Artists 'missing' on iPod

Hello, I have an iPod nano (hurrah). Whilst my iPod has all the songs from my library, when I do a search for artist, a shedload are missing from the list (although, as mentioned, the songs are there).
I assumed then that there would be some criteria such as an artist only appears on the list on iPod if they had (e.g) lots of songs, but this isn't the case.
Can anyone help?

This isn't foolproof but there are usually two things that contribute to songs not appearing under Artist on the iPod, both due to information either in or missing from the Get Info>Info tab against the song in iTunes. 1) the song is marked as part of a compilation or 2) it is missing an album name.
If the tracks are ticked in the Get Info>Info tab as part of a compilation, they will not appear under Artist on the iPod. Highlight a song in iTunes that you know is not appearing correctly on your iPod. Right click on it and choose Get Info and click the Info tab (alternatively choose Get Info from the File menu), if "Part of a Compilation" is marked untick it and afterwards update your iPod, you should find it now appears as normal. Compilations are stored in a separate folder in iTunes so the songs don't appear inside the normal Artist>Album folder which may be why this happens.
Also if tracks are missing an Album name in the Info tab, this information needs to be filled in. The no album one is a bit quirky as the songs will appear under certain circumstances but the simplest remedy is just add None or Miscellaneous in place of a title. • Artists missing from Ipod

Artists that are in my computer Itunes library are missing on my Ipod after synching. Songs are all there under the Ipod Songs tab listing the Artist but under the Artists tab the Artist is gone.

There are usually two things that contribute to songs not appearing under Artist on the iPod, both due to information either in or missing from the Get Info>Info tab against the song in iTunes. 1) the song is incorrectly marked as part of a compilation (and you have Compilations enabled on the iPod) or 2) the song has no album name associated with it.

If you are using iTunes 8 and view the multiple items info box the compilations setting is in the "Options" tab. Setting "Compilations" on your iPod main menu prevents you getting lots of single artist entries when you load an album by various artists.
Also if the tracks are missing an Album name in the Info tab, this information needs to be filled in. The no album one is a bit quirky as the songs will appear under certain circumstances (for instance I read somewhere that if you have at least two tracks with different album names the rest will appear), however the simplest remedy is just add None or Miscellaneous to all the blanks in place of a title. We'll assume for now, that all the songs and albums in your iTunes Library are correctly labelled (dangerous assumption, by the way!), and that a Compilation album is one with songs by different artists. Unfortunately, the music industry (bless their little cotton socks!) often mark an album by one artist, that has a collection of their songs from old albums, as a compilation! iTunes doesn't think it is!
The missing artists will be those who only appear on Compilation albums. For example, if you have one song by Fleetwood Mac in your Library, and it's on a multi-artist Compilation album, then Fleetwood Mac will not be listed in the Artists menu. But, if you then import a Fleetwood Mac album (or even a Fleetwood Mac single) into your Library, then not only will Fleetwood Mac appear under Artists, but the song by them in the Compilation album will also be listed.
One way to sort this out is to remove the Compilations option from the Main Menu and the Music Menu on your iPod. To do this, go to Settings/Main Menu/Compilations and press the Select (centre) button to turn off the tick. Then repeat this in the Settings/Music Menu/Compilations.
You should now find the missing artists listed in the Artists menu.
By the way, I now routinely check all albums I import from CD into my iTunes Library. Before I start the import procedure, I make sure that Compilation CD is turned on (highlight the album in the import window and right-click/Compilation CD) if it really is a multi-artist CD - and off if it's a single artist CD. Once imported, I manually change the album info to; (highlight album and select ) File/Get Info/Info/Album Artist has "Various Artists" in the box. Make sure it's the Album Artist box, not the Artist box.

