"Artwork Not Modifiable"?  What and why?

This is horrible.  It makes me not want to upgrade any new Apple software to newer versions -- they just add restrictions.  This one is nowhere mentioned in the iTunes "Help" feature.

I just noticed this problem one of my albums. It was interesting because only three of 20 songs were affected and nothing about them seemed different from those that had artwork (same format, ripped from the same CD at the same time). The artwork preview window in the lower left corner had the "Artwork Not Modifiable" message you described, and when looking at the song's info the Artwork tab was greyed out.
The workaround I found was this: First copy the artwork you desire to your clipboard, using Command+C. Then select multiple songs, at least one of which had unmodifiable artwork and at least one that had the appropriate artwork. I clicked Command+I (Get Info), which when multiple items are selected gives you a place to put artwork in the Info tab. I selected the artwork area and clicked Command+V to paste the artwork, then clicked OK. Seems to have worked each time so far.
Good luck!

Words simply can't describe what a kludge iTunes has become.  Every time Apple fixes one problem, a dozen more pop up.  It's like trying to hold a bunch of ping-pong balls under water simultaneously.
The immediate problem is that Lion with iTunes buggers the artwork.  Some it loses, some it can't find, and some appears and disappears like the Flying Dutchman (look it up...).
The bigger issue is that so MUCH of iTunes is bad, in general.  Apple trys to use iTunes as a Swiss Army knife, using it to synch iPhones, iPads, etc.  The app has become so generic that it is actually good at nothing.
The interfrace is kludgy; moving the library from one location to another virtually guarantees a wasted day and usually lost art, music, or backups.
In general, Apple's hardware and software is relatively ergonomically designed.  I-Tunes, however just plain SUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS!

  • Album Artwork not modifiable - why?

I'm having problems with my Podcast (channel) album art. It's a 300 x 300 jpeg, 72 dpi, but iTunes is telling me that its not modifiable. I've tried different file names - still doesn't work. Is there a colour depth limit? If so what is it? And is there a nice easy way to convert it using PSP7?

The option is not available; it says the Album Artwork Not Modifiable. Why not?!
The files are read-only or non-writable for some reason. Album Artwork is added to the files themselves, and if they're read only, iTunes can't add the artwork.
The reason it works after you convert the file is because the new copy of the file is not marked read-only.

  • Why is "Album Artwork Not Modifiable" ?

I've seen this problem with certain MP3 files. However, this is now happening with some other songs that are AAC format. Can someone help me?
    Thanks!

  • Artwork not modifiable, how to change this?

I just downloaded a free song off of a website using Firefox. I chose "open with iTunes". The song went straight o my iTunes and is playing fine.
Only problem is that there is no artwork. It says 'artwork not modifiable'.
**When I right click and choose "get info" everything is "locked" or something and I'm not allowed to edit anything.
The file is a "MPEG audio file".
What's the problem and how do I fix it?

    Hey there,
Locate the file in explorer. When you find it, right->click the file name and choose Properties from the Menu. Make sure that +Read Only+ is not check at the bottom of the window that pops up. See if that helps.

  • Album artwork not modifiable problems

I can get album art from lots of places, the problem is I tunes will not let me put in. keeps coming up with album artwork not modifiable I'm not trying to modify anything. I just want to put some album art in. Is there a way around this ?? I tunes is pretty good most of the time, but sometimes it makes a person want to just go sit in a corner and eat dirt..........

Ah, okay. Well, if you are trying to get artwork by using that handy "Get Album Artwork" feature of iTunes, it is likely that you aren't going to get some art because the iTunes database doesn't have every album under the sun.
So here is what you do: 1) Run a Google image search, or something similar, and find the artwork online. (If you own the album physically, you can always scan the artwork into your computer yourself if you have a scanner.)
    2) Save the artwork to your hard drive (make sure it's a jpg or other common format).
    3) Open iTunes, and select all the songs in an album that you wish to add the artwork to (should be highlighted in blue), right- or ctrl-click on the selection, and select "Get Info." You will probably get a "Do you want to do this?" window, so hit "okay."
    4) You should see a section in the lower-right corner of the new window that says "Album Art" or similar. Double-click on that empty space, and navigate to the file you just saved on your hard drive.
    5) Select the art, hit all of the okay buttons you need to, and let iTunes process it.
    Voilà, you have album art.

  • "album artwork not modifiable"

after upgrading to version 7 it seems that the albums in my library have randomly been designated as "album artwork not modifiable" , making it impossible for me to even manually add the artwork.
    any help appreciated.

