?

Any funny characters in the artist or album names? I take it that it is not hiding for the reasons given in Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist? Sort fields can sometimes cause items to be listed in a different place within the list. Can you find it using search on the device?

  • Audio books not appearing in iPod list

    I have an 80gb 5g.
I recently purchased an audio book from iTunes and downloaded to my library. The book appears in the directory tree list under audiobooks and when I sync the ipod the audiobook item is also in the directory tree under "Devices".
However the Audiobook tab does not appear in the Summary on the RH window in iTunes and does not appear on the iPod as a heading "Audiobooks" To access the audiobook I have to scroll down the "artists" list - I find this rather strange.
Anyone having the same problem - or am I missing something?

I will go look to see if my audio book shows up like yours did.
My issue sounds similar. I bought a book from itunes and downloaded it. I can listen to it on my laptop without an issue. When I move it to my 30G Video Ipod, it shows up in the AudioBook folder when I view that folder via the computer. However, when I disconnect the Ipod from the laptop, the audio book does not appear in the audio book folder.

  • IOS 4.3 Home Sharing:  "Shared" Not Appearing In iPod

I just updated to 4.3 today and enabled Home Sharing on my computer immediately afterwards. The account showed "On, no users connected" under iTunes preferences on the computer, and iTunes was open and running the entire time I attempted the following:
When the update finished on the phone, I found the Home Sharing section under Settings > iPod, and I entered the appropriate username and password for the Home Sharing account (correctly, I might add - I've fat-fingered many passwords in the past, so I took extra care this time). After connecting my iPhone to my home wifi network (the same one as the computer in question), I opened the iPod app and went to "More," but the "Shared" option did not appear at all. I hard-reset my phone to no success, so I then restored my phone to factory settings through iTunes and attempted to just connect to wifi and enter the AppleID and password for Home Sharing, but it still will not populate the "Shared" option. I am now very confused.
    Help?

I was having the same problem as this but got it working now thanks to this suggestion. Because I had previously (over a year ago) copied my itunes library when I got a new hard drive, I had to recreate my itunes library.
Home sharing is working fine now, but it does seem to have got rid of any changes to the ID3 tags I'd made. For instance some artist info I'd changed to match the album artist has reverted, and some TV shows were labelled as movies, so I changed them, but now they're back in the movies section.
JUST HAD A LOOK AROUND ITUNES AND IT SEEMS TO HAVE SCREWED A LOT OF THINGS UP. Lost all my apps, ringtones, etc. and when I go to my iphone in itunes nothing's syncing and if I mark the checkboxes for it to sync, the bar at the bottom seems to suggest it's going to delete pretty much everything. Time to see if I can restore it as it was. Home sharing isn't worth this much hassle...

Ok, so I've now got my iTunes library back (by dragging the file I'd trashed when following the advice above back to the iTunes directory) and everything seems to be syncing properly, and once again home sharing isn't working.
It looks like the problem is with the library ID, but the only way to fix it screws up a whole lot more.

  • "Sort Artist" does not work on iPod / How to sort by album artist

I have many albums in my music collection that contain songs by different artists. In iTunes, I have set all these songs to the same "Sort Artist" so that they all appear under the same artist's name (the album artist's name).
However, when I sync my iPod, the "Sort Artist" settings don't carry over. For example, a compilation album with 10 songs by 10 different artists would show up under one single artist in iTunes (per my sort artist settings), but on the iPod the songs show up under 10 different artists. Is there any way to fix this problem? I basically want to sort my music by album artist, instead of just the artist.
The strange part is when I browse my iPod on my computer, the compilation albums are properly sorted under one artist, but it's still wrong when I browse on the iPod itself.