  • Missing Artist names in iPod under lookup but the song is there

I have all the approx 7,000 tunes on my LapTop that sync's into my iPod OK but there are some missing "Artist" names in my iPod when I lookup by Artist but the song is there in song lookup and it has the Artist name it the display.
Some answers to some questions, my helper's maybe asking themselves are............
I've loaded the songs into iTunes from the web as well as via CD's online with "Grace Notes" inputting song info also with me off line loading in songs from my internal and external hard drive. I have converted all songs that weren't under the option (create an ACC Version). My understanding this is this to create a .mp3 file within the iTunes Music Library Folder. I would then delete the originally song
Any help or questions for me so far?
    Befuddled......

It could be that you have inadvertently imported these CDs into iTunes as part of a compilation. If so, the artists won't show in the artists menu on the iPod.
To check, highlight the tracks on one of the offending artists CDs in iTunes, right click and select "get info". This brings up a song info window, and by selecting "options" you can check if you have 'yes' in the box marked "part of a compilation".
If you have, select 'no' instead and click 'ok'. Do this with any CD that has this issue. This will alter the info in iTunes, and you should then connect your iPod and synchronize the changes.
The problem arises because the information contained on the Gracenote CD Data Base (where iTunes gets all it's album/artist/track info from), is sometimes incorrect. It can show CDs as compilations when in fact they are not.
You should also check that the songs have album name info in their ID tags.
See: Some songs don't show under artist on my iPod.
Once you add a second album name for that artist even for a single song, ALL the rest of the songs should now show up under that artist, even those without album names.

  • Can't find artist in "artist" category on ipod but the music can be found in "Album" category.

I bought a "Cars" album on itunes 2 months ago and have been trying to sync it to my ipod ever since. It looks as if the sync was successful but when I disconnect the ipod and look for the music under "artist" it isn't there. I have deleted it from the ipod several times and re-synced my entire music library but even though it appeared to be in my ipod music library while still connected to my computer once ejected the music appeared not to be there. Even did a search for "The Cars" on the ipod and no results found.
Then, today, I decided to do a search for one of the songs on the album in my ipod and there it was! I searched for a few more songs and there they were. So I looked in the "all albums" category in the ipod and the album was there. It even says "The Cars" as the artist but if I look under "artist", "The Cars" isn't anywhere to be found. I have tediously looked through the entire "artist" library and "Cars" or "The Cars" is not there. Not under "C" or "T" or anywhere else.
I have never encountered this problem in all of the years that I have owned an iPod and I have owned quite a few. I don't know how to fix this. It is properly catologued in my iTunes library and when the ipod is connected to the computer it is in the "C's" as "The Cars".
Any idea how to fix this?

For the missing Artists on your iPod, make sure their tracks in iTunes are not marked as "Part of a compilation" in iTunes. You can do this by highlighting the track, right->clicking on them and choosing "Get Info" from the shortcut menu. When the window pops up, head over to the Info tab and make sure there is NO tick mark next to this option in the lower right hand corner. Lastly, sync the updated changes to your iPod if necessary.

It's not clear from your post, but you do realise
that if you import a cd as a compilation, it will not
appear under artists? This is done to save the iPod
being cluttered up with single artists entries who
might have only one song listed.
I wasn't aware of that. It's true that I haven't been using the "compilation" tag for a long time. I've only started using it with iTunes 7 as otherwise with Coverflow I would have one album cover for each artist in a compilation. Before that my compilations weren't tagged as such as that is quite probably why each artist from compilations showed up when browsing by artists.

  • I can't find the complete list of artists in my IPOD

Dear all, I have a 160 GB IPOD Classic and when I try to look for an specific artist, he does not appears. Nevertheless, when I search for a song of that artist, the song comes up with the right artist name. Its weird, but there are some artists that don't appear when I try the artist list.

  • Artists not under artists in my ipod

I've been having a problem with only a few artists, but it's just annoying and I want to know how to fix it. With the artists 'puff daddy and the family' 'juno' which is a soundtrack but i put it under the name instead of various artists also 'taking back sunday' and 'zz top' they are on my ipod because I can find them under the names of their albums, but when I look under artists they aren't listed. Is this a technical problem with the ipod classic because I just had to exchange one because it had this problem and more. It's not a problem with my ipod nano though.