For some reason, iTunes 7.0 is converting songs to QuickTime Movie files when it imports music into your song library. I'm not sure how to fix THAT, as it may be a bug with iTunes itself.
Instead of reverting to 6, try converting the file to something other than a QuickTime file (control + click or right-click and select "convert selection to xxx"). Once the file is converted to a format other than a QT movie, you should be able to save album artwork on that new file. Just delete the original (apple + i for the information screen to confirm that you are deleting the right file).
I just tried it myself, and it looks like this should work until Apple fixes iTunes 7. I've never seen iTunes import files as a QuickTime movie. I assume this is only a problem for MP3 files, because I tried importing an AAC file and it worked just fine.
    Hope this helps!

  • Updating Album Art, when iTunes says "Album Artwork Not Modifiable"

How can I go about updating or adding album art when the Artwork area at the lower left corner of iTunes says, "Album Artwork Not Modifiable"? Every effort to add the artwork from iTunes has failed. When I paste the album photo from another site, it doesn't save.

I figured this out. I found that the folder and files only had "read" privileges and not "read & write" privileges. I did the following:
    1. In finder I right clicked the parent folder for iTunes and selected "Get Info".
    2. Selected my user and changed the rights to "read & write".
    3. This step is the most important. With my user still selected in blue, you click on the options "cog wheel" below the users, at the bottom. Select, "Apply to the enclosed items". It may ask you again if you are sure, say "yes". By doing this you will apply your users "read & write" privileges to all folders and files underneath your iTunes folder.
This worked for me and I wish you the best!

  • Apple Application Support - What and why does this exists?

So I welcomed iTunes 9 on my computer and iOS4 on my music player (latter to a great commonly known regret). Now here is my question:
What is the "Apple Application Support" and why iTunes 9 must have it to run?
(Note: Normally many software products there have optional modules which one may wish or may not wish to install depending on required functionality.)
P.S. I did my Google "homework", so please kindly advise here substantively.

See the second half of the following user tip for some information about what Apple Application Support is:
[iTunes for Windows, QuickTime, and Apple Application Support|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2355263]
The MobileMe Control Panel for Windows also uses Apple Application Support nowadays, as per:

  • Artwork not modifiable

OK so I'm struggling with yet another artwork issue and would be grateful if anyone could assist
    I'm running iTunes 10.1 (54) Mac OS 10.6.5
I've recently bought some music in FLAC format and have used FLUKE to get it imported into iTunes, now the music plays correctly and I have even been able to get it onto my iPod by converting into WAV format in iTunes.
However the artwork displays as being not modifiable, and when I select get info the artwork tab is greyed out, the user has read write access to the media and folders.
Some research suggests that this is due to the format and that apple embed the artwork into mp3's. However one of the albums I purchased that had exactly the same error was available in the iTunes store and so I selected get artwork on that album that had been purchased in FLAC format from the same online retailer and the artwork was then available and was also available when I converted it to WAV format. Further to this when I now select get info the artwork tab is available as though unlocked and I can if I wish actually change the artwork.
Any ideas how to possibly enable the artwork tab on the FLAC / WAV files that I have in my iTunes library?

    dereds wrote:
...like if the file isn't modifiable apple must have another way to associate the album with the artwork if they can't embed it right?
Yes exactly. Apple can store art in the library and associate it with the track. However, unless the art is embedded in the file, it will not be there when you use the track in another program.
Yeah I wish they'd introduce support for FLAC or at least let me buy stuff in LossLess
The online music stores that sell lossless mostly use FLAC or WAV. Apple hasn't said anything about selling lossless in the iTunes Store, and there is no reason to expect that they will.

  • Artwork Not Modifiable / Artwork options grayed out

    Hey There ~
I have searched forums and tried a bunch of different suggestions and I still can't manually add artwork to my iTunes Library.
Artwork in question is saved to my desktop as a JPG.
I have read/write permissions on all things related to iTunes.
The square on the bottom left indicates that the ARTWORK IS NOT MODIFIABLE.
I select the entire album, get info, click on artwork box, opens window, choose the file from my desktop and it places it in the square.
    It does not save.
If I get info for a single track, the ARTWORK tab is grayed out and unavailable.
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks in advance

    try this:
in finder, right-click on your iTunes music folder and +get info+. unlock the little padlock (you may have to enter your admin password). next, click on the little gear-shaped icon and +*apply to enclosed items*+ like so
you may also give everyone read & write access. if this doesn't help, try the same on your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder).
