Artwork files (PDF) - colour replacement

artwork files (PDF) sent from pc or housed on server - when viewed on mac - certain colours replaced with black - primarily RED and Yellow - why would this happen?

Best, perhaps, to ask in the Adobe Acrobat Users Forum. What are you using to view the files? Preview, Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader? I've never seen what you describe, but someone had to create the pdf file somehow and I would guess that they are using Acrobat.

  • Can't seem to add artwork to pdf files

In the "Books" tab, I can add artwork to epub books, but I can't seem to add artwork to pdf files. Is this a normal thing? Or is there something I'm doing wrong?
Also, do you know what I should be setting my page widths to if I want the pdf files I create to display nicely in Portrait mode on an iPhone? The ones I made seem to only look nice in Landscape mode.

Devin,  If they end in .ogg, they are OGG Vorbis files.  This is a well-known open-source music format, but iTunes is unable to play it.
Also, as you have just learned, when iTunes encounters a file that is not copmatible, it "errors silently," i.e. gives no indication of what they problem is.
To resolve it, use a 3rd party conversion program such as Switch to convert the OGG files into MP3, and then they will add to iTunes.

  • Original .pdfs colours different (darker) in printed magazine - WHY?

I am running InDesign on a PC (Windows XP). I use it to edit and design a full colour short run magazine which is professionally printed. My problem is that the colours of the final printers proofs and finished magazine are coming through darker in tone, particularly the reds and blues, than the .pdfs I generate using InDesign. On my screen and on the HP printer I use to run off test pages, the .pdfs colours are fine. Somehow the printers' equipment and/or software is making them darker on the final printed magazine, unacceptably so this time.
We generate the magazine using InDesign and send the final .pdfs to the printers via an ftp server service (YouSendIt).  The printers then create the final proofs for me to approve and sign off. Sometimes they send me these in the post as printed sheets (sherpas) to sign off. Recently I have been going online to their "Delano" server and approve the proofs on line. Last time round however they had a problem with it and sent me the printed proofs to sign off.
Most of the images we used originate as digital ones and are supplied to us as high res. Occasionally there is a scan. However as the printer uses cmyk images, and insists we convert any rgb images to cmyk before they will process our .pdfs. We do the picture conversion from rgb to cmyk using Photo-paint.
In the past I have had problems with the colour balance of the final proofs being darker than my original .pdfs.  Changing colour balance at the pre-press stage is expensive and as it is just about acceptable if the final magazine does not contain too many photos with a lot of grass and sky, then I will let it run.
But it has happened again and is unacceptable. I was sent a very good quality professional photo for the cover (in high res digital format) taken outdoors on a sunny day with a lot of grass and it has inevitably printed too dark on the final cover. (sky is greyish not blue and  grass is orange-ish not light green). Same problem throughout.
The printed proofs supplied by the printers this time were too dark, so I phoned up the Production Manager to tell him this before I signed them off. He said not to worry as they were not 100% accurate for colour anyway. To be on the safe side, I marked on all the proofs individually that the colour was too dark, and printed out and sent them a .pdf of the cover, showing the correct colour balance.
Still the printed magazine arrived too dark, just as it was on their proofs. I again complained to the Production Control Manager who put me onto their Technical Support guy, who is not very helpful (always looks at it being customers fault as his first position). He said first of all that it must be my scanning, and conversion from rgb to cmyk. I pointed out the cover photo was not scanned but an original high res digital image supplied by a press agency. So he then said my PC and printer must be at fault.
I have gone back and looked at the colours on previous issues and they are all on the dark side, for example bright blue skies come out greyish, but it only really notices if there is a lot of grass and sky in the pictures. Is the printers software or equipment attempting to compensate for needing extra colour in some way? Also they are primarily a MAC house and I use a PC. Could this affect the colour calibrations?
I need to talk to them again but want to do so from a position of knowing something about how a .pdf gets converted into a final proof and how the colours could get darker, given their tech support is unhelpful.
If it is relevant, this is their printing equipment: Twin Computer-to-Plate lines; Two Heidelberg 8 colour presses .
Any advice anyone can give on what might be causing the final magazine to be darker in tone than my InDesign .pdfs would be appreciated.