It could be that you have inadvertently imported these CDs into iTunes as part of a compilation. If so, the artists won't show in the artists menu on the iPod.
To check, highlight the tracks on one of the offending artists CDs in iTunes, right click and select "get info". This brings up a multiple song info window, and from there you can check if you have 'yes' in the box marked "part of a compilation".
If you have, select 'no' instead and click 'ok'. Do this with any CD that has this issue. This will alter the info in iTunes, and you should then connect your iPod and synchronize the changes.
The problem arises because the information contained on the Gracenote CD Data Base (where iTunes gets all it's album/artist/track info from), is sometimes incorrect. It can show CDs as compilations when in fact they are not.
You should also check that the songs have album name info in their ID tags.
See: Some songs don't show under artist on my iPod.
Once you add a second album name for that artist even for a single song, ALL the rest of the songs should now show up under that artist, even those without album names.
Providing the spelling for the artists is exactly the same of course.

  • Artists not appearing on iPod menu when the songs are definitely there?!

I have some artists on my iPod that don't appear on the main menu.
Here is an example. Big Star are on the iPod and I can find their songs through the Songs menu but they don't appear at all as an Artist. I have checked that it is spelled correctly etc.
There are other examples, I assume it is something I have done wrong with the settings.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks.

I've worked it out. Some of the albums are incorrectly listed as compilations and that edits them out of the main artist menu.
Just in case anyone else has the same problem.

  • Podcast episode does not appear in iPod app on iPhone

My podcast feed "A Thoughtful Faith" has two episodes. Both of them download without trouble on the desktop version of iTunes, but on the iPhone after episode 1 downloads it still shows that it is available and not "Downloaded," and will not show up in iPod app. My listeners are reporting a similar problem.

LInking directly to their file is obviously the sensible thing to do. It looks as if the problem lies wieth the athoughtfulfaith.org server.
There is a test suggested in this thread to check for byte-range request ability, consisting of pasting this into Terminal:
    curl -I -r 200-300 http://athoughtfulfaith.org/podcast/AThoughtfulFaith-001-GregPrince.mp3
The results, according to that thread, would seem to suggest that the server does handle them:
    HTTP/1.1 206 Partial Content
    Date: Mon, 03 Sep 2012 21:08:02 GMT
    Server: Apache
    Last-Modified: Thu, 23 Aug 2012 04:06:04 GMT

    Accept-Ranges: bytes
    Content-Length: 101
    Content-Range: bytes 200-300/46077596
    Content-Type: audio/mpeg
I don't know how reliable this test is. It may be that the problem is something different, particularly as the file appears to download complete and then disappears. I can only suggest trying hosting the file on another server, or asking the people who run your server whether they can suggest anything.
As to your other question, the PubDate for the Classic episode is indeed 2 September but the URL is definitely the mormonstories.org one. In order to look at the feed, control-click or right-click on the URL:
    http://athoughtfulfaith.org/podcast/atf-rss.xml
and choose 'Download linked file' or equivalent. Open the file in TextEdit or any text editor to read it: search for <enclosure to find the tag containing the media file URL.

  • Music not appearing in iPod, but the data is there

I have a 30G 5thGen iPod. Had it for almost a year. Updated the firmware when it came out recently (a week or two ago). It's been working okay, but just today, when I hooked it up to my iMac, message popped up at the iTunes interface asking me to name the iPod etc -- like you'd do when you first get the iPod. Now the music and videos are not showing up (I can see the photos, games, etc, but no music at all -- no artists, songs, playlists, albums. Clock is screwed up as well). I go into 'Music/Artist" etc, and there's just nothing there. But the amount of data on the iPod is unchanged. The bar that shows the % of storage (Music-Videos-Photos, etc) is just solid orange, 'Other'.
So the data is there. The music and vidoes must be there. Why aren't they showing up in the iPod's screen?
I went through the steps: tried resetting it several times. Tried a new USB port. Tried resetting the iPod with the USB power adapter. Tried restarting my iMac. I have the latest software. I guess the next step is to do a 'Restore', which I was hoping to avoid.
Can anyone shed any light on this? Is there something else I can try before I do a Restore?
    Thanks very much.

It's just that I manage the iPod content manually, so I'll have to reload the music again manually. Kind of a pain that I'd prefer to avoid unless absolutely necessary.

  • Certain artists, albums not showing on ipod but do show in Library.  Why?

