Artists listed out of alphabetical

Hi,
Just got my MBP about a month ago and realized that my iTunes listing by artist is out of order (alphabetically). For example, I have artists listed in A, then it jumps to some E artists, then it goes back to B. The problem of jumping back and forth between letters persists throughout the entire alphabet from A to Z.
I know that you can just click at the top of the Artist column to sort alphabetically, and I have done so, but the problem still persists. I tried looking at all of the other headings (album artist, track number, etc.) and couldn't find a pattern to the random alphabetical order.
I've tried searching for this issue on previous threads, but didn't find any other similar circumstances. If it has, then I'm sorry but could you please send me the link. If not, then any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I have the same problem after upgrading to 10.1. It was fine in other iterations of iTunes. Itʻs not just artists, itʻs movies, tv episodes, everything. It doesn't matter what the sort is (whether itʻs fixed so it does not sort with "the", i.e. it sorts The Eagles as Eagles, The. In the end, I jump fro Ayumi Hamaski to The Eagles (sorted as Eagles, The), then it jumps again to Incubus.. all throughout my 4000+ music library!
HELP!

  • Artists sync out of order randomly

So I just got the iPhone 4 (not 4S) and i upgraded it to iOS5 and i have iTunes 10. Everything was fine, but out of nowhere sometimes when I sync new songs it pushes all of my artists down out of alphabetical order, making half of my "B" artists under "C", half of my "C" artists under "D", half of my "D" artists under "E", etc etc etc. WHY?! I've had to completely unsync my music and resync it twice now. Not very happy about that.

For the tracks that seem out of order, check the sort order or album artist in the track info. Both can change how songs get listed.

  • IPod/Music App in iOS5 not sorting artist list alphabetically

    Hello.
I've got what it seems to be an annoying bug from the new Music App/iPod in iOS5. It simply sorts my artists out of alphabetical order on the artist dashboard. I tried to use the option "group by album artist" on and off and it seems to have no effect on that issue.
I also found a way to fix it temporally, erasing all music data, and resyncing all the playlists/selected albums. But whenever I sync again to add a new album or playlist, it messes up with the alphabetical order again. Anyone with the same problem? Is there a bug fix, workaround?
I got some Screenshots of the problem taking place, attached below.

I have the same problem, I called apple about it. they recommended that I killed the music on the device and then remove the .itl file. after completing those steps to no avail decided to remove the music from the device and then reinstall itunes as this was the next step according to the apple technician. nada. I was replacing my laptop that I sync with anyway so I moved the music to my new pc and re-added all music to itunes. before syncing I /completly/ wiped my device! synced for the first time everything went well. added additional music and viola *Problem Happen*! I know this isnt really that big of an issue but c'mon I thought that updating to 5.01 last night would help but no joy there either! hopfully some of you have better luck than I did, I will be calling apple today I guess. BTW, does anyone know where the indexing for the artist lists happen? is it in itunes or on the device itself. that may help in determining where the problem is actually created.

  • Ipod alphabetical arrangement of artist list

    Hello,
I'm more of a obsessive compulsive when it comes to arrangements of track list (or artist list) naming.
I had the previous Itunes version on one computer and on the other computer, a newer version.
When i switched to different versions and ejecting my Ipod i always have problems with the outcome of the arrangement of artist when i go to Music > Artist...
I like the older Itunes version (i forgot what exact version it is) because it arranges artists names in this manner:
    e.g.
    *3 Doors Down*
    *Alice in Chains*
    *Backstreet Boys*
and the arrangement for artists with "The", in this manner:
    e.g.
    *Sonic Youth*
    *The Strokes*
    *System of A Down*
so basically the previous version disregards the word "The" and alphabetizes the succeeding word automatically, which i think is the formal way of arranging words or sentences or titles.
The newer version of Itunes just disregards the things i mentioned above and focuses on the first letter itself, so the word "The" belongs to the "T" list automatically and the numeric symbols comes at the latter part after "Z"
Call me OC but i really hate that and i want things to be smooth and organized as it possibly can.
So I've been looking for the past versions of Itunes and i just can't find it and i'm stuck with the new version.
Is there any way that i can manage to arrange the list manually?
    Thanks a lot!

You could try using the Sorting feature in Get Info to get the tracks to sort the way you want them.