  • Artist Sorting Issues or displaying artist name on iPod.

    Hello,
I have been struggling with this for a while now and it's really becoming irksome.
I have to have a compliation CD displayed as Various Artists when searching through my iPod on Artist browse mode, yet once the individual songs are played i want to be able to view the actual artist.
For instance i have a CD called Blues Essentials with various songs by different artists, i need these so show up under the same artist search reference as "Various Artists" however when the song is played it would be nice to see the actual recording artist, i have tried a combination of various renaming and nothing seems to work

Whatever is entered in the "Artist" field in iTunes will be displayed as the artist when you're navigating to the artist and when the song's actually playing.
What you're asking to do would require two different fields for two different sets of information.
One possibility is to change all the "Artists" to the actual recording artists and instead of navigating by artist on your iPod, navigate by album.

  • Artists missing from ITunes - how do you ask ITunes to provide them?

There are a LOT of artists missing from ITUNES. Some seminal albums. For example I wanted to download Ian Dury and the Blockheads (amongst many other artists) but ITUNES does not have a single track by him. Is this because ITUNES is particularly American in their outlook? or some other reason? How do you ask them to make certain artists and albums available for download?

You need to be aware that often the reason any given artist isn't represented on the iTunes Music Store is that the artist or their record company won't license Apple to resell their tracks. This often happens with a deceased artist; the rights are sown up in estates.
So by all means submit your request, but don't be surprised if nothing happens; often there's nothing Apple can do. In the case of The Blockheads, you might want to contact them directly and ask them to get their CDs onto the iTMS.

You need absolute consistency in the spellings. See Grouping tracks into albums.

  • Not seeing all artists in the artist list on ipod

    Ok, here is the problem.
I have my entire itunes library in my 160. However, when I look for certain artists on the ipod, they are not listed under the artist list. I can find the songs if I look for them under songs or albums. How do I get them to show up in artist? Thanks for any help

Once you add a second album name for that artist even for a single song, ALL the rest of the songs should now show up under that artist, even those without album names.

  • Songs missing from IPOD menus

Hi this is a bit complicated to explain so may take awhile but here goes:
Me and my Boyfrind both share the same computer and Itunes Libary. However one album is causing him problems. The Jimi Hendrix Voodoo child album is synced in Itunes and is on my Ipod and can be accsessed through all of the menu options Albums, artists, songs etc. However on my boyfriends the album or any of the songs cannot be found in any of these menus. The weird thing is that the album Is on his Ipod as songs from the album and diplaying the artwork and album name pop up randomly when in shuffle mode but we cannot not find it in any of the menus so that he can acsess it manually??? We would be gratful for any help anyone could give us in solving this problem.
    30gb vidio Ipod   Windows XP

This is a little confusing. You say your b/f iPod cannot access that album via any of these menus, "Albums, artists, songs etc."
Then you go on to say "The weird thing is that the album Is on his Ipod as songs".
So where are you accessing these songs if not from the artist/album/songs menu?
The best place to start is with this.
It could be that you have inadvertently imported this CD into iTunes as part of a compilation (I believe that JH album is a compilation right?). If so, the artists won't show in the artists menu on the iPod.
To check, highlight the tracks on one of the offending artists CDs in iTunes, right click and select "get info". This brings up a multiple song info window, and from there you can check if you have 'yes' in the box marked "part of a compilation".
It can show CDs as compilations when in fact they are not, although in this case I think it is a copmilation and the CDDB is correct.
You should also check that the songs have album name info in their ID tags.
See: Some songs don't don't show under artist on my iPod.
Also, I would check to see if your b/f ipod has the "compilations" menu turned on. Settings/main menu/compilations/on. This way you can keep that album marked as a comp if you so wish.
If I've misunderstood and it's none of these things, post back.