Wow – thanks for all your suggestions I am going to have to take a while to digest and try them out and report back.
I am in fact on very good terms with the Production Manager at the printers but I think he has rather been dropped in it, as it seems the unhelpful tech support guy has just left and not been replaced so the Production Control Manager is left trying to sort out advanced technical aspects of prepress for which he has not been trained.
I have to ask why the printers don't give you the information you need up front instead of claiming a .pdf from Indesign is all it takes.
In all this .pdf fine tuning stuff I am reminded of my earlier career in IT. I was involved in setting up an early wide area VOIP network (Voice over Internet Protocol  - a sort of Skype to the uninitiated). To make this work we needed a digital switchboard which was configured to the latest European standard and software to match. Everyone assured me that the protocol concerned (let us call it 802.11) was brand new and had not yet had time to develop any variations……of course there were all sorts of problems not least that the line kept dropping and everytime it restarted we got charged a reconnection charge. I won’t bore you with how we got there in the end but needless to say, one man’s VOIP implementation of VOIP using 802.11 is not necessarily another’s.
I am reminded of this in all the issues surrounding exporting .pdfs to get the correct colour balance in the resulting publication. I swear to you this was never mentioned to me as being an issue at any time by anyone when we started down this route.
Meanwhile today I asked the printers’ salesman chasing my business to send their technical spec – pointing out I work on a PC running XP - and this is what I got
A sheet headed “Recommended settings for creating a PDF/X directly from Adobe InDesign CS3. This example was created on Mac OS x 10.5 using InDesign 5.0.1”  This is followed by a series of screen prints with the following headings
Check your Transparency Flattener Preset is correctly configured (via the edit menu) this will be selected in the Advanced tab (step 6)
Select File – Export then in Format chose Adobe PDF and name the file, select folder to save it to and click Save
In General select single page to print set compatibility to Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3) and deselect all the list Options and include checkboxes
The Compression tab sets the options for how the PDF will handle resolutions for placed colour, grey scale and monochrome images
The Printers marks should be enabled as below.
Use the Destination and Output Intent profile name relevant to the publication. ISO Coated V2 300 is used here as an example only.
Ensure there are only process colour and no Spot colours. Converting colour to CMYK at the PDF creation stage can give unpredictable results
Select the transparency Flattener previously created. OPI should be disabled. Here is also where you can opt to create a JDF file
Make sure all the options in Security are disabled. Summary lists all the settings that can be applied it can be saved as a text file for reference
Note item 6 – it does not actually tell me what the printers recommended settings for my publication are
And Note also item 7 where it says that converting to colour to CMYK at the PDF creation stage can give unpredictable results

  • Colour replacement tool not working

I have a jpeg file loaded into Photoshop CS6. This is a black logo on a white background. The colour replacement tool has no effect on this (I want to change the black to another colour)
I have read somewhere that the tool doesnt work with black and white? is that correct and if so, how do i get the colour changed
    Thanks
    Chris Anderson

    Hi Cjacs,
You may try using blending modes to achieve your desired result. Starting with a black and white logo:
    1) Create a new fill layer by going to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color.
    2) At the first dialog box, click OK. Then choose the color you want the artwork to be.
    3) You logo artwork will then be hidden, but don't worry! We'll using blending modes to change this.
    4) In the Layers Panel, look for the area where it says "Normal." This is where you change the blend mode. Open this dropdown menu and select Screen.
    5) Your artwork will then be changed to the color you chose before.
I hope this was helpful! Please don't hesitate to ask more questions if this did not solve your issue.

  • Adding multiple artwork files to several items on iTunes 11

    Hi all.
in previous versions of itunes one could add artwork in several ways one of which allowed for easily adding several artwork files to more than one item at once without replacing the existing artwork.
I am talking about the little square that was on the left bottom corner of the screen and you could chose if you want to watch the artwork for the currently playing song or the selected song. you could paste into it or simply drag onto it. it would add the art work in appose to replace the existing one as happens when you do it from the info window.
this little square disappeared from version 11 and now I am unable to add several files to several items at once.
    anyone solved this pickle?

    treyer11 wrote:
IThe point is, I could drag and drop previously and have gone backwards in capability which is supposedly against what Apple platforms inherently stand for.
The point is it has not gone backwards in capability. It works just fine. I can drag & drop to multiple selected items just fine.
Something is wrong wtih your install.