  • IPod Artist list has gone strange

Sorry. I didnt really know how to title this thread but i wonder if someone can help me. My artist list on my iphone has gone really strange and i am unsure what has happenend or how to sort it.
Basically when i press the artist list on my ipod everything is in some random order and the A-Z selection that is usually on the right hand side has dissapeared. Its now really hard to find artists especially when i have a couple of hundred on there and they are no longer in alphabetical order like they were before. It was fine yesterday and i dont think i have done anything to it since then. i did plug my phone into my computer to charge it but that was all. its also the same when i tip it on its side and look at the cover view but its in a different order and seems to just repeat the same 20 albums over and over again.
When i click on album or song view these are not in alphabetical order either. just in a random mess.
Has any one experienced this or know how to fix it. i have looked everywhere but cant find anything.
I could also add a pic if any one knows how to include them on here.
    thanks

    Update:
Doing some unrelated things in iTunes, I noticed that the actual files may have something to do with it. Looking at the folders I noticed this....
A Green Day Video is in this folder G_r_e_e_n D_ay.
I checked the dates for all videos that are like that.
    November 19
Wonder if there was an ipod/itunes update around then.
Anyway, I took the video out and renamed it (and updated the info with LOSTIFY) and imported the file back into itunes. It did seem to go back to the correct folder.
    Seems to work fine.
I no longer see the second "blank" artist that contains green day.
I did look at my library (in finder) and did NOT notice a similar problem with podcasts. I think some of this is because the Podcasts do not have the artist field filled out. But that doesn't explain the 5-6 duplicates in the Artists (ipod) menu. From a few random clicks between podcast blanks I see that the lists look alike.

  • Certain Artists Do Not Show Up On Artist List

I recently purchased a new iPod Classic and everything is lovely, but a few artists just aren't showing up on my artists list. The files are there - I can access the music in question through the album search feature - but the name does not show up. Out of my 50 gigs of music, there are only a handful of artists that I am having this problem with. I've tried reentering the names for each of the albums, but to know avail. Do you know why some artists/discs just aren't showing up on my main organizational menu? Thanks so much for the help.

    rockmyplimsoul wrote:
Alternatively, just turn off the Compilation feature on the iPod -- go to +Settings / Main Menu+ and uncheck Compilation, and +Settings / Music Menu+ and uncheck Compilation.
I'm not sure that will do the trick. Artists not showing up on the Artist menu is usually because the album is marked a "Part of a Compilation" - as you say.
This is why, look what happens in this case; I have only two songs by the artist Oasis, one on the album *Acoustic 3* and the other on *Top of the Pops 2* . Both of these albums are true compilation albums, that is - they have songs by various artists on the one album and therefore the *album artist* is _various artists_ and it's marked as a compilation. As a result, the artist Oasis does not appear in my artist list. However, if I were to add an album where the only artist is Oasis, the *album artist* would be Oasis and therefore Oasis would appear in the artist list _and in that list_ would be all three albums! (The comp albums would only show the Oasis track of course.)
But there could be another reason! iTunes uses Gracenote to provide information about an album. If whoever created the Gracenote entry has listed an album as a compilation album (the compilation box is marked yes) because it is a _compilation of tracks by one artist but from different albums_ , guess what? It's a compilation! The album *The Whole Story* by Kate Bush is such an album. If that was the only album of hers that I had, she would not be on the artist list, but if I had her *Hounds of Love* album, she would be on the artist list and The Whole Story would show up!
I know - it drives you crazy!
The solutions: if a complete "one artist" album - The Whole Story for instance - is missing, go to *Get Info* for the whole album and mark the "Part of a Compilation" box as No . If you are about to import a new album, make sure the "Part of a Compilation" is off before importing it into iTunes. For a true compilation album (various artists) - that's a bit more difficult. Either accept it or, do you have one track (even the same one) from another album, or a CD single or single song that you can import to iTunes and mark as *not part of a compilation* ? If so, import it in order to create an entry for that artist.
By the way, while we are discussing all this - Greatest Hits albums. If you have albums by different artists but with the same album name, Greatest Hits for instance, add the artist name to the album title (Greatest Hits, Santana) so that your iPod can differentiate between their album and Greatest Hits, Alice Cooper. If you don't do this, when you look at Albums /album title you will see tracks from both albums together on one album.

  • HT1660 My itunes library has automatically started to list my songs alphabetically.  I do not want this.  How do I change it so that when albums come up, the songs are listed in the order of the imported album, NOT alphabetically.

For the missing Artists on your iPod, make sure their tracks in iTunes are not marked as "Part of a compilation" in iTunes. You can do this by highlighting the track, right->clicking on them and choosing "Get Info" from the shortcut menu. When the window pops up, head over to the Info tab and make sure there is NO tick mark next to this option in the lower right hand corner. Lastly, sync the updated changes to your iPod.

  • New iPod update has messed up my Artist list!!!