My 60 gb ipod is synced with my Itunes library - which has all my cd's downloaded into it. However, even though an artist or album may show in my Itunes library, it doesn't show on my ipod.
For instance Maroon 5 Songs About Jane CD doesn't show when I search Maroon 5 in Artists or Maroon 5 in Genre but it does show when I look up the album name in Album. With nearly 1000 albums on my ipod, I'm not always able to remember an album name.
    How do I fix this?

    Compaq Presario   Windows XP

This is a very annoying problem that I have encountered myself. The only way I found to fix this is in iTunes (when the iPod is connected) to go into the iPod's music list to where the artist is and edit the artist's name (this can also be done with the track title as well). Sometimes there is an extra space at the end of the name, or even before hand. Just make sure it's the proper name/title and that there aren't any unwanted spaces added to it. Once you do this, the iPod should recognize that the song is there when it's disconnected.
    Hope this helps you.

  • Some manually artwork does not appear on ipod classic

I spent 5 hours yesterday searching for and adding cover art to my itunes albums. When I synched it to my ipod classic some of the art shows and some does not. I tried turning off the ipod and resetting it but no luck.
any ideas on how to fix this?
    g

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
*Why is artwork not showing on my iPod when it's there in iTunes?*
iTunes will display a cover in many of it's views provided at least one track from the album has embedded or downloaded artwork. The iPod appears to load only the artwork from the first track to create the cover flow and album views which means that it can sometimes fail to display art for albums even when you can see the art in iTunes. Further, when tracks are played on the iPod, artwork is displayed if and only if it exists for the currently playing track, so track one may show art while track two does not.
*How to find tracks without artwork*
To find all the tracks without artwork so that you can update them simply create a Smart Playlist with the rule *Has Artwork is False*. Use Google, Amazon, Discogs etc. to locate relevant images. Ideally these should be square, 320x320 pixels or above and borderless to give the best results in the various menus. I say 320x320 because I believe (from using TouchCopy) that it's the size used in the iPod cache so if you're going to crop or resize a smallish image you might as well work to that size. Otherwise 200x200 is probably a good minimum size. iTunes store art seems to be generally 600x600 which is probably a good maximum.
If you have artwork for some tracks of an album, but not others, find the album in the main music folder, select a track with artwork, right-click (Control-Click for Macs) on the art & click copy, then select all the tracks of the album, use CTRL-I or Command-I to *Get Info* and then paste the image into the artwork box.
I've created a script for Windows users that can replicate art from any track found to have art into any other tracks from the same album (stored in the same folder) which you can find at http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/scripts.asp
    *Rebuild artwork cache*
Sometimes the artwork cache becomes corrupt and fails to show correct artwork, even when this is properly set up in iTunes. To rebuild the artwork cache *(Pre iTunes 9 only)*, connect your iPod to iTunes. Locate the iPod in the Sources pane on the left-hand side, then select the Music tab. Remove the tick from *Display album artwork on your iPod*, sync the iPod, reselect the option & sync again. *Post iTunes 9*, the only option is a full restore of the iPod.

  • Artist doesn't appear in iPod, but the album is there in Album list in iPod

    Very strange problem.
I added an album to my iPod & it shows up fine in iTunes. The ID3 tagging is perfect.
Problem is if I scroll through the Artist list, I can't find the artist, but if I look in the Albums list, the album is there & can be played.
Wondering what the problem could be & if it can be fixed.
I also updated iTunes to the newest version, erased the album from the iPod & re-added the mp3s, but the problem still remains.
Any assistance/suggestions would be greatly welcome!

  • "VIDEO NOT APPEARING ON IPOD"  my solution

OKAY...this was the same thing that happened to me and I figured out the problem...it might be the same for you all...when you plug your iPod into the usb and the iPod Updater screen appears through your iTunes account, go to the "TV Shows" tab at the top. MAKE SURE YOU SELECT "Sync ALL videos." It turns out that the videos that weren't appearing on my iPod were the ones that had been watched at least once. I had the "Sync ALL UNWATCHED" option selected, there for all of the episodes that were viewed on my computer were not synced onto my iPod. HOPE THIS HELPS!

My video appears on the list of TV shows on my ipod. But when I play it, nothing comes up. I tried synce and stuff. All that did was delete all my songs.