  • OLE embedded Adobe Illustrator Artwork files not rendering properly

I'm using BroadVision's Quicksilver.  I've attempted to embed AI Artwork
files as OLE objects (linked and not linked), but they don't render within
Quicksilver.  After working with their support team, they came to the
conclusion that it was an Adobe Illustrator issue because they were
able to reproduce the issue in Wordpad (not MS Word).
The problem can be reproduced by the following steps (tested in Vista,
    XP, & Server 2008):
    :- Open Wordpad
:- Click Insert -> Object -> Create From File -> Browse -> Find and select a file -> Open
Other variations on this theme encounter the same problem, including
    pasting it from the clipboard.
If you open a Wordpad document in MS Word and embed the OLE
object, it saves a preview of the image which is visible from Wordpad
if you open it later on (as long as you don't link to the original; if you do,
and attempt to update the link, the preview image will go away).  However,
subsequent alterations of the OLE object don't show up in Wordpad -- rather,
the image that was rendered in Word continues to be displayed (unless, of
course, you open it in MS Word again and re-save after the link is updated).
It appears the support team at another company encountered a user
experiencing the same or similar issues with their product, but on
Illustrator CS2 as opposed to CS4:
    http://www.graphpad.com/faq/viewfaq.cfm?faq=1309
Unfortunately, the "export to another format" workaround won't suffice.
We're working with thousands of Illustrator artwork files that need to be
version controlled, and other technical documents will link to the same
Illustrator file.  When an AI file is updated, all technical documents
need to use the altered version; linking to an exported version of the
file just creates one more link in the chain that can create problems
    or confusion.
Even if the version control stuff wasn't an issue, exporting to other
formats seems rather limited.  If we export to other formats (eg, pdf)
the images render poorly compared to what they look like in AI.
We've tried a number of things to work around this:
    * Make sure AI [is/is not] already running
    * Rasterize paths
    * Alter the size of the image in AI
    * Alter the size of the object in the target application
    * 'Save as' with a different version of AI selected (for all versions)
    * Saving as an EPS or PDF -- the former has the same rendering issue
as AI files; the latter renders but the drawing is blocky, probably because
the graphics are being rendered at a very low resolution and scaled up
      after the fact.
    * Looking for or changing preferences in Illustrator that might affect it
    * Altering color scheme and various other similar settings
    * CS5 trial version -- same problem as CS4
    * Save the [wordpad] document -> close -> re-open
    * Switching between 'display as icon' and displaying the image
    * Copy & paste from various sources (from AI -> Wordpad,
      MS Word -> Wordpad, etc)
The only way I can get it to render in Wordpad (or quicksilver for that matter)
is if I embed the AI file in a Word/RTF document, then embed that in
the target application (which is awfully convoluted).  Furthermore, if the
embedded Word/RTF file links to the original file, when you open the
document containing the embedded Word/RTF it doesn't attempt to
update from the linked AI file, just the linked Word/RTF file.
I'm sure there's other things we've tried to resolve this, but that's what comes
    to mind right now.
If anyone can help with this, or clue me in that it's a bug in AI, I'd sincerely
    appreciate it.
    -Brian

    Well, no offense
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
None taken.  I'm helping someone else solve a technical problem, I'm just not questioning their approach; I'm not a tech writer, so I'll pass your suggestions on.
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
(...) you are trying  to solve one hell of a crooked workflow on the wrong end and the one  fatal flaw being that you insist on using an office tool to create  layouts and expecting it to render print-ready documents.  That just  cannot work. Even the most stubborn tech writers I occasionally work  with, recognize the need for eventually firing this at InDesign/ InCopy/  Framemaker and associated server versions and fuse the imported RTF/  Word documents and illustrations based on template layouts, scripting  and rule-based formatting, which can all happen automnatically on a  server with the respective software.
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
I was mistaken when I described how things are version controlled.  They would prefer to embed the AI images in each document and have each document be version controlled (that is, if the image changes it should /not/ affect other documents).
However, I wasn't mistaken when I said there are thousands of already developed AI images.  The team working with these images has already procured a volume license for Framemaker and is hesitant to purchase other software unless there's no alternative, or the time savings would justify it.  I wish I could comment on the efficacy of your suggestion, but I'm not a tech writer; I'm unfamiliar with InDesign, InCopy, and FrameMaker.
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
So for what it's worth, you are  probably wasting your time and resources on something that by its nature  starts out with a limited process. I'm not even sure if AI fully  supports OLE. I seem to remember having read about it not supporting  several features and commands....
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
If we export to other formats (eg, pdf) the images render poorly compared to what they look like in AI.
What  do you mean? If they look "bad" in Acrobat or something, then you are  simply using the wrong export settings. which is perfectly fixable.
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
In Acrobat the SV graphics look beautiful at any scale, but if the PDF is OLE embedded in another application it looks terrible.
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
If  they look "bad" within your word documents, then we pretty much return  to what I said in the first paragraph - there's a good chance it's  simply Word rendering the artwork poorly due to its limited abilities of  dealing with graphics of any kind. I would even think that manually  changing the graphics properties would improve appearance then....
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
I'm not an expert on OLE; I made the [potentially bad] assumption that Acrobat would be responsible for rendering the graphic when a PDF is OLE embedded, so the application making use of the object would have limited control over the quality of the image it receives (if my assumption were correct anyway).
I know the host process can specify whether the image is rendered as an EMF or WMF image, otherwise I know very little about the OLE API and what limitations the host process can impose.
I'll keep tinkering to see if the PDF solution can be made to work.
In the meantime, would anyone like to make a determination as to whether this is a real bug in AI or not?