I would greatly appreciate if anyone could help me out, as this problem is causing a great deal of annoyance & frustration. My iPod recently that there was a new update to download, which I did. However, once I did this, this has greatly messed up my Artist listings. For example, I had the Ozzy Osbourne "Prince Of Darkness" set on my iTunes. Disc 3 of this set is Ozzy with other artists, so the Artist name on these songs are written as Ozzy with Primus, Ozzy with Type O Negative, etc. I have it written as Artist Sort Name: Ozzy Osbourne and not listed as a compilation, so that it still lists under the name of Ozzy Osbourne in Artist List. Before the update download, everything was nicely organized under this one name. Now however, every different name (ie. ...with Primus, ...with Type O Negative) is now listed in Artists under Ozzy Osbourne. This is only one of many examples were this has occured, so as can be imagined, my Artist List is now greatly disorganized. It is very frustrating, especially since I have been spending a lot of time trying to organize my iPod. Can you please tell me how I can get things straight again. Thanks,
    -Colin

  • Song List Out of Whack

I know there are several posts here that express the same issue, but I cannot find any definitive resolution, so I will ask the question again.
iPhone 3Gs, iOS 4.2.1, in the iPod application, the list of songs and artists does not line up correctly with the index letters.. i.e. all my songs that start with a number (2112 - Rush) are first under the "A" bar rather than last under the "#" bar. This is throwing my whole list off.
In the artist list, all artists that begin wiht "THE" are listed under the "A" bar rather than their respective alphabetical bar, as are ones that start with a number (38 Special for example).
I have reset the phone to no avail. Has anyone been able to rectify this??
    Thanks.

The albums are alphabetical, but the songs aren't. Otherwise the list would be completely screwed up.
Song 4 is titled "The Bleeding," while song 9 is "Death Before Dishonor." Song 1 on the album is "Ashes." So it's not a case of alphabetizing.
I had purchased the singles for The Bleeding and Detha/Dishonor before buying the full album, but I had iTunes delete the duplicate songs when I added the full album to my library.

  • Several artists are not showing in the artist list on the Ipod.

Ok. As the title implies on my Ipod there are several artists that are not showing in the artist list. However, in Itunes an artist is clearly defined. I even changed the artist name and still had no outcome. The album is there....but I have to sort through the artist list in order to listen to the music. Can someone help me figure this one out?

The "missing" artists probably have their albums tagged as "Part of a Compilation" and you have the Compilation setting turned ON on your iPod. Either turn Compilations off (go to +Settings/Main Menu+ and +Settings/Music Menu+ and disable Compilation on both menus), or edit the tags to remove the Compilation option. Compilations are intended to be used for multi-artist albums, but often you'll get an album from a single artist tagged as a Compilation since the Gracenote database has an error in it.

  • 7.3 - Artists now out of order

Well the update thing popped up and asked me to update to iTunes 7.3 a little while ago and I did. The problem is, now some of the artists are out of order. I listen to two bands with odd names I guess, !!! and +/-. Prior to the update, these artists were listed perfectly fine right above my first "A" bands. Now they're not just at the bottom, they're all out of order too. Their albums aren't even grouped together or anything and they're mixed in with my Unknown Artist songs. It seems like anything that starts with a number or weird character is now acting really strangely and won't go where it's supposed to. Any ideas?

OOPS sorry now I see that alpha list was the way it read into the readers.
Clicking on numerica does get them in 'play' order and it is ok.
Why isn't is read in in play order?.. oh well that is not a biggy at least it will sound right.
Don't know how to delete..so will mark solved..if I can.

  • ITunes Sync-- Music-- Artists List AFU

I have edited the artist names a few times and the artist listing under the sync music tab still has all the old name listed.
As an example: "Alan Jackson" was edited to "Jackson, Alan"
How do I clear out the old data?

    Hello Kim
You should be able to move your mouse in that section and then scroll up and down to see what you want to select to move over. Alternatively you can look at your main iTunes library and then drag and drop the music that you want to your iPhone.

  • Itunes artist list display - compilations

    Hi there,
Wondering if anyone can help me...
When I view itunes as a list - under the artist list, it starts with 'All', then 'compilations', then starts the alphabetized list of artists......I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how i can move artists listed under 'compilations' and simply have their artist names listed with all the other artists (under 'All')? (This occurs with past and present versions of itunes).
I've got hundreds of artists listed and lose track of what's under 'compilations'.
Thank you in advance for your time and insight.

  • Duplicate names in artist list?

Several of my artists are showing up multiple times in the artist list of my Nano. For instance the group "Rise Against" appears six times total. Each of the individual Rise Against artists have all the same albums and all of the same songs. I have tried unloading and reloading my play lists but the problem still ensues. Does anyone out there now how to correct this problem?

  • Song not showing up under Artist listing

Let's take for example a song entitled "Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out of my Head".
The song is in my iTunes. File name is all correct, all that jazz. When I go under "Artists" to "Kylie Minogue", the song doesn't show up there.
But if I go under the setting of "Songs", "Can't Get You Out of my Head" is listed there. I click on play, it works just fine, has the artist listed as "Kylie Minogue", but still not listed when I go to "Artists".
Anyone have any idea what this is all about?? Thanks!

Make sure it has an album name.
    Also, look in Compilations.