    ==============================================================
Has anyone managed to do this? Help please
    Thank you
    Regards,
    Andi

response.setHeader("Content-Disposition", "inline; filename=Report.pdf");You must use "attachment" instead of "inline".
    Edit:
Just noticed that you want to show document :)
You can try to use something like this to call your servlet(and use "inline"):
    String script = "window.open('" + url + "', '_blank');
    ExtendedRenderKitService service = Service.getRenderKitService(FacesContext.getCurrentInstance(), ExtendedRenderKitService.class);
    service.addScript(FacesContext.getCurrentInstance(), script);
    {code}
But you can't control browser behaviour, so if this will open in new tab or new window depends on browser settings.
    Dario.

  • Unable to save a 'smallest size file' pdf from illustrator 5.5

We recently insalled Adobe Standard 5.5
I often save PDF files from Illustrator using the built in PDF options available from the PDF drop down menu bar when saving files. Usually I will save a visual as a 'smallest file size' or make use of the 'high quality print' option for other files etc.
Why cant I do this on CS5.5?
In addition, the colour is not acurate at all!
    Please help

Hi Scott - I found the following thread on the net. So I had a look on my time machine back-ups and copied the files from there, which I then pasted into my Settings folder as you suggested.
    Ta da!! All working again!
Any idea how I could restore these settings from a backup?
    Thanks!
The PDF presets reside in Root/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings/
After I had installed 10.6.5, 6 preset files were removed from the Settings folder. The folder tree itself remained, it was just that some of the contents of "Settings" were deleted. I have fixed the problem by copying the deleted settings files from a backup.
These are the files which were deleted:
    Smallest File Size.joboptions
    Press Quality.joboptions
    PDFX4 2008.joboptions
    PDFX3 2002.joboptions
    PDFX1 2001.joboptions
    High Quality Print.joboptions
    These files were not deleted:
    Standard.joboptions
    PDFA1b 2005 RGB.joboptions
    PDFA1b 2005 CMYK.joboptions
    Oversized Pages.joboptions
Somebody at Adobe community support for Indesign directed me to restore these files from a backup, which solved the problem.

  • Programs/files(pdf) in ipad will remain by this or deleted

My vista OS where I used to sychr ipaditunes, failed, now I must syncr again with new INSTALLED OS VISTA / ITUNES to get files to my PC from ipad? programs/files(pdf) in ipad will remain by this or deleted?

    Backups are located:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4079
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
32 or 64 bit should not mater for files, it does mater for programs, especially drivers.
The reference article says how to uses a backup of a backup. What you may have to do is to essentially erase your iPad and replace it with the iTunes content on your new computer and back that up and then replace that backup with your old backup. Make sure you disable automatic syncing since the first step is making a backup.

  • Rights management for digital artwork to PDF sent to online printers

I posted last year about this and learnt about LC management which is helpful,
    its just the cost.
I`m a designer/illustrator and looking to print my digital artworks with online giclee printers to canvas who are in the U.S and U.K but I am in Australia.
I wanted to use livecycle rights management to give them access to printing my artwork yet keep it limited in being able to pass the file around to other printers..
However the cost for a single person is prohibitive,
I`m hoping adobe can set up something for digital artists to create confidence in sending out artwork as PDF to printers, like an online subscription plan for livecycle rights management, or pay per use or annual fee, something like this where adobe manage the servers..
I am using the creative suite lease version online for monthly rental of $130 and really enjoy the system of the 12 month contract available in Australia. I`m hoping to access something like this for live cycle management that is affordable for someone looking at getting high quality printers to print their designs.
$1000 to $2000 per year as a usage fee would be something I could entertain.
Communication with the print industry would be needed prior as they may have issues with having to access online files for high end printing.

I received a response to this from acrobatusers.com
    http://www.acrobatusers.com/forums/aucbb/viewtopic.php?pid=71772#p71772
A subscription service is being developed (see http://dc.adobe.com ) but  it can't be used to secure PDFs sent for service digital printing, as  the print shop will need the ability to alter the document (for example  to impose pages into the media sizes they print to, add crop marks,  color-match plates, etc). Digital printers therefore invariably demand  that the PDFs they are sent have no security applied at all.
They  also tend to use different software (Illustrator, etc) or old versions  of Acrobat, which won't support DRM. If your PDF is completely ready to  print without changes, most printers send the file to a standalone RIP -  and they don't open secured files at all.
Trusting the printer  with your files is part of the deal when you print using a service  bureau. If you don't, don't. There's no way round it.

  • Can't burn my artwork files with my music onto CD WHY?

I am a musician, so when I want burn a disc of all my tracks from my own playlist, for my friends and family, I want to burn my original artwork files (which are all jpgs, pngs, gifs or tiffs so they should be compatible), onto the CD as well! I have already created my own original artwork which is in the playlist, but when I come to burn a copy of my music, it doesn't burn any of the artwork files that are in the playlist! I thought iTunes '09 new version, was supposed to be an improvement from the last versions for more flexibility and creative control for users. This obviously is NOT the case. I would like any correspondence from Apple or technical help as to why I can't do this because it's so frustrating and very annoying. iTunes isn't all that, that Apple claims it to be if it is this inflexible creatively! Surely, it can't be that difficult to write in the software for this creative facility that allows us to burn our own artwork files on to CD's along with our music? I would appreciate any comments you may have regarding this design fault. Anyone with any reasons as to why Apple have NOT addressed this problem? I am so disappointed with this lack of flexibility for musicians alike.

Hi to everyone that replied and many thanks for your input.
I have bought well known and established artists CD's containing their music, track lists and artwork files from branded retailers. When I have loaded them into iTunes, it automatically loaded the artwork files FROM the CD I bought, so all that nonsense about audio CD's having nothing but audio isn't accurate. No, they were not DVD's either. I will endeavor to find a software package that CAN do what I need as an independent artist. iTunes just doesn't cut the mustard for me, even though it's free. I do know about issues with copyright and artists protection, but there should be something that can be done or made in iTunes, so it doesn't infringe copyright of artists, but can be used by artists like myself without the software being abused by freeloaders. Oh well, maybe when I'm too old for this malarkey...

Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store

  • Report: generate to file pdf format

    Hi folks,
I have made a report which displays all data on preview and on printer. But when I use generate to file PDF option it misses data from columns at right hand side. The report has more than 15 columns and uses smaller font size.
Kindly somebody help me in this regards.
    Tahir Abbas

Do the column headings display ok but the data does not?
If so it may be related to the font size. i.e. the whole report may not fit on the page when scaled for pdf output.

  • Bug in Multi-File Search and Replace in RH6?

I'm using the 6.0 trial, and one thing I want to be able to
do is to replace the variables I put in using JavaScript with the
new feature variables in 6.0. So, I went in to multi-file search
    and replace, and searched for:
    <script
    language=JavaScript>document.write(varProduct)</script>
I copied this code directly from a topic, and pasted it into
    the Search tool.
I don't even care whether I can successfully copy the code
from my new variable for use as the replacement text; I'd be happy
if the multi-file search would simply find all occurrences of my
original code so I don't miss any during conversion to 6.0.
It keeps coming up as not found, and this concerns me
greatly. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a known bug? Does
    anyone have a workaround?
    Thanks!

    Hi robowriter
I'm assuming you are using the wondrous little applet known
    as Multi-File Find and Replace.
Unfortunately, this little beastie is like a cat. It
frequently has a fussy tummy and loves to hork up furballs. Well,
not exactly. Really what it does is fail to properly handle
anything with a line break. So you need a tool that does do this.
Fortunately, one exists! It is called FAR (Find And Replace). Oddly
enough, it was also written by a fellow Microsoft Help MVP named
Rob Chandler. (Rob lives in Australia)
You can download a trial version of FAR from the FAR page.
    the FAR page
    Cheers... Rick

  • How do you drag pages from one PDF to replace pages in another?

In Acrobat Pro CS2 for Macintosh you could drag one or more pages from one PDF, and choose whether to insert them into another PDF, or replace pages in the other PDF.
To insert them you dropped the dragged pages between two pages in the Pages panel.
To replace pages in the other PDF you dropped the dragged pages onto a page in the Pages panel.
I recently upgraded to Acrobat CS5, and this no longer seems to work. All you can do is insert.
Of course I can then delete the pages I wanted to replace, but it's now much less convenient, and there's more opportunity for error.
Am I missing something, or has this feature really been removed between CS2 and CS5?

You still can but you have to press command + option when you cursor is hovering over the page you want to replace. A blue border will appear around the page.
So select the new page you are bringing in, drag it over to your main document, keeping the mouse pressed down. Hover over the page you want to replace and press command + option. A blue box will appear around the page. Let go of the mouse and you will get your confirmation message. Press OK, and you are good to go.
